Sad Excuse for an App. Developed by Perverts.

GreenMountainGrills is about 20% complete, but somehow was released anyhow. You have about as good of a chance to get a temp notification as you do to have Willie Nelson play your birthday under a double rainbow. They simply don’t appear. It’s not an iOS issue nor a user configuration error it’s simply laziness on the part of the developer. It’s not the user’s responsibility to play with silly settings or reinstall GreenMountainGrills each time you use it. Would you accept it if the Gmail app needed to be reinstalled each time you receive an email?

GreenMountainGrills inexplicably has a pervy location permission. In a response to another review, the developer claims that the grill cannot be started via server mode because of an “insurance company” and safety reasons. Mmmhmm. Of course, the real reason is probably due to lack of skill on the dev team. Regardless, with location enabled they know without question where GreenMountainGrills is being used. They, of course, don’t have GPS in the grill so the grill could be halfway around the world. Knowing location isn’t used for safety reasons, the only other possibilities are that pervert developers want to use location to track potential, probably female, victims or to sell your location to sleazy third parties. Both are completely unacceptable.

New Grills, Dated App

If that feels like it came from an old version of iOS. It lacks a lot of features you would expect in a modern day app. You should be able to search the recipes instead of having to visit each page. You should be allowed to swipe to go back. There should be a history of the meat temperatures when cooking. GreenMountainGrills refreshes every time you open it which creates lag and it fails to deliver reliable information if GreenMountainGrills is not open. You should be able to add multiple timers and stopwatches and give them names for different meats or other items that you’re grilling. You should be able to put the grill into Wi-Fi mode when it is on. The timer in a profile should be adjustable in case you forget to start it and want to run the profile for the remaining grill time. There are probably some other features that GreenMountainGrills needs but that would be a good start.

Great grill Bad app

Love my grill but I’m not sure how anyone could give GreenMountainGrills more than a one star rating. You don’t get notifications unless GreenMountainGrills is open and active on your screen... what’s the point then!?!? If you can’t just set a reminder to when you food gets to a certain temperature and walk away what’s the point? If you can’t set a reminder that your grill it’s a certain temperature then what’s the point? GreenMountainGrills is useless. I’ve tried to call Green mountain to see if I’m doing something wrong and never herd back from anyone, both called and wrote in. Also had some issues setting my grill up that I called and wrote in on the same thing for just asking for help, didn’t hear anything back. After checking with a couple friends that have the same grill it seems as though I’m not making a mistake because they have the same issue with GreenMountainGrills ; I was however able to get my grill set up, fixed and working no thanks to green mountain.

After being disappointed with GreenMountainGrills and never hearing anything from green mountain to help I’ll probably just get a Traeger next time around.

All in all. POOR customer service and POOR app.

Ridiculous requirement that WiFi can’t have special characters

Just bought this grill, one of the biggest selling points was the ability to connect via WiFi...and paid a premium for it no less. Turns out the developers who made GreenMountainGrills can’t figure out how to allow GreenMountainGrills to properly communicate to a WiFi network if either the SSID has spaces or special characters, or if password uses any special characters. This means you have you have a WiFi setup with a password that only contains numbers & letters.

I spoke with the company App Support and they confirmed this is not possible yet every other app on the AppStore that requires you connect to smart device via adhoc network then join your home WiFi network has this capability. Nest, every doorbell camera app, etc., these all do the same thing to connect yet work perfectly fine with an actual secure password.

The recipe section is completely broken, GreenMountainGrills will not allow you to scroll so you literally cannot see anything past the initial screen making that section completely useless. The other reviews have noted you cannot background GreenMountainGrills if connected to WiFi because Apple will not allow this, wait what?

Could be a lot better

So this review is partly affected by issues I had with my grill, but read through it.
My grill was NOT good to start with, GMG had to send 3 new controll panels, 3 new power supplies, an igniter and a temperature sensor before I could use it, I am still waiting for a replacement tray because the original one is warped thanks to it getting so hot due to the issues with the igniter and temperature sensor.
However, now my grill works, even with a warped tray I am not happy with GreenMountainGrills , I am unable to get the grill to connect to my home WiFi , it says it is joining but never does so I have to disconnect from my home WiFi and join the grills network to do anything. It frequently tells me the grill is not detected even though it is still displaying the temperature of the grill and was happily connected seconds earlier.
I also hate the fact alerts and timers are only available if GreenMountainGrills is open and active AND the phone is not locked.
This needs a lot of work to be classed as a useable app.
GMG was sold to me as the best, in my opinion it is just average from my experiences to date both with the actual grill and GreenMountainGrills .

Super convenient, when it works…

If GreenMountainGrills decides to work properly, it’s a really nice feature; I would almost say it’s necessary in order to get the most out of your grill. Having said that, GreenMountainGrills is pretty much garbage; it crashes constantly (iPhone 12 pro with up-to-date app), it boots the grill off the server after just a day or so in my experience, which is a huge hassle to fix. In order to fix it you have to physically be in front the grill in order to reconnect via point-to-point, wait, connect to WiFi mode, wait, connect to server mode, wait some more. This defeats one of the main purposes for which I bought the grill: being able to start it while away from home, so it’s ready by the time I get there.
Green Mountain is a good company as far as their customer service, so I don’t doubt that they will get these issues fixed, but needless to say, in the meantime it’s a hassle.

Upgraded the Grill to WiFi

My controller card on my Davy Crockett went bad, the replacement has the WiFi. I did not buy mine with it 3 years ago as the WiFi was just coming out and I thought I'd never use it. P-to-p worked right off but had issues with the home network. I work from home and my network is extremely locked down. I log a lot of attacks at the modem level and the firewall/router level. My problem was I forgot I used upper and lowercase character in my wireless network names. The GMG app needed it to match exactly and I wasn't putting it in correctly. Have not gotten the server mode to work yet, I need to punch a hole in the firewall to let it go out. Not sure what port they use but will do it if I really need it. Works great camping, beach, parks on the p-to-p.

Great Concept poorly programmed/executed

I want to start off and say I LOVE my GMG Daniel Boone Prime Plus. I’d give the grill a 5/5 star rating. But this is simply a current review of GreenMountainGrills /WiFi in its current state not the grill itself.

Aesthetically GreenMountainGrills design is nice and that’s about the only positive thing. I’ve directly emailed GMG my concerns as the beautiful thing is all these can be fixed and it’s not a hardware problem rather software. Which leaves me hope for future app/firmware updates.

There’s plenty of bugs but by far the biggest is the inability to consistently connect to the WiFi which makes the WiFi unusable. Which if you can’t connect to the WiFi then no connecting on remote server either. I’ve yet to have app stay connected for the entire grill session. (About 20 now). As of now I hate using GreenMountainGrills and use the grill the traditional manual way. Which is sad but I will hold out hope for future updates!

Does what is needed.

GreenMountainGrills works pretty well, especially with being able to monitor the food temps and run cooking profiles based on time or temp. The 2 things I’d like to see updated:
1. When the food temperature probe reaches the set point please PLEASE!!! give it some sort of 30sec delay when you hit dismiss before popping up the alert that it reached temp. I can’t disable the thing because it keeps popping up!!!
2. I would appreciate an alarm to show up when pellets are getting low on GreenMountainGrills , and and alarm for if the grill is no longer connected to the WiFi /app if you were in the middle of a smoke. It’d indicate the unit turned off/lost power from its poorly designed 12v connectors.

Works well unless you want something out of the ordinary

I like GreenMountainGrills design and functions. My complaint is, if I forget that I can’t change the temp in the middle of running a profile, it clears out the profile that I was running. And after that happens, I can’t continue the profile where I left off, so I have to edit the profile to fit my immediate needs, then remember to change it back after I’m done. I suggest a change where I can touch a step, and the screen expands to show the full “notes” and I am also given the option to “begin profile from this step” or something like that. Or maybe a “temporary profile edit” that doesn’t save in the profile itself.

App Never works

I just bought a grill and not only have I only been able to connect to our grill a few times, but if my phone goes black in the middle of a cook our grill is no longer detected. Another horrible thing is when the food reaches temp, you open GreenMountainGrills and it will give you a push notification non stop preventing you from changing temp on the grill from GreenMountainGrills and manually. I had to remove the target temp in between the non stop push notifications while keeping the temp probe in my hand so it wasn’t giving a “food not detected” error on the grill. I honestly want to return my grill knowing it doesn’t have the features promised. I could buy a pit boss without the WiFi and save $400. I also have only ever added the grill to our 2.5ghz channel but the few times I was connected it was on the 5ghz. THIS IS HORRIBLE.

Quickly becoming obsolete

I’ve had my GMG Jim Bowie for about 5 years. For the most part it’s been solid and reliable and has made some great good. Unfortunately, the competition is leaving GMG in the dust, especially in terms of app features. To say the current app is basic would be an understatement. Many of the other grills’ apps allow you to track the progress of a cook beyond just seeing the current temp. I’d like to see a graph of my meat’s temperature over time so I can see how fast it’s reaching temp, how long it’s stuck in a stall, etc. This would be such a simple addition to GreenMountainGrills , and one I’ve recommended to GMG. Their answer was “we’ll think about it”. For almost 5 years, GreenMountainGrills has been completely unchanged. It’s 2022. Get with the program GMG.

FAKE REVIEWS 2 ! App is pathetic and the grill is even worse!

As another reviewer has pointed out most of the recent reviews are obviously fake! How pathetic of Green Mountain to do this and their overall score is still only 3 stars!

As far as GreenMountainGrills it is mostly worthless and only works for turning the grill on and adjusting the temp and then The Wi-Fi is intermittent and server mode rarely ever works at all.

The grill itself is the biggest piece of junk I have ever bought. It takes forever to heat up and when it does the temp is never correct and sometimes off by more than 75 degrees, the power cord has failed, the temperature probes stopped working and the grill will sometimes restart when in the middle of cooking and this is only a few of the issues . I’ve spent more time on the phone with customer service than I have using the grill and amazingly all they ever did is try to convince me is that I’m doing something wrong and there’s nothing wrong with the grill. They’ve gotten so tired of talking to me that they no longer answer when I call nor will they return my call when I leave a message!

Stay away from Green Mountain and buy a Traeger! You’ll be glad that you did.

Decent App

The alert settings need some work on GreenMountainGrills—-we need push alerts and stuff like that. I’m not sure why GMG can’t develop that in there app to where I will be notified when something hits a temp or time and not have to have GreenMountainGrills running.

Also, there is a problem with the recipes within GreenMountainGrills . When I select a recipe I lose the ability to scroll down to the actual recipe—-it’s almost like the recipe doesn’t load.

Traeger does have a hand up on their app, but this grill is much better.

Privacy and functionality horrid

Don't get me wrong, the green mountain grill I have is the Daniel Boone model and it's amazing. It does tons of things that a great pellet smoker should and I am very happy with the bang for the buck. HOWEVER, and it's a big however, The way that the grill communicates with GreenMountainGrills and the home Wi-Fi and vice versa is ridiculous. If you don't have a background in IT then you're going to have quite the ride and figuring out how to control it remotely. The other thing I have a huge issue with is the need for GreenMountainGrills to know exactly where you are when you use it. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever other than to obtain your information and sell it but GreenMountainGrills needs to know exactly where you are when you cook. That is reprehensible and completely unnecessary.

Was working great, but now it’s broke!

GreenMountainGrills was fantastic until I think my phone did the auto update and it immediately shuts down every time I open it. I tried reaching out to customer service but It doesn’t seem to let me do it without GreenMountainGrills . Please get this fixed and I will address this review because I really do like the grill and GreenMountainGrills was working awesome. ***Update***. OK, I was able to send App support an email and they got me started in the right direction. Now it works perfectly and is a great app for a great grill. Thanks

Needs some work

GreenMountainGrills is great in theory but needs some work. Getting connected and switching between wifi and server mode can be complicated at times. Grill can’t be on for this but has to be on for that feature to work. Alarms keep repeating constantly. Alerts do not come through the phone unless on server mode. It could use a revamp and be a bit more user friendly. Especially with adjusting settings and pizza mode. It has its cons for sure. But it sure is nice when it’s working and you can read your food probe sensors and can adjust the temp without ever being near the grill. It’s better than not having GreenMountainGrills but by golly I hope they give it some thought on the next update.

FAKE REVIEWS! Love my GMG Grill, HATE this app

Go look at the most recent reviews and the reviewers names. So obviously FAKE. And still it has only 3 stars. Shame on GMG for pulling this instead of actually fixing GreenMountainGrills or better yet, rewriting it.

Most other legit reviewers have covered it. It’s one step above unusable. I am able to power the grill on and off, as well as set temps, fairly reliably. So it gets 1 star. Beyond that, it just is a frustrating mess of failures. I think the GMG grills are a great value, but part of me wishes I went with something with a better app like a Yoder, simply because GreenMountainGrills is so central to the way I use the grill (or wish I could use the grill). I really hope they refactor or rewrite GreenMountainGrills with a new set of developers. I’m guessing this was outsourced, and it shows…

What I’d like to see

I’ve had such a pleasurable experience with my Daniel Boone after the smoke box got replaced, which I must commend customer service for helping troubleshoot and that was a year ago. So we have purchased a 2nd Daniel Boone to house the pizza oven and they have both work perfectly. My only thing I’d like to see is the ability to edit the names of the grills. I’m not sure if GreenMountainGrills crew realizes that when smoking for long periods of time there might be alcohol involved and later in the day it be safer to know for sure which grill your controlling. Just saying.

Need location data to use smoker?

This grill was awesome until the update is forcing me to give up location data to use GreenMountainGrills ! Why does Green Mountain need to know my location to burn pellets? IOT FAIL we don’t need our grills or refrigerators to spy on us.

UPDATE: I reached out to GMG about this issue and they responded that location data is required if you want to have the grill hop on your WiFi. I was skeptical and asked for the developer docs. They replied and sent them! I confirmed it is true, while unfortunate. In this case they are providing a great feature. Five stars!

Great Idea - Needs Work

I just did a session using the devs suggestion and, sadly, it was worse. I received no notifications at all. Very frustrating! It seems like this should be an easy fix. There are even free smoking apps that have timer notifications while you phone is locked.

Honestly, GreenMountainGrills needs a lot of work. I love my smoker and the quality of the food but I went with the Jim Bowie Wifi so I could go mobile while doing at a long smoke. GreenMountainGrills has poor if non-existent auditory alerts — for Target temp reached and timer. GMG need to get this fixed! My FireBoard app is a much better product at this point. I guess I should have bought a cheeped grill and continued to use FireBoard to monitor ambient and food temps.

Great grill app

I don’t normally write reviews. This is a great improvement. This has now added functions to be able to monitor two probes. ( my grill has two and I’ve been waiting for this ) thanks! GreenMountainGrills is great and it works really well. GreenMountainGrills was a huge part in me picking this grill over the Traeger. Pairing in easy and the built in recipes are awesome. As a guy who has been in many bbq competitions this is now my preferred grill and I have a few. Love GreenMountainGrills and the support ( I called for a few questions ) just good to know when buying this grill.

By

Works okay

GreenMountainGrills works but definitely has some issues. For one the notifications are useless as they don’t occur outside GreenMountainGrills like most regular notifications. Second, and it could be an issue with the grill but if you drop out of connection with it, which will just randomlyHappen, you will no be able to reconnect to it unless you restart the grill manually. Third, the apps help info and tutorials etc are different than the manual which is different than what their info online is. Just beware that GMG has some serious issues in regards to constancy of information across platforms.

Please fix temperature alerts in server mode

Overall I’ve been satisfied with GreenMountainGrills and the ability to control the grill from my phone. This is a great feature and my reason for purchasing. With that said, in server mode when the set temperature is met, you keep getting alerts after you acknowledge and dismiss the alert. It’s quite annoying to keep dismissing the alerts. Other than that, I haven’t had any trouble with the grill and connecting to it via GreenMountainGrills . After this fix, 5 stars all day long!

Grill start up

While using the Bluetooth or WiFi option I’ve always run into the issue with the grill smoking really bad then shutting off tripping the breaker. The grill was clean but for some reason it keeps over filling the kiln and bogging down the auger. I finally said forget it and disconnected it from WiFi and Bluetooth and have been running it manually. It’s been working ever since. The other issue is you have to turn it up quite a bit to get it to sear steaks and such. I’m on the fences with this grill I’ve never had these issues with my older TRAEGER grill really disappointed at this point with the technology and tech support!

By

Needs improvement

Love the functionality of the grill but GreenMountainGrills needs adjusting. I had a low pellet alarm but my phone never alerted me to the alarm. Also when it reaches the temp of either the grill or meat it pops up a notification on my phone but doesn’t make noise or anything to get my attention. The pop up flashes and then goes blank, you need to be staring at the phone to see the notifications. Also, I set a timer and had the same results. I have an iPhone 8. Maybe it works with other phone better?

By

Must have

My friend just bought one of these grills and we could not wait to check it out. Set up was pretty simple and customer service was quick to pick up the phone when ever we had a question. I was amazed at how quickly I was able to produce good smoked meats with little effort on my end. I would definitely think about going this route next time you buy a smoker.

Awesome app support

I was unable to connect to my Davy Crockett grill with multiple resets and app reinstalls. Sent a email to GreenMountainGrills support team and got a response within minutes, on a Sunday. What a surprise, didn’t expect a response until Monday. Turn out I needed to update my iOS. After that, I was able to connect to the grill without issues. App works awesome and 5 stars to the GMG app support. You got a customer for life.
