Missing too much

PanoptoLegacy is pathetic compared to other media players. Audible is so user friendly and functionally useful, and PanoptoLegacy is embarrassingly below standard. The purpose of it is to play academic material. For someone to learn, they will often need to rewind the playback. There is no functional was to do this. There is a horrible rewind button that goes backwards at an unspecified speed, which is too slow to actually be useful. Then, it changes to a very rapid rewind after being held down for a longer, but also unspecified period. So you will either be unable to get back to the place you need to re-listen, or it will start hyper speed and bring you far before where you wanting, which wastes so so much time when done multiple times in an hour. God help you if you accidentally just push that same rewind button and don't hold it down! If you accidentally click the button, it takes you back to the beginning and you're screwed. You can't just grab the time bar and slide your place to where you need to be. There may be 2 hours of material on a 2 inch line, you can't even get within 10 minutes of where you need to be.
There needs to be a "5 second" or "10 second" rewind button.
There are many other issues with PanoptoLegacy, but this one absolutely needs to be addressed if they want anyone to be able to learn while using it.

Panopto @ MTSU

We have been using Panopto for the last 5 years. This is the best product for higher education video management. We are very pleased for its easy to use and flexibility. We use Panopto in several different use cases. One of the best features is the ability to record multiple sources, including multiple video cameras, screens, capture the PowerPoint presentation to generate title content sections, search inside video speech, screen captures, power point capture and captions! Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Finally, Panopto has the best customer support I have dealt with in 30 years! Great product.

Panopto, you’re killing me!!

I have been introduced to panopto through school and I have to say, it was going well until the most recent update. This is how we lecture capture and it WAS integrated to canvas, but now, it won’t open through the canvas app. This feature was especially useful because i could access a specific class through canvas, click on the panopto link and only those lectures for the class would be listed. It was GREAT! But now...I can’t categorize my lectures and most of all, if i pause the video, get up and go to the bathroom and come back, the screen is grey, it says there’s an error and I have to force close PanoptoLegacy and reopen it. Every. Freaking. Time. Thank god there’s a tab for recently viewed. It’s the most frustrating part of my day and I really need you to fix it. This is just unacceptable.

Not a great app!

I am a working engineering professional who is also going to school via an online program at a prominent university. This is not a great app because:
1. PanoptoLegacy does not support split view while taking notes. It would be nice to have the player on one side and the note taking app on the other side of the split view.
2. Our school uses this company's embedded player to provide videos on the course websites. It does not matter if you use Safari or Chrome. If you play the video full screen in the browser and multitask between apps and return to the full screen video, it goes completely "black.". The website has to be refreshed or reloaded and the video has to be fast forwarded to where you left it last. Other video players do not have this issue. How did this pass Quality Control during software testing?
3. I don't see the developers providing feedback to PanoptoLegacy Store reviews and hence I doubt this review will be read. I hope someone will read it and provide the required improvements.

If it was not for my school using this player, I would not use PanoptoLegacy at all.

Great option for impromptu situations

I have seen some pretty negative reviews about PanoptoLegacy, but I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. As a faculty member who uses it to (among other things) capture unforeseen events for incorporation into future presentations, I think it’s great. I always have my phone with me, and if an opportunity to capture something that’s worth sharing with my students presents itself, Panopto is always available. I complete a recording, upload it to Panopto's servers and I can add to it later using Panopto’s editing features.

Faster pace?

There should be an option to make the lectures move at a faster pace, just as there is on the actual website. I thought it had this option when I used PanoptoLegacy earlier in the year, but it’s not there anymore. Having that feature would be extremely helpful. Other than that it’s fine I guess.

Whoever ran QC on this had no idea what they were doing

This is the most unreliable app I have ever used for any purpose on any platform. Like why does it even exist? It’s worse than a Beta test: buttons that should work don’t, it does stuff you never asked it to do, it says it’s dowloaded stuff it hasn’t, and when you search, there’s no option to search by course - only by individual videos. I had downloaded PanoptoLegacy to watch videos on a plane so I could study while out of service in the air, but sadly, it’s only downloaded two of 5 videos it says it has, and honestly, if it works tomorrow anything like it has tonight, I don’t know if those videos will even be there when I need them.

Not able to change screen view

It is very annoying that you can only see the lecturer talking, and not the PowerPoint slide they are on when watching live on the mobile app. You should be able to switch between those screens or have a view with both screens. It should match what the desktop version of Panopto provides but it does not. It makes keeping track of lectures impossible on my phone. This has clearly been a problem for a long time and with so many schools using Panopto during the COVID outbreak it’s upsetting that this change hasn’t been implemented to the mobile app.

Near worthless

I’ve tried several times over the past six months to download PanoptoLegacy and use it for my college courses. Every single time, something doesn’t work and PanoptoLegacy either won’t let me sign in, won’t let me copy and paste a site to view my Panopto‘s, or it will copy and paste but then shows nothing in my library. All three times I’ve downloaded it it has done absolutely nothing and been worthless. Very frustrating, amazing that this company is even around. Only a matter of time until someone with half a brain outsmarts this dumb company and puts them out of business.

The editing function is horrible

I’ve been using Panopto since the pandemic hit. The editing function isn’t user friendly at all. In fact it takes me days on end to edit, more time than I used in recording the video. Adding a clip to a video is especially annoying. It’ll either overlap and skip minutes ahead from the original video or there’s going to be a random dark screen in the middle where you merged the two videos. PanoptoLegacy needs serious improvement.

Sound is terrible!

I read reviews that were well over a year old and was hoping surely they’ve fixed those issues by now... Nope! Still no playback speed options on the mobile app. But my real issue is that it sounds like a robot when I play it on my phone. I tried two different phones to see if it was a problem with my current phone. I tried using my web browser verses PanoptoLegacy and both places it sounds like a robot. It’s so distracting that I can’t use it. This is a frustrate piece of technology.

Let down in our time of need

It should be pretty obvious that if you are using PanoptoLegacy, you are most likely a student or an educator. Now more than ever, an app like this is needed by students and educators everywhere given that most institutions have transitioned to fully online classes. PanoptoLegacy should have been ideal for this situation, but it is so poorly optimized, that it is barely usable on any newer devices. I’ve experienced multiple crashes while watching instructors’ videos and the UI itself is very buggy and unresponsive.

Very low featured compared to iPad version.

I use PanoptoLegacy on my iPad and figured I could also use it on my iPhone when I’m out somewhere and want to get some quick studying in. It’s fine in an absolute pinch, but it’s definitely missing some important features. There’s no 10 second rewind button and no speed increase button for when trying to get through a lesson more quickly. Very important features for me which definitely make the iPad version the far superior version.

Great improvements

The Panopto Mobile app has come along way in improving the user experience. Sign in has been improved and the navigation is intuitive. This also allows you to upload any videos you’ve made on your phone to Panopto.

Lot of critical functions missing

Please update this player to work like the desktop one on iphone
I have to listen to lectures while commuting and the fact that there is no 10 seconds rewind or ff button makes it so hard to use as i need to do that A LOT OF TIMES
Please also add a function for playback speeds sometimes it is inevitable to listen faster or slower
One last function would be amazing if you add it which is the ability to favorite folders or lecture that would be so helpful

Clunky and inconvenient

I have to uninstall and reinstall PanoptoLegacy regularly because it simply won’t let me log into my school’s Canvas site. There is only a 10s rewind option which is the worst with an hour long or two hour lecture and you’re trying to find something or need to repeat. Moving the bar with your finger is useless, you’ll jump 2-3 minutes. Speed settings are also frustrating, only .5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x which is challenging depending on the professor’s speech patterns. Could be so much better.

They’ve fixed things

I read another review that said it lacked a ten second rewind/forward button but I just downloaded PanoptoLegacy for school and it does have them now. It was super easy to rewind and fast forward. I’m loving PanoptoLegacy.

Missing too many features

My college just witched from tegrity to Panopto and honestly I’m pretty disappointed in PanoptoLegacy . The tegrity app had it’s glitches but at least I was able to listen through my headphones and watch lectures at variable speeds. PanoptoLegacy has a lot to do to become competitive in the market, any updates to the website need to be integrated into PanoptoLegacy in order to advertise them to schools and business, otherwise it is a false promise.

By

Limited speed options and simultaneous app usage

When you use the Panopto app you are limited to X1.5 and x2 depending in the lecturer 1.25 or 1.75 might be the right speed but this is not an option here. Also it doesnt allow you to use simultaneosly a second app while panoptoing (split screen).

If they fix this and also add a 10sec fwd I would use it more often.

Terrible for Students

I currently use Panopto as a student in medical school. There should be ways to integrate picture-in-picture functions on the mobile app as well as allow it to “split screen” on iPad. PanoptoLegacy reminds me of when apps were first introduced a decade ago. For this to be the only application that allows videos from Panopto to be viewed, it needs to be a whole lot better. This will help students and all users alike.

It’s alright

I have to use this for school lectures but it would be nice to be able to fast forward, rewind, and pause using a keyboard for the iPad. Like a few people said before, if its a 2 hour lecture, moving it just a little bit will put you back 10 minutes instead of the 30 seconds you wanted. I see now there is a 10 second rewind but its somewhat annoying having to tap my screen every few minutes to write notes and go back/ not able to fast forward. Even the simple feature of pausing with my space bar would be a slight improvement (since I’m basically not able to use my keyboard while using PanoptoLegacy)
