iDevices iGrill obsolete

2022-05-24

I own an original iDevices iGrill thermometer. While I do not use it frequently, when I need it, it is a very handy device. Unfortunately, I have recently been forced to upgrade from the iDevices app to the this app iGrill app and now my iGrill thermometer will no longer pair with my phone. I called customer service. While very friendly, their answer to my issue was that my device is obsolete and not supported by the this app app and I need to buy a new this app iGrill thermometer. This doesn’t feel like a reasonable answer when my device functioned just fine except that this app decided to no longer support legacy iDevices devices from the product they purchased the rights to. Feels like they are trying to force users to scrap their old functioning devices in order to drive sales of this app branded products.

Great concept but poor execution

2022-06-25

I loved this so much after my first use on a new grill that I bought a second one to go on another grill. Too bad I didn’t wait to really see how it worked (and doesn’t). The biggest problem, because it can’t be fixed in software is that it connects via Bluetooth. So your phone has to remain within that limited range. If you wander away, it disconnects and usually for me that requires power cycling the unit to get it to reconnect. Second problem is that it crashes frequently. Tonight, 4-5 times during my 1 hour grilling. That meant multiple times an alarm didn’t sound when the grill got too hot or too cold. And even when it hadn’t crashed, the alarm on my phone sometimes didn’t go off, though it was beeping outside on the sending unit. That’s a big FAIL. Also, the graph of temp, which tell you much more than the single point in time temperature, seems to lag a minute or two behind. It’s been months since an update so it seems like this app isn’t really committed to this. Count this as a cheap (in quality, not price) toy that will hinder your grilling.

Absolutely stupid broken notifications

2022-07-26

I would love to say this device and app is great, and it could be, if it weren’t for what happens if you get multiple problems at or near the target temperature at the same time. Normally, if a probe is at or near temperature, it will pop up a notification from the bottom of the screen, with a dismiss button on it. Unfortunately, if a second probe is at or near temperature at the same time, it will pop up in front of the original notification, but only pop halfway up, seemingly so you can see the notification behind it. In doing so, the dismiss button for the first notification is covered by the second notification, and the dismiss button for the second notification is off screen. You can now no longer dismiss either notification, or navigate anywhere else in Weber . If you close and re-open Weber , the notifications immediately pop up, causing the same failure immediately again.

Own two minis, for years. Can not recommend to anyone

2022-08-27

After suffering relearning after multiple software updates, my iGrill minis stopped providing alerts when target temp was reached. We’ve experienced overcooked meat multiple times. It became necessary to diligently watch Weber to see when target was reached. I can do that with a manual thermometer. Delete, reinstall app and alert came back. For fun, it still intermittently forgets to send alerts. Then the battery kept going dead. They will not shut off, you must remove the battery. The latest version required deletion of the old app to get. It now requires a temperature range be set, with an annoying alarm to alert you it’s too cold before reaching the lower of the set range. How is that helpful? Now the phone battery management shows IGrill running in background for 21 hours, sucking the phone battery dry. I’m contacting support (again). How can I possibly recommend this to anyone?

I still hate this app

2022-09-28

I still hate Weber after the upgrade.
I don’t have any connection problems or alert problems like some other reviewers but the basic usability and display is awful. Specifically when you select what you are cooking; steak for instance, it presents a list of probably 100 different types of steak which you then have to scroll through. Seriously??? I just want to grill a basic slab of meat to medium rare I don't give a crap if it’s top sirloin or ribeye. The temps are exactly the same. Then when looking at the graph, it is squeezed into the top quarter of the screen- I can tell one of their products has 4 temp sensors so it makes sense to show all 4 but I have the igrill mini with exactly one sensor. I used to see a full screen graph where it was very clear.

I know these apps are expensive to build; so it is baffling to me why they would rebuild what was previously a great design and replace it with this very pretty but useless crap.

Disconnecting disappointment

2022-10-29

I purchased a new this app Grill and the Igrill 3 came with the grill. I thought it would be great to have all the probes. The first hour was great and everything worked well. After that it started disconnecting about every 5 to 10 minutes. I tried to submit a ticket and it did not work. I took out my old temp probe and it worked fine. I again tried to use the igrill 3 and for about the first hour it worked then it started disconnecting every 5 to 10 minutes. I have done every trouble shooting suggested even reloading Weber . It is not good and I would not buy one again. You should not get frustrated by a temp probe when cooking but that is all this thing has to offer. Support is not very good.

Ruined by Developers...

2022-11-30

I wish there was a zero stars option. I have been using this product for years. Ever since this app bought the product line and started updating Weber , things have gotten progressively worse. This is coming from a HUGE this app fan. I have 3 this app grills which I dearly love, but these jokers should stay out of Weber developing business. All of the complaints in the review section are absolutely valid. No more custom presets, clunky gimmicky UI, non-intuitive navigation...it's all there - every disappointing bit of it. This is an easy fix, we will see if they are too proud to admit they screwed the pooch and just release the old version. Until then, I'm shelving this now useless tool in favor of my old wired probe thermometer.

Update: I still hate Weber. It’s the worst thing this app has ever produced. If you guys would simplify Weber instead of making it “cutesy” you would win back your actual customer base. I guarantee that NONE of your developers use this. That’s because they are too busy staring at screens thinking up useless features. THEY DON’T COOK! The people who use this are actual cooks! I fear this review will fall on deaf ears and will garner another “thanks for feedback and being a this app fan” reply. When you are ready for some suggestions let me know. I stopped using this stupid thing loooong ago.

Turn it off

2022-12-31

I am happy the way it works, I am not happy about the way it doesn’t work. (I depleted two batteries in the sending unit before I figured out how to turn it off when finished. (Hold down the button until the white light comes on)
I also wondered why my cell phone battery was running down so quickly. I entered my settings app into “battery “ and found the iGrill was running in background accounting for 27% of the phone’s activity. Finally in Weber under “temperature” I was able to disconnect devices.
Further, I like to roast a pork tenderloin on the upper rack. My wife insists it must be well done. However, the setting for pork tenderloin in Weber only allows up to medium well. It’s no problem letting it run over but the intermittent alarm is annoying. I wish there was an override or a setting adjustment. I am sure there are similar situations for other cuts of meat. Just saying.

App needs some features

2023-02-01

So overall as a instant temp for right now, Weber works. However given you have historic data you’re collecting, a simple little math can come up with an estimated time for completion to cook something.

To me this is a very easy feature but one that is sorely missing. I use this to monitor temps while I smoke my meat and by adding a feature that looks at the trend of temps and the last few polls, it can easily put in a “estimated grill done temp” which would be awesome. All it would need to do is display it somewhere with the done temp and could even be a view within the graph to swipe to the right side so you can see the path of the temp change as you adjust the temp of your grill or smoker as it will modify the end cook time as well.

This one feature alone makes my old $15 thermometer far better as it could do that.

iPhone X issues - won’t pair

2023-03-05

I decide to give this review three out of five stars mainly because the installation was pretty easy and frustration free. However, when I went to go pair with my iPhone X it wouldn’t pair no matter what I did (shut off Bluetooth, turned back on, shut off the phone, restarted the igrill, etc). Just for giggles I decided to try it on my girlfriends iPhone 6s And it worked marvelously.
With my pairing, via the igrill app, it would find the igrill, start to pair with it, the light would turn blue, and then after about 5 to 10 seconds the screen would go back to “pair device“. Unlike with the iPhone 6s, I never received the “would you like to pair with this device“ iOS alert popover. :-/

Changed my tune

2023-04-03

After my previous scathing review and frustration with Weber since the this app takeover, and the rendering of my original iGrill device obsolete with a recent app update, I must say that this app’s response and support has been outstanding. They took my harsh comments in stride and handled the issue promptly, sending me a new device that is compatible with their updated app. All of their responses were prompt and courteous. The new device and app have worked fine on the first two uses, however, I must say that Weber could still use some tweaking. The original iGrill app gave you a choice of alarms, which was handy as you could pick one that might be easier to hear in a noisy environment. I find the current chirping alarm with no other options to be a little annoying. It would also be nice to be able to adjust the target temp on the fly instead of having to start over, if you decide that you or a guest would like their food a little more done. Fortunately, the graph doesn’t start over in the case that you have to do that. I could live with those annoyances, however, if it means that I don’t run into surprises every time I use Weber and see that the latest update forces me to have to do or relearn something just to throw some meat on the grill. Again, thanks to this app for their outstanding support.

Overall great, but needs a timer/alarm

2023-05-05

Weber and the device work well and I've had few issues with it if at all. I've figured out after some trial and error the way to get the best results with our beef filets. Firstly, it seems the doneness settings are a bit over zealous for this cut of meat. I have to consistently choose a doneness one step below desired. That works pretty well.

The one thing I wish it had was the ability to set alarms based on specific temperatures. For instance, at about halfway through, I want to turn the steak, but all I can do is just monitor the temp on my own. I'd like to have the ability to set a custom alarm to tell me when in case I get distracted with other parts of my cook.

Great Program, However?

2023-06-05

I use this with the iGrill 2 with 4 probes; one for ambient temperature and 3 for food temperatures. I had no problem assigning a color to each probe. I want to give each probe a name, but I haven’t been successful. I following the instructions in the manual (Tap the probe# on the left and change the name), but no success. I’ve deleted Weber and reinstalled and reset the iPhone. I have also tried it on my iPad. I know this is trivial, but I would like to use all features in Weber . I was able to change the name of the iGrill2, but no luck with the probes.

Thank you.

I wished I could give the last update a Zero.

2023-07-07

3rd update, I’m increasing my rating to 5 stars. I just finished an eighteen hour smoke, Weber didn’t lose connection and the alarm is much better.

The only thing I would like to see is the whole graph for longer smokes on one page.

2nd update

I am increasing my review to 4 stars Weber is now useable. Thanks.

update.
This is an update I have changed my review from one to three stars.
They have brought back range cooking and better alerts, thank you. I would still like to see more aggressive alerts for overnight barbecuing.

——————
The last update has turned both of my igrills into expensive refrigerator magnets. The min/max settings that were helpful for overnight smoking are gone. The audible "Your food is ready." is gone.

Great App... Feature Request!!

2023-08-07

First, let me say that this is a great app. I have 2 temp sensors and plan to get a 3rd. From what I can tell, the probes are very accurate, within 1 degree of others I’ve tested with. The range is decent, but I prefer to use a spare phone and leave it near my grill. This is a must have for anyone grilling. Makes it easy to be perfect every time.

My feature request is to provide an app or features for using iGrill for home brewing. I’ve been using it to monitor my saccharification, mash out, boil, hop stand/whirlpool, and chilling. I love how the grilling app records and graphs temps based on food and temp. For brewing, it would be awesome if Weber would track 5-6 custom temperature milestones over several hours.

Your iGrill device is already great for brewing, but an app to support brewers would allow you to sell a whole lot more of these devices.

Thanks! Hope this reaches someone in product marketing.

Rough start

2023-09-08

I guess I just have to say make sure you down load the right this app app for your Bluetooth and make sure you replace the battery’s. After that this thing is an absolute champ I choose the cut of meat or set the temp and walk away. Most Bluetooth enabled devices can make your life challenging but this one is super easy once set up. this app I recommend putting QRC codes linked to set up and trouble shooting video super inexpensive and can get the user rolling faster.

Much Improved!

2023-10-10

Since I gave the following 1 star review last summer, both app updates and an upgrade from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 8 Plus have resulted is everything working extremely well.

I am very satisfied by the changes made and that my older iGrill thermometer now is working good as new and arguably easier to use.

Thanks for listening and responding in a very effective way.

“8/17. Can I give less than one star?

To do an app update that renders identification of your device, in spite of being connected by Bluetooth, when it was perfectly functional before the update is pretty bad.

Any app update should remain compatible with all the iGrill devices.

Yup, delete this update and offer the old one again. At least then the remote function would work.

Right now we can only use the iGrill devise in a stand-alone mode. Weber will not find the device no matter how long you wait.

Very dissatisfied.”

Wow

2023-11-10

Like most of you, I have quite a few apps that work well but have never taken the time to review. But WOW! This device and app have truly impressed me! I’m using it right now smoking a brisket and monitoring the smoke box temp. I have it dialed in for a temp range and have been in the pool all day. It notifies me on my watch when temp gets out of range and I make a small adjustment and all is good. Technology is so impressive! Way to go this app! I have to say I’ve also been reading through the reviews and seen this app’s responses to comments. Great product and great customer service. That’s about all you can ask for from a company!

I grill 5 nights a week and I love this unit!

2023-12-12

I’m not sure why the this app iGrill devices get such bad reviews. I use this device at least 5 nights a week and it works perfect every time. The reviews I read made me leery about the performance of this unit but I have not found any faults. Connection is flawless with my iPhone, battery life is great, Weber interface is top notch. I am a big fan of the notifications it sends you when your food is nearing the desired temperature. I would most definitely purchase this again and I would recommend to anyone. Buy it!

Great

2024-01-12

I love this thermometer it has changed my grilling experience! It literally took all the guessing out of it. My wife and daughter bought me the igrill 2 for Father’s Day and pretty much everything I grill and definitely everything I smoke I use it. It’s awesome because I can have 4 probes going all at once if I have different meats I am grilling at one time I can monitor the temps and I can also monitor the grate temperature. All around I think it is a great product and would recommend it to anyone that grills from the seasoned veteran to the newbie that just started grilling.

Believe all the reviews.

2024-12-16

Update: I’m stuck in Hell; in this particular inferno you must continue to use an app that was once perfectly fine, but it was so good it committed the sin of pride, and so it believed it could be better, better than what it the task it was given all along.

Now every bbq, ever roast, has lost all meaning, a mere vestige of what was once pleasant and fun; I curse the programmers of Weber: May your plate always taste oversalted.

Like all the others have said, this is a terrible update and you should avoid it at all costs. They have removed human agency from Weber and have introduced a user interface that can only have been thought up by the same folk who talk of torture as enhanced interrogation. Avoid at all costs.

Don’t buy

2024-12-16

Just burnt a $50 brisket to crisp. Put on brisket for 8 hour smoke at midnight and went to sleep. Thought I would sleep well with my new I grill web app. Woke up to a nightmare. Didn’t get a notification or nothing. Went down at 5am to check it and it turned to charcoal, obviously due to some water charcoal ratio and water pan steaming off. Opened app and saw a nice silent pop up of OVER TARGET TEMP...no notifications when target temp reached...almost there, no setting options for notifications NOTHING...I would have been better off with no freaking thermometer....I got stupid and thought this was 2018 where technology worked and freaking app developers tested their iterations...piece of junk, do not buy or use app....recommend old school way

Good app, but room for improvement

2024-12-16

Love Weber , but why not let me apply the same temp settings to multiple probes at once? When cooking for my family, I’m often cooking multiple of the same meat at once and it’s always an annoyance that I have to set up all 4 probes individually even though I want to use the same settings for all of them. Why can’t I just select the meat being cooked and apply those settings to multiple probes at once?

Overall it’s a good product and app, but fixing this little annoyance will take it from good to great!

Good, but...

2024-12-16

The connectivity has improved from previous versions. I love that it stays connected.
Temps seemed to read fine & accurate. I like the color probe indicators, but feel they need better placement. Your instructions indicate that they need to be away from higher heats, but slide easily on cable. If you attach them to the probe, they can burn. If you attach them at the other end, it. Gets confusion following the lines during multiple product cooks or various temp settings (I cook BBQ low & slow and different meats at 1 time.
Due to cooking various meats at 1 time, I wish I could name the probes independently. I could not find an option to do this.
Am I missing something.
For this past Easter, I slow cooked leg of lamb (off the bone) on a smoker and Ham on my this app propane grill. BOTH came out great AND the lamb was the best my family every had.
Thanks for listening & continuing to improve.

Works great

2024-12-16

Got the iGrill mini before it was acquired by this app. I also have a Traeger pellet grill. Those two work pure magic with anything I smoke and/or grill.
Unlike many others, i have zero complaints about the probe, app or connectivity between the phone and probe... just smoked a 17lbs turkey for TG, it was amazing and the probe was spot on and guided me all along.
I like the latest update of Weber , much easier to navigate Weber and configure the probe, imho.
Great job to the team maintaining this product!
