The fact that you need to pay just to speak with someone about a a living space is just ridiculous. Trash app. Garbage

I was so delighted to find such a good app for searching for housing and/or flat mates. Initially SpareRoom was free to use but that all changed with the upgrade. Now one must pay be it 7 day, 2 weeks, a month.....just to PM anyone on the site. It’s not useful nor productive by any means. I don’t see the reason why the developers set it this way. Does anyone know why?

SpareRoom seems to have a nice functional interface, but after using it for almost a week and sending out over 44 text messages to people who are in the same price range, looks like no one even responds to you. Basically only 2 people responded out of 44 people. And those two said, they account is old and excused themselves for not taking their account down. It’s a bit expensive for the outcome. For now I do not even feel like anyone is even interested, seems like all accounts are fake!? Should SpareRoom be helpful, I’ll write a better review

I started looking for a place on SpareRoom in September 2020. It is now March 2021. I went to multiple places and most people were extremely rude and judgmental. You’re lucky if they even respond to you. One time I was all ready to rent a room out, just for the woman (who was my age) to tell me she had already rented the room out. So why did you have me come over? How is someone moving in when you told me you don’t even know the cost of security deposit? A lot of people seemed like they wanted to meet me for their own entertainment just to play with my head and then never talk to me again. I’ve been looked at like I have 3 heads and 6 arms. I did absolutely nothing wrong and was always kind to everyone. I deleted my profile picture so people won’t judge me. Don’t even know what picture to use because I became really hurt and self conscious. I knew it would be hard to find a place to live but I never knew it would be this hard. I am trying one more time to see if I can find some good people renting rooms out. I’m frustrated, but hopeful. Otherwise, SpareRoom works and is easy to navigate. I like the layout and design of SpareRoom and it’s easy to find places to rent in the area(s) you’re looking at. I met maybe 2 nice people in the fall but I was still unable to rent from them. If you use SpareRoom, be careful what personal info you give out. Be nice, and hopefully they’ll be nice back. Or they’ll just ignore you. One guy even had the nerve to make fun of me and said I looked like Bhad Bhabie and therefore I was problematic. Just because I look like someone doesn’t mean I am the same person. So now I’m starting over. Won’t be sharing pics of myself until I know the people I’m messaging are cool. I know I’m a good person and don’t deserve to be treated like this on an app such as this one. I would still give it a try though. It could have been the area, these people were in uptown NYC. Good luck to whoever reads this.

It would be great to be able to navigate to a responders profile. Most responses seem like they are spam or bots

Spare Room is a decent app. It has its perks and the idea of what it tries to do is amazing. It falls short in a few important areas, but that could easily be fixed if the developers listen. Ive been using it for 2 months but I recently upgraded because I need to find a place within the two months. I dont have a problem with paying for more premium features I guess. The majors flaws I see in SpareRoom are the following.

Unresponsive landlords. Too many people are able to leave you on read. Whether I meet your qualifications or not, it is important to communicate and let me know if I am able to move forward with you or not. Spare room needs to penalize unresponsive landlords cause at the end of the day, I am paying to not get replies back to my message, which makes it feel like a waste of money. This isnt instagram.

Incomplete listings. Why am I constantly seeing listings with minimal to 0 pictures? That should not be allowed. How are you selling a room or apt and no pictures? That screams scam and spare room needs to prevent ppl from being able to list things without pictures. Pictures should be mandatory? WTH. You’re selling a product, let me see it!

Female Only. Too many listings are asking for specifically females which I find weird and creepy. You should not be able to ask for a specific gender as a roommate. It is up to you on who you accept as a landlord but your listings should be available for ALL. It’s discrimination and you mind as well let ppl start asking for certain ethnicities and races if you want to go that route.

SpareRoom constantly won’t allow me to connect each time I attempt to sign in.
Worked once and now just won’t connect ever. Uninstall/Reinstall did not fix either. And I paid for the 1wk upgrade.
Not very useful if I can’t sign in

Working really well so far haven't had any problems! Love being able to check and see if there's any new flats available quickly and easily!! Would recommend buying if moving to UK from overseas!

A friend of mine suggested this, and I used it. Highly recommend it. Genuine house listings. I didn’t find any scam or spam. Found a good place, a very nice house mate as well.

Only improvement would be an expansion of the search features to have as many options as the website. Sometimes inconvenient to search online and save in order to view certain options on the phone.

Surprised that SpareRoom doesn't support push notifications so messages I receive from the parent site are pushed to my email.

Also app signs me out and have to reenter password

It's honestly a really well designed, thought out and useful app. The only downside are the lack of advanced search functionality. Other than that I love it!

I love SpareRoom , it's been helpful in estimating costs of flats in different areas as I prepare to move to London from the US. I'd love to see them add the advanced search functions that exist on the website (search by commute time, etc), but aside from that it is fabulous!
