4.7 out of 5
doesn’t work

when I updated trainchinese , I had to restore my account, the loading just began to stop on 60%.

Updates ruined the app for me

大家好~ I love trainchinese, and it’s modes of training are very helpful. Or, at least, they were before the most recent major update. Now, I cannot…
- read the full length of long phrases in training mode
- add more than two strokes to a drawing before it glitches
- draw characters in whichever order

Plus, the multiple choice is often of the same phrase copied twice, only one is correct.

I hope that the developers fix trainchinese soon because, generally, the flashcards, dictionary, and training modes were all very helpful and I’ll miss them. These features from a free app really made it stand out, but now…

No sound iPhone X

Listen button on iPhone X doesn't produce any sound. Working fine on my iPhone 8 Plus though. Please fix!! Will update the review again once it is fixed.

Great design, suspicious subscription

First of all, this is a great app for learning Chinese. That’s not the problem that I had with it.

The free version gives you 3 lists and 15 new words a week (Note that if you delete one, you don’t get that back). Paying for the subscription gets rid of this weekly limit, but you’ll soon notice that you’re still limited to the three lists that they give you upfront. That means that if you fill out all three lists and continue paying the subscription, you are still capped at just 300 words and are paying for essentially what you could get if you canceled your subscription. (You could get the same number of words by also just waiting 20 weeks?)

All of this is a little unconventional, but I would give them a break if it weren’t for the fact that you are also allowed to buy extra lists independently of having a subscription. This means they give you the option to spend money without getting practically anything in return (You’ll still have the weekly limit). This is when I decided that something seemed a little fishy…

It’s sad that such a great app became so offputting when it came to payment. The developers otherwise seem like honest, nice people, but I just simply can’t trust such a pricing model with my bank information. If you are ok with this model, this might be a good app for you.

helpful but technical issues

Havent used trainchinese for long but it has been helpful and I was planning to buy a subscription after trying it for a little longer but there is something really wrong with how the ‘create flash card’ keeps track of your weekly allotted free cards. Just now, I had 10 to add for this week but after I added 2, my count is down to 0. Very inconvenient and disruptive to my learning and makes me doubt how reliable trainchinese would be if I purchased a subscription.

Review

I think it should be able to show any word no matter what word you type like good words or bad words or it should have formal and informal by that word and for the pronunciation it should have a option to pronuce the word slow or fast paste as well(:

Please fix your overly complicated UI

This set of apps is great to study Chinese, but it’s a huge headache to do anything account related. The UI isn’t clear, it still offers me to buy a year subscription even though I already bought it? Which was confusing. Also it asked me for a nickname and an email on the writing app. I assumed it would put my nickname for the leaderboards but it puts my email? No one else has their email, and I don’t really want that public, so I guess I can’t do very well on that app, which is discouraging. Please fix your overly complicated and headache inducing UI. I was debating between taking off one or two stars for the admin side of trainchinese , which is a shame because the Chinese learning portion of these apps is the best I’ve found.

Love app but...

i wish it wasn’t a subscription but a one time buy like Pleco. If it was i would totally buy it but i’m not interested in paying 35 a year for who knows how long.

By far the greatest Chinese learning app in the App Store.

I’ve used multiple Chinese learning apps, and this one is by far the most helpful. I especially love the anki-style self training.

There are in-app purchases, however, I believe they are definitely worth it given the numerous resources available in this application.

To the creators, thank you for putting this wonderful resource together!

Opinion

It would be better if we can put different words and get the meaning. Instead I can only search for one word at a time

Learning languages

Most perfect language learning app for learning Chinese language I have ever seen. Very easy to use and also with writing understanding in trainchinese with every character details. Parvezny

Very helpful for learning mandarin

From 2017 onwards, when I began learning Chinese, I have discovered that these applications are among the best. Additionally, it makes understanding easier for me and has a really true connotation.

Excellent app!

Very convenient and stylish app, makes learning Chinese easy and pleasant. I am totally in love with animations, showing how to write characters properly. Flash cards help learn words without hustle, definitely recommend!

A big thank you to the authors

The new interface of trainchinese and the updates have made trainchinese quite attractive for learners. Keep doing great job 🫡

Solid Training and Reference

The series of apps and trainchinese. you can learn writing, tones, numbers, definitions,
a total depth of leaning on your phone or tablet.

This is great to use.

We have been found the new words very easy.

Praise and Feedback

Excellent design. TC has helped me reach my first goal of memorizing the stroke order for 500 basic Chinese words. The inability, however, to change the tone colors is the only drawback. I.e. Before learning with trainchinese, I had already matched the 2nd tone to yellow in my brain. Other than this issue, TC is one of the best apps available for learners of Chinese.

Best Chinese Learning apps

I have tried many apps and i think this is the best

Perfect 👍🏼

The ability to write in English or pinyin, or characters is awesome! Perfect app for Chinese

HSK prep

I first used trainchinese to study for HSK level 3. It’s the best way to learn words and characters. Now, more than halfway through studying for level 5, I spend half my time with textbooks and half my time on my IPad using this app.
