I didn’t believe that the average person fails to spend 120m outside per week and installed NatureDose to find out what my number was. After using it for three days, outside (by my definition) for substantial parts of each day, including five hours in a national park.
Result = zero hours so I’m not sure hours far off the grid you have to be to get counted as outside enough.
Beyond that I was curious and listened to the founder on a podcast I enjoy talking about how the goal was to gather enough data to get Apple to include it bundled on their app but, for now, profits come from selling data to governments and insurance companies.
Not seeing a way to opt out of such data collection, I deleted NatureDose and my account (though I wonder if info was really deleted).
An app that does what this promises would be valuable for many people but a ‘free’ service collect and bundle user data to insurance companies isn’t something is disingenuous.
This is a great idea, but is not very accurate. Hopefully it will improve in the future. It gave me 30 min of nature time when I was most likely in a large grocery store, and then it completely failed to recognize an evening I spent outside. There’s no way to self correct the data either, and the minutes are presented by the day rather than the hour.
While I think NatureDose is really cute the results are fairly inaccurate, I’ve seen other reviews have the problem where their app doesn’t track their hours of outdoor time, I have the exact opposite problem, my app tracks that I’m outdoors when I’m indoors. I noticed this first when it started tracking that I had reached 30 minutes of outdoor time when I’d been sitting in my room on my phone for several hours. I figured that, hey, maybe this was just because I live in a somewhat nature-filled neighborhood, but then I hit my goal of 120 minutes. Sitting in a hotel room. In the middle of a city. So it’s safe to say NatureDose isn’t exactly accurate.
I’ve been doing the 1000 hours outside challenge for 4-5 years now, so am always tracking outside time.
I read about NatureDose and figured I’d give it a go to see how accurate it was. I like the feature where it tells you the nature score of where you are… but as far as recording outside time, it’s very off. After using it for 4 days, averaging 4-5 hours outside per day, NatureDose only recorded that I was outside for 1 hour/day. And only half of that time counted as “quality” time. I was in my (98.5 scored) yard most of the time - mostly gardening.
So, I don’t know if it just scored poorly because I was too close to my house part of the time. But I will probably not continue to try to use NatureDose to track time.
I just spent over an hour outside with my limb trimmer in the woods and looked at NatureDose found I got credit for 2 minutes. Maybe I’m doing something wrong
I really enjoyed the idea of having a small tracker to encourage me to spend some more time outside! Downloaded, set it up, and let it be for a week (actually much longer since I forgot about it). I had been spending much time outside for the previous week yet NatureDose still showed 0 for time outdoors. Oh well, was worth a shot
App doesn’t work on my phone (iPhone 13 pro, most recent iOS). I uninstalled and reinstalled, checked all the settings & took my dog for an hour walk around my neighborhood. Nothing.
Excited to try NatureDose ; downloaded it and gave it a shot this morning on my ruck. Well, I tucked for an hour in a nature preserve and it gave me only 35 minutes if a dose. Just given how far off time-wise it was, I would say it’s accuracy needs improved. I would have guessed my dose should have been more like 45-55 minutes.
Some days or weeks it’s very good. Others? Not so much. It misses big chunks of time on some days and, on a few occasions, credited large blocks of time when I have barely been out. Then it will kind of reset and take care of business for awhile. I keep thinking I’ll delete it then it straightens up for a few weeks.
I can’t it doesn’t work in my area. I don’t know how to get it to work in my area. I don’t know why my area is out of range of this apt.

I absolutely love what NatureDose represents. It provides a lot of cool insights like references to studies and a Score that rates the level of abundant green nature in your area, which all helps to encourage a healthier lifestyle. It’s still a work in progress and you may have to bear with outdoor time being off but it will continue to get better and it has already helped myself and those I’ve referred to be more conscientious of the nature around us and it’s benefits.
We just went to our local state park and spent 65 minutes walking through trees. NatureDose shows 41 minutes.
The main issue I see with NatureDose has been it over counting my outside time. I was driving in a rural area for about 3 hours and it counted every minute as outdoor nature time. I understand that it’s probably difficult to program NatureDose to account for time spent in a car, but that would be a good thing to look at!
Nature dose fills a key gap in the tracking world. Although you probably do not really want to know how little time you spend outside. NatureDose isn’t perfect in always capturing all your outside time, but it’s remarkably good. The research tidbits are a nice touch, and the other features are great too. NatureDose has really motivated me to spend more time outside.
I love this. I teach people the benefit of being outside for health and well being, and being able to see how long you are out in a week is a game changer for people I think.
The only thing I wish was in NatureDose , I can't find a way to manually update numbers. One day it said I was outside for 200 minutes and I was only out for like 90. Another day I was outside for 4 hours but it counted 40 minutes.
The ability to manually log/edit would be really helpful.
Super interesting and has helped me talk my kids into going on more hikes 🤩
Great app needs to be a little more informative .
It does not seem to always pick up on being in a rural area because it may not be on map yet.
I read about NatureDose in Outside magazine and decided to give it a go. I have found it to be both inspirational and eye opening. I have realized how little time I actually spend outside even though I’m an avid runner and cyclist. It has made me look for ways to try to get outside and into nature more often. There are a few things I’d like to see added to NatureDose to get more out of it like a daily summary and maybe a widget on my Apple Watch but overall I really enjoy NatureDose.
I’d wanted an app like this for a long time. This is exactly what I needed and I’m glad there’s finally a way to quantify my outdoor time (and encourage me to get outside in nature more).
My only request would be a bit more transparency into exactly how the NatureScore is calculated and what factors are most relevant. For some reason, my neighborhood gets a very low score despite having a lot of trees and greenery, and the area around my kid’s school gets a higher score, despite looking exactly the same. I’d love to know why.
To be held in nature is Everything.
I’m sorry but it
NatureDose not only delivers a score for the nature around you, but its pleasing, simple graphics enhance the science and make it enjoyable to interact with. It also motivated me to seek out nature more often than before!

I enjoy seeing the time in nature both at home and when traveling. The information is a gentle nudge to make the outdoors a priority.
After reading about Nature Dose and its scientific underpinnings in Outside magazine, I downloaded it and immediately found that the daily snapshot of my outdoor time made me more likely to get out of my office for fresh air and exercise several times a day. I’ve seen my nature time go up month after month, so much that I’ve increased my weekly goal twice. NatureDose is easy to use and better than any diet!
Super excited to see how my time is spent and motivate to get more time in nature!
NatureDose is intuitive, informative, and effective at helping me achieve a healthier lifestyle. Loving it.
NatureDose is exactly what I need. I exercise a lot but I also live in the city. Sometimes it’s good to make a point to prioritize nature time, and NatureDose helps.
Love NatureDose. Now that it’s winter, the Nature Dose app is helping me get out of the house more. I’ve set a goal to get 30 minutes of outside-nature time three times a week. I’m hoping to crush this goal and do more. Thanks for creating such a great FREE app!
