1Password 8 is an unmitigated disaster

1P8 is a complete mess, across all platforms, with numerous bugs and feature regressions that directly affect people’s workflow, even going so far as to directly break them. When said issues are brought up to the developers (including and especially with the two cofounders, Dave Teare and Roustem Karimov), the vast majority are dismissive at best, and outright rude at worst. So many of the issues are documents on the 1Password Community forums as well as on Reddit that I wont go into each issue here. Beyond the above, 1Password 8 drops support for any kind of local vault, forcing users to store everything on AgileBits servers and the 1Password cloud. In addition, stand-alone licenses have been dropped, forcing users into yet another SaaS subscription. TL;DR, stay far away from 1Password. 1Password used to be the best password manager hands down, but that is sadly no longer the case. Spend your money elsewhere, as there are numerous, and better alternatives out there - (such as Enpass and Minimalist Password Manager).

A big step backwards

The good news is that this is a new app and 1Password 7 still works. There are a ton of dropped feature (compare the settings page for the two apps), as well as things that are broken. No more notifications support. No Apple Watch support. No 1Password browser. Dropbox sync is completely dropped to require a paid subscription. I’m fine with paying for a subscription, and have been for some time, but Dropbox sync was rock-solid and dependable. Vaults can no longer be excluded from auto-fill. The documentation claims the new collections feature can be used to do so, but it simply doesn’t work. Worst of all, things that were built into the previous version and were fast and responsive now dump out to web views. It feels really unsettling when getting sent to a web page for account management by my password manager. Even worse, there’s no access to in-app purchases. In addition to requiring a subscription, it seems we’re now required to give Agile Bits a credit card number. Fundamentally, the entire experience does so much less. This was one of my favorite and most-trusted apps and it feels like it’s becoming enterprise software, where the stuff you need to do isn’t implemented in favor of a dumbed-down least common denominator experience.

Decent Redesign from a product designer

There are some key differences between the new 1Password 8 and the old one. For example being able to tap that search tab really quickly. That said, settings is hidden in an area that doesn’t look like it is a useful button or a button at all. In addition the product team removed the ability to open the app with a passcode. And that is why I will be deleting the 1Password 8 app and reverting back to the old one. For some reason the team thinks that FaceID is more secure than a passcode. Never the case. So now despite having my app auto lock set for 8 hours I have to type in the master password every time because I refuse to put Face ID on my device. I watch my daughter place the phone in front of my wife’s face while she is sleeping all the time. Please make this change 1Password.
