Great app with some hindrances

Loaded Grain up, exported some footage from LumaFusion to get a grade going and it worked very well with the exception of some notable annoyances. First, Grain crashes a LOT when trying to get your own footage opened (2019 iPad Pro 12.9). When opening a lut you made to make further tweak it’ll consistently crash and close Grain 3 times in a row and then you’re good to go (odd). My second issue is that the exported .cube luts need some finagling to work with LumaFusion. From LumaFusion: “This is usually caused by another app registering .cube or .3dl files using a different ‘uniform idendtifier’”. That one just seems like Moment should consider talking to other app creators out there who are the known industry leaders in video production for the ipad to ensure a better user experience for their customers. Maybe use the the same identifier that LumaFusion does, or make a checkable option before you save your lut for different app compatibility. Overall super cool and absolutely what I was missing in my workflow. LumaFusion color correction/grading is not to my taste coming from Premiere Pro. Could use a little tweaking in further updates.

Beautifully designed app with big improvements needed

I’d happily ditch LumaFusion and pay the subscription for Grain, which is gorgeous and feels intuitive when trying to get a specific look for my videos. I love how granular you can get with the settings and the results look fantastic. But Grain is unfortunately so slow and laggy, exporting takes forever, my phone started overheating, and even some of the basic features (e.g., long pressing an effect to delete it) don’t work. I’m using a brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max with a full battery and no other apps open, so I can’t imagine what someone with an older or less powerful phone is going through. If Grain gets a significant optimization update I could easily see it taking the place of both LumaFusion and Spark Camera, which I currently use daily for social media video diaries. Despite the flaws though, the end results do look incredible.

I see potential BUT

The color grading is easy to use/understand but before getting to that part is annoying.
The user interface for everything besides the color grading is pretty bad currently. In order to save your video you have to be IN the edit, you can’t save the video after you finish editing. Also there’s no option to save the video only, it turns those settings into a LUT, you’re able to use the LUT for the next project which isn’t a bad thing but I never intended to save it as a LUT. Also uploading a video isn’t as easy as it should be, navigating through Grain is def annoying waiting on an update that changes the full UI. (iPhone 12 pro max)

Good But Not Great

An app like this has so much potential to take over the game video-editing wise on devices like phones and tablets. Hiccups that were very disappointing are navigation, exporting process and final export. Based off my experience SO FAR the quality of projects are reduced tremendously from the original. If they develop a way to export in 4K or in the original resolution that would produce a much better experience. At the end of the day, I love Moment regardless.

Outrageously high price for the apps features

As a long time Moment customer, I’m pretty disappointed. I’m not going to invest in another subscription app that feels half baked / beta and not ready for prime time. I’d much rather purchase an app outright that’s ready for use, but the price being asked is just outrageously high.

I love supporting the company but I can’t recommend Grain, even as a professional colorist. Darkroom is far superior in most respects.

Video editor

I m trying to used more and more my iPad in location like coffee places or just in parks, away from home . Fresh air is always good.

Nice pictures, easy to use.

I’ve used it for some wedding photos this weekend. It is simple to use and the photos are lovely.

Poor software, great idea

First off, figuring how to close out of the price sheet for the free version was aids. After messing around with this app many of my clips have white artifacts around them. I understand the codec isn’t ideal … but why sell software that isn’t ready? Or try to support codec which isn’t ready?

It’s finally here!

Finally, great this app and vintage look program. I love moment even more now.

Love it

My favorite app

Full of bugs, poor quality fx, UX is terrible

Grain needs a complete overhaul.

Loving the app… but…

Loving the looks that can be created (& controlled!)- but- rendering speed is very slow (at least compared to LumaFusion …)- it seems that on an M1 iPad Pro that should be quicker! I know this is so new- barely out of Beta- can ‘t wait to see Grain tuned a bit more… Thanks!

Unusable

I love Moment and enjoy the RTRO app and the Camera app (and have their complete collection of lenses and several accesories). I really, really love the idea of this app as a color editing app as what is available in LumaFusion is pretty limited. However, Grain just doesn’t cut it - in fact, it’s unusable. My 2020 iPad Pro overheats while running Grain. I’ve tried editing 1080p clips, long and short, and 4k clips and the same overheating no matter what, so there needs to be some optimization to processing to reduce the load on the hardware. The second issue is that the clip selector only sometimes appears. I had to shut down and relaunch Grain just to get the selection tool to appear, and even then about 85% of my tries it didn’t import the video I had selected. The project creation tool is either not at all intuitive, or it just doesn’t work properly, I can’t tell which. I will definitely check back after a handful of updates because I love the concept, but at this point it’s absolutely not worth paying for a subscription, or even keeping a free version due to the hardware issues.

Another overpriced useless app from Moment

The pricing on these apps is ridiculously high for something that is designed to make a TikTok video look the same as other apps out there with more free options. There isn’t even a settings option on this or rotation support to use with their anamorphic lens. So only shoot vertically and there seems to be a specific time limit on the video given it won’t even touch a 14 second video I have. So it is geared to towards certain users. Not people making long format content on their phone.

Frustrating UI

I’ve ran into this before with the Retro App but the UI is frustrating. This needs a quick update to the UI to make this more user friendly. To get into editing a video (photos are no where to be found) you go through 3 too many options to get there.

1. Open App
2. Create New Look
3. Click the Tiny + Symbol
4. Create New (again)
5. Select Photo or Video
6. Click ADD
7. Then Good Luck finding what you added. (Hint: you have to select ascending or descending to have your selections appear).
8. Highlight Video
9. Click Next
10. Tap to Edit
11. Done.

I’ll wait for an update and revisit, I like Moments products but the this one needs a little push in the right direction.

Not worth it if you don’t get Grain+

Grain has a great premise, but unfortunately, much like RTRO, in my opinion it’s pretty useless unless you buy the subscription. Totally understandable seeing as Moment has a history of great quality but it would be nice to be able to do a bit more with just the free version!

Gold

Anything Moment touches or creates is Amazing! Thank you Moment!

How do I try out the free version?

I checked the description in Grain Store to confirm that you could try a limited version for free before paying for a subscription. When I launch Grain , I can’t get past the subscription screen. If there’s a way to try it first, I can’t find it.

Can't open the app

I really can't comment on anything regarding Grain since I'm not able to open it it shows the open window and when you skip the introduction it's just turns off Grain is still open but nothing is available to be used definitely needs to be addressed

Not doing another subscription

I already have spent hundreds of dollars on your products. Not doing a subscription to another camera app with a regurgitation of the other app formulas that exist for less. Cheers.

By

I mean it’s ok

You pretty much gotta pay for anything worthwhile tho

Underwhelmed

Another subscription based app and as a invested Moment customer I feel underwhelmed and a bit disappointed. I find the UI a bit confusing and unfriendly. Without the subscription it basically leaves Grain useless.
