About Reeder 4

If you want to use a self-hosted service, Reeder should work with services which use the Fever or the Google Reader API.

Please note: If you rely on image caching, this feature unfortunately wasn't ready for the 4.0 release but it's in the works.

A news reader for iOS with support for various sync services.

Or just standalone RSS (without syncing) if you don't want to use any service.

Good for a .0 release, still needs some polish

After Reeder 3 wasn't updated for around a year I worried that my favorite RSS reader was gone, so I'm totally and pleasantly surprised to see that it's now back as an entirely new release. That said, some things are missing from Reeder 3 that would be nice to have back, and what appear to be a few possible bugs still need to be fixed. "Group by Feed" is missing and should return, hyperlinks should be underlined to differentiate them from bold text, Fever's "Hot" feeds is missing, and for some reason when re-opening Reeder in portrait mode I just get a blank page with the Reeder icon and the name of the account or folder I had selected but no feeds displayed (I'm not sure what the difference is between most of the layouts are or if changing this option would fix this behavior or if it's a bug). Like image caching, I hope that these just didn't make the 4.0 release and will be back soon. I'm not sure if I'm ready to switch over from Reeder 3 quite yet but I can see myself transitioning over as Reeder 4 matures.

Best News Reading App, Period.

I’ll write a more detailed review later but the take home message is this is the one of the greatest iOS apps ever made. I’m not being hyperbolic here — the design puts many of Apple’s own apps to shame, the simplicity of the UI is stunning, and there’s one feature that nobody seems to be talking about that I think is massive... a dedicated “Reader View” button on webpages. Of course ideally speaking you’d never need the web view to load in the first place but sadly a lot of websites don’t offer full article RSS.

My only problem with Reeder4? Getting people to buy it. I’m not saying there should be a free version... I just gift it to people and force them to use it... but I’m worried this could limit growth of Reeder4 . Word on mouth helps though. If you’re on the fence about getting Reeder4, here’s one random internet dude telling you to go ahead and make the plunge. You won’t regret it.

Great Update

I am loving the upgrade from Reeder 3. Having it be free would be nice but this is not some one-off update.

Using Feed Wrangler, I pull in a lot of items through a lot of subscriptions sorted into a lot of smart feeds with and without image previews. This new version feels more responsive and my feeds seem to be ready to read through more quickly compared to the same setup using Reeder 3.

Using the new “Bionic Reading” feature with a serif style font and dark mode enabled along with a little extra line spacing does make extended reading sessions easier to get through. I think this is a great new feature Silvio as integrated into this new version of Reeder. It did take me about one hour of reading to get used to it, so I say give it a try and you might like it too.

I would like to see the return of image caching soon. That is the only bit of feedback I have right now that resembles a complaint. I can live without it and I don’t think it missing (just for a short while I hope) requires me dinging my five-star rating.

Given the consistent quality of what Silvio Rizzi delivers and the pretty decent improvements that Reeder 4 provides over Reeder 3, the one-time price for Reeder4 is certainly worth paying.

So nice!

My first instinct when I saw the screen captures in Reeder4 Store was that this didn’t look like much of an upgrade. I questioned the $5 purchase, but bit the bullet because Reeder hasn’t disappointed since I first started using it.

I’m glad I got it. It’s definitely hard to capture what’s so nice about Reeder4 in a screen grab. Everything about it feels smoother and snappier. The reading experience feels much better as well, given some of the changes in the font and linking.

Quite simply, there are a lot of small, subtle details that you don’t really notice until you use them, and once you do, you’ll find them quite satisfying. Whether you’re a returning Reeder user or a new RSS customer, buy Reeder4. You won’t regret it.

The Gold Standard

I’m not sure why others are critical of Reeder4, because Reeder 4 is a more refined and polished version of Reeder 3. For me, Reeder4 has been stable and now downloads articles faster and more consistently. The new features are also great. Is it my imagination or do the animations and swipe gestures feel more fluid and polished? It’s rendering and display of articles is truly improved and cleaner—it’s just beautifully simple. I’ve tried so many others, but if you are a serious reader who appreciates an app that gets out of the way to allow you to focus on content, this is the gold standard. And, thankfully, it’s a one time purchase instead of a subscription.

No auto update

Actually, I think it is better to add an option for auto-update. Because the auto-update only update the articles without auto scroll down which makes me hard to track where I am. I really enjoy that I can have fully control of the time to update the list. Please leave it as a feature! Please! I really like Reeder4! I will change my rate to 5 if you guys decide to make it a feature. Otherwise, auto-update is really annoying to me. Thanks, guys!

Love reeder been using it since version 1

Great update, dark mode wasn’t working properly but it was my own gd fault.

Update*** oops I had smart invert colors on!!!!!!!
Problem: dark mode became light all of a sudden pretty sure it’s a hug, I set the appearance to black, but when I open any article the actual reading view is white background black text.....if I switch the mode to light it becomes vice versus, dark reading view, light list view....it was working fine until it wasn’t in pretty sure it’s some sort of bug but I really don’t want to reset to defaults because I meticulously adjusted it to resemble the setup I had on reeder 3...

Solid RSS app and great development team

I gave Reeder a 4-star rating before, so I’m back to proudly give them a 5-star rating. I left off one star because I felt Reeder4 could be more functional with arrow key navigation and shortcut keys. Silvio updated Reeder4 with that functionality within the next sub-release. Reeder is awesome for RSS power users. It has great integrations, features, and just keeps improving because you have a really attentive developer. Every time I feel like there might be room for improvement (e.g. reading mode), it will literally get updated within a few sub-releases. This is a must-have RSS app.

Feedback

I really like this new layout, especially on the iPad. There are some of missing features from Reeder 3 especially offline mode for reading later. Also, I hope in future developer team would add a new full-screen option especially landscape mode to give more roomy to read instead visible of top and bottom bars. Please give customers customize and arrange favorite buttons, able to change bar at the top, bottom, or side. An option to swipe horizontally. Add more gestures. Thank you for keeping it better and I am a big fan of Reeder4 for many years.

Must Buy

Reeder4 is incredible and I’ve used every version since it was released so long ago. Keep up the good work!

Not a fan of a small change in 4.2.4. I don’t like the change in behavior when touching and holding an article. Before it would display a simple ‘mark above or below as read’ and now it shows redundant ‘Mark unread’ and star options, moving the useful buttons further away. The buttons also show up on the left side which doesn’t work well for right handers. Reverting to the way it was before would be great!

I was really excited for Reeder 4...

...but after buying and setting it up I found that it’s a mixed bag of missing features, inconsistent animations and lagginess. Sync times are really slow (using Feedly and don’t have this problem with Reeder 3 on an iPhone XS Max), the animations are inconsistent and laggy (sometimes they’re spot on buttery but most of the times they’re not) and some features are missing (small things like moving the read all button from left to right, pulling up to mark as read, feed source disappearing after reading all articles, etc)

I do hope the developer takes a speedy approach to updating and fixing all the annoyances that this version has and adding the missing features. But, for the time being I’ll stay using R3.

Excellent v4 and Excellent 4.0.1!!!!! (1 request though)

I'm so happy with the new Reader :D
v4 is awesome and 4.0.1 changes are great too.
The last change I would want for it to be perfect: Not sure what the 4th button on the bottom toolbar when reading an article is called, but it's great, but would like that activated to be the default view, and have an up/previous button in its place like v3. Thanks so much!!! Oh yeah and please don't forget about image caching, would be great if that worked with the new "4th button view" for offline reading. Also a few things other people mentioned.

Great polished UI, but much worse functionality

I was using Reeder 3 for about 2 or more years. It was the best rss reader I've ever had. When I saw fourth version of Reeder4, I bought it immediately. UI is beautiful, animations are really smooth, new options are fine, but features like Bionic Reader (replacement for Mercury Reader) is much worse, it cannot read full sites, sometimes it just bolds all of text which was available in normal version of article. In other cases it just do same job as mercury reader. I am really disappointed and waiting for new updates, in this time I am going back to third version, because UI isn't everything.

Unequivocally the Best

For years now Reeder has been the best RSS reader in Reeder4 Store. This new version made some changes, and at first there were some lost features from previous releases. But the developer showed an amazing talent for listening to users and addressing their complaints, and now it seems to have feature parity with previous versions, plus a *lot* of excellent quality-of-life improvements. It is now very easy to say this is absolutely worth the upgrade from Reeder 3...or any other RSS reader you may be using.

Made me love RSS again

Feedly and the various third-party RSS apps were my main method of reading my favorite sites for the longest time - but I have been using Apple News for the better part of two years.
I decided to give Reeder a shot - at the very least to follow the sites not included on Apple News. Over the last two weeks I’ve started adding all of my subscriptions into Reeder. It is so convenient and the UI is beautiful and simple. It’s the simplicity of Unread mixed with the customization (but not as overwhelming) of Fiery Feeds.
