Follow these steps to resolve intermittent Reeder 4 app issues:

Force Stop the Reeder 4 App
1. On android, goto "Settings" » click Reeder 4 app. » click "Force Stop".

Update Reeder 4 to the latest version on PlayStore

Clear Reeder 4 App Cache and Data:
1. On your device, goto "Settings" » click "Apps" » select "Reeder 4 app" » click "Storage" » click "Clear Data" option. This Clears both data and cache.
2. Relaunch Reeder 4.

This issue is usually caused by your network. Here is how to fix:

On android, goto "Settings" » "Apps" or "Manage Apps" tab.

Again, got Reeder 4 » "Mobile Data" » "Allow Background Data Usage".
Go back to "Settings" » "Connections" » "Mobile Network" » "Network Mode".

If you want to use a self-hosted service, Reeder should work with services which use the Fever or the Google Reader API. A news reader for iOS with support for various sync services. Or just standalone RSS (without syncing) if you don't want to use any service. Please note: If you rely on image caching, this feature unfortunately wasn't ready for the 4. 0 release but it's in the works.
