Device is good but app is terrible

This is not a good purchase for someone who is already nutritionally literate and logs their food with an app such as Lose It. Not only is there no way to connect to LoseIt, but even worse, there is no way to even manually input your macronutrient numbers for the day from Lose It. Instead, the this app app asks you to RE-LOG all your food within Lumen and their food library is terrible. The other option is to log only your net carb servings which is a very crude measure of net carbs and it doesn’t allow you to enter fractions of a serving. LoseIt syncs with many, many apps so it’s surprising this feature is not there given how many other reviews have mentioned it. The support is also a problem. All over their website and in Lumen they say you can email support, but when you do that you get an auto-reply saying “Email support not available.” The only way to get support is using the in-app “chat” in which they don’t reply for hours or until the next day. All told, this feels like it’s about a year premature for mass release. I plan on returning and repurchasing at a later date when they’ve worked out some of these kinks. I’m not going to pay an expensive monthly subscription while they’re still beta testing. I do worry about them honoring they 30 day money back guarantee policy given how poor the support has been so far.

Update: device malfunctioned after four days of use.

BUYER BEWARE! You basically can't get a refund for anything so you lose as soon as you open it

1. I just received it and in downloading Lumen , it doesn't show up on my phone. It's downloaded somewhere. I input info but if I have to fish thru the apps list to use it all the time this will be short lived. Any other app I've downloaded just shows in my Home Screen and I put it where I want it. Already sorry I spent the money on it and haven't used it yet. Customer service is a bot and a real person takes at least a day to reply. I realize I've already lost money but at least trying to get the membership fee back since I can't use it and don't want to at this point. As a RN I was curious to see how well this really worked. I'd give a 0 if I could. The canned app support response saying to contact customer support is laughable. What support...doesn't exist
2. I will amend the support comment, it takes a day or two but I was finally able to get Lumen on my phone. Found out you can't cancel the membership or anything basically, so it's free money for them. Who wouldn't want to run a company that doesn't offer refunds. I've dealt with some crappy companies but this takes the cake. If anyone wants a free this app, I got you! You'll get as much help from me as you would them, zero!

Complete waste of time and money

I did everything exactly as they suggested, and gained weight. I logged every exercise session, steps, fasting, sleep, and every morsel I put in my mouth. Did not lose one ounce in six months. The scores were in the flexible range from the beginning. The associated Facebook group is heavily moderated, and there is criticism not support. There are also private coaches in the group drumming up business for themselves. The this app support is the usual canned answers you get like Mayo Clinic, nothing special or insightful. You get all different support people if you ask questions. Check their math: add up the macros they give you, multiply the carbs and protein by 4 and the fat by 9 to check the calories -- and the program gives you "unlimited" for most vegetables, so if your plate is mostly vegetables as it should be, the numbers can't possibly add up if you try yo reach the macros. I wasted my time and energy giving them all my details each support session -- forget it. It's the same basic answers that don't work, and if you explain how you just did each thing they suggest, the answer is ultimately "go consult a professional." So don't waste your money on this.

Lost a customer after years

Was a customer for years and recommended to patients/clients/friends. This year, they changed the daily nutrition guidelines which are supposedly tailored to you. The nutrition guidelines have now been an issue for many people I know and actually reversed the progress they had made for years. Also, Lumen will not let you use an older device youve owned and paid for, for years, unless you pay the subscription fee monthly. New devices can be used though w/out subscription for taking breath readings! You also have to do the diet they recommend daily and track everything or it lowers your score for the week, even after it shows you’ve been in great metabolic health. Lumen does not sync with other devices/apps so you have to enter all food here and the database is not as large as most well known apps. Corrections to item nutrition are rarely updated if submit a correction for their database to help other users have the correct info. No longer need the nutrition advice which used to work well before they changed their program so I’ve cancelled. It was good while it lasted.

Good device, clunky app, fake AI recipes

The device is awesome and definitely a great purchase. It’s better at determining my carb needs than a CGM. Lumen is clunky however. Logging exercise is horrible. And it doesn’t sync with Fitbit, which is my main fitness app.

My main beef is with the recipe, which are horrifying, fake nonsense with AI photos. One sample recipe: 1 cup ham, 3 Tbsp. butter, 1/2 cup collard greens. Weird. Who needs 3 Tbsp. of butter to cook half a cup of greens? It’s better to use 1/2 tsp. olive oil and use the rest of the fat calories on avocado or nuts, a healthier fat than butter. And the pic is clearly AI. The ham is actually beef slices. The chia and yogurt seed pic is laughable with the seeds sitting on top. Everyone knows chia seeds absorb liquid. And you shouldn’t eat them before they do that because it’s not good for your digestion. You will need to drink a lot of water. It’s like eating psyllium husk without water. It could even make you choke.

I really wish they would use REAL recipes made by a REAL human with a REAL picture. Or just eliminate the feature because anyone who doesn’t know how to cook would make these recipes and be extremely disappointed.

Does not sync steps

I don’t carry around my phone. I wear a Fitbit. The steps accounted for can mislead the data used to provide my daily recommendations. I hope this changes. There can be so much more instruction in the actual functions of Lumen so I use it correctly. There are two places to read a breath without explanation to the functions. I wish the breaths were time stamped. Lastly, the food recommendations do not total the recommended macros. I use My Fitness Pal app and its is much more accurate as many foods co rain a combination of macros. I hope this app can sync with My Fitness Pal App as well.
I love the device. I’m making exact recommendations because I want it to be superior and used to it’s fullest extent. My FAVORITE is Ulkire, my this app advisor. She is patient an amazing and always there to support me and answer my questions. If it weren’t for her I would’ve thrown this thing in the garbage because there was no manual in it’s use, just the science behind the concepts.
Keep going this app! I’m a professional dieter! We can do this!

Lumen illuminates the workings of your body metabolism

This is a tool that gives you insight into how your metabolism works, what it needs each day to be its best and if you want it can inform you how to eat to build muscle lose: weight ( remember you have to do the work) I had tried so many diets (ww, keto, adkins, physicians weight loss, on and on ) over the past ten years trying to lose the pre/post menopause fat. Everything worked at first until it didn’t and none were sustainable and all of them seemed to eliminate a food group and/or require ‘special food, points, calculations . I came across this app on Dr Becky’s website and thought I would try. I have only been on it a few weeks and have already gained so much insight in how my body uses food and from there how to get it to burn fat. You get a reading from the this app device. Before buying I suggest you go to their website and read about it and see if it’s for you. When you purchase one, watch all the informational videos. I hope that I can report back in a year (2025) and give you a year end report. I am 64 and plan on loosing the 40 meno pounds I gained in my 50’s!

Good tracker needs improvement

So far I love how this thing is helping me make better food choices and understand what my metabolism is doing, but Lumen and especially the food log could use a lot of improvement and cleaning up.

When I scan foods into the log it usually doesn’t let me change the unit of measure so I can’t log an accurate amount of what I ate and am forced to create a custom food every time. For example, I scan my oat milk and it automatically logs 1 cup. I only used half a cup but I can’t change the 1 to a 1/2 and I can’t change the Cups to another unit of measure like ounces. So annoying. Logging food is time consuming enough. Look at the Lose It logging app and be more like them. It takes too many clicks to get to a meal I logged to edit it as well. I should be able to seamlessly add, change and remove foods from meals.

I also feel like Lumen is too jumbled with videos and stuff on the main page. I’d like this to be cleaned up and simplified. Food log on one page. Breath measurements on another, weekly/monthly summery on another. Make it simple and clean.

Very happy with Lumen

After a couple of days of getting familiar with this app (it is not as intuitive as some apps) I really like the insights I’m getting on how my body metabolizes fuel. I’ve lost 2 lbs in 7 days and I’m not very overweight. I just need to drop 15 lbs. I like how individualized the plan is for each person and how this app acknowledges that each one of us is very different in how our metabolism works. I wish the food tracker had more food options to choose from. Another tracker I’ve used had every imaginable food on it and a huge variety of ways the food could be weighed or measured. I’m pretty sure that this app will update to add more food and ways of measurement. However, I do like that this app will allow you just to measure by fat, protein, and carbohydrate in each food. Overall, I think the this app is a terrific product and has many benefits to it helping people not only lose weight but also gain and maintain muscle and fitness as well. I would encourage anyone to check out this product.

Lumen experience

I waited a long time to save the money to buy my this app device. Then it got delivered to the wrong address. It took another week for FedEx to get it back to me. I was so excited to get it. Then, I was so frustrated because I couldn’t breathe in or out long enough. I practiced and practiced. It took a few days and still sometimes it takes me several times. I haven’t lost any weight yet, but I am learning how food, stress and fasting effect my metabolism.
Stress especially. Twice I have tested soon after being upset and I went straight to burning almost entirely carbs. I also have found that about 15 hours of fasting put me in a great fat burn, but 16 started shifting back to carbs. I haven’t been super great at following my recommended carbs for each day. And I haven’t been doing workouts. I can’t wait to find out which kinds of workouts are best for me.

Still Learning

I have more awareness and a physical instrument to show me what my body is doing on a cellular level. I started off 361lbs, 5’2ft and have already lost 9lbs 1 full week in.

My lifestyle is sedentary, no energy, painful joints, and no interest in working out. I work most days remote and sitting at a desk in meetings all day. However, I’ve been more active now since getting the this app, than I’ve been in the past 30 years.

There is a learning curve, but having the measurements help you make informed choices on if you are going to stuff yourself with the wrong foods and continue sitting doing nothing, or if you perhaps need to do something to burn off some carbs before you intake food again. I’m no skinny chick, and it takes much effort on my end. But I had to decide, do I want to continue feeling the aches of my body being this heavy, or do I do something about it now. I’m choosing now!

Personal Coach

Thank you this app for assigning me a personal coach who manages all the very confusing and complicated stuff about my body and synthesizes it in clear, concise, achievable action items for me!

Your meals: I don’t have to eat and can change things out. I am not a veggie eater never have been but when I look at your prep guidelines I get ideas for vegetables. I still may not be eating the amount of veggies I need to but it’s more than I have ever eaten! And because they taste good I even eat as snacks!! This has drastically reduced my cravings for fast simple carbs. I was just laid off and I hope I can afford to keep up my membership but I am determined to keep this success going. Notice I haven’t mentioned how much weight have lost? Well I have lost but it doesn’t matter as much as how good I’m feeling and the empowering feeling I have knowing how to take care of my body’s needs!! Thank You again! Joining community next!

Loving my Lumen, but $$$

I had pretty much stalled with weight loss for months before I saw an instagram ad for this. I thought it was pretty pricey for only a year of the service, but as a low-carb eater I wanted an easier way to know if I was burning fats or carbs throughout the day. this app’s macro recommendations meant I needed to up my calories by 400 each day, which I thought was crazy but worth a try. I just finished my 2nd full week with this app and I went from the first week figuring out my new diet and blowing 4s and 5s (almost exclusively burning carbs after fasting) to my second week blowing mostly 3s (a mix of both fats and carbs), and today I blew my first 2 (mostly fats)! Since I’m aiming for weight loss, none of this really mattered if I didn’t see progress on the scale or in other measurements, but in 2 weeks I’ve lost 3 pounds. By eating a lot more of the right balance of macros. Keep in mind I had spent months eating less food and losing nothing, even gaining half of the time. I’ll keep using my this app until my subscription is up. I don’t think it’s necessarily worth a 2nd year because it’s so expensive and only provides one real measurement. After a year I’ll be used to the recommended routine and know how my body is burning carbs/fats after certain meals and workouts so I don’t see the point in spending that much money a 2nd time. If it was cheaper, I might keep it but the costs outweigh the benefits right now.

Super useful product

I’ve been using my this app everyday now after I gained the COVID-19-10! I had to do something. I was at my highest weight ever. With this app, I was able to lose that 10 plus 10 more. I’m still on track to lose more. It’s a very gentle device and app..it’s never going to yell at you, berate you, etc. It just gently gently guides you in the morning as to what level of carbs you should shoot for...I usually am in the target area of 60 carbs...sometimes 15 carbs less, sometimes 15 more. When I have streaks of successful breath measurements after successive low carb days (like 45 grams) where the device says I’m burning fat like crazy, it will test my metabolism by hiking up the carbs to a high(ish) level, just to keep me metabolically flexible. I’ve tried total keto for over a year, and that just didn’t work for me. Likewise counting calories hasn’t worked for decades. Similarly, with carb loading, that just made lose and regain the same few pounds. This is working. 20 pounds down! I will keep with it.

Excited for my results

I’ve very much enjoyed so far the this app experience. I have been using this program for one week. My goal is to release 60 lbs of old, stored energy; and, I feel I have already shed pounds just in this first week. I am definitely feeling significantly lighter. Since experiencing menopause, I could not feel my metabolism generating for fat burning at all. This week, I have felt it switch back on again. My favorite part of the program is that it is helping me with my goal of a lifestyle upgrade regarding understanding best food choices for daily consumption, what I have observed as “conscious eating.” I am choosing foods that are healthy, delicious, and that fit into my current goals for weight loss based on the nutritional make up of each item. The this app tracker alllows us to see what foods fit into our carb/fat/protein combo for the day, making it a fun way to explore each delicious option. I’m already eating a lot more yummy vegetables I would not have previously selected; and, everything is tasting delicious. So far, I am meeting my goals…weight loss where the experience is fun, enjoyable, simple, and feels natural. Thank you, ladies whom created this awesome metabolism tracker, and thank you to the entire this app team! I am excited for my 6 month results!!! 🥳🎁💪🌈💖

Hacking

Until I started using this device I was so confused. Eat this, don’t ever eat that, you can eat this, oh don’t eat that when …. In menopause you genuinely feel like nothing works no matter how hard you try. Efforts I made 10 years ago would get some results but now nothing.
Then tracking macros! I had no idea how to begin.
With this app, the first thing I learned was there are hidden carbs everywhere. I learned that certain things in my control can keep you from burning fat like sleep and over exercise and too much fasting. The this app shows you what effect each activity you do has on your metabolism.
My first two weeks I thought I would never get below 3 ( burning carbs and fat ) but I added a consistent workout to my routine and bam. 1s and 2s ( fat burning ). It’s amazing. I had been meal planning and working out here and there with little results for 7 weeks and lost 7 pounds. Week 8 and 9 using this app I am down 13. With just little tweaks. Amazing.

Great analytics. Limited food log database.

I've been using the this app metabolism tracker for a week now, and I have mixed feelings about it. On the positive side, the analytics provided by the device are fantastic. It offers detailed insights into my metabolic state, which has been incredibly helpful for tailoring my diet and exercise routine.

However, the food log database leaves much to be desired. It's significantly lacking in variety, making it difficult to log everything I eat accurately. I've encountered several instances where scanning barcodes results in errors, with Lumen informing me that the barcode cannot be found. This can be quite frustrating, especially when trying to maintain an accurate food diary.

Overall, while the this app device itself is great and the analytics are top-notch, the food log aspect needs substantial improvement. Partnering with a more comprehensive database like MyFitnessPal could potentially solve these issues and make the this app experience much more seamless and user-friendly.

9 months later

I reviewed this probably a month after receiving my this app and was a bit critical due to a technical glitch that was taking too long to fix but it was fixed in the end. 9 months later I am down 15lbs this has happened because I was regimented in the use of my this app and logging food. I do think I would have reached my goal weight if I was stricter with my food intake but what I found was that I can enjoy life without the restrictions that diets put on you, allowing my weight loss to happen slowly and not missing out on treats. That being said I would not recommend this device is you spend the majority of your life eating out or are completely unorganized and spend most of your time procrastinating over things. I haven’t subscribed to their meals as I love to cook. I also enjoy their videos. They are short and each presenter appears to be sincere in their encouragement.

Finally their support team is excellent and with 3 months left on my subscription I plan to sign up for another year so that when I reach my goal weight I will change my plan to metabolic fitness over weight loss.

Lost 3lbs first week and not disappointed

I love knowing that I’m doing the right thing breaking my fast at the right time, burning optimal fat, and never feeling deprived of food. I have more energy, which is improving my PB game! lol! I like getting back in the habit of eating right! Sometimes you just need the extra guidance with their meal plan suggestions as well as knowing your this app level. I like the bit of information a little at a time through videos and or quick reads.. I like how it’s individualized YOU on a daily basis. The food ideas are very simple. You can get the hang of how to do it, And incorporate your own favorite foods and recipes. all those things are very motivating. The only thing I would improve or wish for would be that I could connect my exercise with my Fitbit or maybe even an Apple Watch. It does use Apple Health, but those steps aren’t accurate because I’m not taking my phone when I’m playing a physical game like Pickleball. Currently, it seems to only connect with Garmin and Apple Health. But the good news is, I can put my exercise in Lumen manually. This teaches or reteaches you how to eat healthy and how to eat carbs throughout the day. Lesson: Good carbs aren’t bad-they are your friend!! I LOVE IT!!!!

Amazing results using Lumen

I’ve never written a review for any app before but I’m so impressed by the results I’ve experienced using this app that I wanted to share. I’ve used Lose It to track my diet and calories for years and have achieved decent weight loss results until a couple of years ago when I seemed to plateau eating 1,800 calories a day. The only difference in my weight seemed to result from how much exercise I did. Using this app for just over a week, I lost a pound (I know not much) but I’ve noticed my clothes fitting a little looser and I was eating around 2,200 calories per day at the recommendation of the this app app. I’ve been really focused on achieving the recommended macro portions (fat/carb/protein) which I never really paid attention to using Lose It alone. I’ve felt completely full, no cravings, etc and I’m eating stuff I like. Biggest change to my diet since using this app is doubling my protein intake. Really looking forward to seeing my results after a few months.
