I’m using MTIRehearScore for the first time, we’re a couple of weeks into rehearsals of 9 to 5. I would usually use some kind of music composition app to help learn my part, but that involved inputting each note one at a time, sometimes for more than one vocal part so I could hear how the harmonies fit together or better understand where a part came in, which was all very time consuming (and I usually just didn’t even bother with the accompaniment). MTIRehearScore makes singling out my part a lot easier… but not quite easy enough. For one, the vocal parts aren’t always clearly labeled or they may be called different terms by the musical director-for example in the opening number I sing the alto part for the first chorus, which is the melody, but in MTIRehearScore it seems that part is second soprano. Another issue along these same lines is that I do switch from alto to second soprano within the same song, but there is no way to change that so I can play the alto part and then the second soprano unless I just pause the song entirely, and my only other option is to play both parts simultaneously.
The biggest drawback between MTIRehearScore and my previous method of playing back my vocal part is that I could change the instrument for my vocal part so that I could easily differentiate it from the other parts. With MTIRehearScore, the vocal parts are all played on piano, which means it blends together with the other parts and even the accompaniment. Yes, obviously you can mute the other parts, but when it comes to things like trying to figure out where a part comes in over the backing track or trying to hear what your part sounds like against, say, the other parts of the harmony or overlapping leads, well, it all just sounds like piano. It would be EXTREMELY nice if we could get a handful of different sounds (personally, I always tended to go for a xylophone or marimba) to use for the vocal parts.
Being able to skip between sections is great, I do kind of wish you could have all of the lyrics in MTIRehearScore instead of just the first line of a section.
It seems like there is some way for the music director/director/etc. to make changes in things like tempo so it syncs with the cast’s app, which is super nice! However we’ve had several instances where it was decided to cut a few measures (things like dance breaks, etc.) and I assume this is easier to do when doing the actual show, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that within this rehearsal app without manually skipping to the next section. This has led to a lot of confusion and false starts in our actual rehearsal since we’ve decided to cut those measures but we still end up sitting through them waiting for our next cue.
(I could be entirely wrong about this part since I’m just an ensemble member and not the music director, this is just my understanding of it.)
Other than that, MTIRehearScore ’s pretty solid, although it’s common for it to stop working altogether until the person closes it out entirely and starts it up again.
