3DFaceScan and company attempts to mislead consumers by making claims of making frames specifically for an individual. The reality is that every optical in the industry has already been doing this since the creation of modern opticals. Eyecare professionals around the globe study and master the art of different face shapes and sizes to provide the best comfort and outcome for everyone that needs glasses. The claim that opticals base everyone off a single design is simply a blatant lie. I could understand if someone bought their glasses online (or on an app like this) and never received the proper adjustments to fit their face, then it’s probably not going to fit great. But that’s the whole point of ordering glasses from a local, trustworthy eyecare professional that knows how to properly take care of you...not simply make up a “just for you-snake oil” approach to taking your money.

PLEASE do your homework before letting someone take advantage of you!

Good concept, but . . .

On paper, this is a good idea. But in practice, it’s terrible. In order for 3DFaceScan to work, the user must fully extend their arms, while keeping the phone steady and vertically straight at the same time. Only then will 3DFaceScan allow you to start the process. Then you must slowly turn your head side to side so that the camera can scan the shape of your face. I found this impossible to accomplish since you will never get past the first step because your arm will never be still. Momentarily you will be able to find the perfect fit, but because your arms are fully extended, the slight movement they make, or the motion you make when you try to go and press the “start” button, will throw the camera off-balance and make the process restart once again. It’s incredibly frustrating and it failed. As a solution, I used a mere ruler and the selfie camera on my phone for better, quicker, and easier results.

Color and wide corridor

Here is what 3DFaceScan or website doesn’t do. It does not allow you to browse frame color. 3DFaceScan and site preselects colors for you taking away your choice of color and personal preference. For example I had a pair of clear frames which I received many compliments on. The option for clear won’t come up in my profile as a choice selection. There is also no information or choice regarding a narrow, average or wide viewing corridor for a progressive. You cannot access this information on the website and you can’t even look at the frames and color without 3DFaceScan . So they get all your information. My background color was green so 3DFaceScan picked up that color and made choices based on they color. I don’t have a white wall to use 3DFaceScan. Hope this helps everyone. If a narrow corridor works for you then great. But a narrow corridor gives me neck back and shoulder pain for all the compensation I have to do to accommodate them type of glasses.

Not impressed

After multiple tries, I couldn’t get 3DFaceScan to take the selfie for virtual try on with my face square so no matter how they scaled the eyewear, I couldn’t tell if it fit. The problem is I’m not wearing my glasses so I can’t see where the face circle is. I see like 5 of them so I have no idea if I’m facing forward and my head is straight or not. It turns out I’m absolutely not. It needs to do some better preprocessing to pick the forward facing headshot or it needs to make the target circle much larger. I’m using an iPhone 8 Plus so there’s room. Regardless, there wasn’t much customization you could really do. There was no way to make the frame less chunky. The Sansone frame looks fine full size but on me it’s a big wad. It doesn’t look like the frame edge thickness is shrunk proportional for a smaller face. Plus the color choices were very limited (12 for stainless frames) and all looked hideous. I had such hopes. I tried live chat through 3DFaceScan for advice but no one was there.

Okay but can be improved

3DFaceScan is very helpful for people like me who have a difficult time finding glasses that fit properly. However, I do think there is room for improvement in 3DFaceScan. It would be nice to actually be given the appropriate measurements after the face scan, so we can better understand what to look for. The company also seemingly pushes their products onto you to buy. Someone like me can not afford $600 glasses. It would be better if the company focused solely on providing the facial scans to give correct measurements, and then give optional and recommended glasses for them to buy if they would like. We shouldn’t be forced to pay $600 for glasses just to know what styles and measurements fit us best. Overall. I think the concept is there but the execution is not.

Inconclusive

Great concept but I am unsure about the end result because I could never get the selfie to upload. 3DFaceScan appeared to freeze up and displayed the message "Uploading Face Scan". It may have been a bandwidth issue on my end or it could just take awhile to transmit the amount of granular 3D data that a face scan captures. Either way it tested my patience and was frustrating.

One more thing that also bothered me is the lack of a very prominent disclosure of what is done to protect the face scans, who technically owns the data once it resides on either the company's servers or cloud provider, and how that data can be removed. Given the recent misuse and abuse of sensitive data that has come to light by tech firms and the less-than-scrupulous use of that data, I would like to have a very clear explanation of the policies as they relate to the most sensitive and identifying piece of information that any person can give up. Frankly, I am quite reticent to entrust such data to a company that could decide to sell such data if they run into a cash crunch or as an ancillary source of revenue, and I would like a clear airing of what the policies are, the recent California data privacy law notwithstanding. If it were not for the complete lack of variety from the prescription eyewear industry as regards the size of frames, the potential privacy issues would have completely dissuaded me from trying this

Now getting my second pair!

Topology is the one and ONLY place I have been able to fit my odd sized face and head. I have been to hundreds of local places and tried all the “we’ll send you frames in the mail” places and ONLY Topology has been able to get me glasses that fit my face. We went through FIVE mockup versions because of my long eyelashes and other adjustments. When I was happy with the fifth mockup they made the final pair and sent it to me. After doing a normal adjustment around the ears I had the perfect fitting frame, made just for me. Now, a year and a half later I am looking for a slightly different style and I will use my HSA to buy a new pair of Topology frames.

Read this.

I want to start by saying that I highly recommend 3DFaceScan. I found this company online because I typed into Google “I don’t like how I look in glasses.” And this company popped up. When I read that they had an app that would let me virtually try them on, I figured it wouldn’t work well. So I went to 3DFaceScan Store and read the reviews. I was worried about some of the negative ones but downloaded it anyway.
I have to say- I can’t understand how anyone would leave one bad review. It’s clearly user error if you can’t get the selfie part to work, which is no reason to leave a negative review. And the other negative review I read wasn’t even about 3DFaceScan itself.
I’m very impressed and was happy to be given so many neat options.
Thank you for creating this :)

pretty slick app

I haven’t actually bought glasses using 3DFaceScan , but the way 3DFaceScan let you preview glasses on your face is pretty neat, because your can swipe your virtual head left and right and the virtual glasses follow accurately. It really looks like you are wearing them. It works far better than the websites where you upload a selfie and it superimposes the glasses on you. It also has a neat feature where you can adjust them wider/narrower and taller/shorter. The suggested width and height looked dead on for me; it’s good to try the extremes because you can see what will look clownish so you know what to avoid (sometimes you need to see some really horrible ones to feel better about the ones you can’t decide between). Hopefully they can add more frame styles in the future, but this does give you a pretty decent idea of what looks good or not.

Yes, it fits! Asian fit even!

So I’m not the most technically gifted but I used 3DFaceScan just fine. I saw frame selections, colors choices, adjust frame width and height. Taking the picture wasn’t hard at all and they even saw that one ear sits slightly higher than the other. Then after my selection arrived, I was able to tell them to fix the tilt, the width, the height and so on. The second (corrected) pair arrived and I haven’t taken it off since! Been using them for 4 months and the quality is great. Super comfortable and attractive glasses to wear. And considering price, it’s not much more than a good pair at a chain store. Will order again!

Highly recommended

While standard eyeglasses generally fit me well, I was interested in trying Topology glasses. I am very happy that I did! The glasses fit well and look equal or better than other luxury eyeglasses that I’ve tried on or owned. You are getting that quality (e.g., Italian Acetate) for less money, at least compared to other glasses I had been looking at. The custom fitting and design is a bonus. This is why I would recommend Topology.

As far as process, I was pretty pleased. It was unclear to me how perfect your face scan needed to be, and so I rescanned three times to ensure it was a good scan. I positioned my phone and arms on a counter and kneeled to minimize movement during the scan - I think this worked well. As far as frames and colors, the rendering gives you some perspective, but the photographs were really helpful in understanding the actual design details and true colors of the frames. From the time I ordered to receiving my glasses, it took 13 days.

If I have any critiques, it is that they have a limited number of frame choices at this point. That said, there still is a good amount of variety, and the multitude of color choices greatly help. Ultimately, I am very pleased with my choice because the color I selected helped compensate for some some frame design details I was unsure of.

Hope this is helpful to those looking for a new pair of high-end glasses!

Control freak!!

If you're a control freak like me, you'll love Topology eyewear. I had a fun time designing my own glasses. I had over $500 left in my flex health spending account so I wanted a high quality pair of frames. Topology fell in to my lap as a Instagram add and their platform caught my eye. I downloaded 3DFaceScan and designed my frames. It was super fun and coming from San Francisco, I knew the glasses were going to be high quality. The whole process was fun and not a headache like going to a store and trying on a plethora of germy frames only to choose something that's sorta okay. You design the frames to a 3-D model of your own face, Id wish I had more on my flex health card, I'd love to design 5 more pairs. The best part is how light weight the frames are. I now don't get pressure headaches anymore, like I did with my $99 frames because they are so heavy. You get what you pay for and my Topology glasses are high quality.

Wow. Seeing is believing

Wow super impressed. I’ve never had a frame that fit right out of the box, nor one so comfortable. And I think these are the best lenses I’ve ever had - and I’ve been wearing glasses for over 20 years and have lost count on how many pairs I’ve had in the past. Won’t ever buy glasses any other way. Sure it took a bit longer than that crap you can get in an hour, but the wait really wasn’t too bad, and man do you get what you pay for, and then some. Already thinking about what I want to order next from these guys! Maybe some sunnies, or one of their metal ones? Too many choices...

Highly recommend

It took me a while before making the jump, but I ended up ordering sunglasses as a trial before going for my normal prescription glasses. There were some processing snafus where I had to retake my calibration video a few times, but I was so pleasantly surprised when I received them how light and perfect they were. I have Asian features with a flat nose bridge so every pair of glasses I've had either didn't fit my face width or my nose bridge. These did the trick right out of the box and I'm so impressed. Definitely worth the hassle of going through the steps to get a pair that feels like "you".

Can’t recommend enough

I cannot say enough about the amazing customer service I experienced with Topology. I was very pleasantly surprised at the lengths they went to in order to ensure that I received the best purchasing experience ever.

Not only did I receive great service but the end product was the best fitting pair of glasses that I have ever owned. I do not hesitate in giving them a five star rating and my unqualified recommendation. In fact after purchasing a pair of glasses I returned to purchase a pair of sunglasses.

Keep up the great work and I will be sending friends and family to Topology for future glasses.

Exceptional fitting experience

I came to Topology with the goal of finding the perfect pair of sunglasses to suit my multifaceted lifestyle. 3DFaceScan provides simplicity of use and has a wide variety of frames to choose from and further customize. I throughly enjoyed the camera experience, where I had the opportunity to try on the frames and could see the frame from many angles. Reviewing the photos of the frames and colors worn by other people was also helpful. Looking forward to kicking off summer with some awesome, eye-catching, customized Topology frames!

5 star product and experience

Would give more stars if possible! The experience end to end was seamless, and the end result is a perfectly fitting, high quality, and stylish frame. These glasses grab attention, clearly custom made, and are worth every penny. All glasses I have owned previously fell down my nose, were slanted, and much more flimsy; I will not buy from anywhere else! The support team is also responsive, genuine, and incredibly helpful. They have earned a loyal fan for life.

Glasses that fit at last

I’ve never been able to wear glasses that didn’t have pads that lifted the glasses off my nose. That always meant choosing wire frame or metal styles which was restricting. I was never able to wear thicker acetate styles...until now. The face mapping really does work. The glasses stay on my nose bridge all day and fit flawlessly. The technology is real and it very much does work. You can basically get a bespoke pair of glasses by scanning your face with your phone. It’s brilliant.

Great glasses!

Best pair of glasses I’ve ever owned. Better fit than my Oakley Asian-fit sunglasses. Lightweight, with very thin lenses for my heavy prescription, it stays on my face perfectly. Better than the many pairs I have owned in the past (and I’m 64).

3DFaceScan was pretty easy to use. The wait to finally receive the glasses was pretty long but totally worth it. Expensive? Maybe but I’ve spent more in the past with less satisfaction.

Asians should give this a try! IMHO.

Repeat customer, LOVE this company!

I struggled for years to be able to read...my eye doctor tried everything...turns out it was just ill-fitting frames. I am SO thankful for Topology’s product AND for their amazing customer service. They really will redo it until it is right, and they will promptly and cheerfully answer a thousand questions for you. Topology earns every penny and I will be their customer for
life!
