Needs a better workout builder and connected planner

Reading that Tempo had the capability to build WorkoutKit running workouts and a planner sounded appealing to me. Upon closer use of both tools, they fall flat.

The workout builder works with the standard set of WorkoutKit rules. However, it arbitrarily limits maximum power alerts to 240W. While building up interval workouts, each interval takes a number of inputs. If a mistake is made in entering data in an interval there is not a way to edit it. One must delete and re-enter the interval details again.

If you manage to successfully enter a long and complex interval workout and want to modify one thing about it, you’re out of luck. Delete and start the tedious task of selecting and entering all the values again.

Assuming you get workouts built to your liking, the next step is to plan them out. The workout planner is a glorified CSV. You pull out a separate spreadsheet and fill in the weeks long details using the provided syntax. Once imported in Tempo , it displays the information back at you. It makes no connection between the plan and the workouts built within Tempo . This is a large gap in functionality.

Tempo looks interesting for looking at personal running stats, but needs a bunch more work to get the workouts and planner in a workable and symbiotic way.

A Deeper Look Into Your Run Data

Tempo does as advertised. Pretty straight forward. The data organization is plentiful and visually pleasing to look at. Minus one (1) star because if you manually add a workout, you MUST allow that workout to be written into Apple Health App. I do OrangeTheory Fitness. Tempo will not include the run data from OrangeTheory. So I try to manually enter the treadmill portion. However, OrangeTheory already includes my workout as HIIT workout in Apple Activities/Health. Tempo will duplicate the entry. There is no way within Tempo to refuse data to be written.

Best running app with room for improvement

this app is the best running app companion. My quest is finally over. This one seriously is for real runners: no fuss, minimalistic UI, useful data upfront, cool tagging and filtering tools, and an excellent log scheme. There is a large room for improvement, though. First and foremost, a record tab to check the personal bests. Secondly, the option to entitle the logged run (i.e., NYC Marathon, Boston Marathon, and so on). Thirdly, the option to add a link to the race or location where the run took place. Keep it up, developer. You're one of the rest of us!

Super

I just loaded Tempo and I really like the statistics that it provides. One thing I wish I could add to it as other activities such as cycling. I also spent a lot of time on an elliptical machine. The heart rate data and activity data from these indoor or outdoor endeavors is captured in my Health app, so adding those activities to this app would just require additional data crunching, similar to what is already being done for walking and hiking. And this way I would capture all of my activities during the week. I ride my bike 80 miles or so every week and I probably spent two or three hours on an elliptical in zone four or zone five, so that’s useful data to add for the intensity for the week

Splits are broken, devs unresponsive

I like the idea of Tempo. I was really enjoying using it for a while until my new entries suddenly had broken splits. There would only be 2 splits for a run. The 1st mile and then the rest of the run would be lumped together as one big split. Completely useless data at that point. The splits are correct in the data source and correct in Apple Fitness, only in this app are they broken. I reached out to the devs at their published support email and got no response. I had paid for a year of premium but I cancelled after realizing the data is suspect and the devs won't troubleshoot issues. I would look very carefully before spending any money and ensure that the data is correct for your workouts.

update: after tweeting at the developer I did receive a response. The developer tried hard to solve the problem but unfortunately a solution was never found. I really wish I could use Tempo as I quite like it, but I just can't get around this issue.

Well worth the subscription cost! I'm impressed 🤓

First, I will mention the subscription part because it seems like that is where a lot of people are leaving negative reviews. Yes, you do need to pay the subscription fee to see all of the functions, charts, goalsetting, widgets, etc. within Tempo but the creator gives you a seven day trial to see what it has before you have to pay for it. I’d also like to mention the fact that I tried to download a lot of Apple health data to generate a spreadsheet to analyze my runs and suffice to say I spent 2+ days trying to get a handle on all of the data, and in the end excel was not really able to process several gigabytes of data. Tempo connects directly to Apple health and gives you all of the run data and statistics that you could possibly imagine so fantastic work on the creators part. Thank you for making a wonderful app.

Great running app

The last thing you want is an app that’s going to tie you up even before you get your foot out of the door. this app is clean and a amazing user friendly app. There are 2 versions - Free and a Premium. My favorite feature is the Dashboard where you get a simple view of weekly, monthly and yearly runs. In addition you can view your intensity trend in a monthly calendar feature. Tap on each run and you get to the details. I run 6 days a week and for me I cannot get a better and simple app than this app. Thank you!

Perfect running log app

I’ve used this app for a few years now and love it. It syncs with my smart watch automatically, and keeps track of an amazing variety of data - route maps, distance, speed, cadence, heart rate, totals by week month year etc. if the watch hiccups it’s easy to correct the recorded data by hand. There is literally nothing about Tempo I do not like, and I am fairly picky. Fantastic piece of software, at a very reasonable price.

Fantastic app; like a local smashrun

Tempo is really great for seeing cumulative runs and trends. It reminds me a lot of smashrun or Strava in that regard. What would make it even better would be to include a biking section and maybe a section that shows your most recent run stacked against previous runs of the same distance so you can get an idea for how it’s immediately trending. Definitely worth the fee for Tempo. It’s also immensely cheaper than all other subscription running apps.

Perfect. Just perfect.

For a recreational runner like myself this app is exactly what I wanted. It fills in all the gaps left by Apple’s own Health and Fitness apps. While I primarily use it to set monthly goals and see my distances run during set periods (ie, Last 365 Days, Last 30 Days), it also gives so much more data that I simply haven’t even begun to analyze or understand (yet).

An amazing app that feels very Apple-ish (in terms of UI/UX design) and for $10 a year I don’t see how anyone can complain!

Amazing!

I simply can't believe how great Tempo is! It shows 100x more than the native apps show for the very same training! It's mind blowing.
Now, why not take it a step or two further and include much more data from the Health app?
I'm desperately looking for Garmin Connect replacement and Tempo best I've found so far!
With added info, like sleep, pulse, weight and all those metrics, it would be Tempo for people like me - trying to switch from Garmin Connect to Apple Health.

Perfect Complement to Apple Watch

I recently switched from running with a Garmin to running with an Apple Watch. I really like the watch but the data views available in the Activity and Health apps are insufficient for tracking your training. I’m so happy to have found this app because it fills in the gaps and allows you to see mileage and intensity trends over time (weekly, monthly, yearly, and rolling totals). I do a lot of treadmill runs so I also love the option to manually adjust the distance - I think it’s worth upgrading to the paid version for this feature alone.

Super helpful for reviewing & planning training

There is a lot of detailed functionality for making the most of my running data. I like being able to compare trends, and it is all helpful for planning my training. There’s great options for choosing what types of activities to prioritize. Also appreciate being able to see a variety of interesting data easily for each workout and compare data from different workouts

Best running log…

This is far and away the best running log in the AppStore. Designed to work with data collected by an Apple Watch, it also works with Garmin data exported to Apple Health.

It is one of the few apps to chart mileage and pace for every day, week, month, and year for which data is available. User defined tags make it easy to track shoes, courses, type of run, etc.

Don’t run with a phone or smart watch? No problem! Simply enter each run manually and still get the best graphs and charts in the AppStore.

Helps me become better

I downloaded Tempo thinking it would track runs in real time, like some other tracker apps. It does not. However, it takes all my run workouts and puts it into easy to read data. So now I just use my Apple Watch to track my runs and then go back and review my data. I’ve been able to figure out my areas of weakness. Now I can focus on those areas during my runs and in other workouts to improve those areas. I subscribed to the pro (I rarely subscribe to apps) because I think it’s that good.

The best running app

I’ve been running everyday for over three years. I found Tempo when I first got an Apple Watch a couple years ago and loved it, but I decided I wanted a more “pro” sports watch and switched to Garmin so I stopped using this app for about 8 months. Garmin watches are good and their app is fine, but it honestly does not compare to what this app does. I recently came back to the Apple Watch and using this app and this is by far a superior app to anything I’ve ever used. I’m so impressed with the developer, they clearly understand the data that runners want and need. The subscription is ridiculously cheap for all the functionality you get. The only thing that would make Tempo better is if you could export a gpx file. Otherwise, it’s perfect.

This is EXACTLY what a runner needs!

So many fitness apps aim to appeal to many different disciplines and fall short at providing really great, running focused data. this app not only collects data from all of your workout apps through Apple Health, but it leverages it to help you better manage all of your progress!

You can set goals, see PRs, and manage volume all from Tempo! Apps like Strava do similar things but don’t play well with others AND aren’t built with a running first mindset. this app has it all! I found it about a month ago, and I’ll be a premium subscriber for life!

One random bit: the Tags feature is extremely powerful. I’m using it to track the amount of mileage on specific shoes and to see how many miles I’ve trained for a specific event. So simple, but so great!

It just gets better all the time!

I’ve been using this app Pro for many years and the updates amaze and inspire me.
Would love it if it would calculate total elevation gain as Tempo I use during runs and hikes doesn’t send that info to Apple Health. I can always add it in notes from the other behemoth running app; but having it on the first page would be fun. A feature for then graphing total elevation and seeing time instead of distance in the cumulative graph would be cool too. Maybe surprise me with those updates?
Love the update that lets me graph similar runs depending on how I tag them. Trail runs, pavement, usual route, low heart rate, etc. My favorite app for seeing what I’ve done and what I’m doing now. The update of the colors and layout is a work of art! First place I look after a run.

Simple and powerful

I’ve used many running apps. Since finding this app I rarely use the others. It has a very simple user interface and you can quickly find what you’re looking for. I love the Intensity Calendar for a quick overview of my runs. The Cumulative Graph is the perfect way to look at your weekly mileage and see your progression throughout your training cycle. The Personal Bests is fun to look through. I also like how the data is presented as you review each workout. The developer is doing a great job with Tempo and is constantly adding new features. I also love that I can use the default Apple Workouts app (though you can use any app that syncs with Apple Health) to record my runs as I find that the most accurate and simplest to use. The data syncs seamlessly with this app. Great app!

Best running app so far! Goodbye Strava

A refreshing take on what a running app should be like. Clearly designed by a runner for runners.

Great work so far, can’t wait for new features and developments in the future!

Reviewed because I’m tired of running apps collecting multitudes of data from workouts but lacking the basic features to show you. Strava, for example, accepts/collects cadence data, but doesn’t show you on the iOS app…
