4.1 out of 5
Unusable

Crashes when trying to open a simple html or css file, no matter the size. Seemingly abandoned. Always makes me sad when good looking software gets left behind. One could however argue that it's our excessive rate of evolution in technology, which makes it soo difficult to continuously keep software up to date, especially in the mobile-app field.

Abandoned by app developer

Kodex used to be quite good, at the time when it was still being actively developed, at least, it was competitive with other similar applications available for iOS/iPadOS.

However, the developer has not pushed out any updates to Kodex in over 2 years now, which is basically a lifetime in the world of Kodex Store where things move even quicker than the regular software world. I wish Apple would do more to notify people of the status of Kodex …something like a highlighted block of bolded text that says “Note: This application has not been updated in (X amount of time) and we have received a number of complaints from users regarding bugs/broken features.”, there’s way too much stuff like this on Kodex Store. Oh well.

Ongoing Stability Issues

To provide as much system information as possible, these experiences are from a user using a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 with a Bluetooth keyboard. The Bluetooth keyboard is a Logitech K811.

I have used this application for about 9 months exclusively via an external keyboard. I have observed some instances of crashing while holding down the backspace key, but these instances have drastically increased with iPadOS. Either much less time holding down the backspace key is needed for a crash or some other keystroke-related action is causing a crash. Beyond that, this is a very intuitive editor which has the syntaxes, character formatting, etc. for my needs, and a lot of the features have transitioned successfully to iPadOS.

File extension/types

Kodex is full of potential. However, it has one major flaw.

I tried editing a .tex file — great, it can do that. But my Tex compiler has .aux, .log and various other files in the same directory with the same name but a different extension.

Kodex fails to show the file extensions. So I would have 5 different “file1” in a folder, but I can’t see the extension until I try to open the file and fail like 4 times. Really takes the fun out of using Kodex, so I just deleted it.

Trouble getting started

I created a file within this app and could not open it. App would crash every time. After a while I opened an existing file and it worked fine. And the this app file also opened. Weird bug. I wasn’t impressed with getting started, but I haven’t had much chance to really use Kodex .

Almost perfect

Needs optimizing for 3rd gen iPad Pro models. I’d also like to see the interface tweaked to save space: disable the iOS status bar similar to Buffer Editor, tabs in line with controls, toggle for app status bar on bottom, and the ability to hide the extended keyboard row which is nearly useless when using a hardware keyboard. Love the mini map though!

there’s no IDE

I like this app for coding,
but to make it even better
add in an IDE and interpreters
that you can turn on and off.

Bug

I was closing tabs, before the pop-up came, I closed, then tried again, then it crashed! I tried to go to coding, then it repetitively crashed + I was on iPad 15.0! Please fix!

Works great but needs improvements

Gets the job done but I’d suggest the following features:

- view only mode or prevent keyboard from coming up every time you get to a file. It’s annoying when I need to quickly jump back and forth around files.
- also allow you to jump back to where you left off in a file.

I jump back and forth between css and html files, so it gets quite cumbersome if I have to slide down the keyboard and slide down to where I left off every time.

Crashes

Good app ordinarily but it appears the current version has a severe crashing problem that makes it barely usable.

Crashes

Such a very great easy to work with but keeps crashing would be very glad if it’s fixed

I love it (pls read)

So I love this bc I was playing Roblox and this guy was hacker and he told me and I love it how u do it so u have to have google and this app and u copy and paste it on to google and then u are a hacker

Im still a little bit confused but I love it TYSM for Kodex it really helps!❤️

Good night love I hope

The first few years were tough

Best IDE so far

This is the best free integrated development environment I have been able to find on Kodex Store so far. Like having sublime text on my iPhone.

Love This App!

For someone who uses Atom, it has the same feel to it. It’s easy to use, and file handling is marvelous. Would recommend to anyone.

Well thought out app

It takes advantage of so many capabilities of the iPad Pro - it includes QuickEdit mode, so even in the Files app, you get an action to open a window on a file. Really neat that it is well integrated. Lots of syntax highlighting options.

It is able to access anything in the file system of the iPad. Other apps are not always able to do that. This also means if those plugins to the file system are flaky (Google Drive?) don’t blame Kodex . Möbius Sync syncing a Google Drive folder from your laptop is more reliable than Google’s own app.

I also was at first surprised at the seeming lack of search and replace, until I realized you must hold down Ctrl while clicking the search button, and then the Search & Replace shows up!

I really like it but

I actually really like this but I have no idea how to make an actual webpage. Even just a page that says like hi. If I could get help that would be appreciated

Just one thing to add

Please add a spot where we can tip you for Kodex . This is a wonderful app and I would like to at least give something for the hard work.

Like Notepad++ for iOS

Was hoping to find some simple editor to look at some HDL source files and came across Kodex. Have only used it for a short time but I’m pretty impressed!

Very Impressive

This is a great, no nonsense text editor for the iPad. I use it with a Bluetooth keyboard which makes text entry fast and efficient. This is my go to for taking notes etc in meetings.

Wonderful to see the support for syntax highlighting. Especially good that Markdown is covered.

Beyond Excellent

This application is great! Both as a tool and a showcase of the features and capabilities a tool can have.

What an excellent gift that the developer has made it available for free, especially with it being such high quality! Thank you very much!

Amazing app

Absolutely loved Kodex . Have a few suggestions for improvements. It will be nice to have a view only mode and disable the keyboard. Also please bring full screen mode. Finally the ability to click on a function and Kodex gives the definition or hints would make Kodex a killer!

This app is incredible!

The description accurate and Kodex looks to be exactly what the iPad needs. This is essentially Sublime Text for iPad with all of the key fix-ins right down to editing Key Bindings. After about a minute of setup I felt like I was at my desktop. Really excellent job and kudos to the developer.

I’ll be digging into this more in order to allow easier coding workflow on the go for all of my projects and come back to update this review when I’ve had a thorough look through the file features.

Seems broken on iPadOS 17.x

I love Kodex. It’s the best text editor I’ve found or iOS / iPadOS. Unfortunately, it seems broken on the latest iPadOS 17.x. I went ahead and tipped and I hope the dev will be able to fix it.
