I arrived in India on January 9th 2023- my first trip was to SBI -65 St Mark’s Road B’lore to withdraw money for my nephew’s wedding. After being there for 4 hours I was seen by Ms Aiyshwaria who gave me forms to fill and stated that if I wanted to withdraw money I had to convert my account to an NRO account. She stated categorically, that the ATM card, cheque book and passbook would be mailed in three days. I kept calling the toll free number to resolve this issue- since more than 2 weeks had elapsed. Finally, I got the said items in the 3rd week in the mail. I went to SBI in the Rajakunte branch and the bank manager Rajani tried very hard to withdraw the money for me- the cashier said that the signature hadn’t been uploaded; the mobile number was registered, but could not be used as it was a US number! Finally, on Jan 31st the last day of my departure, I went back to SBI on 65 St. Mark’s Place, and told Ms Revathy what had happened; she went across to the cashier Ms Praveena and withdrew 1 lakh in 500’s and gave it to me- though they didn’t follow the protocol of using the machine to count the money in front of me! I saw that the money wasn’t a tight wad - but I couldn’t count it there. When I went home, I counted the money and it was Rs 96000/- I don’t mean to ruin anyone’s reputation- but the hassle, the time, the disorganization just to withdraw my own money for a vacation in my Motherland- made it a very unpalatable experience! I think SBI can do better than that! Ms Vipul Ponappa
