This app causes more stress - poor people aren’t allowed to have therapy!

by Amayax
It is absolutely ridiculous and downright counterproductive to charge anybody to use Clarity. After a particularly bad day I found Clarity to be particularly hopeful; I downloaded it and was immediately disappointed by the paywall. I understand that some features are free, but to tout Clarity as an accessible way to engage in CBT and then charge you for 100% access just misses the point. Are the developers actually here to help people, or are they just looking to make $$$? Turns out this is just another app that punishes poor people and doesn’t give them as much access to therapy because who cares about the mental health of those who don’t have money, right?
Sad/Disappointed

I downloaded this because it SPECIFICALLY says the core uses of Clarity are free. I just got it and it asked a few questions before saying I have to pay to use it. And I agree with others that have mentioned it’s a steep price for a good portion of the people that would need it. And not allowing a monthly payment means way way more people will not be able to use it. I downloaded this because my stress level is high and triggering very bad thoughts, and a lot of the stress is because I am poor, because I don’t always know if I will have something to eat that day or if I will go to sleep hungry. Maybe just be more transparent that this is a paid app, (because a 7 day trial is useless) and then only people that know they can afford it would download it for use. Please don’t bait and switch people that suffer mental illness or dangle the idea that maybe for once someone like me might get *a little* help. It’s actually pretty cruel.

You have to pay to do almost everything. $60 a year too. I’ve had a hard time and won’t be able to see my therapist for a while, so I downloaded Clarity in hopes it could help me. It helped for a bit, until every recommended thing was locked and there was basically nothing I could do. Clarity itself is alright, but it would be much better if people could express their feelings and get help without having to pay. The amount is absurd, not to mention that it’s a yearly payment. I’d be willing to pay maybe $5-$20 once, not a repeated payment. Clarity has a lot of potential, you really just need to lower the price and make it a one time payment. There’s a lot of people out there who need something like this but can’t afford therapy, let alone this. Very unhappy with the experience and will definitely be uninstalling.

Self-therapy is important too and Clarity helps to make that statement a reality. It’s a shame more people don’t know about CBT and how many of us are unaware how it can help us out of suffering and raise us from the deep pits of ANTs. So if your one of the people that have gained insight to what it is and how to use it to heal your mind, body, and soul, GET Clarity. I downloaded Clarity when I was on a verge of a breakdown. My therapist was not available but her notes were and in them I saw “CBT,” did a little more research and stumbled upon Clarity and my life has been steadily improving. I’m able to notice what triggers terrible moods and what makes me feel good or bad. I can easily write my negative thoughts down and confront them in Clarity with easy to understand definitions of the types of negative connotations that have been paralyzing me. After using it awhile I have been able to utilize the practices of Clarity in real time, and identify exactly what negative cognitive behaviors are trying to take over. My brain, my body, and my soul has improved dramatically because of Clarity. It’s not a fix it all, let everything be gone type of thing, but it is a VERY VERY POWERFUL TOOL. It’s worth the money as well! I feel fortunate that I get to track my life and see what is causing me misery for such a low cost. Clarity is amazing and I only gave it four stars, because Clarity can only get better even though it’s already really great.
Clarity is exactly what I need to help me develop good thinking habit and stay positive in my life! I also recommended it to my therapist hoping this can help others.
However I don’t feel right about how the dev prices it. Of course you don’t have to pay for it; the free version has all the basic functionalities for your CBT record, but it happens that I need to share my thought entries with my therapist, which is locked until you pay. You need to pay almost 40 bucks a year for the record export, and this is kinda ridiculous.
I would rather pay upfront for one time cost and that’s it. I hope the dev can reconsider how they charge users for Clarity. It’s a solid app, and I would like to support a solid developer who really cares about mental health. But so far the pricing is not quite right.

Hello, I decided to work on myself in late 2021. After being inside for so long because of COVID, I discovered a lot of personal flaws and behaviors that I didn’t consider healthy. I did a month of online therapy that helped considerably, but being unemployed, it wasn’t sustainable.
I wouldn’t say Clarity is a replacement for therapy. But it has helped me think critically about my feelings in a similar way. You will have to do a lot of the brainwork to understand your problems. And you will have to come up with your own solutions as well.
The prompts do get kinda samey. Especially on days that might not be so eventful. So it might seem like you’re typing to a wall with preset responses. I wouldn’t really journal every day.
A great thought journal sidekick

I enjoy having Clarity handy to note changes and mood and thoughts. I also find the recommended exercises and learnings helpful in dealing with thoughts or things I might be struggling with.
I do wish that there were more ways to view the insight data and that I was able to retrospectively add entries for previous days. Also, I do notice that the recommended exercises seem to be rather static, that may be on purpose and helpful, however I think it would be helpful for Clarity to say that as opposed to me guessing if Clarity is guessing.

I found Thought Diary through the recommendation of a crisis support counselor. We had just discussed CBT and they pointed to Clarity as a possible tool for learning more and for practice. I love it. It's a simple as choosing a smiley appropriate to your mood or as deep as identifying and challenging distorted thinking. It's simple to export your notes if you keep a separate digital journal. The reminders on Clarity are great, they even work with Apple Watch. I love the cross-platform functionality. Great job here. I like Clarity a lot.
Impressive Customer Service/Response Time

I had initially rated this as 1 star but I am here to update it to 5 because of the incredible customer service/response time regarding my issue. I sent an email to report the bug and they (a founder, no less!) quickly responded to my concerns. While my data lost was not recovered (and I’m not entirely sure this wasn’t user error), they made the proper steps to update Clarity so it’s less likely to happen again.
Looking forward to using Clarity a bit more, and knowing this developer is ready, eager to address all issues to make Clarity work in the best way possible. kudos!
Original post: Post-dated entires disappear with no warning
New to app, so still getting to know it. However, don’t try to post-date a journal entry! I wrote my best journal entry to date around midnight and post dated it to hit the previous day. I followed the prompts as usual to the end. Went to go find it today to find IT DISAPPEARED. It doesn’t show up in my history, and I wasn’t prompted the journal entry wouldn’t be saved. Was able to reproduce this issue by selecting an earlier time than the current time. Please fix this, I am very disappointed I lost my work, both written and the self-work/reflection I intended to make with this last entry. 😢
I have recommended Clarity to everyone I know, only good can come out of using Clarity! The amount of information that is given in response to an issue is far more than any counseling sessions I’ve been to. I’m not saying to bypass any professional help, but this is an AMAZING opportunity to have everything you could possibly need to learn our behaviors good and not so good and how we can fix them. Good luck! This is a mental goldmine! Great job creating this tool for us to use during this hard COVID-19 epidemic. God bless and Jesus loves us all🥰

I really don’t write reviews, but Clarity has been supplemental for therapy, as I can’t afford to go as often as I’d like. If you think that your thought life could use some help- if you could use a sounding board for the thoughts that pop up that aren’t helpful- if you’ve ever or never tried CBT- please research it. Please give this a chance. Even in the limited mode it is so so helpful. The full mode is great but you probably don’t need it. And if you do, it’s a steal compared to the cost of just 1 therapy session. Highly recommend.
CBT at my own pace

I've used a few different mindfulness apps now. What works best for me is to organize my thoughts, find where my thinking is distorted by ingrained emotions & fears, and work out new ways of thinking about things. Sometimes meditation is nice but sometimes I'm too upset to meditate. Sometimes positive affirmations from Clarity are nice, but other times they just make me mad. What I like about CBT Thought Diary so far is it doesn't tell me how to feel. It gives me space to work through my emotions while providing avenues to know what to look for.

I never feel the need to write reviews, but right now I think I need to. I have only been using Clarity for a day, and can tell that this will be my safe place to spill my thoughts down feeing and analyze what is going on. I have done CBT in the past, but it’s been hard to make it to my appointments because of my hectic and overwhelming schedule. If you are struggling with invasive thoughts, anxiety, depression, etc. you need Clarity!! I feel better after every entry, and I love the check ins that I can do throughout the day. Thank you for creating Clarity!!

Granted I have only had Clarity for a few hours but I already feel like my life has dramatically changed. Perhaps a touch overdramatic; however, Clarity really has made me feel empowered to both journal and then assess my emotions throughout the day and a really easy Lee accessed format with interesting insights and action steps. Plus I love the various tests they have I understand they’re not diagnostic but they were helpful to kind of get a baseline of what I might want to talk about with my therapist. I already texted a friend and recommended this to them. Amazing!
I appreciate the guided thinking exercises because I know my thoughts are messed up but I do not know how to challenge them on my own. Clarity won’t solve your problems but it may make you less preoccupied with nasty thoughts. I know I feel a relief when I go through an exercise and see things from another angle. I was a little worried about having to pay for Clarity , but it has been worth it. It is much cheaper than my therapy appointments, though of course, I won’t be getting rid of those anytime soon. Clarity actually is a helpful tool for talking to my counselor.

I was looking for something for myself to utilize to help me track my thoughts, mood, environment, etc instead of writing it all in a notebook or on notes in my phone. Clarity was SOOO much more than I was expecting! It’s easy to use, FULL of useful educational material and interactive journals. I especially love the pro-mindfulness parts of Clarity . The pay version is super affordable and really unlocks the fun insights I was looking for and I’d still HIGHLY recommend giving the trial version a shot because it is full of a good variety of free content to be beneficial on its own and give you an idea of if you’d use the full version!

I’m dealing with grief from losing my grandmother who raised me. I actually didn’t start really working on the emotions until recently, and she passed almost 2 years ago. I’m doing therapy, but I’ve found it SOOOO helpful to use Clarity to put my thoughts and emotions down. Just the act of writing out how I’m feeling has been very relieving. I’ve also found that the guided journals are very helpful as well. They ask questions to push you towards really looking inward to see where the emotions are coming from. I’m super thankful to the developers for creating Clarity! I really don’t know what kind of shape I’d be in if it weren’t for the mental health tools that I’ve found via Clarity Store.

I did not really think that Clarity would help me because it’s so hard for me to change the idea that all of my thoughts aren’t true. Therefore I didn’t think CBT would help me.
However, after working with Clarity for several weeks, I can see the value in it. It’s very helpful to be able to go back and think about my past entries and how it has or hasn’t changed me. Just the act of thinking about these CBT entries helps me see destructive patterns.
I like the way that you can search under different categories, search by mood, etc. I originally thought there was a flaw in the search function, but after contacting them, they fixed the problem! So they do listen to feedback.
Truth vs. Lies

I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety for years. I found out about Clarity from a therapist, and over time it became a transforming lifestyle when I invested my time into it. Thoughts can be so convincing and seem true and emotions can be so controlling. Clarity opened my eyes to what was really going on so I could be in control of my thoughts and not the other way around! I have combined Clarity with therapy and medication and after years of challenges and growth I can see how far I’ve come from previous entries that I can look back on. Now I can also point out when the same cognitive distortions that affect me, come out in what other people say in conversations. It looks like A LOT of people could use this from what I can tell with recent events happening.
So far this is the best CBT/journaling app I’ve used. I’m a health professional who has been in CBT therapy myself for about 4.5 years - I definitely think this team put together an impressive app. One of the things that really sets this apart is the array of feelings provided and prompts. I feel like most apps have 7-9 very straightforward feelings that fail to capture emotions outside of the general “happy” “sad” “angry” etc. This feature and the aided prompts for journaling make it easier to streamline thoughts, more effectively document feelings, and not feel overwhelmed by writing an entry.
Disappointed

I used Clarity in the past. I recently reinstalled it and found to my disappointment many of the features I found useful are now locked behind a subscription wall (password protection, emotion customization, and other customization features). Clarity is no longer useful to me. I understand paying for specialized analysis tools and features, but not allowing customizations or password protection of highly personal thoughts, is a sign of greed, and not a desire to provide a tool to help those that need it. Clarity is nice, But pencil and paper work just as good.

I really like Clarity . Im at the end of my 7 day free trial and want to pay for a year....but I can’t get Clarity to sync between my iPhone and iPad. I tried restoring from my iPhone from my iPad ( where I set up the free trial) and it’s not restoring or auto syncing.I I have both set up for auto syncing to the cloud, but my iPhone won’t sync with my iPad.

I really enjoy Clarity. I love that it makes me more conscious of my thought patterns. You can tell it’s been really well thought out. The only suggestion I have would be to include a calendar view of the diary so you can see your moods laid out in the context of a calendar. (It’s easier to see patterns in this format as opposed to a list. I used to use Daylio exclusively, but still use it just for the calendar view.)

Clarity is exactly what I needed. My therapist had me documenting on paper and it was a fail. I found Clarity and it’s exactly what the CBT Thought Change work I was doing on paper!
It would be extremely helpful if you could change the date that a thought happened. I’ve tried doing it and couldn’t figure it out. Sometimes I mean to document things and forget and would like to go back in the next day.
I am someone that struggles with reasoning my thoughts but I’m beginning to believe that a lot of people are. When I showed my friends & colleagues Clarity they were amazed at how quick it takes to change the way you think & how easy it is. I use this daily!!!

I just started Clarity from my counselor’s recommendation. I’ve done CBT a lot before and it always helped but I have trouble keeping up with it. Clarity helps me by seeing the possible cognitive distortions and being able to choose which one it is and work through it.
Best mood tracking app

by Aljfy
Clarity not only helps me manage my moods, it helps with perspective. With a mood disorder it can be hard to step back and look at things objectively and see patterns developing. Clarity slows me down and makes me take a look at my own emotions privately before expressing them by engaging in destructive behaviors. I like the prompt to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. And it’s great that Clarity has guides on therapeutic techniques—truly goes above and beyond.

I have been looking for an app to use with my clients to replace the paper thought records we use. I decided to take this for a spin and so far, I have been enjoying it. It’s going to be a grate tool to use with my clients. I wish there was a license for therapists to offer this to their clients and not have those clients pay the monthly price.

I started counseling recently and my counselor wanted me to try a thought log. Since a pen and paper isn’t the most easy thing to access at all times, I wanted to find something for my phone. I’ve used it quite a bit in the last couple of days. It’s easy to use and I can open it up the moment I’m feeling the need to challenge any negative thoughts.
I’ve used Thought Diary for about ten days, to help me through a period of high stress. I am finding it so helpful in articulating some overly emotional thinking and guiding me to challenge it. I have even gone back and read past entries to learn from the cycle of my thought. I appreciate Thought Diary’s prompts to come at my day from different angles, which are then compiled into discrete diary entries. A useful way to learn about myself and calm my thoughts.

When I remember to use this tool to challenge and defeat my negative moods and thinking I generally have amazing success. I can really change my experience at any given time by picking this up and applying the thought changing exercises. So many times through life I have heard the idea that it is how we view events that culminates our experience of an event and yet it seems so natural to just accept my default perspective. In fact this is the tool that can help me re-view events for a better one.
