4.3 out of 5

Ratings manipulated

2022-11-21

Leaving this 1 star review for two reasons. kumocloud is still bottom of the barrel in terms of usability considering it’s the only options for a newly installed system costing upwards of $30k (for me). Secondly, leaving 1 star because the review score is being manipulated. Most of the comments here are terribly negative, and for good reason. Read them all, they’re all true folks. But somehow kumocloud is a 4.X out of 5. It used to be 2.X out of 5 and seriously nothing is different from then to now except a different screen when you boot kumocloud . It’s obvious Mitsubishi, or some third party, is working to clean up the image of kumocloud instead of just hiring new developers to work on kumocloud . But if you’re like me, you’re stuck. kumocloud is the only thing that will control your system. So I’ll begrudgingly use it until I don’t have to.

Worst system ever

2022-12-22

We have a two zone system that is connected via kumocloud . Even though this was installed four years ago it always decides to break at the worst possible time. The day after Christmas one of the zones decided to stop showing up in kumocloud . Despite several attempts to fix it we still have no heat in that zone. The system goes into Defrost Mode when it gets really cold and that stops the flow of warm air coming in. So then it starts to cycle between defrost and normal operation which means the desired temperature is never reached. It did work for a while when the technicians realized the external unit needed more refrigerant “charge” but then when the first cold snap comes then it’s back to the cycle described above. Not to mention how sensitive it is with wifi settings and two temperature monitors constantly needing to be fiddled with. You’re better off with a manual touch thermostat than this highly unreliable system.

Stuck in 2010

2023-01-23

kumocloud is really disappointing. It’s buggy. It’s inconsistent. And it’s outdated. The functionality to have a truly smart hvac heat pump system is there, but the software developers haven’t spent the time to make it an easy or initiative experience. Updating the heating or cooling programming is like using Visual C++ from 10 or 20 years ago. kumocloud pretty much needs to be closed and restarted every time you check on it, especially if you’re not on wifi. The air exchanger functionality needs to be set and reset every day. Settings are buried with no explanations what they do. And similar systems (we have an 18k and a 24k btu ducted) behave differently even though supposedly they are the same software. Long story short: Mitsubishi built world class heat pump systems and took short cuts on the software and have failed to invest in updating it along the way. Do better.

A joke Mitsubishi that calls this software

2023-02-24

Really this is the best you can do? kumocloud errors out all the time I get crazy overlaid text that makes no sense in the application. I have to kill the application and restart it multiple times. Kind of alarming that in the 2020s Mitsubishi mini split units require an add-on Wi-Fi unit and a ghetto app that doesn’t work well. I thought Mitsubishi was some kind of technology leader. I think they could sit down and do a much better job of this it’s clear they just bought something off the shelf or strung something together but this is a joke. I definitely will not be getting Mitsubishi mini split units again until they come up with a legitimate application and Wi-Fi solution Built into their units as they should be in 2022…

Miserable app experience, never updated, poor connectivity

2023-03-25

I’ve used kumocloud over three years to control seven different Mitsubishi heat pump mini splits. At best my experience is tepid, more often kumocloud will not load, kumocloud loads with programming coding text errors across the screen, or fails to actually send the requested change in set points to the units. There are several features and functions that cannot be controlled by kumocloud , only the actual physical controls.

If you’re considering spending the money to buy the aftermarket device necessary to enable kumocloud, consider ANYTHING ELSE!! Mitsubishi has completely failed to provide quality services, updates, or useful customer service here. Would never recommend this product to a customer or friend.

Terrible reliability

2023-04-26

I have had kumo cloud for 1 year controlling a single unit. Remote access is important for the vacation house. From day one, the interface only worked on local WiFi. Offsite access via web never worked. Two months ago, lost local WiFi access. Have had 3 kumo cloud tech support calls with no success. They kept on telling me I must have PW credential misspellings which is not the case. Tried rebooting the WiFi access device, reinstalling the iPhone app ( twice). Tried access on different iPhone (nope), rebooted WiFi router multiple times, changed WiFi router PW, changed to different WiFi 2.4 ghz channel, and more things I can’t remember. Mitsubishi knows this interface is horrible. The installers tell you this and even the tech support people say the same thing. I only have one question…..why has Mitsubishi not resolved this long running (many years) problem. Great heat pump but I won’t recommend it to anyone until this is resolved

Meh

2023-05-27

It mostly works - I suppose I'd give it a 3 or 4 star review if this was an early iteration of the product but I've been using it for about 5 years now and in all that time they've done nothing to improve the thing. Connectivity is hit-or-miss... sometimes you can turn on a minisplit 3 or 4 times in kumocloud before it actually turns on and you always have to wait several minutes to see if it's worked or not. Usually when I open kumocloud for the first time after a day or two of not using it I see a bunch of random garbage text spread across the screen before it starts working properly.

Beyond the issue of reliability, it sure would be nice if they had integration with Homekit but there's been no indication of that ever happening.

Another useful feature would be the ability to have a unit placed into more than one group/category. For example, I'd love to have all my mini-splits in a single group but also have an 'almost all' group that excluded the guest bedroom that's almost always locked and unused.

Bottom line is that it feels like Mitsubishi managed to put together a bare-minimum product that allows them to check the box of 'control via app' and haven't done anything since it was released to make it more usable or user-friendly.

Good 50% of the time.

2023-06-28

I’m hoping that upgrades come along that help the reliability of kumocloud because when it’s working right it does exactly as I want. We have ductless heating and cooling systems in two different buildings on our property so both my wife and I have kumocloud and can control for our own separate needs. About 50% of the time kumocloud tells us to wait a few minutes or call the installer. I have reliable WiFi extenders and no issues with other apps so I know it is specifically related to kumocloud. I’m hoping this gets read and acted on because as is it is better than nothing but has room for improvement.

Confusing Interface with Limited Schedule Control

2023-07-29

Interface is confusing and there is no apparent in app help prompts or contextual explanation of controls. Some items that need to be addressed by the developers:
— In auto mode for a zone it is unclear what the high and low temperatures are used for. Is the upper temperature the cooling set point and the lower temperature the heating set point, or is this the “deadband” of the zone?
— Schedules need to provide to set the range of set points mentioned in the previous bullet. Currently from my experience kumocloud only allows control of the cooling setpoint.
— App needs to allow for multiple schedules based on season as well as weekend / weekday, or night/day.
— Schedules need to be set for heads on the same zone independently to allow user to prevent units within an zone from going into standby.

Getting better but Needs work

2023-08-30

kumocloud has definitely improved in the past year. I wish it did a better job of making it easy to connect the wireless temperature sensor and giving you more feedback when you try to connect it to the Internet. Also, it is missing the ability to control the vane which directs the airflow. Developers: please add full control of the vane and other features to kumocloud

it could also use a direct Bluetooth connection to the indoor unit. This would help people who may have lost the remote or the batteries in the remote died and still need to control it.

Much Improved UI and speed. Needs more work

2023-10-01

I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I noticed changes to kumocloud . These changes gives me hope and encouraged me to write this review. Navigation menus are improved and now are big and easy to press, I can now read the zone temp on the main menu! and there is no need to open each zone individually.

Please work on the zone navigation experience next. Menus are collapsed by default and require expansion, sometimes two expansions to reach the desired setting. There is lots of real state to streamline the experience of turning on heat or cool and setting temp and air flow settings. We should be able to manage each zone and it’s settings from the main landing page. Make each zone tule bigger and include the options there.

I also get the impression that kumocloud is designed for the iPad. Please design a specific app for the iPhone screen format.

Keep updates coming. Thanks for your work.

Primitive but functional (barely)

2023-11-01

Mitsubishi should be embarassed by kumocloud. It often shows a frozen screen of nonsense when you open it, but it works after you restart it. kumocloud allows you to adjust the heating and cooling settings, including fan speed and direction. It displays temperature in each room. Setting up a program is ridiculously clunky but it does work. Have had a few problems—for example I turned off the program and reduced the temperature while away but it seems the program kept running.
Lacks the features of Sensibo such as temperature history and humidity. Way, way less polished than Sensibo, Nest, or really any app I have used in the last 5 years.

Better, but still needs improvement

2023-12-03

I’ve had numerous challenges with my setup; wall unit, floor standing into, and pead with ductwork to rooms with returns. Connectivity issues, inability of system to follow schedule, switching out of auto to heat or cool, sensors losing connectivity, etc. thankfully, most of the major issues seem have been resolved. Thank you for that.

I still give three stars because the work has been to stabilize kumocloud , not improve, and who knows if it will remain stable. it’s also early and these issues could reappear. Let’s hope not and maybe you can now deliver better design, functionality, and send out a great app experience for us 🙏👍

Bugs or something

2024-01-03

kumocloud is very reliable and consistent with a couple small exceptions. Sometimes it’s a bit slower to connect which could be the WiFi connectivity in fairness. Occasionally through I have set the system in kumocloud (fully off or on or whole house set to a high temp) while out of town as an example. Later, when checking back or I suddenly realize, temps are set differently and much different than what I’ve set. I live alone mostly and am in a small townhouse so the possibility of kids or “not me” adjusting doesn’t exist. :-)

Does not respond every time.

2024-02-04

Kumo Cloud works fairly decent, but does not respond to every command. I have to put in my temperature or mode more than once sometimes. Also in Set Up, I was setting some fan controls and it did not keep the settings. Had to redo the settings several times to get it to change them. That is also with hitting refresh after the changes. Sometimes it does not respond to the temperatures and overheats rooms. Whether that is a Kumo Cloud issue or something with the unit itself, I am not sure.

Sometimes glitchy

2024-03-07

Overall this is a nice app. I am the facilities manager for our church. The church is an historic place, so it doesn’t have air conditioning and the heat is a boiler that is old as well. We purchased the Mitsubishi heat pump systems to take care of the air and heat for the church.
I am in charge of setting up the temperature programs for the various events that go on in the facility.
kumocloud is a good success for accomplishing this task. It works well for the most part.
Sometimes it will loose signal and that will mess up the program. I think mainly it’s our internet connection but it could also be kumocloud .
Over all I give it a 4 stars because when it’s working it is awesome and I don’t have to worry about the heat or air temperature.

Getting the most out of Kumo

2024-04-06

We have been using the Kumo cloud for 2 years. Initially I was disappointed with the running cost. It appeared I had just traded fuel oil dollars for electric dollars. A few less dollars, but a tough argument to sell to my wife expecting a significant savings. THEN I started playing with the programming. We now run the system twice a day using the program feature. One cycle early before we get up and one cycle late before retiring. During January, these two cycles total 12 hours. I adjust the run time as the weather gets warmer, eventually dropping the evening run and this morning I shut down the morning cycle too. We both can access the Kumo cloud on our phones to turn in on or off when we feel the need. The impact to our electric bill has been amazing, reducing our kilowatts demand by nearly 60%. Admittedly we need to be more proactive with turning it on and off, but the savings are significant.

Offline for over a year.. so happy to be back!

2024-05-08

I was not aware that most of these kinds of household WiFi products (ie- light switches and plugs etc) run ONLY on 2.4 ghz WiFi - NOT 5 ghz! So when we had our house WiFi changed to all 5ghz, it went out. But I didn’t put 2+2 together! Until last week when a friend pointed it out.
So we are back on line with our Mitsubishi split unit - cool and hot when I need it!

Helping to keep Mom home

2024-06-08

This Kumo Cloud Ap has given us peace of mind in knowing we can control the air conditioning and heating for Mom who lives alone and who has no short term memory and who was unknowingly sabotaging her comfort to turn the air conditioner off and the heat down for fear of cost. She now has a Mitzubishi unit that she never has to think about, which is quiet and she does not know how to control. We control it remotely. We set it and check on it at the seasonal changes that come our way. She is comfortable and we are at peace that she is in a safe / healthy temperature, inside despite the weather outside.

Kumo finally worth it!

2024-07-10

I’ve had a 4 zone ducted/ductless system for a year now and can finally say, Kumo is decent now. kumocloud is finally predictable and operates nearly flawlessly. Scheduling is a breeze and the load times are very fast compared to a year ago. Changes to temps via kumocloud seem to stick better now, whereas I used to have to make the adjustment multiple times. Would be cool to see fun stuff like compressor load which I’ve seen on Trane equipment, but otherwise I am very satisfied.

Kumo cloud is terrible

2024-11-17

I have had my Mitsubishi mini splits for 10 months. They are in a second home, so remote control is important to us.
Kumo cloud is so bad in so many ways
1 The cloud service sometimes goes down completely. It was recently down for 3 days, which prompted me to finally write this review.
2 When it works, the connection is flakey. It takes up to 30 seconds to load, and usually some of my 4 head units don’t load at all.
3 Even when they load, and I make adjustments, those adjustments don’t always sync to the unit. I turn it up or down or on or off and then check it 10 minutes later to be sure it actually happened. It works about half the time.
4 And even when everything works, the UI is just awful. Really bad. I wish that was the only problem.
5 Also, kumo requires its own dedicated wifi router, because it only works on 2.4ghz with certain password setups. Our installer provided one and I had to Ethernet it to my system.

Mitsubishi sent a note that they are serious about fixing this sad mess. But they don’t say when. They only update kumocloud once or twice a year.
If I had know how bad this is I would have gotten another brand.

Total Scam

2024-11-17

So 80% of home products come with IOT capabilities these days, even the $10 ones — from belts to hairbrushes to forks and these ridiculous things have have a better UI, functionality, reliability and customer support than something that has cost me $1K.

To upgrade each of the units so you can use your phone as a remote instead of impossibly useless remotes, you need to buy a $100 adapter. Which you then have to have installed by ah approved installer so you don’t void your warranty. So that’s $250. If you have four units, like me, that is $1K.

If it were just a matter of the crappy remotes I would have said forget it, but Dad has dementia so remotes are a no no.

Problem is the reliability and functionality don’t justify $100 much less $1K. Oh and the latest update has caused kumocloud to no longer recognize any units connected to my account. So that’s going to be an expensive service call because of course you can’t do any of the under-the-hood tinkering yourself. 🙄

Do NOT buy a Mitsubishi split system, do NOT waste your money on the Kumo Cloud upgrade. It is just a scam for Mitsubishi to rake in money for themselves and “authorized dealers.” There is absolutely no documentation for a feature that should standard on any home appliance these days.

Mitsubishi should be ashamed

2024-11-17

I read all the negative reviews, but still decided to purchase a $6000 heat pump with the express intent of connecting it to my wireless network. What a mistake. I work in IT, so I’m confident this is not user error. And this isn’t just a complaint about the UI either; kumocloud is simply not functional. Speaking on the phone with the techs is not helpful either. First, they try to blame your setup. Then they apologize but acknowledge that kumocloud is “not great” and that it doesn’t work with some modern equipment. Hours of frustration and multiple bandaid purchases later, the unit still isn’t working. To be clear, this isn’t just a negative review of kumocloud ; it is a warning to stay away from Mitsubishi equipment and the company until they figure out a way to become more modern and responsive. Fujitsu makes a similar unit that I really regret not getting.

Poor app functionality for a great AC unit

2024-11-17

The Mitsubishi units are great. Unfortunately the Kumo Cloud app is disappointing.

First, kumocloud is very clunky at startup.
When launching kumocloud , it takes quite a long time to start up and find the AC units. In fact, most times I launch kumocloud it doesn’t connect to at least one of the units. I must then manually close kumocloud and restart for it to look again and find all of the units (referred to as ‘zones’).

The user interface is pretty clunky and not very sleek. User experience could be greatly improved. However the first point I mentioned about having to kill kumocloud and relaunch is really the worst part. Seems like it’s not programmed as good as it should be. It’s not very stable at all.

I think Kumo is a bit of an embarrassment for the company. Mitsubishi really is the “Rolls Royce” of air conditioning, and I love our mini-split AC units. I wish the Kumo Cloud experience would match the same quality and design standards.

As such it’s also quite overpriced to install the needed Kumo hardware, especially for how clunky of an experience you get.

Having said that, I love that I can control the units remotely from my phone, and it’s great to be able to see the temperature of each zone. Hopefully they will improve and update kumocloud in the near future.

Former Nest users agree with these bad, bad reviews

2024-11-17

Since our Mitsubishi split system was installed last winter we have spent many, many, frustrating hours along with our installer trying to get the system to work properly. After a couple months of having the system air condition the house during the defrost cycle, while we experienced it failing to keep the house warm, the Mitsubishi technical support person finally helped change settings to remedy the error. All the problems mentioned with the Kumo Cloud software confused the problem; and continue to cause odd settings to click in and programs fail to work properly. During this time, our installer has never been told that there are known problems with Kumo Cloud. We are tired of having the Mitsubishi technical support person imply that we are making these problems up, and angry at Mitsubishi for failing to acknowledge and remedy their horrid design and program errors.

Bad design with a terrible user interface

2024-11-17

I recently had a Mitsubishi 2 zone heat pump installed and tried using the Kumo Cloud to control the system. The user interface is extremely poor which is sad because it doesn’t seem like it would take much to improve it.

The screen layout doesn’t seem to have been tested on an iPhone. The back arrows are formatted over the clock and very difficult to press. The interface lacks the normal commands that would be expected in the mode. For example: auto mode (which they tell you they don’t recommend on the phone??) sometimes has 2 temperatures appear, one for the heat and one for the airconditioning. Most times when you try to create a program using auto mode only one temperature appears. You have to switch back and forth between cooling and heating modes to set the temp then switch the program back to auto in order to see the range. When compared to some others like nest, this is very frustrating.

This thermostat seems to be designed for someone who wants to constantly/daily change the temperature settings. If you are looking to program your system or switch easily between saved programs for heat, cool, or heat cool (auto) this system definitely isn’t for you. I expected a lot more from kumocloud and am seriously disappointed.

P.S. I spoke to customer service and they were unable to resolve or explain any of these issues.

Unreliable app degrades the ownership experience

2024-11-17

Mitsubishi needs to stop apologizing here and start fixing their app and thermostat. The consistent failure to keep Kumo Cloud functional really kills the air pump ownership experience. The system is down ALL THE TIME and lasts for DAYS on end. For those of you who are unfamiliar, that means you cannot use kumocloud to control or even communicate with your heating and cooling. In fact, my Mitsubishi thermostat does not even let you access the programming of temperature directly. The only way to adjust the temperature when the system is down is to go to the thermostat and change it there. To make matters worse, the previous temperature programming will override whatever you set manually at the thermostat. That means going back to the thermostat to adjust time and time again until Kumo Cloud comes back to life again.
I won’t even get started with the lack of basic features and the difficulty in setting up initial connection. Your basic thermostat experience from last century would be far better than this so-called cloud connected solution.

Surprisingly, unbelievably bad

2024-11-17

kumocloud does a terrible injustice to Mitsubishi. The AC unit works great, kumocloud and the flimsy wifi-connector thing that is required are total trash. App freezes constantly, tells me to connect to wifi when I’m already on wifi, and small 101 things like the screen has more than enough room to display all “mode” icons at once (heat, cool, fan only, etc) yet infuriatingly you need to push a button to expose the “hidden” fan only option. Just an example that no one with a brain is involved in this.

I called my HVAC installer who said I need to keep this trash app/thermostat rather than moving to any other wifi thermostat. So that’s crushing. If my Mitsubishi system breaks I won’t be getting another - because of kumocloud.

Even more frustrating - occasionally just when you think kumocloud has been completely left for dead, a software update comes though - and for just a moment you’re hoping, pleading, that someone with greater than a high school programming course has made some improvements. But no, there is never any change, not sure what the point of the updates is.

How could Mitsubishi release such Abomination?

2024-11-17

Mitsubishi make great equipment. The mini-split system works well, is quiet and efficient. But the controller interface is from the 80s. They still expect you to use a wall mount setback thermostat with their equipment. And when you add wifi and kumo cloud to that, they don’t even work together nicely. Everything about design the UI and architect this cloud solution and the control mechanism is terrible.
I read about the negative comments date back to 2019 and thought that they must have improved it significantly by now. But no, it really is that bad. From a previous user of ecobee or nest, this is like going back to the stone ages.
Setting the expectations, if all you want is to turn on and off, or set the temperature remotely, this may work for you if you don’t mind the flaky connection (reporting errors more often than not). If you are coming from a smart thermostat like ecobee or nest, this will be so shockingly bad that you would question whether you have made a mistake in purchasing a Mitsubishi system.
My advice to Mitsubishi, please think carefully about the user experience. You may have the best equipment out there, but if your user interface is as bad as the kumo cloud, you are really doing a big disservice to yourself. May be you can consider licensing or work with ecobee to come up with a package solution that work with air handler and ductless head units.

Mitsubishi obviously doesn’t give a crap

2024-11-17

I’ve read the other reviews here, and I have nothing substantive to add. I have encountered the same feeling of rage at paying to upgrade to something that’s more or less useless. It does turn the heat on and off and it does adjust the temperature SOMETIMES. Which is… bad.
If like me you’d already bought this before reading the reviews, this glitchy flaky app is not 100% worthless. I use it to turn up the temperature before I arrive at the secondary home where the units are located. But it usually takes more than one attempt to do this successfully. Mitsubishi obviously knows that people have already spent the money before they make it to kumocloud review page, but you would think they would at least be embarrassed to have a one star app. We’ll see.

Kumo Cloud credentials issue

2024-11-17

I have updated my router wifi password and when trying to connect all my adapters to Kumo Cloud with new password, I am getting message “There was an error communicating with the adapter. Please ensure that your WIFI credentials are correct and try again”. I can ensure my credentials are correct and tried on multiple different adapters for mini splits and still does not connect. Please Fix ASAP. Update: I went to even buy another router and still cannot connect. Mitsubishi / Kumo Cloud needs to be exposed for this nonsense. $600 in wifi adapters and still does not work.

2nd update: Kumo Cloud has been finally fixed to allow connection to router. Updating to 2 Stars, could be higher rating (4) as kumocloud needs updating their interface and how Kumo Cloud would allow mesh router connection on same SSID for 2.4 and 5 ghz.

Bad UI, flaky controls

2024-11-17

Do kumocloud developers test on IoS? Because the control buttons (“back, etc) literally overlap the Iphone search button, so half the time you attempt to select a Kumo control button, you select the IoS search function, which closes kumocloud screen. Terrible design which is presumably easy to fix, but has never been fixed. Second big issue is kumocloud typically fails to connect with one or more mini split units (I have 8 connected). Not sure if this is a controller issue or app issue, but result is you cannot control a group if a unit within a group cannot connect. Why is this? If a device does not connect, the group should still be controllable. Anyway, fix kumocloud, please. I spent a lot of $ on the wifi controllers, not knowing kumocloud renders them totally unreliable.

Very basic functionality

2024-11-17

kumocloud provides a very basic functionality - you can set a mode (heat/cool/dehumidifier) , fan speed a pretty much all. Any other settings like blade position, I-sensor etc are not accessible. You can also set some basic scheduling.
While the signal is great it still takes 20-30 seconds to connect to the unit and get the information.
kumocloud also has some glitches, like back button being positioned too close in the corners and not registering the presses. In any case it looks like a prototype rather a solid product. This is quite disappointing given $200 for the WiFi unit.

Easy Sophisticated Programming

2024-11-17

I read the negative reviews here and feared I’d made a poor investment on my Mitsubishi system with the Kumo Cloud. I called my contractor to hear how their customers have experienced the systems. My contractor assured me that they customers have been very happy with the WiFi controls. I took the leap of faith and I’m grateful I did. My house is old, a four floor four square. I’ve used windows units that damage my windows and get accidentally left on for days by kids. Within hours of having kumocloud installed, I’d set up sophisticated programs to keep my zones on and off based on how we live in this magnificent old house. The first cycle went on as programmed and the house is so comfortable. I’m impressed. Some suggestions — the program schedule could have better views. A more intuitive by zone or by head view would be a great option. Also, sorting the programs in the default view by time would be helpful. The size and placement of the navigation and save buttons in the upper corners is a problem on iOS. I have not been able to add a zone to simplify control of the two heads on my second floor.
