I really want to like this app, but it’s like a beta. Too many issues to be useful.

I really want to like Airmail but there are just TOO many bugs and issues that render Airmail nearly un-usable. The first, most obvious and strangest is the fact that the main mailbox window “blinks” the email shown in the right hand pane as if it is perpetually updating and trying to re-draw the window. It’s very strange and makes selecting anything other than the MOST recent single email nearly impossible. Also, It seems that the application only downloads (or has access to) a very small subset of ones total email. What use could this possibly serve?!

In other words, I CANNOT use this application (even though I paid for a year of it) because I have ZERO confidence that the emails shown in the browser are ALL my email. If i open Apple Mail, I see a completely different set of emails all the time.

I hate to say this, but there seem to be SO many quirks and strange behaviors that this software is nearly unusable. The developer needs to make a stable piece of software.

Devs never use the apps they make

UPDATE: Do you devs use your own software?!? I've got a folder with 50 items I need to attach. After being asked the dumb question of where I want to upload from, I'm allowed to choose that folder. Yes, I can select all. Guess what that does. Jack all. "Done" and "Deselect" do exactly the same thing. So I'm forced to attach all individually 1 by 1, being asked that 1st stupid question every single time.
____
I've got a great idea for an email app. It lets you read an email, then when you switch over to your calendar or whatever for a second to verify information you're about to send then switch back to it, it loses that message completely such that if you're a power user and use keystrokes to reply, you don't realize you're not responding to the original message. Oh, and even better, if you copy/pasta an email link YOU CAN'T EDIT IT. That would be brilliant. Don't forget to make it ugly, impossible to navigate, unable to customize shortcuts (you know, the simple ones like "Forward"), and incapable of formatting signatures correctly.

Want to Like, But Can’t

After 6 months of Pro use, I just had to move on to a different app. There are tons of features, but I think it greatly increases the complexity of Airmail , slows it down, and increases the bugs. For most email, “non-power” users, Airmail is way overkill. Two aspects I just had a real hard time with are the color schemes and the side bar. They’re just too chaotic for me. Black background with white letters and then the different colored icons, etc on the black background make for poor visibility, especially for 50+ year olds. Yes, you can change to “white” on that side bar, but it only increases the ugliness of the overall interface.

One positive thing though is the ability to create “Rules” for email filtering. There are way more options with this app then with other apps that I have used, a feature that drew me back to trying this app again.

Poor Tech Support

I keep trying other email apps, but I always come back to this app. It is simply the best. I can’t find no major problems with it. It is easy too use, customizable, and the $10 a year fee is acceptable.

The only complaint I have is in regards to their tech support. They are indeed quick to respond to a support request. But if a problem is not resolved after they make 2 or 3 suggestions, they simply leave you hanging and suddenly do not respond. I recently had a question about the Apple Watch this app app. After 3 email conversations back and forth that did not solve the issue, they were suddenly silent. The support simply stopped, without any further ideas. It is as if they completely forgot about me.

Improve the tech support and I can at least give 4 stars.

Fix the ALL Inboxes to show more than 50 emails...

Why won’t you fix this issue??? It’s still like this in your latest beta too. This issue is infuriating at times, especially when needing to search for something.

The main ALL inbox only shows the last 50 emails from any one account, so if you have two accounts, you will see a maximum of 100 emails. This drives me crazy when doing a search for something and not finding anything, only to realize I have to drill into each individual account’s inbox and search each one of them INDIVIDUALLY in order to search for something.

It just should not be like this. Please change/fix this so ALL emails from EVERY account are visible in the ALL inbox. I don’t think I’ve tried any other email program with this type limitation.

Great program, horrific marketing

I purchased this app at version 2 for all of my devices. As others have said, this app decided to go subscription based. Great for them, and I won’t rag on them for that decision. Price was way out of line at first, but now a decent value at $10 per year.

My issues are 1. The forced upgrade to the new pay version with zero notice. 2. The upgrade nag screen every time I open the program. The time to correct #1 has long since passed, but #2 is easily fixable for prior purchasers of the program. I am happy to pay for the subscription, but not until they get rid of the nag screen for customers who paid for the software. There are plenty of other email clients out there. While this app is arguably one of the best, I refuse to give money to a company as deceptive and tone deaf to their previous customers needs.

Same Issue as Before

What good is an email app if it doesn’t actually notify you of new emails? This is the second time I’ve tried Airmail and now it’s doing the exact same thing it did previously when I was using it. Notifications will work for the first 2-3 weeks of having Airmail installed, then presto no more notifications (yes all settings are correct). To see if I’ve received new emails I have to open Airmail and check. So again I ask, what good is an email app that doesn’t notify you of new emails? Sure Airmail has all the bells and whistles (if you’re willing to pay for them) and you can customize this thing to your little hearts desire but what good is all that JUNK, if it can’t even do the most basic process an email app should do? Deleting this garbage once again and going back to Spark. Won’t make the mistake of giving it a 3rd chance either!

Subscribed after a trial. Best design, privacy and functionality

This is amazing. I was in a search for an alternative of iOS default Mail app, mainly I wanted to have “schedule send” option for my Mail but iOS Mail app didn’t yet implemented it even at iOS 14!! So, among all other alternative, Airmail is the only one that did NOT link any data to you, no ads or other privacy-breaching points. Obviously as there is a fee your data are not any more the fees. Also there are a lot of other features that I were not aware about and knows about it. Long review in short: this is the best secure, private, handy, highly customizable Mail app ever.

Excellent email app with fair pricing

I settled on this app after trying many other apps for a few reasons: their privacy policy is pretty good. They aren’t super clear about features like privacy mode but overall pretty good.
Their pricing is fair. Some apps charge more than they’re worth. I’m willing to pay to support development and they found a good price so it’s worth it for me.
Airmail does what it does well and isn’t trying to do everything. I’m tired of email apps with built in calendars and assistants that just get in the way and don’t actually improve anything. Airmail knows what an email app should do (email) and does it well.

I came back $9.99 a year I can do

Ok so I’ll make this quick was and still is the best email app. I bought it a long time ago when it came out. Well, the developers made it have a subscription that was really high after this was a paid app to start with. Now that it has been lowered to $9.99 a year I’ll happily pay that. I do understand it cost money to keep Airmail working and updated. Thanks developers for being more reasonable with the subscription. Really is a great email app. I use it as my default on my iPhone.

Still removing features from those who paid for Airmail 1

One of the features I paid for is the right NOT to be pestered to purchase a subscription. The frequency of this makes Airmail unusable.

Now, I’m getting a message that my phone is “insecure” and Airmail refuses to run at all. Total fail —————— Latest version now removes the ability to mark email as unread. This was included in the non-subscription paid version of this app that lots of us paid for. Under pressure from Apple, the developers had to restore a lot of features they tried to move to behind a paywall when they went to subscription. Well, looks like they’re at it again. I’ll be filing a report with Apple again as this is a violation of App Store policies unless I see a quick update with functionality restored.

Kudos to Airmail Support

I’ve enjoyed using this app for some time now on my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Recently I changed the password on one of my email accounts. That went well on my MacBook and iPad. But on my iPhone Airmail very often had to go to my account web page to refresh Airmail ’s credentials. There never was an issue doing host but it took a bit of time and became annoying.

Steven with this app support was able to talk me through the process of refreshing thee we credentials in a way that they stuck. I’ve had no repeats of that issue since. Many thanks and kudos to Steven.

Time to move on

This was a great app until the past year or so when the search function became useless. Instead of searching all inboxes/folders for all email accounts - as it should - it returns no results which sends one into panic mode. You then have to log into that account from a browser and search until you find the email.

Why?? Isn’t the point of an email app to do all the things the individual account is supposed to?! It’s become too much of a hassle and too many glitches have ruined the experience.

Synching has also been a problem in the last 6 months: folders I’ve created on iOS don’t appear on Mac and vice versa, and worse - emails I moved to said folders vanished. Nightmare.

An inspiring mess

As an email power user, Airmail inspires me. It has all the functionality I could want, and nothing I don’t want. Fully (and I mean fully) customizable actions in just about every aspect of Airmail . Visual and UI customizations, and it’s all modular. Super easy filters, simple app integrations, and no half-baked calendar functionality.

But it is simply executed poorly. The UI is somehow consistently bulky, with wasted space and inconsistent design language. Moving between UI states is almost always clunky and jittery. Certain features easily corrupt the state of the UI and result in weird artifacts. I want this exact app but with a much more consistent UX.

For now I’ll be going back to Edison.

Maddening delays make this a painful user experience

At it’s core, this is a really good app. But the developers make highly questionable choices on a regular basis. Currently the 5-8 second hard coded delays when sending or deleting an email are ruining the experience, forcing a user to stare at the screen for five seconds after sending/deleting before another action can be taken. I request an option to disable those, and they respond to me like I am ridiculous, or have a problem with my hardware. This is a trend with this developer. It’s always something. Unstable app, strange feature they force on you, odd behaviors that take weeks/months to fix. Overall it’s a very solid and attractive app, but it seems to be driven by sloppy decisions.

This is just not for me

When I first got this app, I was impressed. Airmail looked real nice and at the time I thought I will use Airmail for a good while. I maintain five different email addresses. It was nice when I for this app would let me maintain them all. But now I am frustrated. When I scrolling down the emails and many times I ignore the junk and look for my emails that are important. The problem I have with this app is that when I find and email I want to view, I select it. Once I am done, I Want to see the email is there and then keep one scrolling down. But after I select and read an e-mail, it takes me back to the top first email. So then every time, I have to start all over scrolling from the start.

Good Client But Has Some Issues

this app is a decent iOS email client as it allows a great deal of function and customizations.

However, there are some issues that make Airmail annoying to use. Those include getting notifications for all emails received even when set to VIP only. Also, there is no way to create a hyperlink into an email (seems like email 101). And although the tool has trackpad support, you can’t use the trackpad to swipe on an email to delete/archive/etc.

I hope the developer continues to fix these issues and add basic functionality to the tool. Time will tell.

By

So far, useless for me and deceptive

All I want is an email client to use with my mail forwarder. The mail service I use (gmail, yahoo, etc, etc) should be hidden. Net, all messages sent come from the email address of my forwarding service - in other words from an alias. Airmail claims to support aliases and you can even fill in the email address of the forwarding server. When I compose the message, it even looks like it is going to be sent with the forwarding email address. However, when it arrives at the recipient, the reply ignores the alias and uses the actual address of the email provider.

Also the 30 day free trial is actually 3 days but you can cancel your subscription if you cancel 3 days before the renewal!

Utterly shameful bait and switch

I’ve used this app for a few years now on my Macs and iOS devices. I was generally pleased with its features despite ongoing buggy behavior, particularly badge notifications not working. But the bait and switch to a subscription model is infuriating. Now, in apps I have PAID for, I routinely get popups nagging me to do a subscription for themes. $3 a month for themes? Oh sure, there are other features, but themes are what they scream loudest about. That’s insane. I’m not interested in stupid flipping themes nor the other features. I just want the apps that I PAID for to stop nagging me! Of course that won’t happen. The developer got their coin from me and now it’s the middle finger if I don’t pony up every month. Shameful.

Constantly wrong!!

Needs fixed!! Constantly letting you know there's emails but nothing shows up, then you check again there's wrong number as to what it shows on home screen.. You can delete emails and they stay on the home screen.. Just a constant game playing of going in and out of Airmail to see if you have any emails.. Annoying!!!! 🙄

Awesome!!! And powerful and productive!

this app is a power-user email app like none other on iOS. The fact that you can make custom actions combining the numerous supported app actions, as well as launching a Shortcuts shortcut or other URL scheme with user-defined info passed to it is awesome. Maybe a bit niche but I love having the option. I hope they don’t get rid of it (it’s still called Workflow in the action builder) but would be nice to see some more work in custom actions maybe some refinements to what data is available to send. For example, maybe in addition to an this app message link being one of the things you can send to a URL scheme or a shortcut as input, you also add the option to copy a standard Apple Mail message link. Usually the this app link is sufficient but I has times where I need the Mail link. Currently, I have a custom action in this app that will run a Shortcuts shortcut using the message subject and this app link as input, isolate the message ID, construct a message:// link and then offer option to copy or share as just the URL or inline link with subject and url. It’s handy, but would feel more reliable if I could skip the link-building portion entirely, and would show that this is still a priority. I love this app but being a power-user Mail client is a big part of what sets it apart from other apps for me. Let’s keep it up! Great work this app team.

Loaded with features

this app’s strongest attraction is its customizability. It can be tweaked to suit the user’s tastes in look and feel. Because there are several settings, it can take a while to learn the full range, but it is worth taking the time to experiment. I found that going to Airmail ’s website and reading the documentation useful. At the website a pop-up window offers the opportunity to chat in real time with a helper. I chatted with Steven, whose response to my question was prompt, helpful and courteous. The iOS app by itself is very good, but I recommend pairing it with the MacOS counterpart for maximum benefit. My inboxes have a tendency to accumulate more emails than I can easily manage. this app makes sorting messages into folders easy and also allows “snoozing” messages—getting them out of sight for a specified amount of time. Snoozed messages are put into a special folder that can be opened at any time in this app itself or in other mail clients. Alternatively, a message can be instantly transferred to a “To do” folder to be acted upon later, or one of several other temporary folders. There is also a quick-response option to let a sender know with a single tap on an icon that the message has been received and read.

Very buggy and slow

I use this app for Mac OS and it has greatly improved my productivity there. I was hoping for the same with the iOS app, but it is slow, clunky, buggy and littered with too many options.

Keyboard shortcuts are inconsistent in comparison relative to the Mac app. For example, "1" in both applications shows unread messages, great. On the Mac client "0" shows everything, but on the ipad you have to hit "1" again. I specifically bought the ios app to have a consistent experience. I don't want to learn very similar shortcuts, and keep track of which type of device I'm on for some subtle difference. I'd rather them be entirely different as I am less likely to be confused. (Which is why I am back to using the default Mail application.)

In any case, I saw the middling reviews for Airmail and purchased it with some trepidation - but was ultimately sold on how great the desktop app is. Since these pay for apps have no trial period typically, caveat emptor.

Premium is worth it

Updated review: Since the change of the service from one time purchase to subscription yearly or monthly everything has been just absolutely amazing as a user. The service has improved so much in the short amount of time . You will read many reviews saying that they buy reviews and are going against other companies and are doing shady business. Overall really do not trust the reviews on any application because any developer can purchase fake reviews for whatever they want that’s how the system works. Also many come from those who are still frustrated from the new change and I get it i was in the same boat. ALTHOUGH just try it out for yourself. Pay for a one time subscription or use the trial and cancel it through App Store settings. You will appreciate the features and design of the mail app everything is just seriously wonderful it would be insane of me to not review and let you know. Don’t listen to anyone else not even me if you don’t want to I’m just another review but seriously try it out for yourself then you can decide.

The best iOS Mail app

I have tried them all and I keep reviewing new email apps every few months, but this app is the goto mail app I use every day to maintain a zero inbox. Every email is archived, deleted or snoozed to come back to later.

I enjoy the support for multiple accounts and the different options available to visually identify which account each email belongs to. I Iike the fact that each email has a gravatar next to it as this really helps differentiate each email in the list and to locate a specific sender. The swipe features work great. And the ability to track read receipts helps a lot when you want that extra reassurance that somebody read the email. I hate it when other apps miss this feature. And there are so many settings that you can optimise Airmail to your preference. Keeping a zero inbox by archiving or deleting all emails is a pleasure with Airmail.

As an extra bonus whenever I need support I consistently hear from Steven who is super helpful - thanks Steven, your support provides that extra reassurance that the this app team is active and cares for their users.

Not worth a subscription.

This was a once great app when I purchased it years ago. Then the updates stopped coming and bugs remained with poor support on top of that. I assumed Bloop was focusing on their Mac client but that went on and on. I tried other apps but decided to put up with the crashes and poor excuses for updates as it had some features that other apps did not offer (interface with Pocket Informant) The latest font update was a disaster as I cannot find a setting I like.

Now you want me to purchase a monthly or yearly subscription for push notification and multiple accounts when I already paid for full access? No thanks!!! You have not done anything remotely worthy of additional money from me. If you had been pouring in the features over the years, addressed bugs in a timely manner and had additional extras coming out in an extensive upgrade (that I could try fur free or go back to my paid version) I might have considered a one-time upgrade fee. But making me pay a subscription for features I paid for originally, on top of a already poorly supported app, is going too far.

My advice? Stay away and do not bother to "update" or purchase. This buggy and rarely updated app is not worth any additional fees and certainly not a subscription. I am leaving and will not come back.

Pretty good email client, but...

I spent probably $15 on it already if I’m remembering the prices correctly ($5 on iOS and $10 on macOS). In the next 4 months I’m going to be looking for a new email client and debating whether or not I should pay for the subscription. I think people who purchased it on both should get more than 4 months of the subscription for free, maybe a year instead since the macOS app cost twice as much and that’s 4 months plus two times 4 more months. I understand this is more of a service than standalone software, but not enough of one to really justify paying every month. Maybe make the free version usable but for smaller things, like someone just looking to receive emails and send them occasionally, and make the subscription a bit more and make it have the more business-y features. If you do it right, the features you’re asking people to pay much more for are the ones that the majority of people who need them also have a good enough job to afford all the little subscription costs. I know this is a long rant for not a huge amount of money, but these things add up, so people try to avoid them wherever possible.

edit: it’s not seeming like it’s actually going to give me the free 4 months. that’s stupid and i’m really not thinking i’m going to pay for any of it now.

Excellent App with a few issues

this app has been my email app of choice for the past couple of years on iPad, iPhone and Mac. The application is beautiful and includes numerous useful integrations like OmniFocus, Evernote, Box, Dropbox.

The biggest issue over time has been some of the glitches. Every now and then I need to re-sync my email accounts to be sure it is pulling in all of the messages. This is usually not an issue, but when it happens, its not fun.

Finally, they just rolled out an update to the iPhone/iPad version that included a premium subscription. First, I agree with many of the comments here that the messaging was severely lacking. A major change like this should have been explained months before it went live. With that said, I am happy to pay a small annual subscription for an app with all the functionality of this app. I just subscribed and really love the night theme (and the other 2 colors). It is so great to have emails actually render with a dark background. Great work! I just hope the developers didn’t burn too many bridges with the poorly executed move to subscription.

Great All Around Experience.

First of all Airmail itself is really well featured without being over-engineered. I am constantly on the quest to find a full and relevant featured email client which isn’t obtrusive.....this is it!

Secondly I had an issue with Airmail where my default sender emails were being formatted from right to left. I couldn’t figure out why this was happening so decided to take advantage of the ‘live chat’ option in settings. Rarely do these yield results let alone immediate responses but I thought why not give it a go. To my surprise I was emailed back within three minutes by a tech support person named Steven who told me that I’d inadvertently checked the ‘right to left’ button in settings, (for Arabic and Hebrew). I unchecked the button and voila ! What was even more impressive about this was that I emailed them at 5:am local time Los Angeles and received the response at 5:03am.

It’s precisely this kind of service and overall design of an app that gets my loyalty and therefore 5 star rating.

Still the best IOS email client

First, let’s get this out of the way: People have a right to be angry at the developers for the way they handled the switch to subscription pricing: if you made a list of 10 things to ABSOLUTELY NOT DO when making that switch, these devs could check off every one. The case is easy to make for switching to subscription pricing, but they never even tried to make it, nor made any attempt to mollify legacy users.

But, that’s over now, and as someone considering Airmail for the first time, let me tell you—it’s absolutely worth the subscription price. This is hands down the best email app for iOS and iPadOS, and with their change to subscription pricing there has been a huge surge in development, fixing many of the little tiny issues from the previous versions. At this point, everything is working just as it should and I could not be happier. I’m glad to pay the yearly fee if it means this is what I can expect from the developers.

There are tons of options for the UI to suit your taste, and in my opinion it is vastly superior to other options particularly in this regard. It looks sharp, is very useable, and a pleasure to spend time with. The notifications work flawlessly now, gmail support is rock solid, and Airmail itself is very stable.

I only hope that people give Airmail a chance after the subscription fiasco and it can stay popular enough to support ongoing development.

Best app, now worst app

This bait and switch pay program they are doing should not be allowed by App Store rules. How they pulled it off, has dumbfounded me. They were the best per my original review below. However to strip features and then make me pay for them again and again whilst I had already originally paid is literally ripping customers off. No two ways about it. No misunderstanding. No explanation by them. What an awful experience.

I am shocked that Airmail does not have at least a 4.5-star rating. My entire Sales and Marketing team use Airmail on a daily basis constantly. We absolutely can not get along without Airmail . All the third-party app integrations are very useful. I guess for those individuals who do not use several productivity apps, this app may be overkill for their needs. However, they should love the ease of use and the ability to customize their mail to display however they want to see it. Again, I have rated this app as 5-stars. However the overall App Store rating should at least be 4.5-stars at a minimum, compared to the apps current rating, if you are using Airmail as a productivity-driven business professional.

Most of the features are hidden

I want to use this mail client but the design defeats the features. For example, take Snooze an email so it comes back later, you have to slide the email to the left, past the Delete option, open the Actions, then select the Action, then select the option you want for that action. Painful. Sliding left is awkward, sliding past the delete feels precarious, then you open the Actions and then hit Snooze, THEN get some Options like come back in a week. It's too many steps to use routinely so I've never really started using the Actions. Apple loves hidden features these days (try deleting multiple photos in Photos) so its no wonder it won the Design Award but hiding things really makes occassional ordinary tasks difficult. It's not intuitive, it's hidden until you know the secret steps which is the definition of bad UI. Frustatingly filled with promise but who wants to spend their time learning more about email? Email is like the soles of shoes - necessary but really, how much time do I want to spend thinking about the soles of my shoes?

Beautiful, Seamless, Needs More iPad-Rich Features

This remains the best combination of features & customizability I’ve found in the Apple ecosystem. I have it on my Watch, iPad, iPhone, & Mac.

I keep it at four stars due to certain glaring omissions, which have been requested on their forums for some time, which remain incredibly frustrating. For example, ⌥ + delete, on an iPad Pro with a linked keyboard, does not delete a whole word (merely a single letter). ⌘ + delete, instead of deleting a whole line, confusingly doesn’t delete anything at all.

It’s hard to imagine any reason the functionality of basic, ubiquitous text editing shortcuts cannot be implemented. An email UX is in large part a text editor—this isn’t a small oversight. Perhaps I’m being too ambitious trying to make an iPad my primary mobile machine, but most of the things that would make that possible would easily be solved by developers mirroring keystrokes known to anyone who knows how to use a Mac for actual work.

Long time user, realized I was missing out on Mail!

I have been a long time user of this app on both Desktop and iOS. Just today I got the upgrade and alert that the iOS app I have been enjoying and using for years, paid, will now be limiting features in order for me to upgrade to a subscription. I immediately downloaded regular Mail and it has so many improvements over this app now that I may never go back. Just this last week or so this app changed fonts (harder to read, especially those with dyslexia), and images (and email widths being cut off) within emails on both systems have looked janky for years. I thought it was the sender but questioned this app too. Fired up mail and all the messages look great. Goodbye this app! There is too much to fix and improve, plus you should have made a brand new app if you wanted to go to subscription and leave the old app fully functional. There was a golden time for this app, but that was years ago. Loving the “new to me” functions of the built in Mail app now. May look at other email apps too but if Mail is tons better than this app, that’s saying something.

Payed for this twice, rip off

I payed for the full version years ago for iOS and Mac. Now I need to pay again for basic functionality!? I decided to pay for the subscription so I could get my notifications back... yeah how Ridiculous is that? Subscription fee for push notifications... After paying I have the premium version or w/e but notifications don’t work anymore. I messed with my notification settings, and the “real-time inbox monitoring” setting and I still do not receive push notifications. I use this mail client for work and need notifications, so I contacted support, they told me to do what I already had done.

The evolution of Airmail is unacceptable, double dipping on long time customers to push features that are core to any email client as premium is ridiculous. Pushing those same features at a premium whilst they’re broken is incompetence at best.

I’m canceling my subscription, ditching this scam, and finding a new client. Lastly, Apple how did recent version of Airmail pass moderation? Apple, you’re to blame as well and should be embarrassed.

Why can't I delete the Airmail folder from MS Outlook? I have tried contacting Airmail via the IOS app but, they seem to be refusing to answer my emails. I have supplied screenshots but, still no reply.
