Really sad. Collected about 30 Lbs of trash at a beach this morning and a stranger came up and told me about CleanSwell . Was so excited to try it out I went to a different beach for sunset to do a bit more collecting. It’s too windy and cold to enter each point as I go, and honestly annoying to enter ever lid as I pick it up, so I put my phone in my pocket as i walk and expect I’ll tally my garbage in my garage at home. Was super sad when I got back to the car and found that CleanSwell had terminated my collection after inactivity! And you can’t edit the collection after it’s been submitted. I want to participate in citizen science so badly, but CleanSwell is going to skew participants away from people like me that hike the beach and collect for fun on the side. I won’t sacrifice my hike to collect data, and I’m a scientist for my job. Field work is messy and inconvenient. An inability to edit your collection after or “be inactive” while you keep your hands warm or your phone away from water diminishes the utility of CleanSwell and accuracy of these data. It also said I walked 3.25 miles, and I definitely only walked 1-1.5 according to my Fitbit, which is probably overestimating already. What CleanSwell is trying to do is interesting and important, but I’m hoping for improvements

We had volunteers who mentally kept track of their stats, and then were planning to just enter their data into CleanSwell all at once at the end of the cleanup, not realizing CleanSwell only allows you to click "+" for every single piece of trash that was collected. It's rather tedious to sit there and enter 255 bottle caps...It should give you both options: a counter for entering as you go, but it should also include a drop down/blank to allow you to just enter the total number of each trash item collected, afterwards (for those who don't want to hold their phones while they're picking up trash, especially while near water...).

We also didn't like how we couldn't link our smaller groups together, so that we could easily get the overall stats for our cleanup efforts.

If CleanSwell stays the same, then for next year's cleanup we're just going back to writing our stats down on data cards.

I typically never write reviews but I have downloaded and deleted and re-downloaded CleanSwell multiple times, restarted my phone and tried every trick possible, but I can’t even get past the registration page. It keeps giving me a registration error... I then tried doing “forgot password” to try anything different to get me into CleanSwell but then I received a password error message. I’ve literally tried every possible option but can’t register to use CleanSwell . Unfortunately, I didn’t even want to download CleanSwell due to limited storage on my phone but I wanted to register for a location for international coastal cleanup day and this was the only option to do that. Now I can’t even register a cleanup site. Really disappointed. :(

I used the Clean Swell app for the first time today. In the middle of collecting items I must have touched something on CleanSwell and everything disappeared. Tried to get back where I left off, but couldn’t get back to the screen. Had to start over and estimate litter collection where I left off. When I finished I press the button indicated that I was finished. No history shows on my app and results were never emailed to me. Keeps saying history is being downloaded, but it has over been 8 hrs. If nothing shows up soon I going to delete CleanSwell.

I have been trying to create an account through CleanSwell for the last couple of weeks. Always gives me an error message.

I loved CleanSwell and had it for a few years. I got a new phone and downloaded CleanSwell again, but it will not open after multiple attempts to uninstall and reinstall it. Again when CleanSwell works it is awesome but if it will not open it is worthless.

We were doing our cleanup and tracking and everything was going great. At the very end we stopped to look at some ducks at a pond. My phone locked. When I logged back into my phone CleanSwell had reset and all of our tracking was cleared!! In other words, it wasn’t saving as went. It only saves at the end when you click “done” and “submit.” It should be programmed to auto-save along the way so data isn’t lost. Then we had to try to remember our numbers and tap them in one click at a time for each category because CleanSwell doesn’t let you enter numbers, just clicks.

Lastly, it would’ve been cool to be able to see what other volunteers had logged at the end of the cleanup for our location and how many volunteers participated.

Otherwise, I liked the interface. It was so easy my 4 year old could use it.
It could use a “metal bottle cap” category. There were tons of those. And “metal can tabs” and “plastic bag tabs.” We found lots of each of those. Thanks!

CleanSwell won't submit my info when I try to register.

CleanSwell is great and makes cleanups more accessible by providing an easy-to-use interface to record and share data. However, I encountered a glitch where my data was lost while recording yesterday, losing hundreds of recorded items from a multi hour long stretch. Further, I cannot log in to CleanSwell today, getting errors stating “Registration error” and “location error”. I would love to have access to my data, and would also enjoy an event by event summary of material collected and total weight to allow for comparison of trash encountered in different places. Otherwise, this is a wonderful app and a great tool to add to any conservationist’s toolkit!

We had one person doing the days entry while collecting, so we got good data. When we finished and submitted, it asked if we wanted to share. I was not ready and did not. Now there is no way to share on social media or send the data to someone else. My son wants the data for school. Frustrating, but otherwise good.

Our family picks trash every time we go for a walk. My kids love getting the badges and were disappointed today that CleanSwell didn’t launch. It keeps crashing, I deleted CleanSwell and reinstalled but have luck. Can you fix this issue?

I like CleanSwell , but would recommend being able to add pictures from my library, not just the camera. I have pictures of our cleanup, but they are in my library and I am not able to attach to CleanSwell .

I love clean swell a lot and it motivates me to clean up more trash and not just at the beach, but today I recorded a hour long cleanup with 26 pounds of trash picked up but it wouldn’t log it in. I put it in again and it submitted it but wouldn’t show up. Pls fix soon. 🙏🏻🐬

This is a great app and tracks impact well! I was wondering if it could be possible to make teams and have users motivate each other and work together for a goal? some running apps do this and its a great motivator!

I love being able to track my impact as I clean our beach! I use every time I go to beach— or even just a river!

Love CleanSwell. Ocean plastic is a huge problem and this enables me to make a difference by recording the trash I pick up.

Very easy to use and gratifying to be able to look back and see what you’ve collected. Used it for a cleanup in my neighborhood!

We used Clean Swell as a team (one person recording) and it was a great way to keep track of our impact, and provided a platform for discussion of what we found. It was very satisfying to see our numbers afterwards!

It's so important that we not only prevent trash from entering our ocean and cleaning our beaches, but that we have a tool to monitor and measure the impacts that are dealing great damage to this essential ecosystem.

Simple features. Works great for real time data recording.

You can record stuff on the go but it has some areas to improve regarding editing or adding data later.

Please enable:

1. Editing of the collection event. I had neglected to update the number of pounds collected from the auto-estimated 30#s to the actual 336#s.

2. Manual input of collected items. We have to tap 20 times if we collect 20 cans, for example. It would be nice to have an option to just type in 2-0 and be done without it.

3. Adding photos from camera roll. Currently we can only add from the camera.

4. After the fact location adding. I'm glad we can record past events but it would be nice to record a past location and not just use my current location as the site of a Cleanup.
