GIPHY: The GIF Search Engine Reviews

UPDATE: The response I got from customer support was to delete and redownload GIPHY which has been the “solution” every time this has happened. I’m dropping my rating from a 4 to a 2 as this is not an acceptable “resolution” to an issue that happens with almost every single update. After GIPHY is updated the icon in the keyboard (messages app, etc) turns into a little white icon. This is the only app that I’ve had this issue with and while it is nothing more than a cosmetic issue as of now, the point still stands that this shouldn’t happen almost EVERY update.

Original Review: This is by far my favorite gif app out there. My only problem with it is that it seems like every other update that gets pushed out breaks the keyboard function of GIPHY in messages. I’m not the only one that has this issue. I’ve got a few family members and friends who also see this same issue.

Already emailed support and will gladly update my review if this issue gets resolved but like I said it seems like every other update this happens.

I’d like to know why I had this app yesterday and I don’t have it today? Is there anything else that I need to know about that Apple Store took from my iPhone phone today? I’m very upset with this. I’ve paid my bills. I had trouble due to I didn’t have enough protection on my phone and when AT&T told me that to go through y’all and get call protection for free. Free?Why did y’all put me through this and take who knows what off my phone. How professional is that? Right now y’all have no stars. That’s no way to treat your customers. I can’t help we have so many dishonest people in this country who don’t mind taking your information and making you look bad. That’s where I’ve been.I’ve had to report 4 times my debit card number being used by others and credit cards,too . This is why I need protection.

I use GIPHY multiple times a day, but it pulls so much memory that it is becoming unusable. GIPHY is in no way streamlined for heavy users. I've saved almost 1000 gifs as favorites, but there are no playlists, no rapid scrolling, so personal tagging features, so all of them appear as one giant list. The scrolling system is just broken. I have to wait for each gif to load before I can scroll to an earlier part of the list. I've spent 20 minutes just trying to get to the gif I need, even when I know exactly what and where it is. GIPHY worked great when I had 10 favorites, now I'm lucky if I get through 1/10 of my favorites before it crashes. In some cases I have to quit every other app on my phone, then restart the phone, just to use the basic functions of GIPHY.

I would switch to a different app in a second if it actually worked. They need to fire their entire UX team and find someone actually competent at the job.

I don’t know what happened, but since switching over to the 13 pro max it doesn’t work well in messages. I live by the group chat. With that being said every time I come up with something witty, and I want to follow it with a gif, or when I want to react to someone’s message I’m having a hard time to do so. I tap on the this app app in my messages and nothing loads. Just a black page. I gotta exit a few times till eventually it loads (doesn’t do it all the time, but enough times to be unhappy to write a review). By that time the group chat has sent 50+ messages and my gif will be irrelevant. Do you know how much of a loser I feel like when I’m being roasted, and I can’t add a gif to whoever I’m about to burn!? Please help me emotionally hurt these suckas in the group chat!!

I’m on an iPhone X with iOS 13.3. For some time now, I’ve noticed that when using the this app keyboard to send texts (by just tapping the GIF image you want to use, and allowing it to automatically add the image to your text message), the animation-speed of the GIF that gets sent is noticeably slower that what the this app keyboard showed, and the sent GIF usually ends several frames too soon. The only way I’ve found to send GIPHYs that play back at regular speed is to open the this app *app*, and from there, I have the option to save a GIF to my camera roll. THEN I can go to my camera roll and attach THAT saved GIF to a text message.

It’s a few extra hoops to jump through, which is why I deducted a couple stars. As far as being able to quickly find appropriate and funny GIFs for my needs, it’s great.

I have tried everything to fix this problem for a month now including contacting the support email. After over a week of emails the problem still isn’t solved and it doesn’t seem like it will be. Every time I click “use” after I have selected a sticker it just goes know where land. I love GIPHY I’m just feeling frustrated that no one seems to know what’s going on. I’m really sad since I was going to try to get verified as an artist.

Update : customer service is crap. after emailing for 2 weeks they can’t tell me how to fix the problem and basically told me to use my computer instead. I’m sorry but that’s ridiculous when I create my gif stickers from my iPad. I have never left an angry review before but this is infuriating. My iPad is brand new and I have not changed anything. It is a problem with GIPHY but no one knows how to fix it apparently.

I cannot believe how simple GIPHY seemed upon finding it and thinking it may be the very thing needed to make customizable gifs, notes, ways to communicate to text and express feelings. Instead, I would select photos and be told to select more or less photos, or to allow complete access to my device. NO CORRECT ACTION TO DO ANYTHING HERE IS AVAILABLE FOR CUSTOM TEXTS, or GIF NO MATTER FHE TIME SPENT NOR EFFORT APPLIED. SEEMS THE SPP ONLY WANTED ACCESS TO ALL MY INFORMATION , location and no amount was enough!!!
I cannot delete my account, if in fact , I was able to create one, without the use of a computer but, I was able to download GIPHY , that seemingly can be used only with a computer, and not a phone, which it was readily downloaded with. I’m literate enough to make my own pics, texts etc. without the help of an app that is useless, to myself at least.

I’ve used GIPHY for many years. It has never failed me. It supports the free app market which brings me back to the roots of the mid-1995 explosion of free programs for folks who were just getting into the internet. That was the heart of the true purpose of the global community at the time. The structure of GIPHY and ease of use makes it number one to me in the free and paid market place for similar apps. The programmers expertise in the design is outstanding and the updates are just wonderful that come out from time to time. I want to thank GIPHY designers for this wonderful free product.

GIPHY’s search feature is either too specific or too generic depending on your philosophy.
For example, tap on this app in messenger. Type in search keywords “Lady Gaga” and half of the offerings are from Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. If you want only Lady Gaga, type in just “Gaga” as a keyword.
If you want a this app of Queen Elizabeth II, be ready for frustration. You will get any queens including drag, you will get any Elizabeth, you will get anything with II, as Rocky II.
I tried “Keep Calm and Carry On”. I did not keep Calm nor carry on. I opened Google image search. Saved all the posters I liked, and post photographs.
But people love short animation. I blame US television commercials.

**update to the update** no more issues as of late. Back to 5 stars!

**update* freezing and crashing update is fixed but the GIFs I try to use in iMessage are all being cut very short so you don't actually see the whole thing. The preview shows the whole thing but cuts it off when it's selected. *

Never had an issue with it working before but as of today GIPHY crashes on start every time even after restarting my phone. The messaging part is frozen in iMessages as well. Completely unusable at this point.

GIPHY used to be great, but it’s no longer worth you trouble if you’re intending to use it to post gif reactions or images on message boards. The last update broke the “copy image link” feature. Now, when a link is copied, the entire link is no longer copied to your mobile device’s clipboard. You are now provided with a partial link that lacks the latter portion, including the actual image’s name and file extension. The only thing that you post on a message board when using GIPHY is a big, red X indicating a broken image link.

Furthermore, when you compare the partial link that is provided by GIPHY to the link that is provided by the site when visiting it from a laptop or workstation, the links are noticeably different.

Save yourself a lot of time, headache and heartache, and choose a different app for your gif needs.

the entire point I downloaded GIPHY is because I wanted to be able to convert gifs to Live Photos so I can make them into wallpapers but whenever I try to save gifs as Live Photos it just doesn’t work I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling again and that hasn’t worked either, neither has restarting my phone, I’ve given it all the access needed to do it but every time I try to the little green line will pop up for a second then just disappear and no photo was saved, kinda disappointed ngl but there’s some other features about it that are pretty cool, I hope someone can come up with a solution but for now it’s a solid 3/5

First off, I have NEVER left a review for any app but THIS one is just so much dang fun. I discovered it by accident looking for something else and I am SOOOOO glad I did. I have been messing with this thing for over an hour sending all my friends (at least they used to be - HA! HA! HA!) multiple gifs and stickers and even a little bit of the moving texts. GIPHY is UBER easy to use and the Search engine is spot on. I have read that other people have had issues, but so far NOT me. Do yourself a favor and download GIPHY and give it a try. You won’t be sorry!!!!!!!!

I agree that this app is a fun app to use. It has many fun gifs to choose from and when I don’t find one I like, I can make my own. The only thing that bothers me is that for some reason I can’t change my profile picture. I tried clicking on it, looking for it in the edit drop down, and even tried to look it up on the internet. I’ve been told that sometimes the kind of phone affects apps in some ways. I have an IPhone 5 if that is any help. I would appreciate an explanation for what I’m doing wrong, or if it’s a bug I would like it to be fixed. Thank you for working hard on GIPHY!

I think you Birthday app when recognizing sisters have become disgusting! Do you have to show so many women in compromising positions and being so sexual just to send a message to a sister?? I had to get away from my young grandchildren that wanted to send a message to her with me in order to locate an appropriate Birthday wish to her.

May you should invest in a phonography sight if you need to show so much of that garbage! I will seek other apps if you all don’t get any better than this. Sad example to children today. ☹️😢😞😕😒

i wanted to make a gif of my friend from this funny video of him but it NEVER shows up every time i try to go through with it no matter what i did (i even turned my phone off, closed out & reopened GIPHY , updated GIPHY , and even got it on my iPad to see if it would do it) but NOTHING! i really used to love GIPHY but now i can’t even make my own gifs anymore. also not only can i NOT see the video i’m trying to turn into a gif, but WHY should i be forced to put a sticker on it before proceeding??! IT’S FUNNY ON ITS OWN!

i literally NEVER leave reviews for apps so this is really telling something with how unhappy i am with GIPHY that i USED TO love and be able to USE.

Being a painter of 40 years and living in the times of visual digital art becoming more and more popular. I find GIPHY. always an easy way to express myself on the phone in my hand.
I have learned to use photos of my earlier Original paintings as backgrounds then choosing from the many wonderful animated stickers and gifs and moving them anywhere on my original paintings, making them come to life, combining this with other apps,( GIPHY is very friendly to use with other Gif Apps👍) I am able to then add another dimension as of timing …and I am able to create something unique.
I love submitting them and sharing them with the world. this app is very user friendly and uploading is a snap. I give GIPHY a 10+.
A must for artists.
Lots of great Gifs to choose from as well Quality Gifs.

this app has great features

i like the sticker feature you can add it to your photos and to your videos.

the gif maker lets you make little memory videos, less than 14 seconds, on you ipad photo app and then transfer them to this app and create a gif and add stickers and then upload it to facebook or to your camera roll.

if you press favorite on the new gif, you can then see the gif on your this app app under favorites. making giphies is a good hobby for people who like to create moving scrapbooks and share them wih their friends and family.

their this app website is linked to the this app app and stores your creations to the this app app under your account name.

all for free but if they ever wented to charge a subscriotion fee
, i would be willing to pay $10 a month for my this app scrapbook hobby. it would be easy and fun to keep enjoying all their this app features.

Myself not anyone in my family has had any issues with updates for the this app application. I’m going with “user error” or maybe you need to update your IOS or update your old phone.

All that time wasted deleting and reinstalling GIPHY . Your “favorite GIPH app”. Then you drop it to a 2 star. Nope you are the 2 this application is a 10.... there is not enough stars.

People need to get a check in with reality. THIS IS A FREE FREAKING COOL APP that can be used ANYTIME. Must be vet important like Ron Burgundy

1)Idk how often others use the favorite feature, but I use it weekly. I wish there was a way to organize my favorites or tag them, so I can access them quicker instead of scrolling for it until its to irrelevant to send anymore.
2) the search in messages wont allow me to use the magic keyboard, so I either have to smudge up my screen or open GIPHY to use the keyboard

Faster way to SEARCH and share, yes! Fastest way to SAVE and share, no! There are too many gifs here. That’s actually a marvelous thing! Except there are no folders to organize them. I don’t have the time or care to sift through a hundred “clapping” gifs to find the one I like each time. So I save it to favorites. Great! But then I have a gif for EVERY reaction, and often a dozen PER reaction type (gotta have fandom reactions and plain reactions and celebrity reactions, etc). So if we could just create folders in our favorites so I don’t have to scroll through 500 gifs every time I’m looking for the perfect Star Trek or sports or reaction gif, I’d give you two more stars. This is 2019. If you can’t give us folders already, you lose three stars on the rating. Keeping us scrolling through so many gifs in our favorites drains our batteries and wastes our data. Someone please hook us up with folders!

Everything else about GIPHY is pretty darn great, 5-star worthy, even.

this app is at least one of, if not THE best place to find gifs. It’s servers contain a huge selection of the world’s gif-image cultural heritage. It’s very important.
BUT the access is inconsistent. On a bad this app day, if you scroll more than two thumb-swipes down any search, be prepared for endless rows of bright this app brand squares and loading spiral animations. It’s pretty consistently a problem across multiple devices, even in places with lightning fast download speeds and plenty of bandwidth. In other words, this is definitely an issue with GIPHY itself.
Also, their search algorithm is must be pretty vague. It’s difficult to find something specific, even if you put in plenty of good search terms.

Most people will download GIPHY anyway. I would even recommend they do so, but be aware that the this app app is not consistently functional from one day to another.

This is an amazing gif app that is also far more popular than other gif apps and websites, superior in every way! You can like and create gifs! And now stickers too! One bug about the gif creation though, you can take a video or a single picture and add the stickers from this app to them, I tried using some final fight stickers, and when I tapped them, it showed the little reloading gif at the bottom, but then the sticker doesn’t appear, was it removed? Locked? Private only? Why can’t I? I have done it before on my first gif (the exact same stickers FYI)

I think it’s fantastic that you offer such a tremendous array of stickers. I am looking forward to seeing your new ones this year. You are doing a great job, keep it up!! Will your new ones allow me to text and add to my new keyboards? I have got 4 additional keyboards. One of which is the Big Emo, the others are very similar to the original one that came with my device ( iPhone 8 Plus) I am really looking forward to your new stickers! Thank y’all so much.

Overall you can find good .gifs. However they need a better search engine. I get all kinds of weird results when I search. Also it would be nice if they could require a rating for more rated R type .gifs. I would not want my child searching and seeing the results I see just by searching “birthday” etc. I find some offensive. I wish they had a filter to turn those off so you don’t see them. I do like you can find .gifs and it’s pretty easy to put on fb or text messages. Definitely not good for kids though.

LOVE GIPHY. But with the last few updates he app loads then freezes so I have to restart the entire app. I tried pausing the gifs hoping that would solve the problem and it doesn’t. The person that mentioned how all of the favorites are linked into one list is on point. It’s hard to go find the gifs I’ve favorited bc I have to scroll through hundreds of them AND wait for them to load to see where I am in the list. A way to sort them would be awesome. But the biggest gripe is the fact that it always freezes unless you’re in the iMessage app.

I’m reluctant to update after reading so many seemingly valid issues regarding the most recent update as I already had issues (from time to time) with “prior” version.(many times copy-paste leaves gif “flat”/& non animated etc.) So I’ll wait for improved comments on latest update b4 I attempt to update bcuz too often lately updates in general (from all apps) have completely ruined how GIPHY worked & its user-experience awa its tendencies to create glitches to my iOS phone as well GIPHY itself for unknown reasons🤷🏼‍♀️. Therefore I think I’ll wait to “update” until reviews on current update improves resolving all concerns. Sorry—but tyvm.
