Annoying ad machine that sorta counts your steps
2022-05-22
by Experienced Player Level 86
“If it’s not broken - break it!” is the motto of one of the developers who is part of the team now in charge of this app, and it’s exactly what they have done with what used to be a favorite app. You are constantly bombarded with loud and intrusive ads that make using this app a nightmare. You get those more or less every time you switch to Stepz . It’s very careless to have that on an app that people use when they are physically active. It’s not just annoying and frustrating, it’s also distracting and can be a safety hazard, showing a high degree of disregard for the users from the developers. Apparently the permanent ad bar on the this app screen was not enough for them. What you get for all this is a very questionable aesthetics update and lots of distinction which the pre-2019 version didn’t have - your monthly, yearly, etc, totals are always miscounted after midnight. To fix it you must 1) open Stepz 2) force close Stepz 3) reopen Stepz (yay, ads); if you ever travel to a different time zone all your data gets totally corrupted and you have to download it from....the free in-built step counter that comes with your phone! Each and every time! And one wonders why they demand those outrageous prices for “the full experience”. All of this has been the same for quite some time now, so obviously the developer does not care for us, users of this app.
Absolutely Hate New Design

Stepz used to be great. It was easily 4-5 stars. Then they changed the interface a few months ago and now it’s horrible. 1) Before, you could see your goal AND number of EXACT steps achieved for the day on one screen. Now you have to look at 2 screens for the same info. 2) You use to get the EXACT steps achieved above the graphics so you could tell at a glance what you did different days of the week. Now you have to tap on each bar to see that # at the top for a single day. You have to tap each bar to get the steps for that day. 3) There is a pop-ad EVERY TIME you touch the screen for whatever reason. I get you need to make money, but REALLY??? 4) You used to see the entire last 7 days by default. Now you have to scroll in order to see that ... along with another ad pop-up. 5) The washed out colors are horrible. The vibrant ones were much more pleasing to the eye. I’m so disgusted, it’s getting deleted after happily using it several years.
New features and excessive ads ruined this Stepz

this app has more ads than any other app I have ever used. The cost to stop the ads is ridiculous especially for an app that took a giant step backwards with its “improvements.” Color scheme and readability due to the washed-out colors is terrible. Over-all display of data including every facet of miles/steps data displays are now awful. Ads pop up at almost every touch of the screen and are very difficult to close. Video ads, that are way too loud and are just plain obnoxious constantly pop up as well. I realize there will be a, “we’re sorry you’re not enjoying our app and here are the reasons why you should be” response to my critique but it just doesn’t cut it. I’ve read all the reviews which are dead-on and the responses which are weak. If you don’t have Stepz, don’t waste your time getting it. The frustration level it creates just isn’t worth it. I gave it try after try with all the downgrading it’s gone through and now I’m done. There is no redeeming value for using this app at this point and without a major overhaul it will end up in the pile of once good apps turned bad that no one uses anymore!
Ruined App - Don’t Download

This is actually an updated review from one I gave a few weeks ago. I was complaining about the bugs in Stepz with incorrect data and a few other items. After leaving the review I noticed a follow up from one of the developers saying they had had an update that fixed a lot of the bugs so I thought I’d try updating it and see if it fixed any of them. So I deleted Stepz and reinstalled it (why it didn’t automatically update like the rest of my apps, and yes it’s on auto update, is a good question but one I’ll leave for later). So, after running the new app the developer was correct, those bugs are fixed. BUT, now there are so many ads that pop up it’s basically unusable! I just left it Stepz when an ad came up where there was no way to get out of it! Seriously! They had a really nice little app that they have screwed up so bad it’s unusable. Sad. So DONT WASTE YOUR TIME ON Stepz. GO FIND A BETTER ONE. -Rob
The ads are intrusive—full-screen with blaring sound and no way to set default to silent. The ad screen stays open after timed animation and is difficult to close w/o inadvertently being pushed to websites or app store. —Therefore I no longer look at app during my walks—I ask my walking buddy for her step count instead. Too bad.
I’ve also noticed flakey app behavior—periodic disappearance of my step goal or failure to register a day’s steps; sometimes counting one day’s steps as 2 days.
Disappointing. I like Stepz ’s features (see first review below), but I now avoid looking at app except once at end of day. I used to look at small ads on app dashboard; now they disrupt app use so much that I use Stepz much less. ———- Earlier review: I’ve used the free app for 4 months as a pedometer. I like the easy-to-read display of current & recent days’ activity, esp the weekly average. I am a light user and can’t justify spending $50+ a year for a subscription (that price is just under a low-end fitbit with accompanying app).
After a recent update, full-screen ads regularly pop up during app use—one had sound that I couldn’t lower, which was really aggravating. I didn’t mind in-screen ads, which I sometimes find relevant, but the new full-screen ones are so disruptive.

Stepz challenged me to walk more. It is a simple yet powerful app. The best feature is the automatic goal setting. If you don't take 10,000 steps a day, this setting will ease you into that goal and encourage to to go beyond.
However, I have a complaint. I encouraged my husband to get Stepz. Instead of being able to buy Stepz there is now a subscription! And what a rate! Really? So many apps developers have become greedy. Stepz is great but I’m not sure it’s worth such a rate and with the black cloud of a recession or worse looming over our country there will be many that won’t be able to afford it. In addition to that, the ads are so in your face Stepz is not worth having without the subscription.
Stepz itself is worth 5+ stars but because of the high subscription rate and the in-your-face ads, I have dropped the rating down to 2 stars.
Inconvenient at its Best!!

I used to love this this app app until I was unable to check my mileage and other factors because of annoying ads that were impossible to X out and rendered Stepz useless in real time! I understand the necessity of advertising to support your business model however allowing this intentional ridiculous design to impede the purpose of Stepz in order to encourage paid subscriptions is extremely upsetting and I would never respond to any of those ads on general principle alone. If your purpose is to annoy your users by posting ridiculous ads that aren’t even appealing or relevant you’ve accomplished your goal. I think that you personally would feel the same way if you were out walking and couldn’t utilize Stepz which used to be much more user friendly. Something to consider.
I liked it until the last update

I downloaded Stepz during the summer and checked it every day through fall and winter. Overall, i find it really encouraging to know that i walked 4 or 5 miles on days when i haven’t taken time to “work out” but I’ve been busy/on my feet throughout the day. Having the data also gives me an incentive to walk at least as much as I did on other days within the last week. But I just deleted Stepz last night because the last update screwed up my data. On Friday I had more than 10K steps, and on Saturday I barely had any because my phone battery was dead most of the day. after the update it showed Wednesday as having more than 12K steps but barely any for Thursday Friday or Saturday, like the one really low day was stretched out to three. I’m also skeptical about the accuracy because there have been times that i was sitting on the bus or subway for a while, and the step counter went up before I stood up. I’m not sure if I’ll download the same app to see if that fixes it or just try a different app.
Great job!

Since I started using your app I’ve lost the weight I was trying too lose. I was at almost 200 pounds and I set my mind too get down too my BMI of 165. I accomplished that goal in April when my doctor saw I was at 160. I told him I wanted too get now too 145 and he said no. He told me I was at my ideal weight. I still watch how many steps I walk every day with your app and at least I know I can keep track as too maintain a somewhat consistent schedule even though I still want too lose more weight. I like too challenge myself too walk those extra steps. I look at Stepz everyday and try too set goals too beat my previous steps from the day before. Now that I’m at my ideal weight at least I know I can stay persistent by keeping track of how many miles I’ve walked in one days time by looking at Stepz . Each day, marks a new beginning, a new challenge of trying too always do better too stay healthy. Don’t ever give up having Stepz. I don’t want too be buying a pedometer too wear on my belt.
I have been using this app for a while now. I recently upgraded my phone. I reinstalled the this app app to find no sign in option. Or maybe I overlooked it. Idk. Went threw the steps to get to a part that says I have to pay. What!!! I just want to sign in get my progress from my old phone and be done. Using Stepz was helpful in tracking my progress daily. But I guess that instead of using Stepz I’m gonna move on to another. Sometimes things are better left unchanged. Why can’t things be easy. 😩 The only reason I’m giving you 4⭐️ is because of how useful Stepz use to be. Now it’s a 1 ⭐️ nobody wants to pay for something they’ve been getting for free. Plus the issues stated above. So bye bye this app.
More help than I thought it would be.

I really really love your app it helps me to know how many steps I’ve taken and the doctor likes to make sure I get at least 10,000 steps a day. Now for weight loss I am right now going for 15,000 steps a day. Stepz tells me how close I am getting or if I’m getting there or not, but I’m not gonna reset my goal for 15,000 steps a day, I’ll leave it at 10,000 steps a day, because that’s what the doctor requires. I am 67 years old with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Over the past (3) years since I started walking my lungs have gotten about 9% improvement overall. Better than the Dr. and myself thought it would be, and I can breathe much easier. For this I thank you very much for your app.

I love Stepz. It keeps me on track to achieve my daily walking goals. If I get to the end of the day and I’m short of my goal, I’m highly motivated to get in the remainder of my steps. I find it to be accurate and the color coding makes it easy to tell where I am in reaching my goal even if I’m not wearing my reading glasses. And I appreciate the fact that I can look at daily, monthly and yearly cumulative steps. I like setting new and higher goals and sharing my progress with other walkers in my family. I have a fit bit but I find that I don’t like it as much as Stepz. And don’t use the fit bit nearly as much as I use thus app. I never leave to go walking without it. Thanks so much for designing Stepz.

Actually I didn’t realize that my wife had put this app on my phone until one day I was strolling through it and saw the icon. I clicked on it and saw that it had been keeping up a log on me. Every since that moment I have been motivated to challenge myself to do more. I truly love Stepz. Dr. M Michael B McGuire a loyal user of this app Since I’m using this app now I’m more motivated to do more walking. I’m an 100% Disabled Vetnam Veteran and a few years ago I couldn’t even walk. Now I’m able too walk I’ve been loosing weight. I was 376 pounds now I am 298. this app is motivation for me to reach my goal of 200 pounds. Everyone needs the this app App . Great little app

I’ve been using this step counter app for a year and a half. I got it to help build my stamina and motivation during a campaign to improve my health (and my dog’s). It helped me go from a slow, reluctant drag around the block to multiple avid daily walks, from one block to five miles. I even hit several seven mile days! I lost twenty pounds , and the dog lost a few too.
One month ago I received a total knee replacement. The strength and muscles I gained using Stepz allowed me to face rehabilitation with determination and quick recovery.
If you couple Stepz with a good dog and an audio book you will be on track to develop a fitness routine that will improve your life.
The most current update has been a disappointment (I gave 5 stars to the previous version). Inaccuracy is a major concern - for example: traveling to the east coast, where it is 2 hours later than where I live, Stepz will duplicate the steps I had in the original time zone (thereby doubling my steps)but parking them 2 hours later. Example, if I had walked 3450 steps at 1:00 pm in Colorado, and then flew to New Hampshire where it’s two hours later - Stepz would then duplicate my 3450 steps at 3:00. This happens consistently wherever I travel. Local issues abound as well. Unexplained increases in my daily steps will happen in clusters - where I have walked 7k on Tuesday, 6k on Wednesday, and 8k on Thursday - but two days later all three of those totals suddenly are well above 10k each.
High motivation tool
2023-09-06
by ChristmasVillage
I ‘m a 71 year old woman who has two bad knees and who finds it difficult to walk. I was also fearful of walking outside and roaming too far from my home. I recently started using the step tracker and have found it to be a wonderful motivational tool. I started by walking around the inside of my house before I ventured outside, but to my surprise, I’m almost up to walking 3 miles theses days. Now instead of obsessing about eating junk food in the evening, I obsess about making or exceeding my steps each day. I love Stepz and check it numerous times during the day. I highly recommend it to everyone but especially to older adults who need motivation to move more.
Pretty Good

It keeps track of my steps. The new updates is nice. I like it when companies update and freshen up the UI.
Stepz has bugs though. Sometimes the colors are wrong. If I reach my daily goal, sometimes the goal bar will still be orange or even red. I have to shutdown Stepz and restart it to get it correct.
Another even worse bug is when traveling across time zones, such as in a flight from one end of the country to another. On these days of travel, I will get doubled entries on the time graph, and my daily step count is doubled - so strange. On a recent trip, it doubled my step going out, and on the day of my trip back, the steps were doubled again. And now those bogus days with the doubled steps are forever in the history.
Disappointed With Updates

by Old 66 Man
When the this app App was “updated” I lost data during the conversion. Now my this app App and Apple Health App are not synchronized (steps and mileage are different). Got the updated this app version, and I like the enhancements. Information is easy to use and readily available. However, the new version still doesn’t sync with Apple Health. I’m still enjoying the this app App. I’m still not sure which App is correct this app or Apple Health. I wish both had the same number of steps and miles. Trying to determine why I have 4,300 steps getting out of the bed this morning. I rebooted my app to reset it but it didn’t. Trying to determine my next action.
Update on Stepz. It’s been very good since my last review.

I absolutely love Stepz!! I was given an Apple Watch series 3 for Christmas 2017, and I use the this app app everyday. It is extremely accurate & I enjoy the reminders & encouragement Stepz gives throughout the day to help me meet my daily fitness goals. Stepz is very easy to use and I love the graphs & different colors that make it easy to see my weekly & monthly progress. The integration with the Apple Health app is also a nice touch and makes it easy for me to share my progress with my friends & family who are keeping me accountable for my fitness goals. And you can’t beat the price...FREE!!...and there are no annoying advertisements either. I highly recommend Stepz as a necessity for anyone who wants an accurate record of their daily “this app” and fitness goals😀
Love my Fitbit surge but too many bracelets on my arms. I have a Apple Watch and want to move away from the Surge. I have been looking for apps that provide me with the info I need. this app provide me with the info I want. Uses Health Apple app for syncing steps to Stepz . It has various info you can display about your this app, how many more steps to meet your goal, calories burned, average steps over time. Long story short get this application if you want to count your steps then this is the one. One option is to see your steps without opening Stepz , shows steps much like unopened mail on the top right of the application icon. You can also use the watch dock so you can have your steps easily seen. Update: nice if Apple Watch could show your this app progress on the face of the watch.
Deleting this app
2024-12-16
by Pretty_Lane
Why are you forcing me to pay weekly for something I’ve already paid for once? Stepz used to be amazing and now I’m going to have to delete it. I refuse to pay $3 a WEEK for something my phone, and countless other apps would do for free! On top of that, I emailed you guys three times about not being able to recover my initial account and you NEVER RESPONDED. Thank goodness for my password book because i never would’ve recovered my account. And now that I’ve recovered my account, you don’t even offer the option to DELETE IT!!! so my information will just be sitting out in space for God knows how long. I wish i never downloaded this thing. Im definitely deleting it and removing it from my phone today. You should at least offer a basic option and then move up to premium for those who can afford it, but instead you want to FORCE all of us to pay for it. That’s greed.
No longer counts steps
2024-12-16
by HTD 2019
This used to be my go-to step counter app but a recent update (as others have pointed out) has made Stepz unwieldy, more difficult to use (more scrolling instead of all on one screen) and today 1.2 miles in to my walk - Stepz told me I had take 250 steps. Fortunately I had another exercise app installed that gave me an accurate count of 1.2 miles not .01 miles. A very big difference.
In closing, Stepz no longer counts steps. The developers updated this into irrelevance & missed major bugs that defeat the very purpose of Stepz. Very poor & very inconsiderate to users. One can only guess how poor the update testing was. Turning to other apps. I suggest those reading this do the same.
I see the developers to their credit are answering the many new negative reviews. To them I can only say do not forget the whole point of your app which is to count steps.
“upgrade” ruined an enjoyable app
2024-12-16
by Kisenberg
I used this app every day for about three years and enjoyed it. The upgrade ruined my experience and has made me seek a different app for counting steps. I understand that I may need to look at ads if I want to use the free version, but I am not willing to tolerate gambling ads that play with no way to exit them. Banner ads OK. Video ads or gameplay ads that play over and over again and can’t be exited without exiting Stepz ? Nope. Plus Stepz stopped counting my steps accurately. Whole days were missed. This is not acceptable and so I’m going to move onto a different app. unfortunately there is no way to export my data from this app so that is three years of walking 10,000 steps a day that is lost from my step counting history. If the subscription fee had been more reasonable, I would have subscribed and paid for Stepz . But the subscription fee is far too high for me to consider.
Annoying and inaccurate
2024-12-16
by Auntie DJ
I used Stepz for quite some time, and liked it. Then suddenly I started getting ads that popped up so fast I couldn’t push the H first even if I was poised and ready. I usually have to press the x on the as 3-5 times to get it to close. Yesterday I got a new phone and when the ads open they start playing a video with loud audio, even if my phone volume was set low. I can’t stop them without exiting and clearing Stepz . I’ve been climbing stairs a lot, and it doesn’t show. Last week one day I went up and down a staircase 15 times. A half hour later when I looked at Stepz , it said I had climbed 2 that day. I know I had more than that in my house.
Needless to say, I will delete Stepz. I wrote a complaint not too long ago, but never heard a solution and as of yesterday it is worse than before.
I’ve used Stepz for years and does what it is supposed to do. 5 stars for that. I used to be annoyed by complaints from users about advertisements in an app when they were getting an app for free, but you’ve taken annoying ads up a notch. They pop up on every screen or touch and actually stop what you are doing. Annoying is one thing, but hindrance reduces functionality. Some ads have a large no thanks button at the bottom to clear the screen and get back to what you were looking at, but most have a tiny x tucked in the upper left corner of the screen which takes multiple attempts to properly detect I am pressing it (yes, most likely my phone case in the way and fat thumbs). Reduced rating simply for this reason

I like the dashboard that shows my progress for the day and It’s easy to see a graph of my weekly steps. Color coding shows at a glance weather I’ve met my goal, I’m halfway there or less. The only thing I don’t like so much is the advertising that I have to get rid of before I can see my this app. Sometimes that’s easy and sometimes it is very difficult. There was a glitch a couple months ago where my steps were doubled for about a week. If I had 12,000 steps in the day it showed 24,000. It was obviously incorrect, but fun to look at! I’ve been using Stepz for a couple of years and that was the only time that I sell the results were inaccurate. I like Stepz.

I’ve used Stepz for years and it keeps getting better with improvements. I like that it averages out your weekly total because you can’t always have the time and opportunity to walk 10,000 steps everyday. I’m 67 and was making that goal until I couldn’t walk as much for a couple days. When I felt better, I overdid it to catch up and my body suffered because I was pacing as fast as I could to get back to an average of 10,000. The next morning I could barely get out of bed because my abdomen hurt from the extra strain. Once recovered, I lowered my goal to 7,500. I get most of my steps in by doing yard work and walking around a large city park when I’m in the city. I feel better after walking. My doctor has told me it’s the best exercise for me.

I wanted a simple app that tracked my steps, that was really all I wanted. I found that most of the apps are way more complicated than they needed to be and I found myself saying “I don’t have time for all of this.....” this app is exactly what I was looking for. It tracks my this app and it’s a very simple layout , I don’t find myself searching on the screen for “steps” or “tracker”..... the information is there and and there isn’t unnecessary complications involved that get me more frustrated than anything ...... so with no issues and the fact that I am satisfied with the content , I have no reason to go looking any further .... it’s perfect for me

As others are reporting, there seems to be no way to close ads - if I click the X in the corner they just open up in Safari and I go round in circles for a bit.

Your app doesn’t work at all!
It used to show your steps but now only shows add after add after add after add. There is no option to click out of the adds - the ONLY option is to download the gambling app or whatever other rubbish is being advertised.
The cost to sign up (without ads) is not justified.

Found a way to get rid of those Anoying apps that won’t let you get out just delete the “ APP store icon” and it greatly reduces the type of Anoying adds. Not all but the ones that remain have a seconds counter followed by an “x”
