What even is this?

This game is genuinely, heaping garbage. It’s like they got a series beloved by adults and made it into brain rotted nonsense for ADHD children. It actually makes no sense, and is laughably horrible. The fact they thought this would work just goes to show how disconnected the rich people are from real life and the desire of everyday people. I would recommend getting this game, only to briefly laugh at how bad it is and then immediately delete it upon realizing that yes— you are actually playing the game right now, it’s really so horrible I had to wonder if this was some type of mini game while the real game downloaded in the background— no, it is the game, and it is so bad that I didn’t even begin to assume I was actually playing the finished work of an age of empires game, then realized in a sort of comedic horror that I’ve been waiting months for what I can only describe as manifest garbage, a wasted time I spent on the toilet that I could have scrolled through memes instead. 0/10.

Congratulations, Age of Empires Mobile, for officially winning the award for the absolute worst game ever made. It’s a masterpiece in how to ruin both your time and your wallet simultaneously. Pay-to-win? Oh, it’s more like ‘pay-to-even-breathe.’ The developers have clearly put more effort into draining your bank account than into the gameplay. Honestly, the people responsible for this disaster should hang their heads in shame—or better yet, face a courtroom for crimes against the gaming community. As for the company behind it, they’ve managed to take the beloved Age of Empires legacy and shred it into unrecognizable pieces, then doused it with microtransactions for good measure. It’s like they actively tried to make the game as joyless and exploitative as possible. Age of Empires? More like Age of Nightmares. Save yourself the headache (and the cash)—this game is an insult to the genre and a waste of everyone’s time. Just when you thought gaming couldn’t sink any lower, here comes Age of Empires Mobile to prove you wrong.

An Insult to the Franchise

2024-10-23

Remember AoE. Sending hordes of villagers to tear down forests. Building rows of farms after that. Ripping through stone and gold mines. Carefully constructing your walls and defenses. Placing military buildings deep in your town in case of attack. Sending villagers to start backup towns in case you lose. Or closer to better resources or geographical advantages. Actually seeing the troops you trained and positioning them around the map. Focusing your town on rapid military development or a producing powerhouse.

This game has none of that.

It is literally the same world pvp base game that you see in Facebook ads. The zombie ones and the ones with anime girls. Exact same game, new skin. Same world map structure. Search for npc’s to attack. Send one of your three squads led by hero’s you recruit with tickets at a tavern. Three resources to choose from. In which any other player can attack you on a resource tile and kill your troops. Speed ups. Resource package items. Heroes have star levels you upgrade to. Skills you level up.

Nothing original about this game. Nothing nostalgic from the franchise we all know.

Using the name Age of Empires is a scam to trick older adults that were fans of the game way back when. This is a money grab. It is pay to win. And a bunch of idiots will dump thousands anyways.

Don't get if expecting AOE. It’s more like Lord’s mobile and Clash of Kings. Very disappointed.

2024-10-24

TLDR: The beginning felt like a mobile game ad—clustered menu. I was excited but quickly lost interest. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone expecting AOE. Feels very basic

I was excited that Age of Empires was coming to mobile. When I got the notification that it came out and I saw that it’s free. I was disappointed. Because I knew it was going to be nothing like AOE. But I still tried it. In the first mission, you get to control people. I was super excited. But that excitement quickly faded when I got to the building part of the game. The graphics are fantastic! But this game feels like all the other boring strategy games.

Nothing like the old game

2024-10-25

There is so much potential with age of empires to do a civilization building moba type game where you only pay for skins and style. This has way to many things going on for no reason at all. To many things to monitor for no real reason. I grew up playing age of empires and was excited to see if this beat expectations, but it is sadly just another sim game where you build and wait and honestly the civilization franchise has done a much better job. Sad though it would be really cool to see old age of empires mechanics ported to a new competitive game model like civilization has maintained. Old age of empire mechanics were really fun. I don’t think we will see it ported to the phone though.

A gacha money grab unlike the game we all loved

2024-10-26

People loved AOE because it was a real-time strategy game with open-world mechanics and a particular flexible strategic play style. This is none of that. Any dev who played the original games should know that that’s what people came to expect from AOE.

This disaster is simply a beautifully skinned Gacha money grab with black hat gamification techniques (I.e., pay to speed up this upgrade timer!). Had this been a real-time strategy game like the original, with similar mechanics, people would have happily paid a higher ticket price with DLC add-ons, and this would have undoubtedly become one of the most popular games on iOS.

But perhaps what fans wanted and would have paid more for is not as profitable in this day and age of endless micro-transactions to justify, and cloning and skinning what everyone else is doing was easier.

This game is NOT the Age of Empires you remember. This is a capital ‘M’ Mobile game.

2024-10-27

My one star rating has to do with my nostalgia and love for the computer game franchise Age of Empires. The only similarities between this game and the RTS classic is the sound effects and the building names.

I was hoping for some attempt as mobile RTS game with elements of history. This game has neither.

In this game you will be waiting real time minutes and hours to collect resources, build prescribed buildings and create units from a home base hub. You will then go out and participate in a mediocre Auto-Battler using created units and “Heroes.” You then return to your home base to upgrade all manor of units heroes and abilities. As you might imagine these upgrade start out massive but slowly turn into a grind.

Heroes and their corresponding civilizations can be bought with real money. There isn’t much reason to however as the combat (this auto-battler) is boring and unrefined. Besides that you will be waiting around literal hours in your hub.

Unless you are interested in a capital ‘M’ Mobile game or proudly wear the badge of, “Whale” I would avoid this game and spend your time doing something better.

Not like the pc

2024-10-28

AOE on pc was one of the greatest pc games of my childhood. AOE mobile is one of the biggest disappointments of my adult life. The graphics, music and sound effects of the mobile game give it the classic AOE feel, however the gameplay is quite different from the originals. There is very little strategy involved in building your city, battling and conquering new lands. You mostly throw masses of troops at enemy troops and the biggest army wins. There are also exorbitant wait times for upgrades unless of course you pay for them. They had the opportunity to make a classic mobile game, however I feel like they threw out most of the best elements and added things like in app purchases, girl heroes and a phantasy in attempt to appeal to modern audiences.

Just awful. They destroyed the franchise

2024-10-29

Some of the most iconic and enjoyable traits of the aoe franchise is diving into history (and a historically accurate plot) and the strategy that comes with controlling and directing your units. This game has done away with both these traits. The plot is pure fantasy. The protagonists (if not purely fictional like province Josephine) confront each other when in real life they never even lived remotely at the same time the same time (John of arc vs Attila the Hun). The troops are lumped in together with a commander and cannot be controlled. The battles are simply won by who has the most hit points. No strategy involved. The game is entirely driven by clicking on a a few upgrade and battle buttons and paying to speed up contractions. 1 star for graphics. Game is garbage.

Grew up playing AoEII & III… and I am disappointed…

2024-10-30

I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this game. I grew up playing AoE II & III and was hopeful that this would be similar to those games/experiences. A mobile game where there was, finally, a chance for some real strategy when it comes to city & army building…

However, what we have here is another inevitable pay to win “city builder” game where you have control over building placement… but research and upgrades have training wheels where everyone ultimately has the same thing/plays the same way. It honestly feels like an exact replica of “Viking Rise” with a larger city.

Collect heroes of different tiers, but if you want good heroes you’ll have to pay for it.

This isn’t Age of Empires, this is a generic mobile “MMO/strategy” game.

And let me tell you. When you can’t build walls or cities however you want… and upgrading buildings or completing research is hampered by a specific path set up by the devs…

It doesn’t feel anything like Age of Empires outside of the name and some of the sound effects.

This is just the next
Game of Thrones: Conquest
State of Survival
Viking Rise
(And dozens more)

Build city, collect heroes, pay to stay shielded and get the good stuff… and then quit playing after a month when the whales start razing everyone to the ground.

Not like the old days (honest review)

2024-10-31

Age of empires was my childhood. It was basic and straightforward: build, attack, get attacked, rebuild, win.

This new game seems to have been build by the average iPhone app company and doesn’t seem like anyone played age of empires before development.

The gameplay has 100s of different buttons and actions that can be done which might be your thing, but it’s not age of empires. The fact that once you advance in age you start off with buildings already built is a punch in the face. The one thing I want to do is build and you do it for me?! Come on. Game looks beautiful which is why it’s more of a let down. It had so much potential but the addition of so many options takes away from the depth of what old age of empires provided

Not really AoE

2024-11-01

Went in hoping it was actually going to be a mobile version of AoE. Phones these days could easily run 1 or 2. Anyway…. I only played for a couple hours. It’s another CoC remake, possibly with some more granular battle mechanics. Just don’t go in thinking it’s going to be an RTS, cause you’ll be sorely disappointed as I was.

That being said, it’s decently well made from what I can tell. Graphics are good, collectible heroes, no obvious glitches, everything is fairly straightforward. So I’m gonna give it a 3 star rating. -1 for ads suggesting it’s “Classic Age of Empires on Mobile” which is misleading. -1 for lack of originality and/or ANOTHER game of the exact same play style as CoC.

Rts style

2024-11-02

Im really not a huge fan of these type of rts styles which is a shame because I had high hopes for this game coming to the phone. I really feel it wouldn’t be too difficult to implement true AOE style gaming onto a phone since it was done on xbox. On the other hand it seems a lot like rise of kingdoms and clash of clans which I used to love so if thats your thing its a great game and is the reason its not a 1 star from me. Still like I said Im not a huge fan of waiting 25 minutes to upgrade buildings and stuff because then it turns into days and weeks and I don't have that kind of time any more.

Meh…

2024-11-03

NOTE TO DEVELOPER: ALL WE WANTED WAS AN UPDATED VERSION OF THE COMPUTER GAME WE KNOW, LOVE AND MISS! I was expecting or at least hoping for more like the original computer games, but it’s just a direct copy of most other games out there already. I have played for about 30 minutes and am very disappointed. The tutorial never ends. The golden arrow pointing at all the directing and what to build and how never stops. Idk of this is a glitch or just the game. Very annoying. Like I said I am only 30 minutes into the game and it has given me all the military and resources free as I progress leaving the military facilities to train the troops pointless. I have won 5 hero’s in the 30 minutes. I’m not that good, the game just gave me some without telling me and I won another really fast. There is zero skill or strategy so far. I’ll keep
Playing and hope it gets better. But, as I stated in the beginning, because it is a direct copy of other strategy games already on the market, I can’t see myself sticking with it.

The Lack of African Representation

2024-11-04

While Age of Empires Mobile brings a classic strategy experience, it’s disappointing to see yet again a lack of African representation at launch. Although Cleopatra may be added later, Africa has so much more to offer. Figures like Mansa Musa, one of the richest rulers in history; Queen Nzinga, a brilliant military strategist; and Shaka Zulu, who revolutionized warfare, are all absent from the game.

This exclusion of African leaders feels like a continuation of the historical bias that minimizes Africa’s contributions to global history. The focus on European and Asian civilizations overlooks the rich legacies of African empires. By neglecting these incredible figures, the game misses a chance to truly be inclusive and represent the diversity of world history.

I hope future updates bring African leaders into the spotlight, allowing players to engage with the powerful legacies Africa has contributed to the world. #RepresentationMatters #this app

A Solid Experience, But Where’s the Multiplayer?

2024-11-05

I tried Age of Empires Mobile, and I’ve got to say, it’s really good. The game does a great job of bringing the classic Age of Empires feel to mobile without losing the strategic depth. Building up your empire, gathering resources, and managing your army all feel smooth and engaging, especially for a mobile game.

That said, I’m wondering if there will be some kind of multiplayer mode in the future. The single-player experience is fun, but being able to go head-to-head or team up with other players would really take it to the next level. Hopefully, that’s coming soon!

Honest Review

2024-11-06

Haven’t played that much since the game came out yesterday but already at first glance this is NOT the AoE experience you will remember from the computers, think more CoC or Forge of Empires where you build a static kingdom with the ability to freely place buildings, you have build timers, etc, not sure how long I will stay invested in this game because of this. I thought this was going to be more like a ported version almost, similar to the computer game but slightly different enough for mobile compatibility. Nope not it. Will keep playing for now

Off to a great start

2024-11-07

I have played several of this style of game in the past and this is a fresh start. I’ve played several hours so far today and haven’t experienced any bugs; the game is running great! I’m a big fan of the graphics of this game and the overall play style. As in most mobile games, there is a pay element if you want to give yourself a boost, but AOE needs to pay the bills and keep updates coming so no problems there. Lots of “free” items so far and plenty of free ways to gather resources and items that are needed to advance. There are plenty of different ways to keep busy in this game so give it a download and try it out for yourself.

I like it!

2024-11-08

Definitely brings me back to when I was very young and used to watch my older cousins play age of empires on their computer in their kitchen. It’s funny how back in the day we liked to just watch people play now kids cry because they want to be the only ones playing! lol either way, very fun but I’m still figuring it out because there are so many features! I wish I would be able to change my governer and customize their appearance.

I loved it

2024-11-09

I have always loved playing the older versions of the game and really wanted to play this, but I put the wrong age at the beginning which makes it to where I will open it, and it will tall me I am to young and then kick me back to the Home Screen. Apple had this dumb update that makes it to where when you try to delete something then it will basically keep in your library leading to me not being able to just reset the process. I will still rate this game high since I love the versions of the game and have not had a chance to play this one.
