3.9 out of 5
Constant issues and frequently out of date

The single least reliable application I have had the displeasure of using

Will consistently disconnect in the background, crash, hang, generally unpleasant and bad. If you don’t turn on lazy connections you get terrible battery issues, if you do you get disconnected after your phone is off for more than 15 minutes and routes will just sometimes not work when reconnecting.

They do not keep the runtime version up to date and is consistently well behind all other platforms. Sometimes I wonder if it’s completely unmaintained.

No Landscape Support? No On-Demand? No Shortcut Integration?

Being unable to use NetBirdP2PVPN in landscape on iPad is really inexcusable at this point in time.

Also needs to add on-demand VPN for both iOS and iPadOS, and/or at minimum integrate into Shortcuts to allow users to create an on-demand VPN themselves. The WG app has this natively, as does Tailscale. Not sure why NetBird is falling behind here.

The single star is for NetBirdP2PVPN , not the service itself, which is solid. Unfortunately, NetBirdP2PVPN hampers the ability to enjoy the service.

Change server does not work

When changing the server, I get an error that it’s an invalid server address, but the netbird page loads in the browser on the same phone. And yes, I made sure to type in correctly.

Invalid signup?

Not impressed with the idiotic sign up process that doesn’t work. If they can’t even make that work, I can only imagine how secure their platform is.

Ugh

I swear to God in the worst way at the worst moments when I remember to check NetBirdP2PVPN is off not connected and leaving me vulnerable what’s the point!!!

Don’t work DNS

The site's DNS doesn't work, it just won't open. I have clients on Android, Linux, Windows, Macos but this problem is only on iOS VPN just doesn’t work

App won’t even work

As stated app simply doesn’t work at all. I tried on my work android phone and that worked right away after login. This one will successfully log in then go back and be in a connecting state indefinitely. Very disappointing I was hype to try but this is an immediate red flag

Promising

Gave it a test run and played around with the admin portal and its quite easy to set up but its not for me just yet. My entire internal infrastructure and dns configurations are mainly ipv6 with no real management over ipv4 except for dual stack for external access. If I were to use netbird in its current state then I’d have to work backwards and configure ipv4 statics and reservations for my servers and dns which Im not too keen on doing so I’ll have to pass for now. I’ll revisit it whenever ipv6 is supported.

Horizontal Screen Suppport

NetBirdP2PVPN needs to support iPad in landscape mode.

Also when tapping to copy hostnames please provide an option to copy the ip address as well.

No iPad app

Please develop proper iPad app. Login process is not as smooth as Tailscale.

A Good Start

As of now, custom DNS servers behind peer relays are not resolving. If you rely on local DNS resolution for internal services your out of luck. Another annoyance is the lack of any logs for the wiregaurd connection making it basically impossible to troubleshoot if the connection isn’t working for whatever reason.

All in all a good start as the basic functionality is working for peer to peer connections

UPDATE: 3/25/25 Custom DNS is functional, albeit not 100% of the time. I often have to disconnect and reconnect for resolution to continue or start working. Sometimes resolution won't work at all for a few minutes after first connecting. Still no logs either which is a bummer.

Rapidly becoming one of the best.

I’ve been using the self hosted version for a few months now and this team is squashing bugs very quickly! I had a different wire guard solution setup as a backup, but I haven’t had to use that in a month and a half.

I rarely write reviews, but I felt the need to give these guys some credit.

It works :)

It works good. One suggestion would be to allow turning on and off entire Networks. For example, if I want to ensure that I’m connected to k8s dev network, but not to prod network then turning on / off entire Networks would be a handy feature.

Best VPN out there

Self hosting both management server and all of my family devices and it works flawlessly, DNS queries sometimes leak through during startup which caches wrong resolution on mac client but its not a big issue.

Excellent VPN and Mesh

I have tried the cloud and self-hosted version both are amazing especially the peer authentication on cloud version.

Keep it up, Thanks.

dns server

The custom DNS server is not available and cannot resolve private DNS
