Gas buddy has/ had a similar safe driving feature, but it doesn’t need to be always on
This is an invasion of privacy deleted.
And if someone can’t click when it requests you for location when using then they shouldn’t be driving to begin with.
So giving an answer it’s so you don’t forget, is giving forgetful people a pass to be in the middle of nowhere when they don’t know where they’re going.
I was not able to get past the privacy settings for AARPSafeTrip. The developer collects quite a bit of personal information along with usage data to sell to other parties. The captcha algorithm failed several times when I tried to establish my privacy settings relating to that data. Not being able to even get past that I am deleting AARPSafeTrip . Seems to be very poorly written and does not favor user preferences which attempt to reign in distributing personal data. If you don’t mind having all your personal data commoditized, then this could be an okay app. I, however, was never able to even experience AARPSafeTrip core function.
I just want to respond to a response about a review and the answer the developer gave. It was concerning privacy issues about having to have the location setting on your phone set in always on instead of while using. Here is the response: "In order to properly track your vehicle's speed and movement, AARP SafeTrip needs access to sensors in your phone that allow it to see your phone's location. We reason we ask for access to location "all the time" is so AARPSafeTrip user doesn't have to remember to open AARPSafeTrip and grant AARP SafeTrip location access before every trip." My response to that is, if you can build an app with this technology, cave you simply have a notification sent to the user when they are starting to use AARPSafeTrip to turn location to always on? Seems kind of like a lame excuse to me.
As for the response below, that app is continuously running in your phone detecting everywhere you go whether you are walking are driving with someone else. This is a MAJOR privacy issue. It sounds like you the developer needs to get on top of this and quit making excuses for it.
I really thought this was a smart app and after downloading it, creating a profile, and accepting the numerous permissions I thought I was set. Only problem was, the first two trips I was a passenger and AARPSafeTrip treated it as if I was driving. I decided that I would change the location setting to “while using AARPSafeTrip ” but when I attempted to open it that way, AARPSafeTrip wouldn’t open until I returned to settings and changed it back to “always”. Not much point tracking a trip as a passenger as I often use my phone in the car when I’m not driving.
habits with companies? How does a "free" app pay for the business operations ? Is AARPSafeTrip just another "free" driving app that is sharing peoples private driving habits with insurance companies. Common in Asia but never in America. I knoticed AARPSafeTrip collects more information than it needs to collect. It does not need to be collecting the phone's information but it does. And I guess that private phone identification information is collected so the data is easier to give to affiliates which in turn sell it to companies. Similar to how banks violate privacy even they claim they do not
Speed limits in AARPSafeTrip are not current they have almost all the roads I travel at 25 MPH all of them that I have been dinged for speeding are 45. I have tried customer service and they are no help if they can’t ‘verify’ so if the map databases haven’t been on a road since they built the road or had the limit at a different level it’s sorry and all they say is to lie and tell AARPSafeTrip that I’m not the driver. This isn’t designed very well so I’m going to ignore it from now on
I looked forward to using the AARP driving app but its evaluations always seemed suspect. No matter how much I attempted to change my habits—especially with cornering and acceleration—it continued to ding me. I finally got disgusted and deleted AARPSafeTrip .
I have been using AARPSafeTrip for about a month and a half now. It has greatly helped me improve my driving skills. The one main reason I give it three stars is because I have come across numerous areas where they have had the speed limit listed incorrectly. I have written numerous times and been found to be correct on what the speed limit actually is as opposed to what I was nicked for in the rating. i’m trying to use it as a gauge to see whether I want to activate it with my insurance company but the inaccuracy makes it difficult for me to determine.
I like the option of tracking my driving, but AARPSafeTrip wants to have location on always. This means that when my husband is driving I get hit for his bad habits. It also means I get hit for using my phone. There needs to be an option in AARPSafeTrip to not track when a passenger.
Using AARPSafeTrip has been pretty eye-opening for me. It’s definitely made me more aware of how much I was using my phone while in the car. I’ve cut down considerably since I started using Safetrip.
I always thought I was a safe driver, but AARPSafeTrip has helped highlight areas for improvement. I’m more aware of things like phone use and hard acceleration / braking since installing SafeTrip.
Great app! In an age where information helps shape who we are, I appreciate an app that helps put into context, with data, how i'm driving. Better driving habits are my goal, and I'm hoping that with the help of AARP and their SafeTrip app, i'll get there.
I have AARPSafeTrip set to automatic so tat I don’t have to think about turning it on before I drive. For me, this is a great feature but others may find it “too big brother”. In any event, I just drive as I do and AARPSafeTrip gives me constructive criticism but so far, I’m doing great!
I knew about insurance company apps like this, but I was happy to find one that didn’t tie my driving to my premiums. SafeTrip is really helping me focus on my driving skills and I love to see the improvements I’m making. My wife and I even have a little competition going to see who’s the safer driver.
I have been using AARPSafeTrip for over a year and have definitely improved my driving- the scores can prove it. I really like using my rewards points I earn to bid in high value gift cards. Great way to play along and improve my driving.
If you use AARPSafeTrip and consistently review what it tells you about your driving, your sting will improve. It’s not perfect because it cannot know everything about every circumstance but by using AARPSafeTrip, you will think about your driving habits and try to improve upon them. It’s just human nature.
Love AARPSafeTrip as my ‘coach’ to being a better driver. I appreciate the reminder that I was speeding or accelerating or braking too fast. I will admit that I’ve become so hooked on the “scores” I get, that when, for safety, I have to brake or accelerate quickly I feel badly that I’ll miss out on my ‘points.’ Had my father add it to his phone so we could review his driving together.
AARPSafeTrip works well. I like the fact that this data is not shared. I review my trips and can see where I made a potentially less than safe maneuver and know why I did it. I’d like to see the point (little dot on the map) where I made my mistake (speeding, braking etc) made larger so it easier to see the location.
This application (while privately tracking vehicle movement using the phones data) allows each individual to review their driving performance (and judgement) on any trip monitored. Just a quick ‘check-up’ tool on how you are doing in safety critical areas, identifying what might need some ‘extra’ attention. A great way to ‘stay safe out there’. :{)
Is an excellent Telematics application to monitor your driving. It is the best application I have used compared to many of the insurance carriers. Gives you an honest evaluation and does a great job on tracking your trips. Very easy to use.
