not worth one star not a good look for BCBS

I am sure that anyone that works at BCBS and needs help within CareFirst is secretly using another insurance!
I do all my business on my phone and have successfully ordered deliveries and all times of the day, any day of the week at any time of the year for food service companies from large national/International vendors, small boutique vendors, local & national produce vendors and even a made to order vendor - NEVER have I had as much headaches as when using this sad excuse of an “app” from such a world wide company as BCBS!
It could be that this “this app” is a smaller unit in Maryland and not able to be part of the behemoth’s web management system but I doubt it. It absolutely makes no sense how utterly nonsensical, useless & unnerving this stinky mess is to use…
Sadly we are tied to this “insurance” choice for one year or until the idiot that decided this one was better and more accomodating than Cigna hears enough angry users’ calls demanding better use of hard earned monthly pay for insurance.
Meanwhile, what a piece of nothing is this “app.”

CareFirst Lacks Care and Integrity with This App

Using CareFirst is incredibly difficult. It’s slow, laggy, and full of glitches. Even basic tasks like typing into a text box are impossible, as the screen will jump or not respond at all. And that’s just to get into CareFirst . Every time I try to view my benefits, ID cards, or any feature, in short it says, this is not available right now or please contact our team. But when I try to contact this app, even that is inaccessible—forms and emails are unavailable, and calls aren’t being taken. It feels intentionally designed to deter users from understanding or utilizing their benefits.

Given the profitability of this app is, this feels like a psychological tactic to frustrate users. On top of that, I’m concerned about HIPAA compliance. If CareFirst is this buggy, how secure is it for handling sensitive information? Even though Okta is integrated, the lack of seriousness from developers makes me question its legitimacy. CareFirst needs major improvements, starting with integrity and security.

Wow a horrible user experience

CareFirst is crap. You’d think the amount of money going to the insurance company they can make a decent app. When you need it to work simply IT DOESNT. I can order a chick-Fil-a sandwich faster on my phone then I can pull up my insurance information with CareFirst. I had high hopes that I wouldn’t need to carry the stupid plastic cards around anymore. But CareFirst always has some internal update to do, doesn’t tie into your password manager and is just a pain to use. Really goes to show they don’t care. I’ve resorted into taking a picture of the insurance card and saving it to my notes and sharing it with family members.

This app needs WORK

I’m a new customer who has been trying to use CareFirst for a couple weeks now and it doesn’t seem to do anything I need it to. I mainly downloaded it so I could use the facial ID feature which never works even though I always check the box when I login to enable it. Also, anytime I’m actively using CareFirst it times out on me randomly thus prompting me to put in my password 5+ times before I’m able to finish a task. I’ve tried refreshing CareFirst and restarting my phone but that doesn’t seem to be the issue. I rarely leave reviews but this needed to be said. I really hope this app invests more money into their app configuration.. SOON.

Impressively bad

It’s hard to believe any app could be this poor in 2024. I’m impressed with the effort it must take to consistently have your app be the worst app of all time.

It’s challenging to login. When you click on the password field the screen jumps down to the bottom of the page so you can’t see whether you’re typing on the right field. If you use a password manager it doesn’t connect to this app’s app. If you’re trying to paste your password it’s incredibly challenging when the page won’t let you paste.

Every time you try to email your member ID card to a provider, CareFirst crashes and you have to go back to the login screen.

Horrible app

This is, without a doubt, one of the worst apps I’ve encountered in recent years. The user interface is abysmal in every possible way. The load times are excessively high, making the experience frustrating. It’s evident that CareFirst ignores fundamental UI design principles, with 9 out of 10 aspects poorly implemented. I’m baffled at what the digital team is doing to improve CareFirst because, after using it for over a year, I’ve seen no meaningful progress. The only noticeable change is the redesigned login screen, which is poorly executed—who thought it was a good idea to use dark text on a dark background? This lack of attention to detail is unacceptable.

Can’t use! Keeps crashing!

CareFirst is impossible to use!! When I try to put my password in, the screen scrolls away. It won’t save my password so I play this game every single time I have to log in. When I need to open anything ;-‘ EOB) it makes me log in again. I never have gotten to see an actual EOB nor anything else because CareFirst just crashes over and over and over again. I used to think the issue was with my phone, but now I have the most up to date phone and CareFirst is completely up to date, and I still can’t log in to my own insurance policy. This is criminal. You are keeping your customers from accessing their own healthcare information.

You’d think they could afford to hire app developers

Not only does this company show their lack of dedication and care for the people who use their service to get quality health care (which can be life or death) by gouging users with ridiculous clauses and costs and rules that ruin people’s lives, but it CareFirst is the icing on the cake to their blatant disregard to their customers.

CareFirst is trash. You click things that don’t work. Links are tiny. The interface is trash. The menus don’t make sense.

You’d think with all the money we are paying them to provide their service, and clearly it doesn’t go to lowering health care costs, that they could take maybe allocate a couple thousand bucks to someone who knows how to make an app.

Deserves zero stars

I want to start by saying I work for another insurance company and see how they run their apps and website and this app truly has the worst one. CareFirst is full of bugs and you cannot log in half the time. Logging in via mobile website never works as there is always a scripting error. CareFirst is slow, glitchy, and don’t work as it should. It is 2023 and we have the best app developers in the world at our disposal- an insurance company of this magnitude should never think this is acceptable. It has been over a year since it’s worked properly and no one seems to care. Don’t waste your time with CareFirst- just long in with your desktop as that is the only way to get in.

Consistently Unusuable

Frequently crashes upon login. When it does work, both the mobile app and the browser-based interface seem designed to be confusing. CareFirst struggles to allow password managers to autofill, requiring me to copy and past my info. However, long pressing on the text input boxes will jump to the bottom of the screen. Making even the login process tedious. Not a highly technical user, but CareFirst is fundamentally flawed, and as others have mentioned, seems to have gotten worse over time. It does indeed lead one to feel that this app is set on confusing and frustrating their insurance customers into giving up and calling to wait on hold instead.

Consistently crashes, cannot navigate between options, awful design!

A DISASTER of an app. 8 out of 10 times I select a choice, I get an error message or CareFirst crashes (no it’s not my connectivity or that I don’t know how to use a computer). The desktop site is as bad as CareFirst , and has the same dysfunctions. None of the menu choices reliably navigate to the topic/site, auto pay details won’t save, search for benefits and physicians will work 1/10 of the time, no option to navigate to the last screen but rather you’ll be sent back to the Home screen (and start your inquiry over again), etc. Also, the only contact options are email and phone. A company like this in this industry needs to have live chat.

Garbage and Possibly Hacked

CareFirst is hot garbage. I have used the online site (including its mobile variant) for years and thought I’d try CareFirst . Big mistake.

Upon opening CareFirst it immediately goes into some kind of self-check, and declares that CareFirst needs updating to continue. I literally just downloaded it so that can’t be right, but whatever, I tap “OK” since it’s the only option. It appears to download something, then crashes. Lovely.

I restart CareFirst , no warnings this time, it just presents a progress bar titled “Please wait while we retrieve your information”, which appears to hang because I gave it 15 minutes before giving up on it. Bear in mind, I HAVEN’T ENTERED ANY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION YET. So unless it’s scanning my e-mails, trying to hack my this app account information on its own, THERE IS NO INFORMATION TO RETRIEVE.

So I delete CareFirst , re-download it. Still with the endlessly hung “Retrieving” screen. Now I’m deleting it for good.

Either the developers are not aware that an app shouldn’t update itself outside CareFirst Store, or CareFirst has been hacked, or it lies about what it is doing. Any of those options are a huge red flag. I’d recommend just using the excellent web portal.

Seriously, where is all my money going?

I don’t normally write negative reviews of apps, even if I don’t like them, but this one is an exception. It is so bad that I have to leave some feedback. It is clearly just a wrapper for the website but doesn’t even work as well. It’s constantly updating for no good reason. Then, when I try to login, the screen just goes haywire when I try to paste my password from my password manager. Finally, if I can even make it past the text verification, half the time CareFirst just shows me a blank screen. There’s simply no excuse for a company making this much money to have such a bad a mobile experience. Even when I don’t want to use the website on my computer to get insurance stuff done, I still have to.

Edit: months later I still can’t click the password field without the entire screen scrolling to the bottom. How is this an ongoing issue?! Changing to 1*

CareFirst is infuriating. The thing that irritates me the most is if you click in the password field twice (I’m pasting a password from a secure place) the entire login page scrolls straight to the bottom. This happens every single time and I’ve noticed it happening for months so it’s not a new bug. Also why do I have to call. Just let me click a button to tell a dr I want to be their patient. It’s nearly 2025. I shouldn’t have to pick up the phone outside of CareFirst and call them. I can literally have a car delivered without talking to a human, but I can’t sign up for a dr.

Why bother

Why does this app even have an app?! There are years worth of complaints at this point all echoing the same sentiments about how glitchy CareFirst is. The mobile website is not any better. I cannot even get past the login screen. I verify it’s me with the 2 factor authentication and then CareFirst instantly crashes. I attempt to use the website and get an error message saying it’s having issues gathering my information. “Please try again later or call technical support if this problem continues.” This problem has been continuing for literal years…I doubt my single call to some outsourced IT help desk is going to magically fix this train wreck of an app. CareFirst should just be taken down all together because it’s completely useless and has been for a long time.

HOW IS THIS APP SO BAD?!

I seriously cannot understand how such a huge health company has such a terrible app. The updates never fix the problem, find a doctor never loads, navigating CareFirst is like driving in a foreign country on the other side of the road without a steering wheel. Nothing is intuitive. This is not a user-friendly app, and there are few apps I’ve ever used that were this terrible. for how expensive health insurance is and how challenging access is for so many, this is inexcusable.

Constant crashing. Currently can’t upload a receipt from files or camera, OR take a pic of the receipt via CareFirst , for HSA or HIA reimbursement, without it crashing. Try this on the website instead? Nope. Can’t even get in (with correct user name and password) without error messages. How is this acceptable in 2023? Get with the program, this app.

Used to poorly functioning apps, but this is next level bad

CareFirst is stunningly bad. Truly. It’s so bad, so unusable it makes worry that the company providing it actually has my sensitive personal information. Like, if they’re ok with have such a spectacular failure of technology out there that users can actually see, what other completely malfunctioning tech are they ok with behind the scenes?! I can’t believe they let this thing stay in CareFirst Store. I mean, the bar here is not high, I’m just looking for things like a functional login.

It’s hard because I need a way to find in-network doctors and such and trying to navigate a health insurance company is already brutal enough, CareFirst makes doing that work impossible. CareFirst does one thing extremely well though… it completely represents why people hate insurance companies. Broken, difficult to use and endlessly frustrating.

Garbage app!

My job insurance is with this company, can’t speak on the insurance but all I know is it’s costly and no where near blue cross, which I miss by the way. At least that app had Face ID for logging in, this garbage app, I got to enter my password each and every time after CareFirst stupid update, CareFirst updates every time u open it, open it 50 x’s a day, it updates 50x’s not like it’s an actual update b/c app is still useless. I tried to add my ID card to apple wallet wouldn’t you know, even that feature doesn’t work! App is is basically taking up valuable space on my iPhone and I’m bout to delete it, useless garbage of an iPhone app for insurance!

Glitchy, sticky, not user friendly, and unreliable

I think it’s kind of crazy that a giant like this app can’t put together a skilled development team to roll out changes and fix the issues within CareFirst. I’ve been part of this app since November 2017, with a brief switch for a few months to US Family Health Plan. For a year and a half, CareFirst has not changed or gotten better. Issues I’ve always had include inability to log in (I can’t even access my medical information because I physically cannot get in), links not working, formulary documents unable to download or unavailable to access, slow load times, sticky buttons, and an unfriendly user design overall. There are so many simple fixes that a skilled developer could quickly make to improve CareFirst, yet for at least a year, in my own experience, nothing has been done. There are so many skilled developers who could improve CareFirst immensely, find them and hire them.

Maybe app works, cause website sure doesn’t

Just downloaded app ONLY because need way to access insurance. Portal online is out of order. It’s weekend so phone line to customer service is closed down, and business hours are generally taken up by work, so can’t call in during m-f 9-5, too busy with work. Last ditch effort to access this employer sponsored medical care. So far the experience has been beyond disappointing. I’m kind of disgusted with the service yet hopeful for seeing an improvement… Thus far the experience has been enough to want to end participation with the insurance.
