Banking with SMBC is astonishingly bad. They are so afraid of online banking that they make you jump over several hurdles to do any one thing. Want to make a transfer? You’ll need to accept a voice call and use DTMF tones to verify your login. (If you’re using a phone that doesn’t support DTMF, you’ll need to visit a tone generator web site and play DTMF sounds loudly over speaker.) Then when you make the transfer, you’ll have to do it again. And then you’ll need to put in your one-time password. It’s so terrible. The irony is that their banking login credentials are insanely weak (a 4-digit PIN). Why not strengthen that and save everyone the trouble of actually using online banking services? Aside from all that, they charge a fee to transfer to other banks, and don’t even process it until the next business day. Meanwhile SBI, Suruga and some others charge no fees, and process almost immediately. Stay away from SMBC unless it’s your only option (for example as a lender). Worst banking experience I have ever had.

Constantly taking unnecessary steps. Also they won’t give me a company account after having a company for over a year and showing I’ve paid taxes. The banking systems in japan is one of the most corrupt things I’ve ever seen.
