For some inexplicable reasons, AirNZ forces transcontinental travellers to purchase separate tickets which include AKL as the only transit point, while explicitly disallowing those who purchase such tickets from boarding in North American departure points such as LAX. If this is it, the travellers would have no complaints... However, ther are further confusing and otherwise contradicting communications being circulated via internet “word of mouth”, purportedly from some sub-branch of AirNZ reservations department. The bottomline is AirNZ has done a woeful job in communicating a clear and consistent message to travellers via a uniform customer-facing channel. The refusal to let passengers who have been forced by AirNZ to buu two separate tickets for the same itinerary is particularly baffling, especially given NZ government’s granting of transit visa regardless of the number of tickets present for the transit flight via AKL.

While my flight was not bad and I would typically have given a 5 star review I was very disappointed to learned that my husband and I had each been charged almost $500 American dollars each for changing our flight. We were in New Zealand on a dream vacation when our travel agent notified us that Air New Zealand was canceling many flights due to corona virus and he recommended we return home right away. We agreed to return and he changed our flights accordingly. Shame on you Air New Zealand- there should not have been such a hefty charge based on the ongoing worldwide crisis!

Is it my imagination but I’ve been trying for 2 days to book a multi-city, international flight to/from the USA using both the Air NZ website and app. Either way, it is extremely difficult to navigate. I’m going to instead book the flight on United (with codeshare to Air NZ) as I know for sure that multi-stop bookings are allowed. I now remember trying to do this last year as well and was equally disappointed that it was impossible to do...
