The Koren Tefilla App Reviews

Published by on 2023-08-09

About: The Koren Tefilla App includes our siddur in three nusaḥim: Sefaradim (Edot
Mizraḥ), Sefarad and Ashkenaz. The siddur was designed in accordance with
the design elements which were created by Eliyahu Koren and which have been
passed down at Koren Publishers over the last 60 years.

About The Koren Tefilla App

Among these tools you will find audio preparations for Tefilla from different creators, commentary by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and a feature allowing one to display the Tefilla word by word or sentence by sentence which enhances one’s focus.

Beyond this we have also added various content geared towards aiding one in preparation for Tefilla, learning about and reflecting on Tefilla as well as creating a davening experience which is not possible using a printed book.

The Koren Tefilla App includes our siddur in three nusaḥim: Sefaradim (Edot Mizraḥ), Sefarad and Ashkenaz.

In addition, one may apply different tefilla modes such as davening with a minyan, ḥazzan mode, simḥa and aveilut as well as geographic location.

The siddur was designed in accordance with the design elements which were created by Eliyahu Koren and which have been passed down at Koren Publishers over the last 60 years.

The siddur is of course a smart siddur and therefore displays the appropriate tefillot based on the annual cycle.

We have done our best to maintain these guidelines while making the necessary changes considering the platform.

There are other settings and features not mentioned here and we encourage you to go ahead and explore these.

We are looking forward to hearing any and all feedback from you.

On its way…

I’ve been trying it for a couple of weeks. For my part I say it’s best experienced on the largest font size, where you have just a few words on screen and can focus better and appreciate the Koren letterforms (i understand that in any review of a koren product you’re supposed to mention the font). It’s new and there are bugs - my beracha mei’ein shalosh is a blank screen, and TheKorenTefillaApp put candle lighting at the same time as shekiah. It would also be helpful if they had an explainer of where their zemanim are coming from. The slider that you use to speed through the parts of the tefilot could be more specific. Finally, the “praying with a minyan” setting is too clever by half, which is also a koren habit. People want to see the words of Kaddish, not just know that they’re answering amen at some point. Still I wouldn’t spend the time reviewing it if I didn’t think it was going to improve. And because I know they care I’ll point out that the dagesh in the taf is sometimes nicely centered and sometimes drifts to the right. Haven’t yet figured out the reason for that one.

Can’t purchase translations or commentary

As the title says, I can’t purchase an English translation or commentary. When I try, TheKorenTefillaApp tells me that it’s only available for a particular nusach, and asks me if I’d like to switch to that nusach. I say yes *even though that nusach is already selected*, but nothing happens. No purchase option ever appears.

An iPad-optimized version of TheKorenTefillaApp would also be good.

I love the idea of TheKorenTefillaApp. It’s beautiful to look at and simple to use, but it needs work.

Good!

Not great, but a beautiful Siddur and much better than others I’ve used. Font is nice and large and everything works seamlessly.
However, there’s some kind of display issue - whenever I open קריאת שמע שעל המטה instead of saying וקשרתם לאות the ו doesn’t display and it shows up קשרתם לאות.
Thanks!

Mon / Thur mix ups

It seems like on Mon & Thur after the long tachanun the first part of the taking out of the Sefer Torah comes on but the next part is Acheinu kol Bais….
Then on tues and Friday the brich shmay and the Irish comes on.
Please adjust this bug.

Excited for improvement

Thai app has a beautiful easy to use interface, and all the prayers you could need. My one request is audio to go along with the prayers to help when you are learning or are unfamiliar. And/or transliteration, but audio is the priority.

Good Start

It's a good start but the Birkat HaShanim is missing the bracha for Adot HaMizrach. Please make an update when possible.

Still lacking

I tried this last Purim, and then again today - this Purim. It has improved - last time it didn't include al hanissim or birchos hamegillah. It's still lacking. Hazarat hashatz isn't integrated, and even though I ordered the translation/commentary it doesn't appear and there's no restore button to put them on my wife's phone. But it's handy.
