AFN Now Reviews

Saw AFNNow advertised on a navy times article and got excited for my guys that enjoy the NFL. After getting it set up I quickly realized that the quality is consistent 2001 flip phone potatoe quality and cannot be changed. Not only that but I got a literal half second of audio in 30 minutes and several attempts to get something to look half decent. If you say you need to be on WIFI I was, it’s didn’t help one bit. You’re better off finding a buddy that would not be denied his sports fix than even trying to use AFNNow. Great idea but terrible execution.

Don’t waste your time with the current version of AFNNow!

After downloading and registering I discovered, like many others, that AFNNow doesn’t work correctly most of the time and by some miracle when it does work the only options for “live” TV are AFN Sports and Sports 2. After contacting Defense Media Activity, I learned the news channel(s) are only available to those who reside on a military installation overseas. Not a great decision Defense Media Activity! You do understand that not all of your “customers” have the ability to live on a military installation? There are a lot of us that live on the economy.

Also I couldn’t get an answer on why the other AFN channels (Prime Atlantic, Prime Pacific, Movies, etc.) are not even an option to watch “live”. I thought AFNNow was supposed to be equivalent to the programming offered via the AFN Decoder? I guess not.

Why won’t Defense Media Activity listen to their customers and fix the issues?

I’ve only attempted to open one session, so the error tells me I am not allowed any sessions. I was hopeful this would work. There are enough other networks that do this successfully, that I thought AFN would be able to pull it off. The ads for AFNNow on AFN are heavy. They should have made sure it worked!

I was excited to maybe be able to stream football in Korea with AFNNow. No live shows or anything. I had access the the Barnyard movie last week and now they took that away. When i boot AFNNow its completely empty. Cant watch anything. I would have preferred to not have gotten my hopes up at all, but thats the military for you. Lol

I have attempted multiple times since arriving in Korea and not once has AFNNow allowed me to register. I tried in on IPhone, laptop, IPad, and the TV’s. Always get to the end and an “Unexpected error” stops it. I try it at least once a month and we are going on 8 months now. Oh well would be nice if it worked. I guess…

I installes AFNNow and tried to log in. A GUI popped up but didn’t allow me to enter any information before disappearing. Then I received the error message “Session Limit Exceeded.” How? I haven’t even logged in! The FAQ says unlimited devices can have AFNNow but only 4 simultaneous devices can use it. This is the only device I’m trying to log into and use.

You can tell that it is made for Military service members because it is one of the worst apps I have ever used. It will sign me out every day on my TV so I have to re-authenticate on my phone every time and my phone app doesn’t even work. I am in Okinawa Japan and it randomly decided it didn’t work anymore because I’m “not overseas” ridiculous smh

Registered successfully, confirmed email, logged in…nothing. Try to login again-session limit exceeded window pops up. I should have read the reviews first instead of wasting my time. It was a nice thought, though. After reading the reviews, the developer tells you to reach out for support-why is that the solution? It should work from the download. I’m not going to spend $20 on an international call.

Good thing first: replays of events seem to work okay but will time you out & you have to re-approve you TV to keep watching.
Live streaming of sports or shows doesn’t work. Try to watch anything live, like Memorial Day Races, and all you get is “Something Went Wrong”. In fact, try to watch anything on the Live schedule and that’s what you get. Having a functional app has got to be MUCH cheaper than providing hardware to everyone that is eligible. Yet, in an age of smart TVs & phones, this replay app is all we get.

I just don’t understand why there have been so many reviews discussing the problems and the bugs haven’t been fixed 115 should be more than enough to attempt to fix it. You have 115 people that have made a sacrifice to give up the things people find trivial like live tv, American sports, American movies. Then YOU offer them a small bit of home just to get their hopes up knowing that it doesn’t work well at all …… might as well not have even made AFNNow if you aren’t going to update problems.

We’re in TLF off base in Japan, having just moved out of our off base house here. I’m pretty sure we used the AFN Now app occasionally on our FireTv Stick. I downloaded it to my IPad hoping to watch it here. Nope. When I search for the shows I watched using a VPN in my off-base house, I get an error message that that content isn’t available in my location. There is next to nothing available via AFNNow .

And why is it in portrait mode? Why not landscape? It’s irritating to try and navigate the log in and menu sideways.

I recently got an AppleTV and AFNNow is so bad. It still doesn’t show AFN Prime Atlantic or Pacific and navigating AFNNow is confusing. I can see what is streaming live in the guide but I’m not sure how to actually watch. It doesn’t work like the Roku app where you select a channel and then it highlights the play icon. The guide is a joke with very little useful info. What’s showing on the “Food and Cooking Lifestyle” channel? Food and Cooking Programming. That’s all you get. You have to tune in, somehow, to see what’s actually on. I’m not sure why there’s a guide at all if it doesn’t tell you what’s on.

AFNNow itself is okay. I do like how they have a variety of options to watch. But I don’t link how I can’t use an Apple cable to try and watch any shows on my Tv instead of my phone, even screen sharing onto my Tv doesn’t work. Other screening apps are capable of doing it but AFNNow.

My overall rating is Mehhh, since we don’t have many options we use AFNNow via fire stick the best we can. There are only 4 channels listed which is disappointing compared to the AFN TV box which has many more and when the live streams work expect the broadcast to randomly freeze with no option to back out or restart broadcast. The only fix is to restart app. I watch AFN NOW mostly for live sports and the most frustrating part of AFNNow is that the schedule only lists the subject of what is playing but not the actual teams playing. I have to guess as to what teams are playing as the schedule just say “NFL, NBA” etc.

There is a ton of room for improvement. If they would just make AFNNow mirror the architecture of the AFN TV box with detailed schedule and matching channels I would be happy.

This has happened three times now. After the first commercial break, the movie starts again from the beginning. When trying to fast forward to find where I was in the movie it appears part of the movie is missing. Makes it impossible to watch movies. This does not seem to be happening for TV shows.

Thank you for your response. I finally got AFNNow to work but it seems it is not designed for iPad. Trying to negotiate it sideways is not easy. Is there any way you can update AFNNow so that it will appear in landscape mode as most people use their iPad in landscape mode? Also, is sports the only live channels you plan on introducing? Thanks kindly.

App works most of the time. Volume stops from time-to-time but overall it has worked. Can’t give it more than a three star due to the tv guide not telling you exactly what sports event is coming on.

AFNNow performs well and the interface is pretty intuitive. The live news is actually the AFN news channel, so lots of cable opinion shows on repeat. Hopefully the full launch will include some access to the actual networks.

My biggest wish is for the NFL to allow live streaming on AFNNow , but thus may be too much to hope for since they have their own streaming apps.

It was a bit challenging to get working but the support via email and phone was super helpful in getting my comms up! Now I am good to go and watching some excellent programming!

I love AFNNow. It has a few issues but I see them fixing things all the time. Cannot beat free NFL and other sports. They have HBO shows too. Such a great FREE app. Excellent response to feedback.
