Great Premise, not so great execution

I just recently downloaded FocusGenie , and I really wanted to love it. However, there’s quite a few bugs that need to be worked out first. FocusGenie frequently resets your timer if your phone closes, it doesn’t let you update the task you complete, additionally, it doesn’t explain the UI very well, other than showing you the features. I’ll continue using FocusGenie for the rest of the month since I’ve been charged for it already, however I will most likely be deleting it if the bugs aren’t worked out yet. I’ve sent an email to the team so I’m hopeful the bugs can be fixed soon because this seems like it has the potential to be a great tool which is why I downloaded it.

Not worth it.

First of all, my negative reviews keep disappearing from FocusGenie Store. What’s up with that?

FocusGenie has such good PR and I’ve enjoyed the creator’s social media content. FocusGenie was hyped for about a year, going to give us ADHDers everything to manage our lives. In fact, the functionality is just a to do list that doesn’t carry over from day to day.

The learning modules are simplistic.

The promised three day free trial is actually only two days. Your charged at the beginning of the third day.

Worst, I’ve contacted support every possible way and never got a response.

Lastly, app hasn’t been updated for awhile so where is all the promised new content?

Every time I see FocusGenie on my phone it get a little feeling of having been taken advantage of.

Good in concept - Bugs to work out

I LOVE the concept and have been following the release date on Instagram. There are just too many bugs to make this functional.

Examples: sleep time won’t save (fail to save error), focus level doesn’t save (keeps defaulting to another option), wasn’t able to click to-dos as completed (nothing happened) and then couldn’t carry them over to the following date.

I know a lot of time and energy went into this and look forward to using once the bugs have been resolved.

Subscription

It is kind of evil to invent an app for people with ADHD with a subscription that automatically renews after the free trial. I didn’t find that FocusGenie works for my brain, it might work for others, but realizing that I forgot to cancel my trial (likely part of it was because of my ADHD) and having to pay a month didn’t make me feel any better about my ADHD.

Needs work - too many bugs

Love the concept. Too many issues right away. Timer doesn’t notify you’ve switch from work to break and vice versa. Can’t leave FocusGenie or timer turns off. Can’t check off to do list without timer ( which isn’t reliable) would love to see I completed tasks carry over to following day and have a way to set up daily/weekly/monthly tasks as well as one offs for specific days. Would love to be able to upload journal prompts from photos or word.

Love the app, but quite buggy

I really appreciate the time and intention that has gone into developing FocusGenie. If it worked as intended it would be such a helpful tool in my day to day life managing my adhd. However, there are quite a few bugs. The to do list doesn’t allow you to check things as complete. The to do list has also frozen, not allowing my to add items to the list unless I completely close FocusGenie and reopen it. When you finish a learning module, you get an error message saying it doesn’t register that you’ve finished. The focus tracker where you can record the status of several adhd management factors doesn’t register what I input and I get an error message saying it failed to update. Very excited about FocusGenie, but the number of bugs makes it a lot less helpful than anticipated. The highlight of FocusGenie has been the learning feature. The modules provided are so intuitive to what folks diagnosed late (41 years old for me!) would want to learn and the info is super digestible.

Pretty Disappointed

I was quite excited to try FocusGenie, unfortunately it has really failed to live up to what I was hoping for. As it’s a new app, I wouldn’t mind the bugs others have pointed out, however with such a short trial period (frankly, way too short even without the bugs), I feel like I’m paying to beta test it. I so think the educational content is quite good and well presented for us adhd types. Outside of that, there is very little to recommend in this. A very rudimentary to do list, a timer, and a scant selection of focus music provide nothing that is not easy to find and free.

I would really love to see (and what I was really hoping for and am yet to find) is a much more robust to-do list/task manager and calendar designed for people with adhd. Having something like that integrated with the educational content and focus/study tools would make for a heck of a powerful adhd management app.

Excited to see it grow. . .

I love Dr. Sasha, so I definitely won’t give up on Focus Genie. It’s just not really helpful right now. Paid for the year and it hasn’t worked and when it does it’s glitchy. I think there is a lot of room for growth and I am glad to be trying it now and have the ability to provide feedback so it can serve the purpose it was created for. But for now, it’s not really improving my ADHD experience.

Potential, but not there yet

I was really excited about FocusGenie and do feel like I can see the vision, but it feels like there are some core features that are missing that should have been part of the first iteration. Like others have mentioned, there’s no way to build daily routines into the task list or sync with your calendar, so it just creates another place to look and requires time every day to go in and build out the list. Also, I love the idea of the focus tracker, but there’s no notification or reminder to complete it and you can’t complete it for previous days.

I would also love to see integration with other apps as FocusGenie matures:
-Importing tasks from Apple Reminders (where my partner or Siri will add things to a shared list for me when I remember them while busy) or Outlook (where my work tasks live)
-Integration with Apple Health to pull sleep/water/medication/exercise data that are already tracked and then used to compare with focus tracking trends

Overall, I do think there’s a lot of potential for FocusGenie to be very helpful, but until it can be more of a comprehensive way to track things, it will likely be an app that I remember to use periodically.

Some feedback

As someone with ADHD who is also a therapist specializing in ADHD I’m so grateful for people like Dr. Hamdani for creating tools to make mental things physical. FocusGenie has some cool stuff like daily mood and symptom tracking and the psycho-educational lessons are awesome. I also love the task timer function. I’ve had some challenges though:

the task timer doesn’t make a sound when it’s time to take a break. The push notifications weren’t working.

Tasks can’t be set to repeat

Reword questions so they aren’t yes or no. For example “how are you different from your siblings?” instead of “are you different from your siblings?”

The “mark as read” thing is very small - make it a button.

When I used the timer:

When I switched over to another app like messages, the study buddy image disappeared. Also once FocusGenie closed and my timer reset. Study buddy also froze regularly. Timer is inaccurate if you switch over to another app.

Thanks for considering my feedback!

Coming back and trying again

Came back to try again, and still experiencing app ending bugs.

My main beef now revolves around the Pomo/focus timer.

Resets if you are in another app for too long, then you age to reset the entire thing.

Doesn’t notify or keep the timer active unless you stay in FocusGenie .

Completely defeating the purpose of it being a phone app.

Tried to use this for work and constantly had to reset the timer ..

Why hasn’t this been fixed after almost 6 months past release ?

Something to come back to

It’s only been a few days. But I find metals actually coming back to FocusGenie. It’s different. The whole idea of tokens and gamifying learning, the water tracking, the prompted journal entries that get you out of your head. It’s enjoyable to use.

Pretty Great!

So far I do like FocusGenie , it’s clearly created by someone who understands ADD/ADHD! My only complaint would be the fonts are so tiny it’s hard to read sometimes. Wish I could log in from a computer instead of my Apple phone, for a bigger screen. I hope they fix this, it’s a game changer.

Love the concept

I love the concept, but I wish the trial period was more than 3 days, or that a free version could be supported by apps. I use so many apps to help me manage day to day life that it really adds up when they all start requiring subscriptions.

Helpful

I like FocusGenie but there are some items that would be helpful like duplicating tasks from day to day instead of having to type them in manually or by microphone over and over.

Nice app, could use a couple tweaks

Really like FocusGenie, it’s very pared down and easy to use. The only two things I would suggest is the ability to make custom categories, and ability to sync to a google or iPhone calendar.

notifications

i love FocusGenie a lot its really helped me but the one down side is that there aren't notifications for the to do list bc i forget to check FocusGenie so its not worth paying for it when i forget to use it - i do love how FocusGenie works and everything else about it i just need to get a bunch of reminders for my to do list so that it actually gets finished

Love this app

Love that I don’t feel overwhelmed using FocusGenie! 😃 Some other apps for ADHD seems overly saturated with options and tasks. This one is simple, stress-free, and helpful with tracking my day-to-day symptoms and moods. The journal questions are fun and though-provoking. Simple timer to set tasks to. If there are tasks that I don’t complete one day, I can move them to the following day. The body-doubling feature is helpful when doing shorter tasks or during Pomodoro timed tasks. Thank you Dr. Hamdani for creating FocusGenie! 🤍

if you have adhd, get this app!!!

As an adult with adhd, initiating tasks has been one of the biggest hurdles for me. I downloaded FocusGenie and was able to set the timer to very low time intervals that got me out of a serious rut and task paralysis I have been dealing with. For example, I set it to 4 minutes of studying and 2 minutes of rest because it’s such a small task that my brain goes “okay, I can do this.” Then I started increasing the time to get more done. Thank you for FocusGenie Dr. Hamdani, and for understanding people with adhd.

Download this app if you have ADHD

The lessons are helpful and I love that they link to research publications.
The to do list is awesome.
The timer is clutch to not getting caught in the time blindness hyperfocus trap.
I often forget to use the focus tracking, but the trends from the times I remember are helpful.
I love FocusGenie!
