To good to be true

As a mini tour player I’ve used some of the top 3d swing technology with coaches, where you have to wear full suits that track and analyze every part of your swing or systems that use cameras 360 degrees all around you to capture all aspects of your swing. To think a single front facing camera can get you that kind of data or close to it seemed impossible but amazing and groundbreaking if could actually do that. So after a month of testing it out I can say unfortunately it is too good to be true. Now this other equipment cost upwards of $10,000 so to think a simple app could do the same for $15 or $20 a month is pure fantasy. It’s cool that’s for sure being able to look at your swing from every angle but the big problem is the data just isn’t accurate. I tested different hip tilt angles and being extremely open or closed at impact and would regularly get conflicting data compared to high end tech. The problem with that is it can potentially do more harm then good when it’s telling you your hips need to be more open or closed at impact when you don’t need to be. The app is definitely cool and I’m sure someday we will have the technology to make that $10,000 technology accessible to everyone on their phone with a simple app but as of right now that just doesn’t exist

Disrupting Instruction

Sportsbox has come along way since beta, and their app is really helpful during lessons. Measuring body data really highlights and emphasizes students’ areas of improvements. As a coach, the app has helped me:

- Validate my thesis on the students “why” (I.e why are they slicing, hooking, extending, etc.)
- Identify specific areas of opportunity
- Develop a path for improvement in step-by-step fashion vs. trying to solve the entire swing

They’re also creating a more social feel to the app which helps develop rapport with your students to do constant check-ins, measure and analyze swings on the fly, which helps create efficiency for both student and teacher.

For students/consumers, it’s really cool to see the different views/angles of your swing, such as above view (to measure turn numbers like opening pelvis and chest).

App development is hard, so releasing new features takes time and research. The app can be buggy and crash, but they are building really cool features on their roadmap such as their DTL view (measuring thrust e.g. early extension and hand depth). They have all the knowledgeable people on the team to execute but it takes time.

This does not replace Trackman, Foresight, etc. but body measurement and Sportsbox is supplemental to building a long lasting swing. Highly recommend!

Advantages of using Sportsbox

I’ve used 2D and 3D analysis teaching golf since 1980. I’ve never found any system as complete and easy to use as Sportsbox.

The way I’ve used 3D is to measure efficiency not proficiency. Golf can be played well even if the player isn’t the most efficient but once a degree of proficiency is achieved, the next step is to become more efficient. This is where Sportsbox comes in. It’s so simple to use! You just take a 2D film. Which we have used for eons and Sportsbox converts it to a 3D avatar. Then you can look at all or just a select few indicators and see their relationship to tour margins. The indicators go beyond 6D! This comparison points you directly to the inefficiencies needed to be improved!

It’s so quick and easy to use, that I include it in most of my lessons!
It’s neat to see all the options. You can film either face on or down the line to see certain things such as upper body location, lower body location, swing arcs, shaft angles from all views such as down the line, face on, above, behind, etc.

I highly recommend Sportsbox to advanced teachers and those who want to become advanced. AI is here to stay!
