Tably doesn’t fit on the screen and scrolling in not an option. I can’t get to the ‘upload photo’ button and the live capture button is only half visible. Can’t keep kitty’s attention long enough to get a reliable reading, but cats will be cats. Only reading I do get is Unhappy. My wife tried it on me and I’m happy. Go figure. Back to the drawing board, Sylvester. At least the price was right.

I tried Tably on my cat and no matter his expression or position it says he’s discontent when he clearly is not. I thought this would be helpful but it’s saying he’s in distress even when he’s fully stretched out and asleep in soft beds with the best look on his face. I don’t think I can rely on Tably.

I just tried Tably on my Birman cat who had begged to crawl on my lap. He was sleeping soundly but Tably said 5 times that he was “ Not Happy”. Seems it’s the only answer they have. If he wasn’t happy, then I don’t know what happy and content is!
by Mejdn1
Of course he is unhappy as long as it takes to keep his face in photo until app reads 100%. Fail

I’m confused about how Tably can be touted as a real way to tell if your cat is happy. Maybe they’re just joking and it’s supposed to be for fun? For one there’s no nuance — it’s just content or discontent. Second, it disproportionately reads discontent and says if you get that a lot contact your vet. Lol can you imagine calling your vet like “this facial recognition app for cats says Fluffy is discontent, can I bring him in?” Third, it’s nearly impossible to get a good shot of your pet’s face b/c, as others have said and I also experienced, it takes too long to register the face — there’s no way a cat is gonna sit and stare at your phone that long. I hate to be rude but sorry, not sorry: Tably is dumb and I feel like it was a waste to download it.

How long exactly reasonably do you expect to care to be still for your program to actually pick up the face? Cats as you know do not have a penchant for wanting to stand still long enough for a camera to be in their face. Under normal and bright light and I tried doing it from a distance before up close- this just doesn’t work yet but I like the concept idea. Unless it’s working though, it doesn’t deserve any space in my library.

It gives you very basic results. I expected more features. For example: The ability to add your cats information and track their moods over time. Or at the very least a simple history of snaps you have taken.

My car was purring and content, and it read unhappy. Was off 5/6 tries.

To get my cat into a correctly lit position for the reader will annoy my cat and defeat the purpose.

Apparently, my cat has Permanent Stank Face. Always get the red meaning she is discontent or ill.
I was able to get it to work quite regularly. I stand in front of my cat, not right up in her face taking the scan at an angle. Light behind me. You just need to play with it a bit and you find the position that works best and it reads pretty quickly.
Good for fun, but I wouldn’t worry about your cat if you keep getting red.

As an experienced general practice veterinarian with a special interest in feline medicine and behavior ( not a boarded specialist I can appreciate the idea behind Tably. Cats are notorious for hiding any sign of pain or distress. So any tool that will raise awareness to feline discomfort is welcome. However, I found the execution of Tably to be unreliable. When testing on my own cats at home I got strange results. A cat that was clearly in a relaxed body and facial pose was repeated labeled as “being in distress”. I also got the same result in another cat that was resting with an alert but calm expression. Part of this could be related to the difficulty I had in framing the cats’ faces in Tably . Anyone who has cats knows how uncooperative they can be when their silly humans do things to them. But even when I got a good view the results were the same. No matter what I was seeing with my trained eye, Tably indicated that they were “having a bad day”.

I was excited to see an app like this as a veterinarian. I would like to be able to have a resource to give to owners, many of whom fail to recognize pain in their cats at home. As a feline crazy vet and someone who has grown up around cats their expressions can be quite subtle. So I decided to take my app for a test drive on my own cat to see what would happen.
Unfortunately disappointingly Tably only gives one response (discontent) in a variety of situations: playful, content -getting affection, asleep, observant. So unfortunately Tably for me doesn’t work.
I really like the idea of it though and feel that if works could be extremely useful in veterinary medicine and really hope my response helps to fix any glitches.

I love the idea of Tably especially since I have 3 male cats and they have distinct personalities. That said they love each other and are purring love bugs with me. Tably though always reads that the cats are unhappy even when they aren’t. So maybe they need to rework this…cute idea but execution stinks

App seems to work. It claimed my cat was discontent and once Tably was finished doing its work my cat hit me. Tably also froze twice before I could get a reading.
I wish Tably could give me more info about what is happening behind the scenes, I want to be able to recognize my cats emotions without pulling out my phone.

This would be awesome if my cat would stop moving his head long enough for it to read his face! 🤣 Some cats get fidgety when you point a phone at them. 🤣
Tried doing it to my other cat while he was sleeping and it told me he was unhappy. Not sure about that because he was sleeping, so??
Looking forward to watching Tably improve; it has potential.

Listen, the naysayers are mad that this isn’t as fast as point and snap, but this is literally brand-new technology. No one is doing animal face recognition, let alone trying to tie cats to their pain/emotions. It’s a big ask of any research project.
It has a lot of room to grow with the speed, and being able to recognize dark cats’ faces, sure. Think of how powerful this can be once it gets better.

I find it funny a lot of the reviewers are complaining and giving poor reviews because their cats wont hold still long enough for Tably to work properly. Doesn’t sound like a developer problem. How about trying Tably when you’re cat is chillin? If that doesn’t work… try patience. I’m giving Tably four stars because I don’t fully believe it’s really reading a true emotion. But if it really is, all the better and pretend I have it five stars.

Tably is a great idea, and is fun.
It still needs some work when it comes to detecting cats in darker settings and cats with medium to dark colored fur. Since it takes awhile to analyze the cat’s face, my cats both get annoyed with having the phone in their face for a long period of time. Both my cats are medium gray and it’s a big issue for them.
When I do a reading in bright light it works great and doesn’t take nearly as long, or intrude on my cats activities.
Making Tably more light sensitive is an important improvement for the long term survival of Tably .

the update fixed the live capture a lot! it used to not detect my cats face for 5 minutes but now it’s faster! thank you developers for actually listening to us

Tably is Goated

This is something I wanted myself long time but never worked for it. I am a computer vision data scientist and have been a part of diverse software developer teams. In my case Tably right now shows one type of outcome on my cat. Not content before feeding and not content after feeding. While she was running and playing after eating.

The most obvious issue is the lack of instructions. How do you properly frame your cat for Tably ? How far away or close should I be? And how many “samples” do I need to take before Tably becomes accurate?
Unfortunately, the authors of Tably leave the users to figure it out on their own. And when you get it wrong Tably freezes. It’s rather unfriendly design.

I thought I’d try this. What a hoot!! I’ve had my cats since they were kittens so pretty easy to read their moods. Neither of them appreciate a phone shoved in their face so yes, they look peeved. Deleting Tably now since its really not telling me anything I don’t already know.
by Isscc99
Tried it on four of my cats. Worked for the kitten who I got to look at the camera for long enough while distracting wit a toy. Apparently she’s a happy girl. Harder with the long haired ones, one who was definitely giving me his happy face got discontented result and if you have to keep trying to get them to look at the camera that seems to be the default. I wonder if you could amend your app to use a series of photos with the AI so the result would be less likely to be affected by bugging the cats to look at your device. Also think there is more work to be done for darker or longer furred cats.

Tably was very helpful and I like using it on my cats. The only hard part is getting your cat to sit still. I don’t understand why people are saying this is a bad app. I hope you like it and thanks.

Tably works most of the time. If it is not working for you, we recommend you excersise some patience and retry later or Contact Support.
Tably analyzes a picture of your cat’s face and uses a clinically validated grimace scale to assess if your cat is having a good day or may be hiding a potential health issue.
Less accurate for cats with traits including Brachycephalic like Persian and Himalayan and some dolichocephalic like Abyssinian, Siamese, and Sphynx.
For example, cats tend to hide their symptoms of pain to avoid looking defenseless.
Less accurate with cats that have darker facial features.
