Surprising Every Step of the Way

I tricked some relatives into getting me the Liebherr Excavator for a major holiday fully expecting either a smarter than average Power Functions or dumber than an average Mindstorms experience. I also expected a lot of Bluetooth headaches.

What I got was nothing short of phenomenal. Connections were flawless and painless. Firmware updates were transparent—if long. The model testing along the way barely hinted at what was possible. Ultimately the total package completely blindsided me, but in the best way.

LEGO is flawless: it holds your hand just enough while encouraging exploration through its achievements and rewards. Don’t like multi-touch? They’ve got you covered. While I’d rather use a text editor to program it, you can get somewhat sophisticated dragging control blocks around. And they really undersell the hardware! LEGO shows you the tilt of the model, updating in real time—but there’s no mention of an accelerometer or gravity sensor anywhere. What other things can it do? I’m certainly curious to get the other Control+ models now!

I can’t go 5 stars, though, because LEGO seems hard-coded for three this app models. But this app is all about taking things apart and making your own creations too. Yet I can’t find a way to, for example, say that “port A is the release motor on my catapult” if I disassembled the Liebherr and made a steampunk trebuchet, for example. I can rebuild my this app bricks, but not LEGO , I guess.

Great, needs work

I got the top gear rally car as a gift and had a super smooth time connecting with LEGO . I found the calibration super useful and the manual transmission fun to use. I did have a little problem with the gyro control though, it seemed like the sensitivity was very iffy sometimes I would have to turn my phone all the way to portait mode for a turn and other times it felt like a small bump would make the car turn a lot.

One last thing is that control+ should support custom control setups because making things into other things is what Legos all about. I think the mindstorms app is a good example of a good custom control system. I made a tank with my rally car but had to use a third party app to control it.

Thanks for your time. I hope you consider my idea.

It works, but could be better

LEGO works. You can control the this app sets with it and for the Liebherr excavator it will do calibration. As you build the set you can test the parts you’ve built.
One thing that would make LEGO better is if you could customize it more. For example, I’d like to built a motorized catapult, but you can’t customize the controls. For the Leibherr 4 of the controls for the motors have a limited range because of the pistons, which works well for the build as intended, but if you want to make your own build it can be an issue. Also, as far as I know there’s no way to make the controls ‘sticky’ so you have to hold them down.
LEGO works, but it could be better.

Unintuitive Controls

I own the new RC Buggy and was looking forward to using LEGO with it, but when I got it connected, I found the controls very difficult to use. Whenever I wish to turn the vehicle, it often times stops completely and reverses direction because my finger went down far enough to do so, since both gas and steering are on the same button. This makes the car almost unusable if you need a lot of steering. There should definitely be a toggle option to two separate controls, one for steering and one for gas, with the other fun buttons in the middle of the screen instead. Please consider this solution as I don’t want to have to return the buggy because of bad controls, of all things.

LEGO also crashes when you are in your first battle match and are losing, preventing you from getting any further.

Really well made, bad controls

First of all, LEGO is great, simple, easy to use, it links up to the this app hub EXTREMELY easy. this app has really done well with making using LEGO and the this app together almost flawless in my experience. The only problem is that the controls for using the buggy is extremely hard to use. Having one joystick that controls all movement is hard, please for the love of all legos at least add the option to have two joysticks to control the buggy.

Basically I’m a 27 year old who wants the option for more control and less sound effect buttons and I’m taking two stars because it really does take away a major portion of the experience in my opinion. The this app set gets a 5 star!

This is sooo cool

this app thout of everything. Im sure theyve thout of even costome vehicle controles n stuff too but they havent added q blank vehicle slot from the vehicle choice list in LEGO . Id much like to see this so id be able to mess around with a vehicle of my own design from my phone. Overall i love the capability of my off-road Mercedes truck. Its the only one in my technic controle+ collection but now id like to build my own car or truck. Maby with more parts and maby a 5 speed transmission or something. The limits are endless with this app

LEGO Love

My son and I collect LEGOs. The RC this app was fun to build and even more fun to play with. We are going to get another one so we can race them. There are other this app vehicles that can be controlled by LEGO and we will be getting those as well. So far the buggy has been more fun than the Rally car we got for Christmas. I wholeheartedly recommend getting the buggy.

Swipe to change controls is a bad idea.

For the most part LEGO works well for using the 4x4 truck. No connection issues. But the swipe to change from regular driving controls to overhead is SUPER annoying. The swipe to switch is too similar to the inputs required to drive the the truck. If my thumbs miss the controls just slightly It interprets my input as a swipe and switches to the overhead control. Really really annoying. Just make it a button.

You asked me for my rating, so here it is.

The controls for the 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader are counter-intuitive. Driving forward/back is on the right, and steering is on the left, which is the opposite of how every other remote control car works (including the this app Crawler from 2012).

LEGO crashes often, and it takes quite a while to load.

The steering is glitchy. It sometimes steers the car without any input (although this problem exists with other apps as well, so this is most likely an issue with the Technic hub, not LEGO itself).

And finally, the thing that made me write this review: LEGO interrupted me while I was controlling the car and asked me to rate LEGO . I have In-App Ratings & Reviews turned off in Settings, so not only is this super annoying, but it’s also against Apple’s guidelines. LEGO should be removed from LEGO Store until this app removes this.

Confusion

If your Rally Car is not connecting to LEGO , it may be that you did not insert the 6 batteries required. I encountered this problem. In the engine, underneath, there is a battery compartment. Take out the battery compartment and flip it over to reveal the two sides that should hold 3 double A batteries each. Hope this helps.

Kids who love technology

I think this is a pretty good way to think about technology. So whoever created this should be pretty happy because instead of just sitting around all day you can play with this thing. In fact I’m playing it right now and I think it’s pretty good that but it’s not a Five star and for all of you kids who love technology I suggest this for you.

Buggy is fast

I bought 2 of this remote controlled legos. The buggy is very cool and fast but for some reason the race car STIG is not running well, i have already double checkef everything and it is still running slow

By

Very fun, but can be buggy.

It’s very fun to control your creation using your phone, and the extra sound effects makes it much more realistic. One problem is that sometimes when I’m using LEGO for like 10-15 minutes the game crashes and resets all my progress back to when I started playing that day. But other that that it’s a very fun app.

Lego Needs Physical Controller

LEGO is neat and offers a lot of of functionality. It’s not ideal for all models as the touch controllers are not always as responsive as you would expect or layout is not logical.

These models costs a lot of money and it’s long overdue for real control. Relying on virtual apps makes me concerned for the longevity of the investment. If this app stops supporting LEGO or the Bluetooth protocol changes in a way that makes it incompatible - your investment is now a brick.

Steering

Everything runs well however would be better if it had a secondary joystick or a different knob for turns. Like other RC they a joystick that goes forward and back and another that goes left and right. Other than that all is as it should be. I was missing a piece tho that connect the side guard rail. It isn’t like this app to have missing parts

By

Off-Road Buggy

The interface for the RC Buggy makes it super difficult to drive with just one toggle. I find myself running into things and not be able to drive where I want and I think if there were at least the option to have a gas pedal with a separate toggle to steer. I’m crashing into things more than actually driving and it’s becoming so frustrating I don’t want to drive it anymore, but it’s such a fun looking car that I don’t want to.

Bug Prevents Testing of Step 2

Like another reviewer, I’m experiencing and older bug that prevents me from progressing past step 2. LEGO keeps resetting the connection to the hub installed during parts set 2 (the top, second hub). Deleting and reinstalling LEGO did not fix it. I can connect and test for step 1 but not step 2. According to a search this was a bug introduced last year that was supposedly fixed. Using latest app version, iOS 13.3.1 on iPhone 11.

Great build, bad app

The build for the off road Buggy was great. But LEGO is horrible, controls and throttle on same small button? Whoever designed that needs to go back to class to learn how to design a proper control stick. They added a brake but didn’t think a “gas” pedal next to it would be a good idea? If LEGO worked better a full 5 stars would be given.

Lego technic control

I love it it’s my favorite this app set of ever had but the steering keeps coming undone so that needs to be fixed and I have to do it every day every 10 minutes Every time you pick it up at the Steering and just messes up

By

Fun app!

I’m pleased to see this app updated LEGO controls for the RC Buggy so that now the drive and steering controls can be separated for users like myself who prefer this method of control interface! The switch for this option in the controller is elegantly executed!

By

Very cool app

App has worked great for me with the Liebherr excavator. One thing I would like to see is the ability to edit your saved movements so you don’t have to start from scratch if you want to make slight changes. This is the only reason why I don’t give it 5 stars.

Problem need to be fixed

the hub/ battery box isnt connecting to Bluetooth on my phone at all, it just flashes white, when I hold it down for 10 seconds , it flashes purple and when I stop holding it, it flashes white again, why is this happening. I need to know

By

It has problems

After about a day LEGO won’t even open it worked at 1st but there are problems that really need to be fixed eventually got it to work but the this app builds could be made faster

By

One Problem

Cannot Download this app, I Deleted 6.61 GB + OFFLOADED A APP THAT I USE EVERY DAY And Still “UNABLE TO INSTALL” Please This May Be Too high if I can’t download it. I have iOS 12.? But Still Remove this Feature If Reading, I want to get good.

All I wanted was something to show me how to use this app Technic.

DEAR DEVELOPER,

THERE ARE BAD REVIEWS REGARDING CONNECTION OF THE HUB TO THE SMART DEVICE. THIS IS FOR ME TOO. IT WILL ONLY WORK FOR ABOUT A DAY AND THEN JUST STOPS CONNECTING. IT JUST GOES LIKE NORMAL AND THEN SUDDENLY AN ENDLESS LOOP OF “TURN ON THE HUB” AND “ CONNECTING, CONNECTING” THERE ARE SEVERAL REVIEWS ON THIS AND THE DEVELOPER RESPONSE WAS ALWAYS EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS TO DO IN LEGO (WHICH BY THE WAY, DOES NOT HELP) I WOULD LIKE FOR A FIX FOR THIS GLITCH OR SOMETHING. I HATE HAVONG TO REINSTALL LEGO EVERY TIME I WANT TO USE MY BIULD. NOTE IM TYPING IN CAPS BECAUSE I. AM. VERY. IRRITATED. PLEASE TAKE THIS REVIEW INTO NOTICE AND FIX THIS GLITCH AND I WILL GIVE A VERY POSITIVE REVIEW. IM BEGGING YOU this app COMPANY, PLEASE FIX THIS.

UPDATE: IVE REINSTALLED LEGO AND IT IS STILL NOT WORKING!? YOU MEAN I CANT USE IT? AFTER ALL THE WORK I PUT INTO BUILDING IT AND MODIFYING IT?! AFTER ALL THESE REVIEWS YOU STILL HAVE NOT FIXED IT. YA’LL PROBABLY JUST BOTS.

It... sort of works.

1. The drive slider is on the right, and the steering slider is on the left. This is the opposite of how a real remote is set up.

2. The steering sometimes turns all the way to one side without input. It stays that way until you give it an input.

3. The fake speedometer and tachometer. They don’t show real measurements, so why should they take up space on the screen?

4. The battery level indicator is extremely inaccurate. It is very difficult to measure battery level in alkaline batteries, so why have the (next to useless) battery level indicator?

By

Apparently nobody tested this app

After each step, the instructions ask you to test the build so far.

The person that decided that didn’t talk to the person who decided you have to hook up all of the motors to get the units to connect, so of course the tests won’t work after step 2.

Took me a while to figure that out, so hopefully this helps someone else from pulling out all of their hair. :)

It was working but now it’s not

LEGO says to press the green button and when I do it just flashes white what should I do? It was fine earlier and was very fun but what do I do?

By

Works perfectly

I’ve had no problems with this at all. It works exactly as it should on my iPhone and the Liebherr 9800 is the coolest set this app has ever released. Mind blown!

By

Good

Love LEGO . I just wish you could make custom control screens for more creativity.

By

Amazing

Everything works fine.

Build something worth my time

I wish that LEGO would let you build your own controls for the Ev3 platform. I like the commander however it really limits you. I wish that you could run all of your motors on one control pad.

On my Volvo 6x6 hauler screen/pad I can only use the steering/ front/back function. Does not allow me to raise or lower box
