Terrible app

If I could give this zero stars I would. Clay is horrendous. Simple things like importing contacts is a hassle. Asking for credit card info yet marketing it as free, can’t delete contacts without jumping to multiple views, and even simple deletion of your account.
As someone who makes a living working with software I’m appalled at how good this look while being so terrible. I’m hoping that getdex, folk, etc. will be a better testing experience because this has made me never to test out anything this team makes.

Unreliable

After bulk importing over 3000 contacts, and needing to delete 90% of them I immediately noticed how unreliable an app this app is, on both mobile and desktop. On mobile I would quickly archive contacts only to discover that the archive operation was either silently failing or taking seconds or minutes to attempt an archive before timing out or something - imagine my frustration thinking I had gone from 3000 to 2900 contacts only for the count to jump back up to 2956 because most of those operations failed. Sometimes I would see the "person archived" badge many seconds after attempting to do so.

Similarly I would try to merge or edit contacts and it only worked the first time about half the time.

Lastly on mobile it would rarely load all of my contacts - it would display a number like 600 but I could only see maybe 80 before reaching the bottom of the scroll. Randomly it would populate more but just as frequently those added contacts would disappear again as I tried to do other operations.

Very poorly designed backend, not sure they're up to the task of handling contacts in the hundreds. Not an app I will be paying for.

Pretty but useless and questionable privacy

Is it a nice looking app? Yes. Does it do anything useful? As far as I can tell in 15 minutes of exploring, no. It seems the same as Dex or CRM apps but maybe some nifty iMessage integration if you use the Mac app. To make matters worse, you can’t really tell what Clay’s features are clearly from Clay Store listing or onboarding. It’s not until after they force you to upload contacts, connect accounts etc that it becomes clear and in my case the answer is it’s not useful. Then to add insult to injury, it DOESNT HAVE A WAY TO DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT in any automated form as required by CCPA & GDPR. Instead you must manually email them which you can’t do easily you signed up using Apple ID and a scrambled email. TLDR: think twice before making an account here.

Needs to focus on core product

I really wanted Clay to work after spending a ton of time importing my contacts from many sources and emailing customer support detailed problem reports dozens of times. But still the iPhone app crashes when you add an event in a note, U.S. country codes create duplicate contacts, there’s no easy way to see upcoming recurring notifications, contacts are missing entirely, and new contacts are so slow to sync that you would have to note somewhere else anything you wanted remember about them defying the entire point of the product. Yet the team is spending their time working on pointless AI integrations and an Apple Vision app?!?

Messy and confusing

I was really hoping to like Clay but the onboarding process is frustrating and too time consuming. When linking accounts it’s all or nothing — I couldn’t figure out how to add people one by one and do a sort of personal audit of who I wanted to keep in touch with. Instead, I was inundated with birthdays and reminders of people who I’ve completely lost touch with or never really knew because they were CC’d on some email 10 years ago. AI is great but only if it’s actually useful. I can’t wait until it’s no longer just a party trick to get investors interested in a pitch deck.

Terrible

this app is super buggy and unfocused on its core promise of a personal CRM. iMessage import failed and cannot be redone. iPhone contacts are missing. It offers ZERO features around automated duplicate resolution. Do you really expect me to go through thousands of entries and resolve those manually??? This is a core feature, but apparently they invested time in developing a Vision Pro App??? I mean who cares about that? Improve your core product features before venturing into a new niche, nice to have app, no one currently cares about! Who is doing Product Management at this app? That person should be fired. Terrible experience, even though it has potential if it would actually improve stability and offer meaningful features to make this super pricey subscription worthwhile at all. Right now it even fails at basic tasks and the team seems totally unfocussed.

App isn’t working

Clay said it uploaded my contacts but nothing is there. It gave me some words I can use to search through my contacts so I clicked on one thinking it would bring up my contacts that way and it just buffered and spun. Showing my contacts were imported and what I can use to search through my contacts and gives breakdown of how many connections I’ve had over the years but no contacts ever show up.

Great idea but doesn’t work for me

I’ve been looking for a service like this for a long time. I like that you can import contacts from so many different sources (Twitter, Facebook, Contacts, etc.) but unfortunately none of the contacts end up showing up in Clay for me, even though Clay says the imports are successful. I don’t want to manually upload my contacts, so Clay is currently unusable for me.

Nice idea, poor execution

The glossy App Store teaser images look nice and sell a promising concept well, but the details in implementation are rough.

The look and feel of Clay is over designed and doesn’t always implement expected interaction patterns on iOS which can be jarring. There are multiple views where basic dismissal patterns aren’t used.

The contact importer doesn’t recognize that their backend may fail, so in order to start over, you have to “delete” your contacts in order to try again. For someone who’s more invested in this application, that’s a bit nerve wracking to try and workaround the flakey backend.

Great idea, poor execution

I had high hopes for Clay. Despite the many bugs I ran into, the features were compelling, so I fought through them (retyping deleted notes, crashing, etc.) and started using it regularly. Then one day all the settings I spent a lot of time on (which people to give me reminders for, which not to) all restarted. All of my work was gone. I reached out to support - nothing. No response. I’m so disappointed and frustrated. I paid for a year subscription and they said nothing about all the issues I ran into. Clay is more trouble than it is worth.

Almost useful

Currently it crashes when I try to archive or merge profiles. When I could archive a contact, the list goes back to the beginning--not helpful with 1,000+ contacts. Can'ts include: inability to delete contacts; jump to a particular letter of the alphabet; delete an email that was imported; import all LinkedIn data for all applicable contacts; doesn't go to the exact email that you click on to read it; inability to filter out, delete or mark content/results in the Home tab as irrelevant or inaccurate. It also doesn't handle titles/prefixes, middle initials and suffixes well.

Has potential

this app is an interesting app, and has potential. The biggest issue, as I see it, is the home screen. It’s a cluttered, useless mess. Unfortunate as this the the primary interface you typically work in. this app desperately needs prioritized actionable insights here. They also need the ability to swipe and delete/hide system messages. I’ll hang out for awhile, but if these issues aren’t rectified by the time they want to start charging me, I won’t subscribe. Particularly at $20/mo.

Very very very very buggy

Clay is very deceiving. The UI is pretty and all the features SEEM to work. For example LinkedIn does sync and WhatsApp does sync. But when you take a closer look, only SOME of your contacts sync. Even then, the synced data lags so long that you can't rely on this app to get the latest information, so you end up going to the source of data apps anyway.

I really want to recommend Clay to my friends but I just can't.

Solid

Enough technology to be helpful but not too many tools to overwhelm you. Responsive customer service and generous free program with up to 1000 contacts. It’s what I have been looking for.

Easy to operate

Clay works wonders. You just type what you need reminder of and when in the same note and it’ll record it. No need to click several tabs to set one reminder

Amazing interface

I like the user experience, seamless reminders that show up in the right time and how it keeps getting more and more useful in business contacts. CRM done well and with little need to organize everything - you just keep adding.

Amazing!

Wow, this is a gorgeous app! Was able to sync all my social media profiles and contacts from multiple places. It has already saved me time and frustration from checking in and staying in touch with my network without having to bounce around a zillion apps

Adding great new features, responsive support!

You know you have a good app when you get an annual subscription reminder and you are excited to pay it because of the value that it brings to you. I thought the cost was a bit high last year when signing up but this year, I’ve been really impressed with the speed of development and adding new features that are impactful.
