Underlying assumptions are wrong

VoiceTools will help you adjust your pitch. That’s cool, and if that’s what you want to do* then go for it.

But first, is that really your goal? Cuz I’m betting you’re after what I am: sounding more like a cis woman.

Here’s the problem... Pitch won’t do that. Many cis women have lower pitch voices. Likewise, many men have higher voices. Do you get them confused? No. That’s because the primary identifier has little if anything to do with pitch on its own and EVERYTHING to do with RESONANCE.

Actually, if we want to get technical then it’s to do with the ratio of the first resonance (R1) to the pitch. However high or low a cis-woman’s pitch (or “fundamental frequency”) is, the gap between it and their first resonance is going to be larger than a cis-man’s.

Voice apps can measure both of these and more, but for some reason most of them focus unhelpfully on pitch. MORE unhelpful is the implication apps like this one present that somehow your voice will sound more fem if you can raise your pitch. Eh. Not much, and it’s a lot of work and can actually hurt your vocal folds if strained too far too fast - a point VoiceTools makes no mention of.

I would recommend reaching out to your trans communities for resources on legit apps and freely shadowable voice lessons. I am in a few Discord servers where this is done with helpful diagrams, apps, and extraordinary vocal coaches demonstrating and giving feedback.

Great app!

I’ve been using VoiceTools for about a month now based on recommendations from Reddit and have been very impressed with its features and how helpful it’s been. It’s been a HUGE asset to my journey in combination with the other teaching resources I’m using. Anyone considering VoiceTools should definitely give it a try! I’m sure you’ll find it helpful, too!

Thank you so much to the creators for making this great app!💜

🫶🏽

Voice training can bring up so many uncomfortable feelings and conditioned beliefs about ourselves. It’s no-wonder many of us do not feel open enough to go to formal settings where we would have to be this vulnerable in front if a human. VoiceTools gives me human feedback from the privacy and safety of my own home. I’m truly appreciative; I highly recommend!

A high 3, will continue using

I got this just to play around with. I talk halfway into vocal fry range all the time, which is its own issue, but VoiceTools doesn't pick this up at all—it just shows gaps in the line. VoiceTools could be helpful in training me out of this habit, but the fact still remains that information of interest is missing. The same issue arises when I speak at the top of my range. If this omission is by design, I would like it to be togglable, as it is helpful in some ways but not always.

Dead simple done right

The most useful free voice app for me. The interface is as super simple and still covers pitch, volume, session stats, and has a time generator. frequency chart is highlighted by gender, but you can turn it off and set personal target ranges as well. The only drawback is you cannot record. you can, however, play back the most recent section at any time.

Pretty good!

The only real issue I have with VoiceTools is the Pitch tab. It’s just a little flakey on wether or not it wants to pick up/show that I’ve spoken. My dysphoria appreciates that you can set your target Hz/ turn off gender markers in settings. I really like the Tone tab. It helps me pitch match, and it always picks up that I’m speaking into it. The best one I’ve personally seen. Definitely worth a try if you want to voice train in order to alleviate dysphoria.

Useful!

I started using VoiceTools when I first got into voice work. It was challenging and strange to get my voice up into the register where I wanted. Now I’ve got better command in that upper register but am using VoiceTools to detect dips down to a lower sounding range. It’s just really helpful! I recommend it if you need it.

epic trans moment

epic my voice teacher said my voice sounds deeper after a few sessions but here is what i would add a. more specific advice and information about what’s happening in the voice box and how to manipulate it b. maybe set yr age range cause i’m 13 and afab so no matter how much training i do i won’t comfortably be in the adult male range c. idk if it’s possible, but i know male and female patterns are a little different aside from pitch, like females end their sentences a bit higher than they started while males r more monotone, females r more nasal while males r more far back, etc. idk exactly how you’d program that but if it is possible then that would be very epic and sexy but yes good app i recommend it !!!!!

Hands down the best

Voice Tools is hands down the best app for voice training i have found! The instant playback for voice pitch is amazing for learning what things actually sound like and where to improve. Not to mention the db meter’s the best i have used for even non voice stuff! I use VoiceTools so much!

Helps a lot

I’m FtM (female to male transgender) and I sometimes feel insecure about my voice. I’m over a year on testosterone but I still worry about how people hear me. VoiceTools slowed me to hear my voice and see how masculine (or feminine if that’s what you’re trying to achieve) and I really appreciate it

By

Perfect

Seriously, I can’t think of a better way for VoiceTools to function. It has everything I need to try to get a normal sounding low voice: the ten second playback, the tone so I can match it, volume, pitch. I love it and it’s fantastic. Thank you

Amazing

I absolutely love this. It’s really helpful when trying to train your voice to a comfortable point! Also I need to go get some water because I’ve been trying to sound like Bane for an hour and a half.

Weird App with Porn Like Ads

I got this just to check it out and it is weird. 1) I understand some people use this to adjust their voice to speak on a more feminine or masculine voice. I don’t know the PC way to say this but I was born and am a girl though VoiceTools said my voice was 77% masculine. So. I don’t m ow if it says that to keep people on thinking they sound like something they don’t. 2) when the analysis ended, it played a video ad that was porn-like. I deleted it.

I showed my speech therapist and she loves it

VoiceTools works really really well for me and my speech therapist says it helps that I can hear my voice change and make adjustments in rapid succession. Super duper recommend

Great app

Great to see what pitch to employ your voice to. And definitely great for practice. The only issue I have ran into is that every long once in a while VoiceTools will not pic up your audio so you can’t see what pitch you are on. But it goes away with time.

Great

This is a great app and very simple and works well, and the sentences to read is a nice feature.

I noticed you said resonance will be added later, that would be amazing!

Great app!

Many different ways to use it and helps a lot with my voice training!

The Best app!

Thank you to whoever created this. It has been really helpful, especially after Voice Feminization Surgery.

Just stopped working

It was decent for what it does at first. Kind of glitchy, but a quick restart would fix it. Just stopped working entirely though, will pick up a short sentence worth of sound then not pick up anything else. Restarting doesn’t help. Have a pretty new iPhone X

👍

This is a great app for voice training. Good tools and features. Very helpful with nothing that seems unnecessary.

Thank you

I’ve been using the live frequency display a lot. Thank you for making this!

Great mtf app

VoiceTools is the perfect companion for anyone trying to transform their voice. It’s very sensitive to frequency (pitch) and is not sensitive to loudness. It just so happens that the pitch of human voice is usually related to loudness/softness of our speech. That is, talking loudly naturally lowers pitch and speaking very softly naturally raises pitch. This can be overcome with training which is what VoiceTools is ideal for. I used it during speech therapy and it continuously provides valuable feedback.

Doesn’t work as intended

The pitches are random, and primarily go by volume. I’m a guy, but it claimed that I had a high voice. But as soon as I started talking quieter and quieter, the pitch claimed to have gotten lower and lower.
