Waiting for iPhone Max Update!

Kodak does its job of scanning film - color and BW negatives, as well as color positives. The quality isn’t the best. For example, if you have fine grain film, it will not look like beautiful fine grain, but that’s being picky. For the price of the scanner, it’s a really nifty thing to have and has been of much use to me in scanning BW film negatives.

Most importantly I write this review to point out that if you have an iPhone Pro Max, you’d have to hold your phone well above the box to actually get a clear picture. That’s not great because it’s bound to compromise the clarity of your photos even more. So i’m hoping that Kodak will soon be updated to work with the Max iPhone series! Please, developers.

Great for film photography class

I started the Fall ‘19 semester needing a film scanner my photography 107 class: Introduction to Black and White Film photography. Kodak has not crashed on me yet. Kodak is free and easy to use. I get to preview the negatives and pre-determine what photos I want to submit for a project. I’m all about efficiency and getting the most out of each roll of film. I give Kodak a five star simply because it’s helping get through my class and picking out the best photos. Oh and Kodak has never crashed on me yet.

Good for previewing negatives, bad for scanning.

I’m using the iPhone 11 Pro Max and although Kodak is great for quickly seeing my negatives after developing, it’s terrible with color rendition. The color red is so over saturated that it looks like a highlighter color. Lowering the saturation doesn’t even help. Other colors aren’t as bad though.

At the end of the day, the $25 scanner and free app is hands down the best/cheapest way to preview your negatives without having to use a proper scanner that takes 30 seconds-3 minutes per frame.

Broken update

Normally, Kodak is great and has been helpful for me with scanning all the family negatives and slides that I inherited from my grandmother, however not being able to edit the photos in-app since the recent update has been frustrating. I’m able to do this on my phone after saving each scan however if half of Kodak no longer works it slows down the process quite a bit. Hoping this is fixed soon.

Kodak Mobile Review

Pros: The application is very simple and I am able to get the photos extracted from the negative easily. I really like the colors and the contrast it captures.
The cons: sometimes Kodak will try to fix the Color of the photo making it look worse and the resolution it captures is low making it look grainy when printed or zoomed in. (I have compared them to the ones I’ve already developed from the supermarket a long time ago)

Needs Updated

Really is better than the other slide/negative film apps out there but needs bugs squashed. Lets you use all your lenses but the ultra wide on 13 pro is crashing Kodak for me which would make the best photo. Also needs to reward those early adopters that brought Kodak instead of forcing subscription.

Product works better without the app

The mobile scanner is a clever design. I’m using it with my iPhone to digitize color slides. Using Kodak , I got terrible (fuzzy) images. If I simply use my phone’s camera, I get great results. I have to crop and edit later with either my phone’s image editor or Photoshop (but even app-generated photos require editing).
TIP: remove your phone from any case or holder, as those things affect the focal distance.

Doesn’t work with iPhone 11 Pro Max?

I just got this scanner but it doesn’t seem to work with my phone. I have the three lenses, and while I can scan the slides, the photo comes out blurry and washed out. On a regular iPhone 11, the picture is bright and crisp. It would be nice if there was a fix so I could use it with the iPhone 11 Max.

Blurry scan with iPhone 12 Pro

I can’t get a clear scan using my iPhone 12 Pro. It seems like the scanner would work better with a iPhone that has one camera. Tried to scan with just my camera app and not the this app app and still doesn’t work very well. Bought the kit on a whim to see if it was useful. Probably need to buy a normal slide scanner for better results.

Works Perfectly

I recently bought the $25 Film Scanner to scan all my mothers old films of me. It worked perfectly. I was so amazed to see the films in color and it’s great for bringing those old memories to the digital world.

It’s almost there...

Perfect for efficiently “Scanning” film with the aid of a loupe. I have one request that would make this a 5 star app.

- allow native exposure control in Kodak
- support for zoom lens on iPhone 11

- allow import of photos from the device -This one might be tough. The use case is I want to shoot a negative using the native camera, then bring into this app app and allow it to process the negative into a positive image.

From a trusted photo entity? Disappointed.

There is nothing in Kodak that indicates how to use it, nor does it point out that you need a specific scanner. Got no prob with needing one. But it would be great if there were clear instructions on how to use what I believe will be an awesome app.

Crashed

Though the this app Mobile Film Scanner was touted as a slide scanner, slide scanning is not an option on this this app app and Kodak crashed on my iPhone. Thus, the only option is to attempt to scan without an app. That result was terrible. Also, one might want to review the privacy policy of Kodak prior to using it.

Crashes

If I could give this zero stars I would. I purchased the this app mobile film scanner and Kodak is needed to scan the negatives... but Kodak constantly crashes and won’t even get further than asking my permission to access my camera. PLEASE FIX THIS NOW.
