Really good idea but needs improvement

2024-01-18

The concept of HockeyTracker is really good. It gives you nice information, it is stable and it has a lot of potential. But, it’s obvious that it’s on its beginning stage. The calorie calculation is way off. I had a 2hs ice time with an average HR of 152 and it estimates a calorie burn of 518. My average burn for 2 hours using the “Other” workout from Apple Watch is close to (if not over) 1,000 calories.
I paid for the full year membership and the only thing that doesn’t make me regret it is that the creator of HockeyTracker is really active and tries to fix all the glitches and improve HockeyTracker on a regular basis.
Hopefully the calorie counting gets better over time.

Great information but drains battery

2024-05-17

I have had HockeyTracker for nearly a month now and play twice a week in a beer league. The information I get is great but the issue I have is a single game drains the battery of my Apple Watch 4 about 50%. I had 2 games today over a 5 hour period and my watch died in the middle of the second game. I charged the watch and the information from the game I was playing did not post to the application. Had I known that would be the case I would have used the Apple Activity app to track my calories burned as I can do 4 hour workouts and not have the battery drop below 75%.

If future updates improve battery life I’ll adjust my rating accordingly.

I really want to like it

2023-05-14

There are things about HockeyTracker that I love, but unfortunately I think it’s mostly for show. The stats are all mostly based off of your speed, which is quite wrong most of the time.

I am a 300+ lb man who is almost 40 years old and it tells me my Hockey Fitness Level is almost to McDavid levels. It also tells me my Vo2 max is around 60, which is also laughable. Every other watch/app I’ve used always shows around 33-38 for my Vo2 max, so HockeyTracker is clearly the outlier.

It also did a poor job in my game at separating shifts. Our games are three 18 minute periods, and it said I was on shift for 34 out of the 54 mins, which is not true. It counted 3-4 shifts of 30 secs and even when I delete them they still show up.

I wanted to like HockeyTracker so badly, but I can’t spend money on a pro membership for something that just doesn’t work.

Seems like a great app just doesn’t work well for me.

2024-04-25

Not sure if it’s the crazy warehouse type building I play in but the gps for speed is off. The shifts are really off. I video tape games so I know my amount of shifts and shift lengths. HockeyTracker is WAY off on both shift length and amount of shifts. Not sure what I’m doing wrong or if it’s just the building. I’ll stick to free version for now.

**edit - so I discovered there is a setting for max shift time. I play roller hockey however, so it’s not uncommon to have a 5 min shift. (When short players and having to double shift) HockeyTracker only allows up to 3 min max shifts. This is why my # of shifts are way off and shift times.

Good app, getting better

2024-03-30

I have had this since the release and have liked being able to quantify my hockey games. The developer is very responsive and doesn’t give you canned responses or passing blame off to Apple. I can’t speak to the accuracy of it because I haven’t tried others recently. I had a bit a while back and it was terrible inaccurate. For the post part, my games have about the same results from week to week. What is interesting, I can now quantify why I like one drink over another. Seems like I always have a better skate at one rink.

Love the app, just one issue

2024-02-23

I will start by saying that I love HockeyTracker and am so happy I heard about it! All of the information is great to have and fun to keep track of. My one issue is that literally every time I start HockeyTracker on my phone to review my workout, it starts up like it’s the first time I’ve used HockeyTracker and asks me if I’d like to sign up for a subscription. This is simply revisited by clicking “restore purchase”, but is it normal to have to do this every time? I’ve already had to delete and reinstall HockeyTracker because it wasn’t reading my heart rate at all. I call it growing pains, but overall I love HockeyTracker ! Keep improving!

Pretty Good

2024-06-30

I've been using HockeyTracker for a few weeks now, and have been enjoying it. However, there's a few features I would love to see. I would like an edit feature for top speed. I got a top speed reading of 26mph. I play in a beginner league and this is very clearly a mis-read, but I can't get rid of the stat without removing the whole skate. Also, it would be great to have the ability to add different custom stats, such as blocked shots or shots on goal.

Edit: I would love if HockeyTracker worked with shortcuts too. I am constantly forgetting to start tracking until the third period. Being able to automatically start tracking based on my schedule would be pretty handy. Or maybe a reminder when it detects activity. Or something

Very cool

2023-10-19

Is it weird I bought a watch because of HockeyTracker? I initially had sticker shock at the subscription price, but I can justify it after seeing it work.

I like seeing all the data. Not sure it makes me any better, but it makes me get out and skate more to see more data. Yes. I’m a dork like that.

I’m not entirely sure about the accuracy of everything. I’d like to see some comparisons for speed / distance skated using traditional methods like a radar. And did I really have a 10 minute shift??? I know we were short on the bench but yikes. Did I really burn 800 calories? Guess I can justify another beer!

Would like some of the graphs to be easier to read- like the effort level wheel chart. This one in particular is all different shades of purple. My mild male color blindness trait can’t tell the difference between them to compare to the legend.

Really like the app. Wish the revenue model was different.

2023-11-20

HockeyTracker has some great options: haptic shift timer, auto water lock, etc. HockeyTracker also offers excellent analytics. I would prefer a one time fee with optional annual upgrades, or a lower annual fee. Might stay subscribed after the trial, because HockeyTracker is compelling. If I do stay subscribed, I humbly recommend taking my money and spending it on a UI consult. The overall design is solid, but you have some consistency issues (fonts / instruction gaps) which would make HockeyTracker truly pro-grade.

Well done!!

Simple yet comprehensive

2024-06-16

I’m just a middle aged beer league guy but I love HockeyTracker. I’m not going to change my game at this point but the data you get from HockeyTracker is fun to sift through. I like seeing how my shifts get shorter as the game wears on, how many calories I burn and how my heart rate fluctuates.

I’ve had other tracking devices but none of them had a workout specific to hockey. If you wear your Apple Watch when you play hockey there is no excuse to not buy HockeyTracker.

My only beef with it is rally a beef with Apple. I don’t believe in software subscriptions and Apple is really pushing that model now. I’m old school and prefer to pay for a new release after it comes out. Software subscriptions have tendency sometimes for unscrupulous developers to not update their apps or fix bugs, but you still have to continue to pay for them.

Anyway, rant over. Reading the reviews and whatnot I get the feeling this developer is honest and attentive to HockeyTracker so I’m not worried about it. It’s a professional-grade app so I’m willing to risk it for the 4-5 years of hockey I have in me before I get too old and decrepit. 😀

Tremendous app

2024-06-16

I started using HockeyTracker simply to measure the distance of my skate-similar to a running app, and to also measure my speed. After a significant cardiac event, I have grown to appreciate the detail HockeyTracker applies to heart rate and BPM’s and how this is applicable to many ratings. While I may not fully understand ALL of it, I can sure as heck tell you that when I have a great game, the values reflect that. If I play a so so game, all of the relative data is also reflected. To date, I have used HT for about 3 years and I share the data with my cardiologist. It provides me the peace of mind to push my self (I have a max BPM set) and HT gives me data collection to be able to use for evaluation, analysis and other assessment activities that keeps me trying to improve.

With regard to my HRR, which is most important to me, it identifies a very consistent (good) trend which is shared with doctor.

Peace of mind and a lot of fun too.

Must have for any player

2024-06-16

Love HockeyTracker , I have been using it for close to two years and have used it every skate. The stats are really helpful and I genuinely look forward to seeing if I’ve improved at all. I recommend it without hesitation to any player that asks about it.

I would love to see the ability to edit the end time, maybe by trimming the heart rate over time graph, I have definitely had more times than I’d like to admit where I didn’t realize I had HockeyTracker running when I’m halfway home on the highway. You can remove shifts, but it doesn’t seem to change anything outside of the shift calculations.

Highly detailed and in depth tracking app

2024-06-16

As a hockey player, I wanted an app that could track my exercise/ playing when I got my Apple Watch. The regular “Activity” app just doesn’t cut it. After brief looking, I came upon HockeyTracker. Needless to say it was one of best decisions I’ve ever made! I’ve always been hesitant when purchasing apps or subscriptions but this is worth every penny. HockeyTracker is highly detailed and goes in depth with your various trainings. It monitors your heart rate, VO2 Max, speed, skating efficiency, and a few more things. I’ve had HockeyTracker for about 5 months now and use it almost every day. If you ever have any trouble with HockeyTracker the customer service and feedback is excellent and timely. Just be sure to keep your watch a little tighter for more accurate heart rate readings and turn off power save mode for HockeyTracker. You won’t regret this outstanding app!

Simply Amazing App

2024-07-14

If you play any level of hockey, this is an app you should not live without! Amazing data and stats that will encourage you to continually improve from skate to skate. The responsiveness of the developer is unreal, even when the issue was an iOS issue and not HockeyTracker . The annual fee is a no brained for all the extra information that is incredibly detailed. Thank you to the developer for creating and continuing to add features to this incredible gift to the hockey world!!!

An actual working no BS app

2024-06-08

Hockey tracker is great. It didn’t nag me to write a review, I was just thinking about how it’s a solid app that deserves a shout out.

It’s got good stat tracking, and trend tracking. It works well, and the developer is involved with HockeyTracker . I wish I could tell you something new about it but the website, screenshots, and app description are pretty spot on. It’s got a great integration with the watch, light years ahead of many other apps because it’s actually using the watch for health tracking in ways you just can’t get anywhere else.

I don’t feel bad for a moment paying for an app subscription because I get good use out of it and I want it to keep working in every new version of watch and iOS.

Very happy

2024-07-17

I love stats, especially stats that track what I do. I play beer league hockey about once a week. I think some of the stats might be inaccurate - I’d like to think I can skate 27 mph! I’m most interested in seeing the variances in BPM during my games. Those measurements seem legit. Seeing this data is helping push me to skate harder and play harder. I think the annual subscription cost is a bargain for the value HockeyTracker provides.

Phenomenal App

2024-07-17

HockeyTracker is the reason I switched to Apple products. The amount of data it collects and shares is unreal. The VO2 max readings are almost exactly what it is when figured manually. It is helpful to see how long of shifts I’m taking as well as progress in regards to intensity, recovery, speed, etc.

The interface isn’t perfect but for the amount of data it collects, that isn’t a big deal. I’ve been waiting for a way to actually track when I play hockey and HockeyTracker doesn’t disappoint!

If you play hockey you need this app

2024-07-17

I’ll skip over all the cool stats you get using this. Number of shifts, fastest skate speed, can save all your goals and assists and scores, etc. it has everything. What you need in HockeyTracker is it taps you when it’s time to end your shift! So all you ‘I didn’t realize I was out there for 9 minutes’ guys have no excuses now. Set it for 2 minutes and it will tap you. Freakin awesome. Works amazing with the watch.

Exactly what I wanted

2024-07-14

This is a very good app. It’s well designed, easy to use, is packed with features that go beyond expectations, and makes the post game high a little more fun if you’re into data. It’s like Strava in that sense (without the community aspect). My one complaint is it over estimates how fast I skated in single moments. I ain’t mcdavid (yet). But hopefully that can be fixed in a future update, and even if not, this is well worth the surprisingly low price. Great work!

Best Hockey Workout App

2024-07-14

I love HockeyTracker. As a coach I use it on the ice, and when I play. It is crazy accurate too. I can tell when I’m explaining drills, running them, or playing with the team. And the amount of stats it gives you to analyze after is amazing. I used to hate having to do a herbal open goal workout for a hockey practice, not any more! I get accurate workout data and some extra info I didn’t even know we could track. I have recommend HockeyTracker to any hockey player I know.

Phenomenal app

2024-07-17

I know sometimes people can be stingy about paying for apps, especially when it’s a monthly or yearly fee. But, honestly, HockeyTracker is worth every penny.
The detailed information it provides is everything I’ve been looking for in a health tracker - plus! it’s specific to hockey. Like some other folks have said, maybe you get a weird outlier (I don’t know if I can or have skated 23mph). But the benefits far outweigh any head scratchers.
HockeyTracker is improved on practically monthly, it seems. The dev is available to their users and helps troubleshoot any issues.

I love HockeyTracker. Again, worth EVERY penny. Cheers!

Lots of insights and always improving

2024-06-08

I love data and tracking my performances on the ice, even if I'm just a C leaguer. HockeyTracker helps me track the little things I work on, like skating speed and my cardio, and lets me know if I'm being selfish with ice time with details broken down by shift. And in just the few months I've been using HockeyTracker, it's seen a few major updates that make it better and better. Plus, I thought I found a bug, but the developer quickly pointed out a solution (it was my fault, not a bug) and told me my suggestion was coming in a future update.

Best app for true hockey stats

2024-06-08

I’ve been using this for over a year now and the hockey stats are awesome. I also love that it tells me that I could have played better/hard/faster based on my effort levels. The shifts calculator is great for an full game overview. The max speed is like a internal game now to try and beat myself. I do wish yuh could add a game since I don’t wear any tracking devices when I play goalie .. my chestie doesn’t comfortably with my watch on… great app and you can’t beat the price!

Works great

2024-07-17

Be sure to lock your watch when you start HockeyTracker . I had a few games that “ended” partway through before I started doing this.

Overall HockeyTracker is easy to use and seems pretty consistent. I have no idea if the skating speeds are accurate but they are fun to measure and see how you did after games and practices. So far I’ve logged about 20 games and pickups and have been surprised at how reliable HockeyTracker is. Start it on the bench, lock the watch, and forget about it until after the game in the locker room (push “end”).

Wonderful App

2024-09-16

I’m going to be honest here. HockeyTracker is very good! They’re are some very useful features and tools on HockeyTracker, that if you want to take you hockey game to the next level you should need! Sure a lot of the stuff you have to pay for but it is worth it! This is all around a great app especially if you have a Apple Watch to connect it to when you are on the ice. So like I said before you should absolutely get HockeyTracker.

Excellent

2025-05-07

I’ve been using HockeyTracker for three years now and it is by far one of the most useful apps I’ve ever used, even when compared with the other fitness apps I use. I recommend it to everyone I coach or play with.
I only wish there was a way to edit start/stop times for practices etc. HockeyTracker is literally one of the main reasons I moved to the apple os as well as getting an Apple Watch

Wonderful!

2025-06-07

I just recently got an Apple Watch and wanted to track my ice time. I found HockeyTracker and decided to try it out. It’s wonderful! There are a ton of metrics and it’s really easy to start tracking (which is great when you’re already ready to go and need to get moving quickly). The developer is wonderful and responsive to questions and concerns. If you play hockey and have an Apple Watch, you should get this :)

Love it!

2025-07-09

Phenomenal App that I think will continue to improve. I really like the fact that you can add stats and notes. It is great to be able to track performance along with how you physically felt that day, and the amount of sleep you had the night prior. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to get in better shape, track performance, or just get a better understanding of your physical capacity as a player.
