Word Hippo Reviews

This is the best and easiest-to-use creative word finding app that I’ve found since an old app had been discontinued a few years back. It gives you the possible different definitions at the top, then under a blue bar, handily categorizes the many different words into their noun, verb, and adjective groups, and it is visually easy to search them. It has many more synonyms compared to some of the other, similar apps I’ve found.
The one thing that would make it a hands-down, perfect 5 star app is if there were a red bar at the very bottom with antonyms.

In general I find WordHippo helpful and well executed. I am glad to have found it. I most often use the Similar Words (thesaurus) and Definition (dictionary) tools. In Similar Words, I appreciate the ability to jump to a possibly applicable section by selecting a Context from the list at the top, being able to click through any of the suggested words to see its synonyms, and being able to jump back to the top of the search results anywhere down the list.

The function I wish that WordHippo offered (or that I could find if it already exists) is the ability to click back and forth between definitions and similar words without having to switch tools and re-enter a search word. Sometimes I see a synonym in a Similar Words search and want to read its definition to confirm that it suits the usage I’m contemplating. It’s slightly cumbersome but quicker than riffling through both my thesaurus and dictionary.

I had WordHippo for two months already and it’s fantastic! I use it for my creative writing projects and it’s such a life-saver when it comes to helping me find another word for something. I have learned a lot of new words from using WordHippo and I am grateful for it. It’s free and not like all the other dictionary/word finding apps :)

I was using another app until that app wanted me to pay to use their app with its features. Somehow, I found WordHippo and wished I had only found it sooner! WordHippo offers the most word choices I have seen regarding thesaurus apps, and I have used several on my MacBook alone! That is the one downside to me; they do not have WordHippo for MacBooks. However, they have an extension easily found on Google Chrome, and I believe Mozilla Firefox, too!

I would like to thank this app and the staff, that has made it exist! I work as an author online, and there has never been a chapter where I did not use this website/app!

For lengthy years of my life, I’ve had to stray through unreliable and iffy thesauruses, but when I found this app, it was like a heaven of words, all in one! This has been the fifth year in a row, where I consistently use this website, and I will never stray away from it! My fans of my stories always praise me for my fantastic vocabulary, thanks to this app. Therefore, my loyalty lies with this app, because it is simple to use, never takes forever to load, and always comes up with the precise word that I need! In fact, I’m even using it right now to write this review!

If there’s anything that I need to say about improving this app, then I wouldn’t have too many opinions, but I would say that I dislike the new buttons on 2019, where at the bottom of each section of words, they say to click for more words. I prefer the old method, where it was just all in one, and I wouldn’t mind scrolling more or hitting the down key more on my keyboard, and see all the choices of words that I have, rather than forgetting to use the brown button that’ll give me more words.

Otherwise, thank you so much for making my experience with this app. It means a lot to me that you I can give someone an amazing experience with words!

I’m a writer, so I’m always looking for new ways to describe things. There’s no better place to turn for descriptive words than a thesaurus. What makes WordHippo so user-friendly is that each word is broken down into all of its separate definitions, and each description comes with a different set of word possibilities. I love that I can think about a word’s meaning in so many ways, and that I know there will be options to use to replace it.

I came across this app a few years ago and haven’t stopped using it since! I just can not believe more people don’t know about it!!!! I wish they had this back when I was in school. this app- you guys need

Having seen many translation systems and apps including google, I found this app perhaps the best. It translated one English word in all appropriate forms of usage into my native language. Here I want to differentiate translation from giving a lengthy meaning. WHippo tres to give one word equivalent in another language of request. It also provides the adjunct words in different usage. All this is shown in one page instead of going to many links. Everything considered, I highly recommend WordHippo.

I searched high and low for an English>German translator app that could translate a phrase, that actually worked and was correct! Look no more! Word Hippo was the only one who gave the correct answer let alone AN answer. Others may be able to do one word but don’t bother putting in a small phrase. Only Word Hippo did it and it gave easy to read translations but also different ways it’s used. I’m training a German Shepherd in German and the other apps couldn’t handle the phrase “Leave it!” But Word Hippo did it and did it well! Thank you Word Hippo!

I spend a lot of my time writing content and correspondence so having a simple but robust thesaurus at hand is crucial. Whether I’m stuck trying to think of a way to say something, need to come up with a creative name for an article, or discover rhymes that keep the rhythm flowing in a piece, I use this app for it all. I find it to not only be the most reliable, feature-rich source for those tasks but also a great spot to drum up new ideas based on a single word.

Hands down a daily go-to for me!

I’m a writer. WordHippo is so much better than online Dictionary/Thesaurus. No distracting ads is a bonus! But the Hippo’s in-depth lists of word definitions & synonyms always saves me from search after search for the exact word with all the word choices it provides. Other online dictionaries are history for me.
Update: I’ve used WordHippo for a week. What happened to the in-depth lists of word definitions & synonyms?
How do I get them back? Settings is no help.

this app is simple to use and they have everything you could of imagine. I won’t go too much in depth because it’s just an application for looking up definitions, word forms, antonyms, etc. Theres a feature I like to request. Would it be possible to make this offline, so I can continue using for other uses such as creative writing, and related to writing as well? That would be helpful so people who uses this can get access easily, and use it offline.

I love Word Hippo and have been using it for a long time. You have a ton of synonyms—or used to. The reason for only 4 stars is that it seems that you made a change in the way the words are listed. They. used to be in two even columns, which was very easy to read. Now the synonyms, and I suspect the other categories, are listed more like paragraph or narrative format. This makes them more cumbersome to read and makes my word search less efficient and more time consuming. It also seems like some of the synonyms have been taken out.
Please revert to your previous format. This is my main go to thesaurus.
Basic saying. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I heave been using the online site for a long time, but the pink hippo is almost used every day. My only complaint is really more of a convenience gripe, or even a recommendation, but if WordHippo was able to be integrated or embedded into any iOS, iPadOS or MacOS software available for it to be defaulted over the standard dictionary to run natively! Now that would definitely be a game changer! It’s already an awesome dictionary and easy to use, both app and awesome are, I don’t see myself ever needing another dictionary! And if you don’t think it’s great and convenient app too, well who the crap really cares, ITS FREE, and no F’n ad’s popping up on any search…

I’m 62 years old. I have been an avid reader and writer my entire life. And I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to remember proper names (of people, films, books, places,) as well as that elusive “right word” to describe what I’m feeling or thinking.
Hippo is my go-to application for help with that last bit. It works for everything except those annoying moments when you “just know the name of that song” (Shazam,) or for when the person approaching you is smiling and you just can’t remember his/her name but it’s on the tip of your tongue (some AR application that has yet to be invented?)
Hippo is more than a thesaurus. It’s a way to express myself more «aptly» (now THAT was a “Hippo” moment.)

Ya ok so you saw the title….I actually love WordHippo I wanna be an author when I grow up and this helps me find cool words! If you are looking at my review thinking to get it….do! If you are showing your strict parents this and asking for WordHippo let me tell them something my parents are also strict but WordHippo is actually letting me learn new things! Like instead of country-ish town for away from other things I can say rural or poor state I can say poverty, enough or a lot I can say ample! There are so many reasons I like WordHippo so please…….GET IT! There are a few minor set backs like sometimes it’s hard to find the word you are lookin for but hey it’s easier than reading the WHOLE dictionary!!!!!!

I have gone through so many "word" apps. Hippo recognises the way words ebb and flow in verbal languages. It defines and translates them too. All this for FREE. An absolute delight to use. Text friendly. So fast in handing up just the right word that there is barely a pause. Don't remember your spelling/pronunciation from high school language class? Hippo is there for you. I use WordHippo almost every day. I also must confess to, periodically, falling down the hippo hole (sounded better in my head). I get caught up in finding different definitions of words and chasing them through other languages. Invaluable for professional use, classwork, CVs to love proclamations. Hippo helps you express your authentic self by making it easy to find just the right words.

I like WordHippo. I started using it a long time ago on the web, and have grown rather fond of it while translating Mandarin Chinese text to/from English for my Immersion classes. It is also useful because I am an aspiring writer. WordHippo provides translations to Latin, definitions of words, and creative words to use in place of others, and so allows me to free up my narration and supply my readers (mostly just friends and family at this point 😁) with a more unique and alluring sound. I highly recommend this application.

I have no problems with WordHippo, only a few suggestions, the first being; on the translate feature in WordHippo, it would be really nice if we could “heart” or “favorite” languages so that they stay at the top of the list of languages, ready for use. (So yeah, this suggestion is mostly here in this review because I’m lazy 😏. )
The second suggestion (and last) is: could you please add a “Names” feature? I can never come up with names for characters. It would be really nice if you could.

Overall, this is an excellent app. I enjoy using it and have benefitted from it in the short time that I have had it. I highly recommend it for everyone and anyone who is interested in WordHippo.

The sheer quantity and thoroughness that Word Hippo gives its users is invaluable, to say the least. I used to use the top dictionary apps’ added thesaurus features, but they are severely LACKING. Plus the 2.99 price to remove ads forever is completely worth it. The only gripe I have is that when clicking on a proposed word, and thus transitioning to a different page, and then going BACK to the previous page, the previous is not saved at the last spot is not saved. This means you’re propelled back to the top and must scroll all the way down to where you were last looking. This isn’t such a terrible thing for words at the top, but it does become tedious when looking up different synonyms located at the bottom of the originally searched word.

I’m writing a book on mental training for teenagers and am constantly looking for new ways to say things. WordHippo is so great at not only finding synonyms, but also finding alternatives to short phrases. It even does a great job at helping me with metaphors and finding words that invoke certain feelings. Plus, it lists lots of words and phrases that people of all ages, including teenagers, use so I don’t have to just rely on “old school dictionary” words while writing to teens. I honestly LOVE WordHippo and highly recommend it!

App Store (and hundreds of apps) user for 12 years and my first review : so delighted with Word Hippo! Stumbled upon this simple, concise (!), xtra helpful, no-fluff, direct content. I love words, and word hippo taught me nuances and introduced me to unexpected options. I wouldn’t give a five star unless my mind was overblown, but this is a solid, enthusiastic review. I want to ensure WordHippo keeps going and is supported, so hopefully a paid version, or no add upgrade, or other method will keep it motivated and relevant. Thank u!!!

Just discovered WordHippo. As an amateur collector of regional variations in colloquialisms, idioms, all things spoken, I was thrilled to find verification for a word I heard as a child, & 12 other alternatives! So far I only have one complaint: I couldn't add words that that I have collected. There should at least be a way to submit a word for verification. As an expert in Hoosier Hillbilly, I would also be happy to help verify words in that category.

Love the Hippo! Best app for the creative use of words to be found. Easy to use, designed perfectly and has a variety of language tools at your fingertips. And the cutest logo ever ~ little pink hippo just makes me grin. Thank you designers for this extremely useful and much needed application

I have been using the website on Safari or Google for god knows how long. But I can’t believe its an actual app! I love this website sooo much and I one hundred and fifty percent recommend it. It has aided me abundantly with my writing and increased my knowledge with my vocabulary when communicating with others. Oh my god 😭 just had to prove how great it is 😭😭😭

Word hippo is amazing. It is very simple and easy to use and not complicated and confusing like others. You see I am 12 and i needed something easy to understand that had a thesaurus and a dictionary. And word hippo was perfect!! I use it a lot and it is a great app to have with no ads!!!! I recommend word hippo to everyone who needs something simple and easy to understand. It’s so amazing!!!

I love this website with all of my heart and it just warmed me even more to knwo that it’s an app! I use this everydsy for schoolwork, especially English. It’s just so helpful when you need to spice up your paper or you just can’t find the word you’re looking for. And then it has the other functions like translations and words rhyming with are always fun to play around with. Thank you for this!

WordHippo is sans pareil! I have been utilizing word hippo on line prior to knowing of WordHippo . The format is perfect to quickly navigate and I have found the content to be more extensive than all other sources I have accessed. Glad to now have WordHippo on page one of my home screen.
