Buggy as can be.

Look, I decided to implement this instead of Slack for my company because I can host on prem and have total control over the functionality. It also ties in nicely with Jira and other well known webhooks: Cloudwatch, Jira etc. But my god, is this the buggiest software/app. Notifications sometimes send (we’re on the enterprise version) - the notification server works when it wants to. If you’re on your phone while a this app notification comes through, you won’t see the pop up. If you’re lucky you’ll see a badge number, but that’s rare. If you do get a badge number, it won’t go away until you log out which is a pain especially if you’re using 2FA. It’s odd, because this app is supposed to be Enterprise level, and their interface is so nice and nice to use, but for whatever reason they can’t seem to iron out all their bugs. How hard is it to fix a badge icon? Or actually push notifications? What’s funny is that on this latest release it says badge icon issue fixed - I updated - and the issue is still there. Ughh. What can you do? Fix your bugs this app!

Good, but not in sync with Desktop App

I’ve had issues on and off since I first started using this app on mobile, like recently being unable to even connect to my server, but right now things seem to be functioning as intended. And in general that functionality is pretty decent.

I do know you’re taking some known issues, like the notification dot not clearing until switching conversions. And I know you’ve been working on a thread overhaul (can’t wait!).

My main concern right now is the lack of parity with the Desktop App. Mobile just got custom statuses a few days after Desktop got that plus custom categories. Now on mobile, all my conversations in custom categories are instead moved into the general list, not even listed under favorites which is what I would have expected at a minimum.

Please remember that parity is important in the future. And please make sure the categories on mobile feature is on your near-term roadmap!

Severe usability issues on iPhone X

I don’t usually write reviews for apps, but the this app for iOS app has crossed a line and I need to speak up (slowness, poor native integration and frequent dropped messages notwithstanding).

On the iPhone X, Mattermost renders the top navigation bar and message composition bar inside non-safe touch areas. This means that any touches within these areas, including most of the menu and search buttons, the attachment button and message composition button, are mostly ignored, which constitutes a large amount of the areas that I actually need to use in Mattermost .

Please, PLEASE test Mattermost more carefully in the iPhone X simulator next time before releasing what is essentially broken functionality to purchasers of a brand-new premium smartphone.

“Various bug introductions”

Twice now there have been releases that included “various bug fixes” and other features. However, they’ve also broken and introduced a bug (the same issue, to be clear) in a release. Mattermost has had various spontaneous logout issues, text overlay problems to name a few. We do like the open source aspect and have definitely taken advantage of all our abilities to integrate and customize for our specific environment, but MORE TESTING before releases of the mobile client needs to take place.

Not as bad as classic, but still unresponsive :(

Classic was a nightmare. This is a huge improvement. But still it hangs, it’s slow, I have to click and click and click the same send button 10 times before it sends. I don’t care if it’s server or UI issue. It just sits there while people are waiting for me to respond. Switching channels? Haha forget about it.
Look at WhatsApp for inspiration. Use erlang on the servers side. There is a decision maker killing ur company now making bad “here’s how it should be done” decisions when they should be making “here’s what we need to do” decisions. Fix it or ur competitors will fix it for you.

Why can this be more like the macOS version?

this app is actually really great on the Mac. I don’t have many problems with the iOS version, but I don’t see why the iPadOS version can’t have a two column layout like the Mac. I have a 12.9” screen. Basically the same size as my Mac. Let me have the sidebar and messages open at the same time. That’s really my only complaint aside from Mattermost logging me out every week and not saying I have read messages until I go to a different thread.

For being free this is pretty good!

One issue I would love to see resolved would be to have Mattermost refresh conversations more reliably. I will often get a notification that someone has said something but when I open Mattermost to view the full message it doesn’t show up. I refresh and refresh but it sometimes takes a few solid minutes for the new message to appear in the chat.

Stop. Logging. Me. Out.

Mattermost gets one lousy star from me because of the incessant logouts. They are NOT timeouts — I am in Mattermost constantly for work. They are simply logouts, no rhyme or reason. Where I work there’s a large headquarters office and a smaller satellite office where those of us in IT are. We often have meetings to attend at HQ where I don’t know my way around as well. There is nothing more frustrating than parking at HQ and pulling my phone out to see where my meeting is, only to be told once again that I need to log back in to this app. This is stupid. Stop it. Mattermost will be one star for me until this maddening “feature” is gotten rid of.

Game Changer

this app may be a work in progress, but it immediately improved my 2,800 person organization’s ability to securely share timely, relevant information with ease. With MM we have cleared a logjam of information that has impeded our productivity for decades.
The proof is in the pudding. Try it, see how others are leveraging it, and then make your own decision.

Joke?

I updated to newest version, hopeful that maybe it will actually connect to the server when you open Mattermost . Or maybe that I will finally stop getting notifications when I am on PC. Well I got a white screen instead and thats all I can see.

Mattermost is nothing but joke. You get a notification, you open Mattermost and it doesnt show the message. You have to proceed with some kind of voodoo and pray to see the message you just got.

I would rather use skype than this. (And thats saying a lot)

Needs some improvement

Good overall but definitely needs some work. Lacking administrative capabilities and multi tenant. Those would be a key component when on the go and I need to do things from my phone. Excited about this project and looking forward to future enhancements.

The worst support in the age of the internet

Buggy, frequently updates make it worse (by worse, I mean - completely unusable). There is no way to stop a paid instance, no way to stop them billing you for your instance, no way to change the billing to another team member, and after six email to support we gave up trying to transfer the instance to another owner. Can’t change credit card once attached to the account. Not ready for real world use.

Needs to get functionality that the desktop app has

This is a great software overall, but I’m in multiple workspaces that are all separate and I can only have one on my phone which means I lose communication with other teams when I’m on the go. Can’t believe that this wasn’t a feature that was prioritized in the backlog.

As iPhone apps, this is a nice improvement!

Nice and efficient compared to the Classic app.

What's the timeline on unlocking iPad clients? Using this app Classic on an iPad makes the improvements painfully noticeable.

Last: pro tip: every few days reset your cache under advanced settings. Mattermost becomes very sluggish over time and resetting the cache returns Mattermost back to normal snappiness. This is unfortunate but a useful workaround.

It’s not horrible

I mean it’s a messaging app… I get messages, eventually. My biggest complaints are it’s slow to update when opened to show the most recent messages and the biggest one is I do not get push notifications, so I have to consciously open it wait for it to update just to usually verify nothing has changed… most of my coworkers have the same issues. Please address them.

App works great!

I wanted to wait to review this until I've used it for a bit. Mattermost has served me well with little to no issues so far! I'm on iPhone X, and I don't have any real complaints.

I do have one feature request though. My custom GIF reactions don't animate on Mattermost. How do I see party parrot in all of his glory?

Needs work

Use this for work. Notification settings are lacking. When i need the notifications most, they never show up. Notification settings need a little work to give users custom notification settings. After opening app, there are multiple messages I’ve missed even though i turned on ALL available notifications.

Rollercoaster

Using Mattermost is something of a necessary evil. The unfortunate thing about using Mattermost is you never know what’s going to not work next. Right now the biggest issue is notifications just stop working. You can toggle notifications all you want, but the only solution is to delete Mattermost and install it again.

I really want to like Mattermost. It has come a long way, but it still has so much further to go.

Bareful functional, getting worse, woraround: mobile browser

The desktop versions are great. The iOS version used to be fine. But around summer 2021, the this app iOS app started become barely functional. Notifications are pretty random.

After replying to a post, the content for that channel disappears — even after clicking the back button and/or switching channels.

Workaround: Swipe up to restart Mattermost … after every reply.

I have a dozen colleagues saying more or less the same thing.

For now, if using an iPad (or probably an iPhone), consider just browsing to your this app server. It works great in Safari (just refresh ocassionally).

Could be a lot better

Should have a more compact size, it’s way too big. Also, when I click to chat, since there’s a micro space under the text bar, it always brings up a different chat and I ended up sending the wrong person my chat.

Bugs, lagging feature parity, and poor support

Unfortunately, I’m forced to use this service for my job but it’s definitely not Slack. First, there are a lot of bugs with the server, the Mac client, and the iOS app. Specifically to the iOS app, there are “stuck” notifications on Mattermost icon. Secondly, support is pretty much non-existent unless you want to go through a hassle of opening a GiuHub issue and hoping someone looks at it. Open-source should not equal poor support. Lastly, the feature parity is just not there.

Mattermost works, apart from the notification bug, so I’ll give it 3 stars. But the overall service and apps combined is pretty awful. I can’t believe people would pay for an “Enterprise” license given its issues.

Logs me out every day

I was forced to use Mattermost for my work which requires me to constantly be checking it daily. Every single day, Mattermost signs me out and makes me sign back in. Which, when I enter the password it does not work and it then locks my account out. Such in incredible inconvenience because it is a waste of time and does not tell you when it signs you out so who knows how long you’ve been signed out for. Terrible application.

By

No issues so far

I see the bad reviews about bugs. I haven’t encountered any so far. Those reviews are from over a year ago, so I think they’ve improved things. Thanks for a free alternative to Slack!

By

Meh

Works similarly as slack or discord. Seems like it’s more clunky though (slow load times, errors on chat refreshes ). Sometimes it just randomly logs me out which is troublesome. My company is still in the beta period I don’t think we will continue to use this service. iMessage is just as effective in a lot of aspects.

Quirks

Overall good app but having issues with several items:

1) The last message random scrolls over other messages on one to one chats.
2) Have to reset cache in order to see who is actually my online / away / idle.

Faster than Slack on iPhone 7/X

Have this app running on the smallest possible Azure VM. It's lightning fast for my small team. No big issues in Mattermost , it's responsive, starts quickly and doesn't crash.
