DB classic is best

DB Classic is wonderful, functions perfectly. Ive used it daily for years with no trouble. One of the last updates to DB classic broke it for iPhone XS screens. I’ve got 10 items recurring on the first of each month, I can no longer scroll through that entire list and check them all off. It stays below the bottom of the screen. Unusable now, forcing me to use this crappy new one or not use recurring items anymore which is the whole point of being able to track expenses.

Very unhappy about being forced into the new app from DB classic. What does it mean by “shutting down” oct 27? One of my biggest complaints is adding items on this version. Categories used to be so easy. Now it’s another click and scroll through a tiny window. Horrible in use! So many other “features” Dollarbird has are just clunky, unnecessary, and function poorly. I like the addition of photos and online access but having those is not worth dealing with the horrible operation of Dollarbird. There was nothing wrong with DB Classic. Forcing happy users to stop using your product is just bad business.

Used to be free, now a subscription

I used to absolutely LOVE Dollarbird. It allowed you put in unlimited transactions and income that would show you each days remaining balance on your calendar. One day I tried adding in a transaction and I found out you now you have to pay a monthly subscription to do that. I think this is the most ridiculous thing because these apps are supposed to HELP you save money, not encourage you to spend more of it. I understand if you need more support, but if you guys absolutely needed more money, maybe instead of a subscription you can charge a one time fee or something or add advertisements. Anyways I was disappointed with this change and ended up deleting it and I downloaded a different app.

Used to love this until last update.

So they fixed Dollarbird hiding old transactions, great! However, now Dollarbird runs so slowly I cannot stand it. It also duplicates transactions, or doesn’t add them at all. Seriously, whatever update you did a month ago, please take it back. There’s no shame in it, Instagram had to do it last month too. I don’t need to take pictures of receipts, I just need Dollarbird to work. You had so many good reviews for a reason, please don’t make me have to find another app!

Old review:
I’ve consistently used Dollarbird almost every day for the last few years to keep track of my budget, but the latest update has me quite frustrated. On the calendar there are little circles on the dates to let you know you’ve missed a scheduled transaction. Well now when I go to update the scheduled transaction it’s not there, but the circle is still there! It’s frustrating because I have all my bills scheduled, but they don’t always leave my bank on the day I schedule them for, so I just update them the next day, but now I can’t see them anymore. If you please fix this I’ll update it to the 5 star rating it deserved before this.

Freezes and crashes constantly

I am pretty disappointed by the update to this app 2, mostly for two reasons: 1) the new interface feels like it had the purpose to look good with no real purpose. Charges are harder to find and the monthly overview looks jammed. 2) A bigger letdown however is how data is handled on this app 2. Now it takes a long time after launching Dollarbird until all data has been loaded (it appears Dollarbird tries to load the most recent state from the server every time you open Dollarbird ). This makes the simple process to open Dollardbird and adding charge very slow and cumbersome. Additionally Dollarbird freezes (probably also due to server communication issues) constantly. All in all the previous this app was much simpler and faster to use and this version feels heavy and slow. I am close to giving up on this app.

Update after developer’s response:
Dollarbird works worse than initially reported by me. It consistently freezes (approx. 9 out of the 10 times I open Dollarbird and try to add a charge it freezes). It crashes often as well. And approx once a day it logs you out so you will have to log in again. Dollarbird needs serious fixing.

New interface is not as good as original

this app classic was such a good expense tracker app. It was simple, easy to use, colourful but very clean looking. I am disappointed that this new version of this app is inferior to the original despite being able to sync with cloud. Both the calendar and the transactions are larger now, so now you can only see two transactions per day, until you scroll. When you go in the report to see the spending of each category, it is now ordered alphabetically, the original version put them in descending order from most expensive to least, which is much better. This version tries to pack more details in the report but it ends up looking less clean and is harder to read. It also crashes a lot, and being online it is slower to load up than the original. Please please bring the old interface back!

Interface is okay. But crashes all the time

Edit:
The developers responded to my review so I tested it out again. The autofill is pretty good and the overal system is better. HOWEVER, I can't confirm new transactions on the phone without it crashing. Also, in the chart view, you can't scroll to the next month as you could in db classic. Also, I can't find a way to delete categories I made by accident and now they show up in the auto-suggest.

Previous:
The original Ui was what was so great about db classic. I could easily find the icon that represented my spending since it was laid out on a grid. Now I have to scroll or really on the unreliable auto select. Please fix.

Buggy, not as clean

The old this app was so clean and did exactly what I needed. That app seriously turned my personal finances around.

This new version had a lot of great things, but it's just so buggy. It freezes and shuts down all the time, you essentially can't use it when you don't have cell service/wifi, when you flip through different months on the calendar it's a 50/50 on whether the next month will actually load, the transfer feature between different account calendars just doesn't work (I try to use it to denote when I'm putting money in my savings), and switching between different calendars also takes two or three tries before it actually loads. I could keep going...

this app classic was absolutely crucial in the last year for me, and it's disappointing to have to switch to this new version and then not have a product that can handle the type of use its users have come to depend on.

Old version was better

I've used Dollarbird religiously for almost 2 years and would even pay for an upgrade with more features but this update is B-A-D! Dollarbird constantly crashes! About 40% of the time I try to use it, it will not register the date I click on. It flips to a month or 2 forward. This is soooooo frustrating. The calendar is much more difficult to navigate and click on different dates. Swiping transactions to reconcile them is much more difficult. In the older version it was much smoother. Also you can't compare balances from one month to the next. In the old version if you were looking at the recap for your monthly expenses you could easily swipe from month to month. Why put out an update with LESS features?? Total bummer. I was so pumped to see there was an update but I am now so disappointed that I have spent this much time inputting my data and using it to track my expenses. It now has no benefit for me :-(

Almost Perfect

this app is my favorite app for budgeting forecasts and keeping track of my balances and expenses. It’s so easy to set up re-occurring payments and income, while also being easy to change. However, whenever you make one of these changes, you have to re-confirm every entry in a series, one at a time. This can be quite tedious if you’re playing around with values, making category adjustments, or altering a schedule of payments/income.

Whenever you make a change to a series item, this app asks if you want to make the change to just that instance or the entire series. The one thing that it won’t let you do is confirm all entries.

A great example of this is they just added some category symbols and diving into my categories made me realize that I need to breakout and combine certain categories for better representation of my spending. Well, for many of those items that I know will always happen, I now have to go through and confirm all future instances of them. I know this lack of feature is because “what if something changes,” but I’d rather have to make a one time change at a singular, random point in the future than have to confirm my transactions every single month or whenever I make a minute change.

Being able to “confirm all” is the only feature I could possibly ask for from Dollarbird.

Extremely powerful tool

Dollarbird makes financial planning a breeze and is the main tool I use to help me make financial decisions.

Minus one star because there are several known bugs that have not been fixed for probably a year now; the development and maintenance of Dollarbird seems to be either at snail-pace or has stopped all together. Nonetheless most of the bugs are minor and don’t usually take away from the utility Dollarbird provides. The only major bug I recall is that when switching time zones, some calendar items shift a day or two – making the data inaccurate and rendering Dollarbird unusable until you’re back to your normal time zone. My workaround is to temporarily change my time zone on my device to my default, if I REALLY need to use Dollarbird while traveling.

Great app. Needs improvement

I love Dollarbird and have been using it since 2019 and have referred it to other people many times. I like the ability to change categories and it auto refills them after a while based on the entries. I am not sure why the balance no longer matches what i see in my bank account (i tried to keep up and to do checks/balances) and have gone back to the beginning too but i can find the “missing” entries anymore. the fact that some paycheck entries do not show the cents bothers me still even though i was told it’s being accounted for.
I tried to add multiple years and divide it up after but the starting balance can only be set for the current date and not a date in the past :( would be nice to have yearly calendars if you are paying foe the pro version.
I like it overall and it keeps me organized. Looking forward to more updates though.

Fantastic calendar based finance app

this app is such a great financial management and planning tool. While it doesn’t support budgeting directly, you can get around this by setting up different calendars per budget category you want to manage. For each budget calendar, you can deposit a dollar amount at the beginning of the month as income and then as you have transactions post to that calendar, it will show you how much is left in your budget. This is how I use it, and it does work pretty effectively. I still wish that Dollarbird had native budgeting built in which would even be better. Overall a really great app though!

Why don’t more people know about this app??

Dollarbird is one of the best I’ve found for tracking my expenses. I’ve been trying to moderate my spending the last few months (I tried Mint but their AI would mess up the categories all the time and their interface wasn’t as responsive). this app is amazing - the AI is really on point and categorizes my transactions correctly every time and it’s really easy to use. It’s also a huge upgrade from entering in a spreadsheet manually. I don’t mind having to input each expense as it helps me be more aware of spending and this app also has limits to help you as well. It’s also great if you’re trying to save for a trip or something. At the end of the month I can easily see how much money I have left over and can put away that amount into savings. So confused why it’s not featured on more websites/videos - it’s really upgraded how I track my expenses! Overall think this is a fantastic tool for anyone looking to take control over their spending and build better financial habits.

Great app - if I ever lost it I’d be screwed

The only thing I would want changed (and it’s not even close to a game changer) is that when you do a balance update, the difference goes into the “money spent” chart under it’s own category. Other than that, this is a great app. It allows me to see my bills in real time from this moment to weeks down the road to months down the road to even years down the road. It would also be cool if it had a savings feature where it would keep track of what you should have in savings - now and later - based on what you tell Dollarbird you have and what you are putting in.

I love this app

Shortly after I originally got this app, it switched to a paid model. I was hesitant to spend $40/year for a budgeting app (wasn’t it supposed to help me SAVE money, not COST money??), but I went for it. So, so worth it. I love how easy it is to use, and as someone who does a lot of freelance work, it’s great for helping me keep track of all my streams of income. I love that you can see the breakdown of spending and earnings and that it compares it to past months so you can start to see patterns in your spending. I cannot recommend this app highly enough!

I love this app, too bad it doesn't seem like it's progressing

Honestly this is the only app I've found that works with the way my brain works - having the running balance of the month displayed on a calendar is great for us visual thinkers.

Sadly, it feels like Dollarbird is being run by a skeleton crew - there are no updates or real improvements ever and on browser, I constantly get this annoying notification in the corner with news from like 2017. Ugh. And yet - no one else has this, so I'm sticking with it. Until some tech company comes along and buys it, I guess?

Best budgeting app!

My husband and I have been using DB for years now. I decided to keep up with it a year ago around the time it became paid only. I think it’s so worth it! Before deciding to stick with DB I tried many of the popular budgeting apps. Some were super fancy and seemingly powerful in their capabilities. None could show me where I was day to day SO CLEARLY. You can see where you’ll be in a week, a month, a year.
I have also multiple calendars. One for my current situation (both spouses working), one for my upcoming situation (stay at home mom) and also one for my savings account. I concur with a different user that I never forget to add my transactions. Whenever I need anything y email the DB team and they’re freaky fast! Faster than Jimmy John’s!
I’m happy to support them and very grateful for such an awesome tool!
Thanks DB team!

Favorite Simplified Tracking Tool

Dollarbird is my favorite simple way to track spending and balances. I subtract my savings so that the balance shown is just my spending/loose cash and like to know how much I will have on any given day based on reoccurring expenses, and daily spending so that I can see when I’ll have extra cash to save extra one week, or for larger purchases. I think it’s also a really great way to EASILY avoid overcharging if you can see any danger zone days where cash might be tighter for one expense or the other and want to avoid dipping into savings.

What I’ve been looking for.

I have never took the time to write a review about any application. I love that it’s not something that is automatically managing my bills. I love that it didn’t ask me to link all of my accounts for “live” updates that don’t ever seem to work. I love that I can budget everything. My major bills that just make the world go round, as well as meal plans and gas bills. At some point I don’t ever think I’ll need to look at my bank account again as long as I maintain Dollarbird I can maintain my financial future.

Seriously Best Financial App Ever!!!

I discovered this app about three or four years ago. I echo another user’s comments I can’t understand why mor people don’t use Dollarbird. I have uses them all. Most track budgets - as Dollarbird does as well - but the calendar cash flow view is simply the most powerful budgeting tool I’ve ever used! Not only can I track my budget against my spending categories but I can control and predict and run budget scenarios quickly. I have never felt more completely in control of my finances.

Also the fact that Dollarbird does not link to a bank connects you to your financial life and keeps you constantly aware of where you stand. I thought it would be hard or I might forget but that never happens. Also there are reminders to add transactions and the ability to program any type of transactions. Also the new ability to make a duplicate calendar to run budget scenarios: new monthly expenses, buy a new car, change in mortgage/rent, save for a trip, change in salary you name it. The ability to literally see your daily cash flow for months into to future has proven to be a game changer.

The new look is the perfect refresh. It keeps all the functionality of Dollarbird but updates the visuals in a way the makes Dollarbird even more useful and useable. Great work all associated with Dollarbird!!
