Don’t waste your money

Paid for a subscription to watch the grand final, had a few friends over to watch. Had a host of problems: couldn’t stream anything live, only videos from earlier in the day. I could watch live coverage on my phone but no button to stream to Chromecast/tv. Contacted support, they sent me a link and I was finally able to stream but it was so choppy that it was impossible to try and watch. Ended up with everyone huddled around my iPad, not exactly how I envisioned our night going. Even with that there were numerous times where the screen blacked out during the game and we missed seeing some important game play. Had to exit the screen and find the email link to be able to start watching again.
Customer service seemed totally on top of it UNTIL THE GAME STARTED, then all I received was canned email with no useful info. Next time the Eagles play I’ll be going to a pub

Read current reviews

I have had WatchAFL going on a year and am very satisfied. Living in the U.S. where watching live games are hard (15hr behind) the ability to turn the scores off is awesome. I like that the upcoming match times are set my local time so I do not have to continually do math. It easily pairs with my tv so I can enjoy the game on the big screen. Access to the live channel, classic games, and replays of the shows (especially Bounce) are great.

I have not had any of the problems that were listed from old reviews such as the score scrolling on the bottom of screen, hard to rewind, or shutting down.

Why not 5? I have not been able to access previous weeks of women’s matches. It can be expensive if you don’t pay for the yearly subscription. I wish the monthly subscription (30 USD/mo) was more in line with the yearly rate (approx 10 USD/mo). Lastly not really a fault of WatchAFL just the service you pay for, unlike the NFL network there are no live shows during the off season.

Go Cats!

Not great, but decent

I'm not sure why so many review are so horrible. I am running it on a old 5S phone and don't have the same problems that other complain about. Am I just lucky?

I will say that the inability to download shows and games is a big drawback. Due to adaptive streaming, many times the image is incredibly pixelated. As others have said, just let us buffer ahead or download and save to fix this most serious issue.

Even with streaming as the only option, I love being able to watch every game, and the Fox Footy shows. Works better than the competing app. One content complaint: why cut out all the pre-game and intermission commentary? Obviously live but even 3-4 hours later and the commentary is there, but deleted later on.

Add PiP to AppleTV app

There are plenty of times during the AFL season (and when the AFLW and AFL season co-exist) when it would be really nice to watch two games on the same screen. Yes, I suppose you could use an iPhone or iPad as a second screen, but other AppleTV tv/video apps have picture-in-picture functionality and it’s more convenient than multiple devices.

Getting Better, still a few small issues

3.5 stars. 2018 is working better than previous iterations. Mainly only have problems when trying to start watching a replay from the beginning when it’s still underway, or has only recently finished.

Big annoyance: No Apple TV app. Have to stream from phone or iPad. They should really have got this sorted by now.

Best app on the planet

WatchAFL is everything to a Melbourne makes living abroad! Sure, it can have a few hiccups from time to time but for the most part it gets the job done and at quality and speed that feels better than on home soil at times.

Thanks AFL - need this in my life

Timeline scrubbing and replaying fails

Want to replay what just happened? Or find a specific time? Good luck, WatchAFL only allows you to navigate in approx 15-20 minute increments.

Sometimes when you go to watch a game replay of which you’ve been avoiding all news and social media not to spoil the outcome, it starts you from the end of the game... revealing the final scores and game summary.

Please fix the above ASAP

Still needs work

Whenever I download a game to my iPod, the file gets deleted when I close WatchAFL . There should also be controls to fast forward or rewind by 10 second intervals. It is hard to use the slider to get to a specific time. Why can’t we watch games from previous seasons? Before Fox took over, we were able to do that.

Ok...

It’s nice to be able to watch the matches in the states. But I DO NOT like how a user can’t control the sound from within WatchAFL . Also, the download feature limits the user to just one match. Not a fan of those two things.
Let us control the sound within WatchAFL please!

Great App

Works great. Nice selection of shows/matches. Was concerned after reading previous reviews but is well worth it if you enjoy footy.

Worried by reviews

I was worried by the poor reviews. So far we have had zero issues. Works perfectly by casting or Airplay. Very happy footy fans here in Oregon.

Doesn't work

I have had constant issues with WatchAFL , half way through a live game it jumps to a replay of some other finished game, it freezes, it sometimes jumps back to 10 minutes previously in the same game over and over, just repeating the same content.

I definitely wouldn't pay $150 for this

By

Poor quality stream

Very rarely get more than a few mins without it freezing. Expect it’s server load at more popular time but in today’s streaming world it should be far better from a service that charges a premium for access.

Poor showing

Poor app.
Consistently auto downloads even if you have no programs set for auto download.
Frequently doesn’t play downloads when you have downloaded a show or match.
Has bug where you may be watching a game and then it suddenly quits and returns to main menu.
Toggle between download screen and home and the main navigation disappears.
When it does work, quality of picture is good.
Appreciate efforts made to offer more shows to subscribers but other functionality above ruins this experience.

By

Terrible

Replay function is useless. Tried watching replay of a game and it started from the end of the match. Got the score and ruined the game. The issue is not so much WatchAFL itself but the folks who upload content to it

By

So happy for this app, but...

On an iPhone X the home bar stays on the screen in WatchAFL and pushes the video up to compensate for the home bar this blocking the scoreboard when you watch the video in landscape view

By

Chrome cast seems to have stopped working

Worked great in 2018 - latest updates seems to have stopped working in Chromecast.

By

Spoilers everywhere

On the iPhone, watching the replay - the bottom of the screen has match highlights with headings that spoil the whole game - useless!

By

Ok I'll Wait

I used to watch AFL and was thinking about a subscription, but based on the reviews (thanks, by the way), I will wait for the bugs to get ironed out.

By

Bad streaming.

I have 70MBPS internet speed.
Streaming is grainy and jumps every 3-4 seconds. Game is unwatchable.
Customer support non-existent.
Emailed them twice. No response.

By

An Average Average

Can I watch the games yes.
There are a few problems that have been mentioned. No instant replay section or ability to go back a few seconds or even a minute... or even a few minutes. You have to scrub back about 25 or 20 minutes for it to rewind or fast forward.
Ok the of the biggest problems is trying to watch a game from the beginning shortly after full time or close to and WatchAFL will load the game to the live point. This showing me the score and virtually ruining the game for me.
Downloading for offline viewing only seems to download when WatchAFL is actually open. No background downloading for games or shows.

I purchased the app to watch games whilst travelling in Europe mid 2023.. The first game was pretty good apart from it randomly jumping to another game, then jumping back to mine and at one stage it did go to the end of the game which gave me the final score unfortunately. However the 2nd game that I tried to watch live would not stream, even after 5 separate attempts, so I decided to kill some time to watch the replay, but when I tried it said "this game will be able to stream at 7.45pm tomorrow", which is 24hrs away. By then I'm sure I will see the score somewhere and it will be ruined for me. For the price, it's definitely not good enough
