I love it

I love being able to explore so many languages. And in the school where I teach the main languages are spanish, vietnamese, somali, oromo, amheric, tagalog, punjabi, samoan and more. This is the only app I could find which gives access to learn basic phrases in all of them (add quiche and kosrae please). You won’t learn a language on uTalk, there’s no development or explanation, it is a phrasebook only. But to that end it’s great. I used it traveling in Albania and Bosnia and it really helped. The native voices differentiating for male and female is nice, The games are good practice without being boring, though the memory game is unnecessarily hard. There’s speaking practice too. My frustration is that I only really want to learn a few phrases in a topic. I do want to ask how they are and say happy birthday, etc, but I don’t have interest in asking them where the atm is or whether I should boil the water. But to do the practice games I have to learn all. With a subscription you can make your own phrasebook, but you can’t test yourself on it. And if you don’t buy the subscription you won’t know which phrases are in a topic so you can only guess if they’re useful. But overall I’ve really loved it for what it is and it will continue to be a go-to app for me.

I’ve tried them all

I’m moving to Canada soon so I thought it would be a good idea to learn French. I’ve been wanting to for years and tried many programs. I purchased this app awhile ago but hadn’t started with it and instead went with the much touted Babbel. Babble was boring me and wasn’t fun so I opened up this app. OMG! What a difference! I’ve learned more, it’s fun, I get to challenge myself, I love playing the games! Thank goodness for the snail feature! I like the speaking feature because I can hear the hesitancy and know I need to become more confident. The games are great and prove if you make learning fun and challenging you learn more, faster! And thanks for showing me there is French and Canadian French!

Great, but...

I love this app. I have been using it for a while now, and you can learn a lot from it. If I could make a few suggestions:

1. With the wide range of topics you provide for each language, I think it would be great if you had a review feature to keep our memories fresh.

2. A dark-mode feature perhaps? I would like to practice with your app at night, but uTalk is a bit (too) colorful for my taste, so I use another language app that does provide it at the moment.

3. More sentences! Vocabulary is great, but sentences will strengthen uTalk ’s use even more, especially when there is vocabulary that is just way too easy, and makes it less challenging.

Anyway, this is a great app, and I hope to add that extra star to its rating once one or more of the following features are implemented. Thank you.

Update: I added the extra star for its great customer service. But I hope the following updates will make it better.

Amazing App and Great Customer Service

I have had this app for over a year. I’ve been learning Bengali and Spanish to be able to communicate with my patients at the clinic. When I had trouble with uTalk , I called the customer service line and Richard was able to assist me right away. I was very impressed by their professionalism and quick action. I highly recommend uTalk for anyone interested in easy long-term learning. Thank you this app! 😃

Refund/canceling subscription

I contacted them once I realized uTalk was not for me. They asked for my email so I provided it. They emailed me back and said they couldn’t find that email so I sent the last 4 of my card number I used and they stopped responding. I later screen shot my email I used to sign up for the and the card number and asked if they received my first email. No response back from them. I emailed them again today this morning asking if they received the email or able to locate the card I used. Here we are at 1:33 pm and still no response from them. This is giving me scam vibes. I’m really upset

Amazing selection of languages, poorly built

Quiero aprender el español argentino, y esta es posiblemente la única app qué lo enseña. That is very valuable. I can’t wait to learn it!

However, there are a couple of incredibly peeving issues with uTalk . Foremost: It is barely compatible with headphones (every time I open it with music playing and wired headphones in, the music suddenly pauses and then continues) and simply does not work with Bluetooth headphones. My AirPods can be on, and playing music, but this app refuses to allow its audio to play through them. It insists on suddenly disconnecting the AirPods and playing everything through the phone speakers.

Also, it doesn’t seem to remember my language preferences. I have my phone set to Spanish to practice, but I don’t speak Spanish yet—I want uTalk ’s translations to be in English. Every time I open uTalk , it has changed back to Spanish.

I will refrain from paying any money for uTalk until these issues are resolved.

Needs to give feedback on your pronunciation

While this is a good first step to learn vocabulary, I have yet to see the game actually critique your accent. If this feature is added, this would greatly improve uTalk. Great because it has different versions of the same language, IE Canadian French vs European French; Ancient greek vs modern, and Many others. Other than that, it is not as strong in giving feedback as their counterparts.

Set up

Suggestions for developers. Very hard to set up on the mobile app. The texts and pictures are way to small to read or set up

Don’t buy a subscription

I bought a subscription. uTalk still requires that I buy uCoins to access the data the subscription was for. They also tell you that you get upgraded customer support if you buy a subscription. I got a link to their general support site on the web with an email form to fill out. Yeah, that’s not upgraded customer service by any stretch of the imagination.

I logged out of uTalk . I logged back in. I erased my customer information. I logged back in. Nothing. Every time I try to access the content I get directed to buy uCoins. I don’t know if it’s a scam or what, but don’t buy a subscription.

In love

I’ve been secretly learning arabic to surprise my boyfriend because it is his native language. Sadly, I recently realized that I was learning the wrong dialect 🤦🏽‍♀️. I am so grateful for uTalk, this is the first app I’ve found that teaches Moroccan Arabic. thank you soo much!! I know he’s going to be so surprised when I just start speaking to him in his native tongue far beyond the words and phrases he’s taught me.

A lot of fun

I'm having a lot of fun learning my target language with uTalk. Learn some spelling, make some sentences and work on pronunciation. UPDATE:
I had a tiny glitch and contacted the developers, they responded immediately and all was resolved quickly. Then, I received an email from the developer, just t make sure all was well and to thank me for the review. Good folks running this. Thanks again, Eurotalk😊

Great but still lacking

Honestly, this is a great vocabulary app. But at least for the language I am trying to learn, it is still missing basic fundamental pieces like conjunctions. There's a lesson on the culture, but there aren't any lessons on basic sentence structure. Good for expanding your vocabulary, and might even get you through a vacation to the country, but it won't get you to full fluency.

Good app, but some questions...

I have downloaded other this app classic apps and have been trying to get the ‘free topics’, but you have to sign up each time, so it doesn’t work. I would also like the ability to get the topics on the other this app go app which I was able to do, however since the new updates the on classics, I am no longer able to do so. If there is any way to fix this that would be nice.

UTalk is a great product with outstanding customer service.

I downloaded the this app to learn Amharic. It’s the best and most comprehensive language app I’ve ever found for Amharic. I had one little issue with it and messaged Their support team. Tinka promptly and professionally fixed the issue. Great company I would strongly recommend to learn any language.
Thanks

App mostly good, support great.

This language app overall is really pretty good for developing basic vocabulary, and it's enjoyable as well. I only have one complaint about uTalk at this point:

The memory game could definitely be improved. When there are several items, it becomes difficult to remember what is where. This tests location memory more than vocabulary memory, and is very frustrating and counterproductive.

I made the purchase through StackSkills, which was a mistake. They really gave me a headache trying to get things to work. The support from this app, in contrast, were very courteous and helpful with what they could address.

Overall, I recommend uTalk as useful, enjoyable, and worthwhile.

Memory game is too hard

Ok, I’m not bad at learning languages. I’ve tried many and I like most of the games on this bar the memory one. For people that don’t have a great visual memory to phrase memorisation under a seriously harsh time limit it is impossible to fill up the subject and very detrimental to learning.

I’d either recommend keeping the cards to four or allowing more time for the brain to actually remember the placement of the images and to recall the phrases. I’ve tried so many times and I can’t do this stupid mini game.

So far so good👍🏼

I gave it 4 stars for now because I just started using it, also because uTalk does not force you to use your money to unlock other options, you can actually earns points by completing each tasks. I will do another rating review once I’m more familiar with uTalk and able to fully learn my native language.

Just what I was looking for!

Learning another language is great but learning another language in a specific dialect is what I’ve always been interested in. So when I learned that’s exactly what uTalk teaches I immediately purchased it. I have not regretted my purchase. I highly recommend!

Not for everyone

The potential is here. However, learning Thai language there are subtleties between male and female responses. uTalk will NOT allow a user to select either only male or only female responses making it totally useless and counter productive.

For some languages strongly consider other alternatives prior to purchasing this app.

Update :: The developer disagrees that the user should have a choice. Again, this attitude shows the reason why there is a weakness in uTalk regarding the Thai language as far as this user goes. Plus the developer asked for a higher rating. Go figure.
