Great content poor UI/UX

2022-09-03

Hi FP,

Been a subscriber for over 10 years on and off. And while I love the content and always appreciate the in-depth reporting and FP analysis; the iOS App is a poor platform for displaying your great works.

The FP website is much better. ForeignPolicy lacks any decent elastic search capability, the fact I cannot look up articles by title or author easily is disturbing for a 2018 media-based app.

My “starred”/saved articles seem to disappear without notice when I review them.

The processing and loading of articles is timely nothing like my other media apps such as NY times , Wash Post, WSJ, or Medium. There are a lot of UI lessons to be learned from those for FP app.

The ability to subscribe only by defined topics instead of user defined is also a poor way to push info to user. Simple topics like “intelligence” or “security cooperation” don’t appear to exist.

The ability for user defined tags to articles would also be a benefit to ForeignPolicy . And help crowd source your search engine and parameters.

Also ForeignPolicy doesn’t appear to display the amazing graphics from the website and magazine for which FP is famous. A lack of info graphics and save them to a user’s device seems like a necessary fix for any media app.

Again FP’s content is amazing but how it is disseminated in ForeignPolicy is disappointing. I look forward to app updates and am hoping ForeignPolicy catches up with the highly renown website and magazine.

Cheers

Weak app, great publication

2024-01-29

Foreign policy magazine is great. But ForeignPolicy is not a magazine. It’s not even a browser. It’s a feed. It gives you articles in more or less chronological order. No headlines, no searching, no customization. Also, no offline reading (New Yorkers like this on subways! And everyone likes it on airplanes!). You’re better off reading FP on a browser. I love good reading apps (NYT, New Yorker). This is not one of them.

Good content, bad interface

2024-07-06

The quality of reporting and articles are great. My complaint is the interface is very outdated. The website has many graphics, photos and color in general. This is basically just the text. It also lacks a search feature. I’d like to read on the go and possibly receive notifications via ForeignPolicy not just through email. I’ll have to stick to the website until they update this very basic app. I also noticed there has been only a handful of updates in the last few years, FP obviously is not focused on ForeignPolicy ’s quality.

Needs UI/UX improvements

2024-04-19

Quality content but ForeignPolicy needs work - especially for how expensive a subscription is. Its not terrible or unstable but it feels old and sluggish with a poor use of screen real estate, barely passing for a typical news app from 5 years ago. Now that that the bar for what passes as a solid news app is higher (looking at you The Economist, WSJ, NYT, Atlantic, Guardian, etc) I would hope they update their UI/UX to keep with the times.

I find myself doing most of my FP reading on their website because of this.

Broken in Dark Mode

2024-01-13

I have my phone I dark mode and I can't read half of the articles because they appear in black text on a black background... I can read them if I copy-paste the text into a different app like Notes but that is ridiculous.

App great for old people...

2024-04-19

But not for us younger folks! The UI is MASSIVE and only fits two stories on a screen, which is especially bad on my iPhone 11. I feel like it treats me like I’m blind. Please give us the option to make things smaller and fit more on a page. All the buttons are awkwardly sized and make me think it’s a poor quality port from older, smaller iPhones. The bottom navigation bar is useless. Feels like it was done by a single programmer quickly, rather than by a professional. This review is for ForeignPolicy not the content.

Don’t like visuals .

2024-06-09

I can’t figure out how to change font size and it seems like it’s always in night mode. Makes it very hard to read for me. Not sure if I’m just missing anything but I’ve looked around and can’t find a solution.

Nigh on useless

2023-05-11

I love this publication. But ForeignPolicy is frustratingly sparse.

Articles I find in Twitter don’t appear in ForeignPolicy where I can save for reading later.

The search function doesn’t yield the name of an author who published an article today. It doesn’t yield the subject of that article in anything written after 2018.

When I open ForeignPolicy with multiple notification badges, it doesn’t indicate which articles triggered the alert.

Every menu lists the same four uninformative options containing the same content.

Must do better.

Why can’t I access the contents??

2024-04-13

I subscribed to FP on my iPad. I would like to access ForeignPolicy through my phone, but it doesn’t work. So I tried re-joining, but it says my e-mail account is alredy in the system and asks that I go to the manage subscription page. I go there and it takes me back to the create account page. Wut?? I e-mailed the customer service but I have no reply. As of now I’m waiting for my subscription to end. Anyhow I’m very frustrated at what’s going on. Otherwise I’m satisfied with ForeignPolicy and the contents.

Poor App, OK Content

2024-08-11

I got ForeignPolicy because I usually read the magazine but lose it before finishing (if you ride the Metro Red Line, maybe it’ll be your lucky day). ForeignPolicy is very basic and doesn’t have iPhone X support yet. Not terrible, just not polished. Sometimes I find that ForeignPolicy stories are published very quickly and contain typos. Good writing, just maybe give your copy editor some more coffee.

Could be better

2024-08-23

I rate it 4 stars because the issues and ideas are critical information, but ForeignPolicy can definitely be improved. Make it more like the New York Times, perhaps even allow comments. Improve ForeignPolicy and make it easier for people to like it and subscribe!

Great app, but loads weirdly

2024-08-28

I love ForeignPolicy and have recently been reading Foreign Policy daily. However, when you exit out of ForeignPolicy (to answer an email, for instance) and later return to it, the page will be blank. You will be forced to return to the Home Screen with no way to return to the article you were on. I wish there were a history feature.

Otherwise, great app and quality journalism.

Great articles, could improve user interface on the app.

2024-05-14

Great articles of substance from writers with subject matter expertise. ForeignPolicy interface is horrible for 2018, though. I’d love the ability to share articles I find interesting on social media platforms from within the FP app, but it’s impossible. If the interface were up to 2018 standards, would definitely be worth 5 stars.

Can’t turn off dark mode

2024-04-13

ForeignPolicy is great. I like dark mode on my phone a lot, but I don’t like reading articles in dark mode. Almost all apps have the ability to turn dark mode on/off independently of iPhone system settings, and that ability would be greatly appreciated for the FP app.

Love FP - App is okay

2023-12-18

As long as I can read FP articles on-the-go, I’m happy. However, the iOS app is not very user friendly and easily navigable. More category features would be useful. Nonetheless, I have not experienced any faulty issues and happy to use ForeignPolicy - content is great.

Balanced Reporting

2024-08-23

I have been very impressed with the style and substance of the reporting that goes into this News outlet! And written above the 8th grade level. lol And frankly the only news outlet whose podcast I've listen to!

In an environment where news media can and have tried to influence and resist the orderly peaceful transition of power in our government this organization has stayed true to our forefathers vision! While definitely not in anyone's bag!

I ready it daily

Great way to read FP

2025-05-08

Great user interface, great journalism, excellent use of my phone's hard drive space. One feature that would definitely improve my experience - and I don't know if anyone on FP's staff reads these things - would be the ability to access the Morning Brief in ForeignPolicy (like SitRep) rather than only through the daily email blast.

Real News

2025-06-08

I love Foreign Policy for their factual reporting. It's nice to read news that isn't hyperpartisan like MSNBC or Fox News. ForeignPolicy also works extremely well and find myself reading articles whenever I have free time.

Excellent range of information

2024-08-23

Hi FP
I have had ForeignPolicy for almost two years and have found it a great platform for getting information. The opinions and insight offer by the contributors is wide ranging and challenges my preconceptions on various issues. In this day and during these times I feel it more important than ever to get information from various sources. Doing so helps me become a better citizen for our country.

Enables my understanding

2025-08-10

ForeignPolicy creates the platform to grasp the underpinnings of policy and news developments. I don't suddenly have a day to figure out the meaning of something that happened in the world. ForeignPolicy and Foreign Policy have allowed me to use small blocks time to gain understanding.

High quality analysis and commentary

2025-09-15

FP is one of the best publications out there for world affairs, with a broad array of perspectives and expertise. From Pulitzer-winning war correspondents to widely regaled academics, the pieces that offer personal perspectives or insights all start at very credible sources. Despite that, I never find the publication dry. And ForeignPolicy is well made to give a casual reader a taste of 5 articles monthly -- although I think you'll be quickly sucked in and become a subscriber if this type of content is at all for you!

Great app

2025-10-13

I really like FP because it covers so much that gets left out of regular news and has awesome in-depth articles. I have subscriptions to 3 news apps and this is one of them (I also chose the option with the print magazine because it's a really good magazine).

Amazing app, amazing journalism!

2024-08-21

FP is an absolutely amazing magazine, and is a perfect example of top notch journalism! The in-app subscription is definitely worth it, because I can get on ForeignPolicy and read 5 articles in one setting!!! ForeignPolicy itself works great, I just truly wish it came with larger text and dark/night mode!! But still deserves 5 stars!!

Great app

2024-08-21

A wonderful way to get a quick dose of international politics. The articles are short yet still manage to explore often complex subjects. The interface is straight forward and presents everything you'll need when using ForeignPolicy .
