Great content poor UI/UX

2022-08-09

by Tomes JT

Hi FP,

Been a subscriber for over 10 years on and off. And while I love the content and always appreciate the in-depth reporting and FP analysis; the iOS App is a poor platform for displaying your great works.

The FP website is much better. The app lacks any decent elastic search capability, the fact I cannot look up articles by title or author easily is disturbing for a 2018 media-based app.

My “starred”/saved articles seem to disappear without notice when I review them.

The processing and loading of articles is timely nothing like my other media apps such as NY times , Wash Post, WSJ, or Medium. There are a lot of UI lessons to be learned from those for FP app.

The ability to subscribe only by defined topics instead of user defined is also a poor way to push info to user. Simple topics like “intelligence” or “security cooperation” don’t appear to exist.

The ability for user defined tags to articles would also be a benefit to the app. And help crowd source your search engine and parameters.

Also the app doesn’t appear to display the amazing graphics from the website and magazine for which FP is famous. A lack of info graphics and save them to a user’s device seems like a necessary fix for any media app.

Again FP’s content is amazing but how it is disseminated in the app is disappointing. I look forward to app updates and am hoping the app catches up with the highly renown website and magazine.

Cheers

Good content, bad interface

The quality of reporting and articles are great. My complaint is the interface is very outdated. The website has many graphics, photos and color in general. This is basically just the text. It also lacks a search feature. I’d like to read on the go and possibly receive notifications via the app not just through email. I’ll have to stick to the website until they update this very basic app. I also noticed there has been only a handful of updates in the last few years, FP obviously is not focused on the app’s quality.

Weak app, great publication

Foreign policy magazine is great. But this app is not a magazine. It’s not even a browser. It’s a feed. It gives you articles in more or less chronological order. No headlines, no searching, no customization. Also, no offline reading (New Yorkers like this on subways! And everyone likes it on airplanes!). You’re better off reading FP on a browser. I love good reading apps (NYT, New Yorker). This is not one of them.

Have a Problem with Foreign Policy? Report Issue

Why should I report an Issue with Foreign Policy?

  1. Pulling issues faced by users like you is a good way to draw attention of Foreign Policy to your problem using the strength of crowds. We have over 1,000,000 users and companies will listen to us.
  2. We have developed a system that will try to get in touch with a company once an issue is reported and with lots of issues reported, companies will definitely listen.
  3. Importantly, customers can learn from other customers in case the issue is a common problem that has been solved before.
  4. If you are a Foreign Policy customer and are running into a problem, Justuseapp might not be the fastest and most effective way for you to solve the problem but at least you can warn others off using Foreign Policy.
