Good idea- But app doesn’t work well

The idea is great, but the functionality of app is worthless. Here’s why:

1. I downloaded and used app for 15 minutes during which ProjectColor crashed 3 times. Had to reopen and start over again continuously.

2. Taking photos and allowing app to access certain photos worked fine. When looking over color swatches, the names of colors weren’t available to see (you’re going on small color swatch alone). Once you click on a color and it takes you to your chosen photo, there isn’t anyway to “undo” or “page back” if you don’t want that color.
E. G.- I accidentally tapped on one color swatch a few times because no names are given (until color is selected) and I wasn’t sure “which black color” in that row that I had already looked at. I didn’t realize I had selected the same color until I clicked on it and then I could see the color name. I had to exit out of the picture completely and restart process just to choose another color.

3. “Painting” the color onto photo. The tech is ok. It does leave a white outer line around “painted area”, so that can be distracting. I also had an actual paint swatch on the wall, so it had a white line around that swatch too.

4. Overall- the inability to go back to color sample options from photo (having to restart process over again & again) and the continually crashing makes ProjectColor not useful.

Could Use Modifications

I’m finding that it’s almost impossible for an app that will allow you to virtually paint a room. I want to paint an “attic” cape cod room a dark green but not sure if I want to paint the whole room or just some of the walls. I was hoping an app would somewhat let me visualize my options. ProjectColor isn’t great as in, it can’t identify the walls. It generates very blotchy and you would need to put the paint density all the way up to completely fill the walls. Which then over fills lots of areas you don’t want paint including the floor, annoying, but not a big deal. I figured I’d just use the eraser to clean it up and get the general idea of what I was going for. This is where I just gave up..... the eraser is in the shape of a circle and doesn’t operate like most erasers in programs. While held down to erase it creates “circle stamps” instead of a straight line. You won’t be able to erase a straight edge....it’ll look scalloped.

Colors Outdated

ProjectColor is easy to use, fun, color matching seems to be spot on so after spending a few days to narrow down THE perfect color it’s finally time to pick up some chips and look at them in your room before putting some real paint on the walls.....only to find that nothing you’ve picked is on any of the color chips. Computer to help locate chips is not set up to help you find the closest or at least a color within the family you’ve decided on. The guy at the counter is nice and he’ll make you up a sample of the old color, but seriously, he said the color I’d picked out hasn’t been on the chip board for at least five years. UPDATE your app Home Depot!!! If you want your tools to be useful that’s a no brainer. And also ProjectColor often freezes up when it’s time to try “Painting” your wall. Have to shut it down and start it again. Painful.

See it in your space feature is a joke

I downloaded ProjectColor because I recently bought a home and we are painting the whole house. I really like accent walls and different colors so I thought ProjectColor would help me visualize the colors we want to use. Well this feature doesn’t work at all. The colors look horrible on the walls, like someone took Microsoft Paint and painted color on a photo. Also there’s no way to just choose one wall. You pick an area with your finger and then use the slider for the coverage amount… it’s just so clunky and not intuitive at all.

I would think that Home Depot would have the resources to make a better app. Hopefully they fix it soon because it would be really cool idea to be able to visualize your paint before committing to it.

Very good!

Was told by a Home Depot employee that I shouldn’t use ProjectColor, after I already used ProjectColor .

I was trying to decide on any color for my master bedroom. After looking at a lot of swatches at the store, and using ProjectColor to visualize it in my space, I chose “Thermal.” I am so amazed, after painting, how much it looks like the image ProjectColor showed me. And I left everything in my photo, but the wall was mostly bare.

I will say I’m disappointed I can’t figure out how to ‘paint’ adjacent walls with different colors. So I’ve painted one, taken a screen capture, then used that image to ‘see it in my space’ changing the color of the adjacent wall. So that’s why I’ve removed 1 star.

Pretty good app, but could use improvements

ProjectColor is great if you want to match a color to a picture that you have pinned on Pinterest, or that you have saved on your camera roll. However, for the project that I had planned, ProjectColor fell short. We were remodeling the kitchen and wanted to see what color cabinets we should go with to match the pre-existing paint we had on the walls in the kitchen. But ProjectColor only lets you see one color at a time, not to mention, only the wall color can be changed, not the cabinet color. Besides these shortcomings, ProjectColor is great but being able to see more than one color side by side and change the cabinet colors would be a major improvement to ProjectColor .

Thanks for listening

This weekend I decided to finish painting our basement downstairs and wanted to blend the color with another color from Behr I purchased two years ago. I was very happy to find the colors quickly but even more happy that the feature to see the color in my room was returned. This is for now a competitive advantage and definitely a value add. The ability to see what I want in my space and go to store to get exactly that is the primary reason I purchased paint at Home Depot versus another store.

Great app for browsing colors and matching them, but...

ProjectColor works remarkably when using the color matcher, and if you just need to find something that will work with whatever project you are doing. My only problem is the beta “see it in your space”. There can’t be any thing else in the picture but the wall, otherwise that’s colored in too, and the wall can’t be textured, otherwise there will be white specks around the place. This was the main reason I got ProjectColor , so I hope that the company is working on bringing it to a useable state. If that feature isn’t what you’re looking for, then it’s a five star app.

Don’t take a pic with your phone for color match

I like ProjectColor if you’re using it with the colors already loaded in ProjectColor . I tried taking pictures of color swatches with two different iPhones, one being the newest best camera the 11Pro, and the pictures did not even come close to being a match. Green turned into aqua, etc. There are too many variables with lighting, shading, phone cameras, to make this a viable option. I would almost take this feature off until this is fixed, if ever. Customers will visit HD with a picture on their phone expecting it to be the color they want. It will not be.

Perfection

Wow! ProjectColor is extremely useful and helpful for choosing the right colors for your home. It’s amazing to be able to simply take a picture of the space or room your painting and like magic you’re able to try all the different colors currently available! It’s so simple to use too, if you can take a photo you can navigate ProjectColor!

Only able to use in portrait mode on iPadOS

I can’t remember the last time I used an iPad in portrait mode or the last time I saw someone else use an iPad in portrait mode. I’m guessing the vast majority of iPad users use their iPad in landscape at least 95% of the time. I’m not sure why Home Depot would then only make Project Color available to use in portrait mode on the iPad. On iPhone it makes sense. On iPad though, it makes zero sense that if you’re only going to allow portrait or landscape that you would go with portrait. Please add landscape mode to ProjectColor . Until then I guess I will use it only on my iPhone.

Update ruined a decent app

I liked the previous version better. It had its flaws but worked better than this one.
- Before I could drag my finger across the screen to paint where I wanted.
- Now I have to tap on a section to have it automatically fill in that area. This doesn’t work when you have an area that is multi-colored (such as a wooden deck). In that situation it fills in a very small section and I would have to tap all over the screen painting one tiny section after another. No thanks.
- Before I could search for colors while in “my space”
- Now I can only select between popular and my favorites. If I want to search I have to leave “my space”, search for a color and then go through the process of selecting a photo again.
- Before there were multiple brands and types of paint.
- Now there is only BEHR and Gidden and there is no selection for stains.

Home Depot is a longer drive for me than Lowe’s (30 min vs 5 min). I guess I’ll just have to go to Lowe’s and get samples so I can see what color works best. Too bad since I like HD better.

Removed option to view colors in My Rooms???

Why is this feature removed? That was the entire point of ProjectColor . The feature was a great help in selecting a kitchen color - I came here looking for options for family room and living room.
I can upload a picture of my room, but the option is only to match a color. I don’t want to match a color, I want a color that will compliment the room. I’m not one to buy multiple samples and see what works. I’d rather put that $12 a pint toward the actual gallons of paint I will need. For all ProjectColor does with color selection, I can just go to the store and pick out the color cards like I’ve done for the last 40 years. This is not progress. Very disappointed.

Colors doesn’t match 👎

I kinda loved ProjectColor. It was so easy to pick color and apply on various room setup. Loved the variety of rooms are used with well lit to dark. When I actually started the paint job in my house, I realized that ProjectColor (or any such app) is completely useless. The color what you see on your phone screen and the physical color is quite different. Phone screens can be warm or adaptive to light, which doesn’t reflect the true paint color. I ordered 3 different samples which completely differed from ProjectColor . I finally stopped using ProjectColor and ordered paint from the old color-fan. I won’t recommend to rely on ProjectColor for any dark color.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

When I downloaded ProjectColor a few years ago it was awesome!! I was making several changes to my house and it even helped me decide on what color of shutters would look best with my brick. It worked so well. I could zoom in and color a tiny strip for instance with the shutters on a picture that included the entire front of the house. For a while after that the “see it in your space” feature was gone. Now that it is back it is pitiful compared to the excellent product they had a couple years ago.

Good on iPhone, Terrrible on iPad

Although I love ProjectColor on my iPhone, it does not support iPad effectively. This color app does not rotate to support landscape orientation which is a huge disappointment on iPad because I generally have my iPad in landscape mode mounted in a holder or attached to the keyboard case and changing my entire usage pattern for just this one app is something I can do without.

I had also hoped to see the sample photo on one side, with the paint choices still visible on the other side, they could really take advantage of the extra real estate with ProjectColor but instead seem to have just kept the iPhone version unmodified for use on iPad.

Limited functionality for a company with so much $

Have only been playing with ProjectColor for a few minutes and am already disappointed. I’m using an iPhone.

1. Color-in function for using your own photo looks messy and silly. Could do better in Microsoft Paint.
2. Only able to select saved photos from Camera Roll. No option to choose from a different photo folder (like Favorites).
3. Only able to import photos from primary Pinterest Boards, not the sub-boards. I have a Home board in Pinterest, and within that board I have sub-boards for each room. I can’t access those with ProjectColor .
4. Very limited color selection. There are whole categories of color that aren’t represented in ProjectColor . I did better picking up swatches from my local hardware store.

ProjectColor doesn’t do anything I wanted it for. Trash.

False advertising

I was just on the Home Depot website where it was talking about the project color app. It showed a video on the website and talked about how you could use your iPhone to choose different colors and overlay them onto the room, experimenting with how different colors would look in the room.
This was the only reason I got ProjectColor and now I find out it does not even have this feature!!!! It is frustrating to be given a vision of something that sounds very useful and then not to be given that product at all but something inferior.
Please bring back that feature or change your website to not give false advertising.

Great Idea, Some Kinks

I selected a few photos from my photo album, applied colors matched from my Pinterest Board, and was delighted with the results. I then tried to add another few photos from my album but I found no way to add photos except to take new ones. I deleted and reinstalled just to fix this oversight. Also, there should be a re-do button in addition to the un-do. Additionally, it would be nice if I could match a color, then view similar colors in a color wheel or grid, so I can try a shade lighter, darker, warmer, cooler, etc. But overall, a good app for free

Removed the paint your own room feature.

Downloaded ProjectColor again to see what MY living room would like like with a certain color and discovered I can’t. Idk why they would take that feature off, but I feel like they’re gonna lose a lot of people because of it. Two stars bc it is still nice that you get to see the color in a fake bathroom, kitchen, outside, living room, and bedroom. But it’s better when you can view the paint with your own furniture and decor. Bring that feature back or at least say it doesn’t have that feature anymore on ProjectColor Store. 👍🏼

I had to edit the brightness of the picture using iphone8

For capturing a color of my siding I took a picture of a large area that was in the shade with bright sun light reflecting off adjacent surfaces. When I used the color capture feature, all paints came out too dark when held up to the vinyl siding. So, I increased the brightness of the photo using Photos until I could hold up my iPhone to the siding using color capture and the brightness was the same. I found 2 good matches. Now, I will get some samples and find out if the matches are real.
Note that I turned up the brightness on my IPhone to max before I started this exercise.

Problem with location

So I live in Alaska. We still carry all the paint products in the stores. However when I go to order a sample or buy a gallon (that I’ll pick up in store) it says it’s not available. When I go into the store they make the paint for me no problem. So why doesn’t ProjectColor recognize these stores. In the lower 48 states I didn’t encounter this problem.... I did see THD app says we can’t ship the product here but that doesn’t explain what is on the shelf and why I can’t place the order via ProjectColor and then pick it up.

Pretty good but needs some more tweaking.

I know it’s in Beta so just some feedback - I tried to upload a picture of the room from my camera role but it wouldn’t respond. I’m using my iPad Pro running version 12.4 if that helps the developers.

Not good

I downloaded ProjectColor to see what a white ceiling would look like in my cousins room and i was very disappointed with how the picture came out. First off, you can't even change the color panel when setting your space, it's stuck on popular colors which i don't want. Second of all the white that they had on the panel didn't turn out to actually be white once it was added to the picture it looked all pixilated and grey. Overall the colors on the panel don't show up in the picture how they're supposed to even in good lighting. I really want them to fix this because I know it used to be better than this.

App crashes

I’m giving it a 2 star at this time because ProjectColor Crashes when trying to simulate the color on a photograph of my house. This was on an iPad Pro 11” which I was hoping to use the pencil to fill in the color, but as soon as I tap the picture of my house ProjectColor crashes. The result is the same using my finger or the Apple Pencil, So ProjectColor isn’t much good. ProjectColor did not crash on iPhone XR but you have to use your finger on the small screen and the results are not all that great. I hope they can fix the issue.

Not all that useful

Accuracy is dependent upon the camera, and the type (temperature) and intensity of the light. Since ProjectColor does a poor job dealing with these variables, it’s as likely to be wrong as it is to get it right. Addendum: Three attempts to identify a color, using the same phone in the same light, same angle, moments apart yielded 2 very different colors and one slightly different shade. One attempt using around 6 color chips that I brought back from the store yielded far better accuracy. If you still want to use ProjectColor keep in mind that you can rarely return custom mixed paints if the stores app was at fault.

Update: Brought room painter back

Glad that Home Depot listens to customer feedback. They brought back the tool that lets you take a picture of a room and see what it might look like if you painted it a certain color. It's obviously not perfect, but it's useful for imagining what colors of paints you might like in a very real way.

All-around great app, and very glad Home Depot listens to customer feedback.
