Great app, but…

2022-04-29

by Garbonsai

Like the title says, great app, but…

Great because it does what it says on the tin, and does it well. The interface is quite good, more so when you compare it to other apps that do a similar thing. And I’ve never missed a notification or had the app up and die randomly in the middle of, say, taking a load of sourdough from start to finish.

So why “but…”? I’ve never had the watchOS and iOS apps stay in sync for more than an hour or two. And the watchOS complication often freezes up, or starts sending out duplicate notifications. So much so that I gave up and run MultiTimer on iOS only. Lots of devs says sync using iCloud is hard, so I have to assume that’s true. That said, I’d point each of them to a Drafts as a perfect example of how flawless sync can be. I should be able to start a task on my phone, switch to my watch or laptop and back again without having things go sideways. And I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops like unpairing my watch from my phone or turning iCloud syncing on and off to get it—both of those cost more of my time than a single app is worth, especially when there’s no assurance it’s going to fix the issue.

Almost!

I have been using this app for a while now, and I really like it. However, I often need to keep multiple repeating countdown timers in use simultaneously (like for medications), and it seems that after a few rounds the timers don’t chime properly. It seems like after I’m juggling alarms for a few hours, the sounds will just sort of disappear. I think i figured out why.

I identify my timers by sound. If I have three in play and two go off at the same time, only one will sound so I don’t realize two finished at the same time, and then I’ll never hear the quieted one again. I would prefer the first alarm to chime, and the next one immediately afterward, and keep all my alarm sounds.

Also, If I reset or pause one alarm and restart it, the restarted alarm will continue to trigger the audio at the old affixed time, instead of the new time. This means the visual countdown and audio become minutes apart from each other and totally throws me off. I hope this helps for the next update 😉

Love this (and have a request)

Request: give option to show what time (of day) I will finish if I move straight through my timers as planned (although am not sure how this would work with Pomodoro timer).
I used the 30/30 app for ages and it was my favorite productivity tool and I was so sad to see it leave the App Store. Looked for a replacement and tried several before finding the MultiTimer. Love this so much!
Only bit missing is my feature request above. If there was a way for me to be able to plan my day using the timer and having the app show what time it will end, I would have a better sense of what can actually get done. So for example, when I start my first timer of the day it shows that I will finish by 11:45 but as the morning moves along and I pause timers now I won’t finish this timer until 10:25 so there is no way I’ll finish everything before 13:45, etc.
I use my timers to plan my ideal day but often have to pause for interruptions. Something like this would be a great “upgrade” option!
