4.7 out of 5
Poor interface

Overall, I love the concept. But, if you previously played CryptoQuote, you will see some obvious shortfalls in Cryptogram. By way of comparison: 1 - the keyboard is too small, which contributes to error and slows down the game. 2- Cryptogram allows the player to assign a letter to itself - not good. 3 - Immediately after you assigned a letter in CryptoQuote and then realized you made an error, you just tapped the original letter on the keyboard and the substitute letter was unassigned. Not so in Cryptogram. 4 - The longer quotes do not fit on the screen, so you have to scroll. This could be solved either by using shorter quotes or reducing the font size for shorter quotes. 5 - the tools could be improved and supplemented with other tools. For example, adding an (optional) letter frequency tool would be great. Also, the ‘Reset’ function should reset the timer as well.

Nice app

I’ve played cryptoquotes for literally decades and have always enjoyed them. I was happy I found CryptogramCryptoquoteGame. I’m really disappointed on one thing though that kept my review at only three stars. Yours ads are WAY too long. I don’t want to watch a minute long ad after I complete every puzzle. Many of them are targeted for women, which I end up having to endure for the entire commercial. Please shorten them or give an opportunity to skip them after a short period of time. If this is changed, your review would go to five stars.

Revising and adding to this. Dropped to two stars now
It loses all my past games and statistics constantly. It bothers me when I look back to see how I’m doing and all the past game information is gone, clean slate. Alsready contacted support and they were looking into it, but nothings changed. Looking for a different app now. Disappointed because I like the game itself, but too frustrating.
Thank you

So close

This is a pretty good app. I really enjoy the simple interface and variety of quotes. I have had political quotes from a broad spectrum of sides, those that I’m strongly opposed to and those I agree with. I can handle solving a cryptograph with a quote that is against my political leanings. And most quotes I have had have not been political.

My biggest complaint is that CryptogramCryptoquoteGame takes over my audio at all times, even when the ads don’t have sound. I cannot play and listen to music or audiobooks at the same time. I don’t mind the ads and an occasional pause of my audiobook for the ad sound, but then it should start my audiobook again. Other apps have managed this, so I know it’s possible.

Need larger database, quicker ads and balanced quote viewpoints

I haven’t had CryptogramCryptoquoteGame that long and it appears I’ve already worked through all the cryptograms in the database. Seems like they would have more. A lot of the ads are loooong and annoying. The creator of CryptogramCryptoquoteGame appears to have atheistic leanings. At the very least the quotes could be balanced.

Update: they do add new quotes to the game, but once you work through the new ones, they just repeat until they eventually add newer ones. But it seems like they delete the old ones when they add the newer ones because they just repeat over and over. They just need a larger database so they could at least go back to some that haven’t been worked recently. Also, some of the quotes seem quite obscure and make no sense whatsoever. That said, I do still enjoy working the newest ones until they start repeating.

The solved quote screen kills the experience of solving. I legit love this app please read this?

Like above the game is great, and it took me a minute to understand how to play but I got it. (A simple how to play text window would be so helpful to new timers) but the real pain in the experience is solving a quote so suddenly and having the text appear without any animation or queue that the puzzle has been solved. Having the quote pop up in a different size, font and window just makes it look like I has nothing to do with the puzzle I solved and I have to re-read it like I didn’t just spend all that time solving it. I believe just adding a moment between inputting the final letter and the complete quote appearing in a new window would work wonders. Right now, it’s so irritating and breaks my focus so much I’m considering finding another app to keep playing but honestly I think this one is great except for that.

One tiny tiny tiny critique...

This is the silliest of critiques of this game but here we go. I LOVE this game. Some of them are really hard and take time and effort... and it’s in those moments when I FINALLY solve one that... I wish there was a small moment of... “fanfare”..or “celebration” when you finally solve it.. it just clicks over to the result.. even a second of a pause with a “boom! You did it!”...or even just a pause before the screen changes. It happens so suddenly! A bad example... but like, when you finish a level of Candy Crush.. the screen expose in celebration... haha..

Most the time I don’t even have time to read down the entire thing before it just clicks over to the next screen. And yes while it has the entire solve on the next screen, it’s not as exciting.. it just happens so fast and I rarely get a moment to appreciate the quote and who said it.

Other then that I love the game.

Would love to upgrade!

I would give CryptogramCryptoquoteGame 5 stars, because I love it and play it all the time, but it has no way to upgrade to an ad-free version. I would pay for this! Also, it would be cool if it could time you and compare you to others who have solved the same puzzle. Also maybe be able to choose level of difficulty and subject of quotes? And a way to share? All things I would pay for. It's a great app, looking forward to the improvements so I can give you 5 stars. Checking in later, still no upgrade available. Come on, guys!

...much later, I am still waiting for the opportunity to upgrade to a paid, ad-free version. Why don't you offer this?

Now months later, still want to upgrade to an ad free version

Great design!

I have played this for years, and I never get frustrated or bored. It has a wonderful mix of quotes and difficulty levels. I used the hint for the first time today, but have used the check feature a couple of times when my efforts seemed to be getting nowhere. Knowing which of my choices are correct and which are not is extremely helpful. It is the best tool for finding the right direction in the puzzle, and keeps me from having to clear the board and start over.

GREAT!

I am pretty new to cryptogram apps. I tried two others and later deleted them for various reasons, including too many ads (luckily yours do not interrupt a game…only plays them after completion). Or, one had no way to quit when I was totally stumped. Yours has an option to go to a new game. Great. Plus personal stats of progress. And hints. Plus other features. One feature I’d like to see is to be able to pause a game (for a phone call, a visitor, etc). A pause button would be wonderful, so that no seconds/minutes are lost.

Ads, but a normal amount

I wanted to add a cryptogram game to my “Waiting in Line” app folder. I read reviews, and every game has ad complaints. I tried a few, and they not only had ads between puzzles, but would also interrupt active gameplay with ads! This game has only run ads in between puzzles, which is a reasonable amount. (If you’re not a client, you’re a product.)

I also like the feature that highlights all instances of a letter and autofills, so you can get a better idea of how a choice will show in other words.

Cryptograms

Mind-bending, this game is both fun and challenging. The player decodes famous quotes about life, love, education, etc. More than that, though, of the several other cryptogram games I have downloaded and tried, this one is the most organized and useful: it has a menu that offers strategic help, allowing the player to select Undo, Reset, and Check answers along the way. The menu even offers Hints. However, the game acknowledges and rewards the player for not using any of those crutches. My thanks and appreciation to the designer & developer of this wonderful game!

Distressing ads

Bloodthirsty, screaming, paranoid pro-gun ads. I’m not sure how many more of them I can take. (The offensive ads are gone now. My only complaint now is that from time to time CryptogramCryptoquoteGame serves up a blank page and I’m forced to uninstall it and install it again to get it working. Otherwise a five star game.) UPDATE!! I have no more complaints. The ads are acceptable now, the page no longer goes blank from time to time, and the quotes are terrific. Update!!! Now ads come up that can’t be removed. There’s no “x” or other sign upon which to click to get rid of them. Sometimes closing the game down works. Overall, still five star.

Great game!!

I have been playing this game for years now and still love it! I find that there's a good mix of easy and difficult puzzles as well as a good mix of modern and historical quotes! The new stats dialog is really fun to track my games. It's nice that I can see my times over time. Very happy to see too that they added an auto advance setting to move to the next open letter! Also pleased to see that we can see the letters that have already been used. I'll be playing Cryptograms for a long time coming. Keep up the good work!

Update: It’s great to see the addition of the “More” menu! I like that I can click on another game and it goes right into it.

Update 2: It seems like there are a bunch of new quotes in the latest update. Really enjoying some of them and finding a few thought provoking. Some of the longer quotes are easier to solve than the short ones since there are more clues but I think that’s OK. It makes the next game a surprise difficulty! It would be nice to be able to reset your stats. Hopefully an easy change! Thanks again for this great game.

Excellent word game

I have been downloading various word apps only to delete them in 5 minutes because I either didn’t understand how to play, they were too complicated, had too many ads, or required constant purchases. Finally, an uncomplicated game I was good at. If you have good word composition skills and good word recognition, you will love this game. At first I thought it was going to be too hard, but having some experience with this type of puzzle I realized certain letter (such as “e”) and certain words like “the” “it” and “is” are used often. Couple that with a hint or two, if needed, and you’ll have no trouble solving.

Classic Crytograms

These crypto quotes are about as classic as they get. You don’t know if you have the letters correct until you solve the whole puzzle, there are no locked clues, and there’s no penalty for guessing. The game features hints and checks if you want to use them, or you can go classic like me and try to solve it without any help. Very satisfying, especially once you solve a few words. That’s when you start to snowball to victory. Great vocabulary trainer!

Other cryptogram games are ad factories with penalties and ad breaks during the puzzle. Eww.
Not this one. Just good long fun quotes to solve with ads between puzzles.

Lot and lots of quotes

The ads can be annoying, but that’s true of most games that don’t cost you money. It’s a nice, simple program design and a good way to kill down time on planes and in waiting rooms.

The only issue can be with the quotes. I’ve never been so jaded with the “wisdom” of the world than since I started playing this game. I never realized how much empty bull the human race could produce just because they think someone is listening. And I swear half of the quotes come from some random guy named Roy T. Bennett who very much thinks he has all the answers you’ll ever need. It’s like he only speaks in crossstitch samplers.

I’ve become adept at identifying my starting words by looking for something that looks like “success,” “happiness,” or arrangements like “we cannot” or “in this world” or “we were born to” etc. Any one of a number of cliches. So be warned about that. There’s a vast amount of Facebook meme wisdom packed into this game.

Challenging & enlightening

This is a very fun game, with a great mix of hard and easy puzzles. I love the fact that these are real quotes from real people and not silly, cartoonish quips.

But I don’t always know who the authors are or, even if I do, when or where the quote came from. I would love to have a very brief description of the author, a date (either when the quote was made or the author’s DOB-DOD). It would also be great to have a reference to where or why they said it or if it was from a publication of theirs.

I realize that this would be a lot of work to add, but it would make the experience so much more enriching, interesting and informative.

Great simple game

I’m very pleased with this game. It delivers exactly what it advertises in a straightforward way and doesn’t have any of the annoying aspects found in so many other games these days (excessive ads, fake “intelligence scores”, unnecessary “power ups”, competitions, etc.) You get an ad after completing a puzzle and then you move on to the next puzzle - simple.

Interestingly my biggest “complaint” with this game is probably that it doesn’t have an option to purchase an ad-free experience. Considering the gameplay is solid and the ad-supported experience is considerate to users, it’s exactly the kind of app I would be more likely to pay for. I know you can play offline, but it would be nice if I could stream music while playing this game without ads interrupting.

Great game! (only petty complaints)

I enjoy the challenge of this game & appreciate the broad spectrum of quotes. Even quotes that may be disagreeable are thought provoking. I don’t agree with living by concepts like; living in an echo chamber, sweeping things under the rug, censoring, trigger warnings, or any milk-mush teeth concepts. I appreciate the simple interface without any showy/flashy graphics. I like the transition to the completed quote even though others have mentioned it. I know I’m completing it so why wait any longer for the anticipated results!? I am interested in how the stats are measured even though I’m only competing with myself. It seems that when I make a ‘fat thumb’ mistake it sets me back more than it takes to make it up with perfect solutions. The ads aren’t terrible thankfully but occasionally it’s a struggle to close them. Not unlike any other apps though.

MY MORNING BRAIN NUDGE

This is my coffee for my brain. I must do Cryptograms every morning. I started doing Cryptoquotes since I was a kid in Long Island NY. The Newsday paper had one daily cryptoquote by the comic section. I have a brain wake up every morning in bed on my iphone. I do four word games every time I wake up and I can see that I improve each time. In the beginning you get frustrated but keep on going because eventually you get it and you feel good about yourself. Always start with the simplest level and as you succeed try the next one. Try to avoid clicking on hint. YOU CAN DO IT! I am not much of a physical exerciser but I LOVE exercising my brain.
