The new interface is trash
2022-05-25
by JCH2629
There was absolutely no need to change the previous layout. I now have less of an understanding of my daily energy usage because the 24 wheel display data completely differently. This also used to update at noon for the previous day very reliably but I’m currently 2 days behind.
UI update trashed this good app
2022-06-26
by TADexter
Hidden in the v3.6 update (“minor bug fixes”) is a major change to the look and layout. Information that used to be provided is gone or moved off to an awkward location, usage data is displayed three times on the same page, text has shrunk and is nearly unreadable now, budget numbers were scrambled and can’t be changed back. Please, don’t fall for that “gotta release an update” nonsense. It was fine. It worked. It was clean. This is an aggravating mess now. The likelihood that I’ll use DTEInsight going forward just collapsed. Please roll back this sneaky trashing of the interface. It was a very very bad idea.
3.7 is a downgrade
2022-07-27
by NickTech.com
I was forced to update to 3.7. DTEInsight is now slower, less accurate, less stable, and missing information.
Always on values are innacurate. At no point in a selected day does mine show less than 80w. But use the always on button, then scroll, and it will claim 67w was my lowest. It always used to show the actual lowest value for each day.
Crashes back to Home Screen periodically.
Doesn’t cache days properly (may have to load more than once per session.) Loads much more slowly than previous version.
Shows “Missing total” for yesterday and today despite having all minute by minute data. DTEInsight can’t even add anymore.
adequate, but iPad app is just a zoomed-in iPhone app

by Jkp1187
This would get 4 stars from me, but for the fact that the developers didn't bother making a true iPad application. C'mon guys, all we need is freakin' landscape view. This isn't that hard.
Otherwise, it's fairly straightforward and generally works as expected. I'm not sure why anyone would want to use a DTE app as their smart home hub, but if you do, DTEInsight has that, too.
Go back to the previous version! DTEInsight is so slow now and much less useful since the last update. It just take to long to get to any of the information you’re looking for and all the important metrics are now really small in the corner. How did these changes get approved?
Keeps changing functionality

Every other update DTEInsight stops being useful. I currently cannot see my past energy usage. It tells me I need to buy the energy bridge. I don’t care about current use. I only want to see past use. I’m sure the next update I’ll be able to see past usage only to have it taken away again in the future. Very frustrating
Lots of potential but poorly executed
2022-12-01
by Zfxr
DTEInsight has lots of potential an some great features, like budget setting, scanning of device usage, etc
That being said, a typical DTE production - good ideas poorly executed. I’ve been using DTEInsight since 2015 and it continues to crash, not update consumption consistently. Furthermore, its incessant updates for branding, look, etc are nice - but how about better consistency of meter consumption, not crashing randomly for no reason, opening and crashing immediately (newest issue that regularly occurs). I understand it all interfaces with infrastructure behind the scenes, so figure out what’s the issue and fix it. I’m sure typical of DTE, internal management and “leadership” is running around blaming everyone / technology and developers are trying to fix with little to no time or budget...
Update as of 8/2/21 - Support has reached out before to try to fix it, but I get multiple days of no data, takes way longer than 36 hours to load. I’ve done the usual logout, login, delete/reinstall app. Not sure why this is so difficult. I have friends in other cities who use other utils apps that do the same thing, no issues. I also have a newer meter on the outside of the house (2019ish) and a fresh power run from the pole... so who knows. Oh wait yeah it’s DTE
Some things are good. Some not so good

Overall DTEInsight does what it says when connected to the energy bridge. I’m trying to add other smart home devices and it can’t seem to detect them. Also. I tried to add the Alexa skill and it says to enable 2 skills that cannot be found at all in the skills section in the Alexa app. So I can’t add my Alexa device.
Curious

My updated equal monthly payment has doubled, even though I have a negative balance. I called and ask why and he said my usage last winter was more. I tried to check last years bills to check my usage and can’t see last 12 months to check. We need to be able to look back if we have chosen to save paper and not get a paper bill.
Is it just me? But I recognize after each update the login takes longer. Even after iPhone reset and new installation of DTE insight no change

Informative but could use a widget

While I like having access to my daily usage, it would be tremendously useful to have an iOS widget so this info could be gleaned at a glance.
Rates and Usage is Different between yrs and months

by KareBear444
It will show lower usage this month than a year ago but then the bill for the current month is way higher there should be an explanation of the percentage the rate went up from last year
Energy Bill Manager

by Nicole Bonneville
I have the Energy Bridge hub and am able to see when I have certain appliances on that they’re causing my energy and bill to spike. I was able to figure out that it was more cost effective to turn on my heat than run my space heater. Now, I’m more conscious of when things are on and off and how it’s affecting my bill.
Ok not literally a life saver but a time and money saver for sure. I didn’t think I’d ever actually change my habits but seeing my energy use has made me do things differently and I see the savings in my bill. I also love being able to control my lights and thermostat with it. I kept it for two bucks a month after the trial was up.
No more surprises

DTEInsight is great for managing my energy bill. It shows you how much power your home is using in real time, so you can use it to find big spikes in your usage. I found out that the electric clothes drier was using waaaay more than I thought (most of the time I use $0.10 an hour but with the drier on its $0.50!). I rent, so I can’t replace the drier, so instead I try to air dry my clothes when it makes sense to cut costs!
Support never gave up.

It’s been 6 months or better without DTEInsight working. I had a unusual situation with a few meter changes it’s up and running Thanks Robert in support.

DTEInsight is amazing! Being able to see where I can cut down on the amount of energy I’m using is really cool - and it helps me save money!
Informative

I like being able to see what uses the most energy in my house. it has definitely changed the way i do things, like not running laundry and the dishwasher at the same time or changing the set point on the thermostat to not run the hvac as long. I also love being able to connect smart devices. We set up a door sensor to a smart plug so that when we open the garage door it automatically turns on a light after a certain time of day. Super cool technology and worth the price in my opinion.
Nice to have my energy usage broken down by different lengths of time. Good tool for energy use awareness and sustainability goals.
DTE Dreaming The Expense is worth it?

Our family has been a loyal participant in DTE's energy conservation programs going back to the Department of Energy (DOE) "SmartCurrents" smart monitoring pilot with DTE & GE back in 2013.
It hasn't always been pain-free. (That disaster GE "smart" thermostat, for example.)
We thought DTE's goal was to provide the tools to its customers to conserve energy, thereby assisting DTE managing demand and eliminating the need to build additional power plants... and make grid alternative energy more possible.
Unfortunately the first gen smart meter energy bridge was horribly unreliable and now the second gen also appears to be less than reliable.
And DTE expects its customers to *pay DTE* (the monthly charge) for helping it manage power demand?!? And to pay for unreliable technology?!? DTE tries the patience of its loyal partner-customers.
Way to treat your testers poorly

The original energy bridge users can no longer use their old bridge to see real time data. Now they want 99¢ per month for a bridge worth $25(based on the lost equipment fee). The report by Navigant showed an average savings of 3% for those using the bridge. No really worth the money or hassle of setting it up and being responsible for the equipment. Overall, DTEInsight is useless without real time data.
Charging more delivering much less

This should tell you everything you need to know. Feedback from an energy app needs to be real time or we can always guess what happened. DTEInsight use to provide real time energy use an when they downgraded (they call it an upgrade) that critical feature disappeared. Other features have very limited value compared to real time feedback.
Greed

What use to be useful and FREE, is no longer. If you want to see your energy usage for the day prior, it use to display it by noon the next day. Now if you want to see it the next day, it’ll cost you $1.99 a month. They now give some lame reason on why it will take 36hrs to display the chart for the day prior on the free version. But what it comes down it, is greed. I pay you enough DTE!
Update, now DTEInsight is laughable. It’s Sunday and the last day it shows electrical usage data for is Thursday. As for gas, the last update of usage data shown is LAST Sunday. 7 days with no reading. So much for the smart meter upgrades. DTE might as well left the old ones in place.
I really like viewing my current energy use but my account keeps dropping back to basic service. DTE sent out a technician with a new bridge when I lost my connection with a previous bridge. This time it worked 5 days and then again my account went back from premium to basic and I lost connection to the bridge. I tried to reconnect and it said the bridge was assigned to another account.
Missing Features
2024-11-16
by JR Young PA
I have been using the Insight App since almost the inception. One feature that disappeared with the upgraded platform is the ability to zoom in and view power consumption on the wheel. Without the ability to zoom in it is nearly impossible to see how long appliances are operating (mostly furnace) and to help diagnose problems. My furnace is almost 20 years old and I know the power consumption pattern and when it changes I know to investigate. Please bring back the zoom function!!!
Showing Improvement...

I’m raising my original review from one star to three now.
But it would have been nice if the new app had more features to begin with especially since you would begin to charge $.99 a month for the bridge after six months. When it is advertised that a new app is an improvement it would be nice to show the improvements to begin with and not in stages. I would hold my final judgement until after I have had the bridge for 6 months.
Ok,

DTEInsight would be better if it would tell you what an estimate of your current upcoming energy usage is and an estimate of your bill would be. It does let you know the previous month energy usage is but not the future (current upcoming month) .
Thank you for your response. I have found it.
Getting better

by Krmillie
I enjoyed the old app and recommended it to friends. I cannot do that any longer. It doesn’t give me the information I got before. I was able to compare year to year, month to month and can no longer do that. Unless they can change it back or make this new platform better, I will be canceling after the six-month trial.
Update on July 27,2018 - Developers have made changes and the month over month feature now is back. They did say the historical comparison data will be reinstated with new features to come. They listened to everyone that had concerns and I do think they are trying to make things better. Good job DTE and thank you for listening.
The minor release seems to have fixed the crashing issue. Thank you!
I enjoy being able to monitor usage in real time and get detailed information on when we’re using energy.

Worked nicely till today...it just keeps crashing. Not sure if it’s an update bug. DTEInsight was really helpful but now I can’t even open it. Hope they fix the issue soon
Edit: The update fixed the issue and now it's working fine.

It’s cool that DTE offers an app that helps lower my bill! The fact that it actually has good ux/ui is even better. Now I know what to expect on my bill since I can track how much my energy usage is costing me-it’s super helpful to turn appliances on and off and immediately see my usage go up and down.
I wish they would bring bill pay back though. I used to use that all the time.

Just updated and app crashes instantly. IOS 12.3.1.
**Updated 8/7/19**. App is fixed and I received an email from the developer telling me so. App usually works great.
