What’s with the new full-screen ads?

I’ve been using this app for 3+ years as my main Reddit app. I use BaconReader more than just about any other app on my phone. As long as I’ve been using BaconReader , there've been ad banners at the bottom of the screen. The only ads have been these banner ads. I can ignore those ads, so I’m fine with them.

However, in the past day — that is, since the most recent update — I’ve had 4 or 5 full-screen pop-up ads appear out of nowhere, and I’ve had to wait several seconds to close them. This completely takes me out of my Reddit browsing experience. Don’t get me wrong, I love BaconReader, but I’d give it 5 stars if the developers removed the full-screen ads.

Was my favorite reddit app, until it started to significantly drain my battery

I noticed a few days ago that my phone battery would go from 100 to 20% by noon with minimal use. I checked my battery usage in the settings and noticed that for BaconReader, with 5 min on screen, there was 12 HOURS of background activity. What is it doing? Mining bitcoin or something? Yes my background app refresh is off, but I usually leave BaconReader open and just switch apps, which has worked for me for the most part and no other apps have such significant background activity usage. I don’t want to explicitly close all my apps after I’m done using them just because of this issue. But if you are already used to doing that, BaconReader will probably work fine for you. So I’ve deleted BaconReader and have decided I will look for another app to browse Reddit with. Now my battery is at 80% at noon.

Five star Reddit client with one caveat.

As of the time of me writing this review, BaconReader doesn't allow me to post comments, stating only that an error has occurred and nothing much beyond that. This is, in my opinion, the best Reddit client available right now and has so much amazing functionality. However, not being able to post comments (as I've been able to do before recent updates) has been killing me. I've tried across multiple subreddits in case some subs prohibit comments based on user frequency or karma etc and it just doesn't work.

It's still not enough for me to rate below five stars, despite this glaring issue. It could also be due to NAT issues which don't fault BaconReader at all. Have not tested that yet.

Tldr; freaking fantastic Reddit client. Hoping my comment issue is an isolated one.

Excellent!

Seriously by far my most over the used app over the last 6 years and I have zero complaints. I paid for the premium version so no ads and it makes the experience a ton better. Also this has a one time payment unlike the Reddit official app which is a recurring monthly payment. BaconReader is also much better looking and functions better than the official app. Use Google to search specific Reddit posts because the only function that doesn’t work well on BaconReader is the search bar but that’s what Google is for anyway. Overall just an excellently simple and enjoyable way to browse Reddit.

Still my favorite iOS Reddit app

Recent update was much appreciated! It's not as pretty as a lot of the other Reddit apps are, but I think it's super high on usability and user interface functionality.

The one thing I'd ask for is to letting an image of videos width determine the height. There are so many skinny pictures I have to click on the post and then click on the picture just to see it whereas if it displayed it wider (thus pushing comments down a little) it would improve it visually.

Go to for a long time, but a new complaint

I don’t know what’s changed with BaconReader . It’s for years been my Reddit portal and I would still love to use it for years more.

However, in the past month, I’ve run into a pretty significant problem. I am sometimes maybe too verbose, but that’s my prerogative... when I go to proofread my comments or posts I’d like to make, BaconReader does a weird somersault and ENTIRELY deletes the essay I had been trying to write.

Just like a casual flick in a direction I cannot explain, and the last 20-25 minutes of me curating my post or comment gets completely erased. Whatever point I had hoped to make is lost entirely. There’s no redo, there’s no drafts. Just GONE. I’ve wasted at least 3 hours over the last couple weeks trying to comment or post and lost everything I had been writing.

It’s annoying and disheartening. I wasn’t going to get that much feedback anyway. It was like a therapeutic journaling session, and all the energy and effort I put in was wasted and can’t be revisited.

Please reinstate a verification of deleting drafts. Why am I even trying to say anything if BaconReader will just disrespect me like this?

Completely broken on iPad

I’ve been using BaconReader for years on my galaxy phone with no issues. I’ve been using it for maybe a year on iPad and it’s been a reasonable app with a few shortcomings. There have alway been problems dealing with comment permalinks. Specifically, BaconReader has no way to let you copy them. This can very annoying but not the end of the world.

But the permalink problem is now much worse. Clicking a comment reply in the inbox should take you to the post and parent comment so you can read it in context. Instead I get taken to the post but just get a “no comments” message and have to “display full post” to try to hunt down the comment.

I’m not sure if this is just me or not but this is driving me to consider alternatives on iPad.

almost perfect but one flaw makes it awful

I've been using BaconReader forever - but I'm about to give up on it for something that ruins the experience numerous times . if you swipe left or right the screen changes to somewhere else and you lose wherever you were and whatever you were writing if you were writing.

being left handed and trying to scroll ask reddit. this becomes a frustrating nightmare.

all I want is the option to completely disable this swipe action, I don't want it at all anyway. after years of this I'm about ready to switch apps even though literally everything else about BaconReader is as simple as I could ever hope for.

The BEST reddit App

I don’t usually write reviews unless BaconReader is god awful - in which case I warn people, but BaconReader is absolutely incredible. Not only is it free, the UI and buttons are laid out incredibly well, you can have multiple accounts to switch between, messages and comments are easy to respond to, and best of all the developer is very responsive. I submitted a bug about some issues I had and they replied back with a temporary work around as well fixing the EXACT bug in the next update. If you want a free reddit app, this is the one.

Used to be my go app for reddit but things are changing.

I used to love BaconReader over the official reddit app in a lot of ways I prefer it but idk maybe the last few updates certainly the last two months or so I've been finding myself running into issues with BaconReader that I didn't before.
Main issue is when I click on the audi button for a .reddit video and go into the subreddit the audio keeps playing and it Continues to play audio even if I play a new video. It takes me leaving the orignal audio post and turning it off leaving the post then go back into It without clicking the audio button.

Another annoying issue is when I go to my subreddits list a custom list never survives so I can't do that and when I do hit sort alphabetically it'll do half the list correct then for whatever reason it'll start over from A again so weird.

I still love BaconReader the ads for me aren't annoying, it still works for the most part and the layout is just cleaner.

Laggy and locks up/restarts often these days.

Unfortunately BaconReader seems to no longer be stable. Constant freezing and maybe it’ll catch the errors and allow you to continue but most times it stops working completely. It seemed to be related to the ads that get loaded in the story list when they change. The frequency seems to be often or maybe some timing issues are occurring. Regardless, BaconReader has largely become unusable. Really hoping this gets fixed as I’ve really enjoyed BaconReader for years. Will stick around a little longer, but without any improvements, I’ll have to remove BaconReader....

New Ads Ruin the App (Fixed!)

I’ve used this app for many years, and the recent addition of the full screen ads is ridiculous enough to make me convert to an app with worse features. I didn’t mind the banner ads at the bottom, at least they were out of the way. But to read reddit, it’s too inconvenient. If this changes I’d love to start using BaconReader again.

edit: these issues seem to have been fixed, I’ve not noticed any of these issues regarding the advertisements. Thanks!

Wasted time writing a comment

UPDATE: Thanks for fixing this issue :)

I was writing a comment and accidentally pulled down on the screen slightly causing the writing window to disappear and the written comment to be lost. This has happened to me multiple times.

Please turn off the swipe down gesture when composing or writing a comment. Apple clearly knows and doesn’t have this “feature” when writing a review of BaconReader.

Worth the money!

This is by far the best reddit app in BaconReader Store, it is well worth the money to remove the ads. I've used all the others and this is by far the best way to browse reddit. Only thing I’d say I would like to see, is a system default theme option. I don’t like having to manually change the theme based on time of day, its the only app that I use regularly that hasn’t integrated this feature yet.

Ads are a huge issue now

The free version was great with passive banner ads that I didn't mind having and actually clicked on once in a while. They've now switched to full screen video ads with the volume automatically on even when my phone is on silent mode. And the audio has been getting messed up to the point where three or more ad audio tracks are playing with no ads on the screen and no way to stop it without force quitting BaconReader . Really not happy with it and looking for an alternative app to use.

App has improved a lot over time a little more user experience stuff could help though

The first thing that bothers me is that I cannot scroll across other things I’m viewing like I can the front page or subreddits

For instance if I’m in r/news I can swipe away to see the next post

But for profiles, saved posts, upvoted posts, etc. you have to back in and out of each post to view it

Obnoxious pop-up ads

I’ve been using this app as long as I can remember (around 6-7 years). It has been my favorite app for browsing during that time. Recently however, the sensitivity of the ads has gone way up. I can’t touch that part of the screen while scrolling without BaconReader opening up the ad in my browser and then glitching and opening up in a second browser. This is extremely disruptive to my experience. I am setting a calendar reminder for the first day of March. If the issue isn’t fixed by then I’m permanently deleting this app and finding another app.

New “terms of service “ agreement

I used BaconReader every day. But when I opened it this morning, this very long, highly legalese, document opened which required me to either “agree” or “disagree “ with what’s in the document. I clicked on “disagree”. No way would I agree to all that garbage. I was perfectly willing to never use BaconReader again.

Humorously, though, clicking on “disagree” did nothing but cause a message to pop up that said I must “agree” in order continue to use BaconReader . This happened repeatedly. Well then, why have the “disagree” button? Duh!

So I deleted your app. Too much legal mumbo-jumbo.

This used to be my favorite reddit app

Now that they’ve added the crossoosting feature with the latest update it is almost unusable. I can no longer open a picture in it’s own, I now have to navigate to the post page, then open the picture. And after I’m done I have to go back twice to go back to scrolling. That’s 4 taps for one post that used to take 2. And now it doesn’t even mark the post as read, so I’m reopening things I’ve already seen because anything that was cross posted never registers as read.

Idgaf about cross posting. Please just give me the option to turn it off, or make it less intrusive.

Used to be a great app

I used bacon reader for a long while, this was my favorite app for reddit until now. In order to access BaconReader , you have to accept the new terms of use. This is the statement that’s most alarming of the new terms of use: The agreement contains a mandatory arbitration provision that disallows class actions, a class action waiver provision and a jury waiver provision.
This is not only alarming, it’s plain wrong. If the makers of Bacon Reader have a security breach on all of our personal info, we cannot take action against them. Not worth it at all. I’m not deleting BaconReader, I’m just not agreeing to the new terms of use. If there is a breach of security, I will take legal action.

Great app, just one request

I love BaconReader; it’s the primary one that I use for Reddit. I just have one request: it would be great if paragraph breaks showed up when writing a post or commenting. They paragraph breaks do not show up if I comment from BaconReader but will if I use another app or the web version. That’s the only negative I have, otherwise it’s awesome!

Why

Why do you have to change things when BaconReader is working perfectly? Gfycat, v.reddit, Imgur gifs... Any video format suddenly has a 50% chance of refusing to play within the native application window (not the built-in browser). This has only begun to happen with the most recent update for me. I am not pleased and did away with the Bacon Reader for the foreseeable future, which is a disappointing measure to have to take after five years of being a loyal user. Please fix this, as half of Reddit being unviewable is unacceptable

Battery Issues

I’ve used Bacon Reader for a few years now, and it is my favorite reddit app, but over the last few months it has become nearly unusable. After just a few minutes of being open my phone starts to overheat and the battery drops almost 5% a minute. For context over the last 2 months, Bacon Reader has been responsible for 80% of my total battery power consumption. Judging by a lot of the other comments here it doesn’t seem to be isolated to me either.

App is great, desperately needs an update

This is the best app for cruising reddit on your phone, but one issue is a little maddening.

When typing a comment longer than the iPhone window screen, your cursor disappears off the screen and you can no longer scroll and read what you’re typing. It still types but you have no way of knowing what it says. This has been a consistent issue since I first started using BaconReader , and it would be amazing if they’d finally fix this bug!

No better iOS Reddit app

The best reddit app on iPhone, iPad, etc. The dark theme is great, well organized, easy to traverse. I wish the website was as nice as this version. BaconReader is free with ads, however, the ads are very non- intrusive. The way all ads should be. I have tried every other reddit app on the apple store and if this one was a 10/10 the next closest one 6/10.

Crashes, overheats phone, slows all other apps

For the last week now I've been having terrible luck with your app. My phone will slow to a crawl with this app resting peacefully in the background, and only resume when I quit BaconReader .

BaconReader also crashes randomly 24/7 now. Any time you click on a picture it seems to crash.

Clearly this new release is horribly energy efficient. I can only speculate what resources your devs are using in the background that cause the phone to behave this way - but I'm not using your app until the next update.
